How Much Salt Do You Lose In Your Sweat?

Ben Greenfield runs on a treadmill in a 95-degree chamber for an hour while researchers measure how much sodium he loses through sweat. They track his food, urine, and sweat samples at a lab to find out exactly how much salt his body sheds during exercise.

Really? Hey, it's Ben Greenfield. I'm here at the Timex Performance center holding my pee. And the reason I've got a jug full of my urine is I am doing a sweat sodium analysis. That means that we're going to find out exactly how much sodium my body loses while I'm exercising. So step one was for me to record everything that I've eaten in the past day, as well as to every time I go to the bathroom, number one, at least to go in this. And that's going to allow the researchers to determine exactly how much sodium I'm actually losing. And they'll see how much I'm getting from my food. They'll be able to see how much I'm losing in my urine. And then what I'm about to do is go into a room that's 95 degrees, and I'm going to exercise for like, an hour really hard, and then they're going to rinse all the sweat off my body. Hopefully we get some video of that for you, so stay tuned.
I swallowed a thermometer, an internal thermometer, last night. Check this out. This guy can hold this up to my body, and it shows what my internal temperature is right now. Celsius 36.83. 36.8. How cool is that? Next thing I'm going to do is go put on my clothes that have been totally washed by the lab last night so that they make sure there's no extra salty stuff on them.
Hey, it's Ben Greenfield. I'm resting on the ground right now because we have to get an accurate heart rate reading. So I just lie here waiting.
It's nice and cool out here. I'm about to walk into the death chamber.
Here we go.
Hey, this is hot. I didn't know somehow. I need you to call Johnson again.
Hey, it's Ben. Six and a half miles on the treadmill. I collected all my sweat on this. I gotta go urinate yet again. And then I'm gonna go get everything rinsed off me in a little bathtub with deionized water.
Very sciency stuff.
My women at that. What's that by women? Yes, Every man's fantasy Run six and a half miles, then get hosed down by women. There you go.
Okay. Hey, it's Ben Greenfield. This is Julie, my lovely assistant, and she just got done rinsing me down, getting all the sweat off my body, and I did the whole bath thing, and now I'm ready to go away again. Yep. Cool. Having fun.
