How to Safely Enhance your Brain with Nootropics

A short YouTube talk advising cautious, informed use of nootropics ("smart drugs") to enhance cognitive performance. The speaker contrasts pop-culture fantasies of instant mental superpowers with practical risks—nutrient depletion, crashes, and long-term harm—and recommends supporting any nootropic use with appropriate minerals, amino acids, healthy fats, and anti-inflammatories.

So you've probably seen the movie Limitless, right? In which Bradley Cooper's character has access to this pill that he consumes and all of a sudden his brain gets transformed into superhuman status. After that movie was produced, there was another movie in which Scarlett Johansson played the character Lucy, where somehow this bag of spoiler alert smart drugs breaks open inside her gut and turns her into a mental superhuman. And no doubt you've heard about Silicon Valley executives and CEOs and college students, and frankly, people from all over the world starting to turn to these things like nootropics or what are also called smart drugs to amp up their cognitive performance. Admittedly, I myself have even used some of these compounds. Frankly, it can be a confusing tangled web when you begin to take a deep dive into everything from Racetams to nootropic infused teas, to coffees with 18 different compounds added to them, to different pills that you can swallow that supposedly keep you awake all day long for hyper productivity. The question is, what's safe and what's not? What works and what doesn't? How can you make responsible choices right when it comes to nootropics or smart drugs without actually destroying your brain? Well, let me give you an example of a scenario in which you really would want to be careful with something like this. Take what are known as Nootropics. So you'll often see these marketed as Racetams or Modafinil, also known as Provigil. Typically they are synthetic compounds marketed as smart drugs or nootropics that do really speed up the dials in your brain, so to speak. They cause everything to spin faster. Well, when everything spins faster in your brain, you actually have to use nutrients responsible for supporting your brain at a more rapid pace. So look at it this way. Your brain needs minerals in order to operate properly. We're talking about minerals like say magnesium or potassium or sodium. Your brain needs things like amino acids, which are precursors to neurotransmitters. So it needs things like theanine and taurine and other building blocks that you tend to get from proteins. Your brain also needs certain anti inflammatories to shut down the inflammation that can happen from excessive brain activity. We're talking about things like, oh, curcumin is a popular example. Another common one that you'd find, for example from a mushroom would be lion's mane. And so when you begin to introduce something like a nootropic, let's say you decide you're going to take Racetam or Modafinil and you spin up your brain at a really high capacity, you can deplete these nutrients really quickly. So you need to be careful when you step into this world of smart drugs and neurotropics that you actually know what you're doing, that you take a more holistic approach. There's actually at least 42 different ingredients. There's a whole host of ingredients that you can use to support your brain, but they have to be balanced properly, they have to be put together properly so that you're not actually say, just dumping Modafinil or Racetam willy nilly into your body and getting a pretty good cognitive high for two hours or four hours, or in some cases, 24 hours, and then getting a horrible crash or worse yet, long term depleting things like minerals, things like fats, things like neurotransmitters and amino acid building blocks that your brain needs. So I do have a takeaway for you from this video. Rather than running from the concept of movies like Limitless and Lucy, I actually encourage you to engage in a little bit of better living through science or a little bit of better living through nature. Go out and find one of these compounds. Like perhaps it's a coffee or a tea that has a nootropic or a smart drug or an herbal compound added to it. Perhaps it's a smattering of a whole bunch of ingredients designed to optimize your brain. Try it. See how you feel, see how you think, see what happens to your body. But before you do that, educate yourself. Make sure that you're supporting yourself with adequate amounts of amino acids, adequate amounts of healthy fats, adequate amounts of minerals, and the things that will help your brain cope with the fact that it operates at a slightly higher capacity. When you're using these things. Be safe, be responsible, and enjoy becoming limitless.
