How To Do A Kitchen Workout With A Perfirmer

Ben Greenfield demonstrates the Perfirmer, a wheeled device with reversible surfaces for unstable-surface training. He shows knee flys, corkscrew push-ups, and deadlift-to-press moves that target chest, triceps, and shoulders. Each weighs about 4 to 5 pounds.

Hey, it's Ben Greenfield. And if you know anything about me or you've seen any of my videos, you know I'm a total geek for home exercise equipment. What I'm holding here in my kitchen are not a couple of saucepans or irons. They're actually this exercise device called the performer, which I've been using for home workouts. Specifically, literally on the kitchen floor, because that's a great place to do this kind of workout. You can do it in the gym or the bedroom too. But here is how these things work. Basically, they've got some wheels right on the bottom here and they've got a button right in the middle. Now if I push this button, I can literally flip this so that the wheels are facing up and the firm side surface is facing down. So this allows me to slide it along the ground. To be honest with you, I pretty much only use it with the wheels down because I like the instability that offers. But if you're just getting started, then this would work to put non wheel side down. So let me show you something you can do with this. For example, you get down into a knee position like this. You let your arms come apart in a fly motion and back together and again apart and together. Another unstable exercise that I like to do with this is you can get to this position, corkscrew position, and you can literally do a push up, which you'll find to be slightly unstable with these handles, but actually easier on the wrist than a normal push up. And then you can rotate around. Notice how this thing's trying to slide underneath me. But I can rotate around, reach for the sky, and then come back down. And as you can see, this is tough. I mean, this is incorporating a lot of muscles. It's kind of like a suspension trainer style workout. Then I can do the other thing to the same side. I can do regular push ups, of course, a few other exercises that you can do. And the things come with like a whole manual with like 20 different exercises. You can basically, in between all of your push up type of sets, do things like deadlifts where you're just coming down standing up and you can press them overhead. They weigh about four or five pounds each, but they're really, really cool in terms of being able to give yourself an unstable surface that you can do things on. And, you know, if you're just getting started, for example, you know, let me show you one of the things that you can do. I can put this like this, put this one stable side down. Use this for a surface, get down to that knee position again, and then just do single arm flies like so. So there's a lot of different variety with these things, but they're pretty cool and they're really good, especially for your chest, your triceps, your shoulders. I like them for swimmers. And as you can see, with my rather difficult attempt to do a corkscrew exercise, they actually are pretty challenging, especially wheel side down. So great workout that you can do on your kitchen floor or really any surface in your home. So another geeky home exercise tool straight from Ben dreuxfitness.com check it out. It's the Perfirmer and you can check it out. I believe the website is perfirmer.com but I'll put a link underneath the video for you. So thanks for watching.
