How "Pooled Testing" Could Drastically Improve Virus Testing Capabilities

Matt Dawson and Mike Mallon explain pooled testing, where multiple swabs are combined for one RT-PCR test, cutting costs and time dramatically. A pool of 32 people costs roughly the same as 32 individual tests but uses one lab run. The method works best when infection rates are low, and they share the math: optimal pool size equals the square root of total people divided by expected infections.

Questions this video answers

Initial 100 pooled tests (100 pools of 10); 10 positive pools → retest 100 individuals → total ~200 tests to screen 1,000 people.

They reported running 1,147 tests to rule out 9,000 individuals in the 1% prevalence example (multi-round pooling strategy).

Optimal pool size ≈ square root of (total to test ÷ number infected).

LOD cited about 15 particles; literature sensitivity near 99% but some real-world estimates around 80%.
