Tattooed Crossfitter To Bearded Monk: Mike Bledsoe - The Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast

This transcript excerpt captures Mike Bledsoe describing how hearing Tim Ferriss on Joe Rogan and attending the "Accelerate" marketing conference (Evan Pagan) led him to reconsider psychedelic mushrooms. He recounts prior skepticism (military background), difficulty with empathy exercises at the conference, and an intuitive idea that mushrooms could help him process and 'reset' for productivity and empathy development.
Foreign.
I was getting into that. But what really, what really triggered that is I was, I was interested in that for productivity. But I had listened to Joe Rogan's podcast. I'm just going to tell a little bit of a story here. It's a little bit personal and I think some people might go, holy, that's okay, we're naked.
You can get personal.
Yeah. So I was listening to Tim Ferriss on Joe Rogan's podcast. And Tim Ferriss is a guy I respect and, you know, his four hour work week is like, really changed my life in a lot of positive ways as an entrepreneur. Like, it really caused me to think about how to approach business differently. And so when Tim Ferriss speaks, I listen and they start talking about magic mushrooms. And Tim Ferriss goes, oh yeah, like every six months I eat like a, like a half gallon bag of mushrooms to kind of hit the reset button.
That's a lot more than the standardized 3 gram dose of psilocybin.
Yeah. I mean, and, and, and Joe was surprised by that. And who knows what really the dosage he's talking about.
Right.
And I was like. And up to that point I was like, I thought all that stuff was dumb. Like, yeah, I'd been in the military. Like, I had that mentality.
Or dangerous or unhealthy.
Exactly.
That was my, that was my impression of it was, it's just going to destroy your liver. So, you know, go, error.
Just like, exactly, exactly. And so he says that. And so it came up on my radar and I was like, what is going on? Months later, I go to a conference. It's a marketing conference, seven days long, super intense, and there's a psychedelic art that is around this conference. And we were doing these exercises on empathy at the conference. Because if you're studying marketing at all.
What conference was this?
Accelerate by Evan Pagan.
Oh, yeah.
So I'm sitting there and I'm going, and we're doing these empathy exercises because if you have a lot of empathy, then you can connect with your audience better. Right?
Right.
I could not do the empathy exercises. Like, we're teaming up with people. I've got this worksheet and I'm looking at somebody and I'm like struggling. I've never been so frustrated in my life. The whole week goes by and I learned a lot and I just feel like I had to digest it. And for some reason I had like this intuitive understanding. I was like, I was like, I think that if I eat mushrooms that it'll help me digest this information. And figure out what's really important and what's not.
Nobody told you that. You just thought of it.
I think it was like I had heard people talking about things, but I was like, I just had, like this. It was like. It just hit me on Saturday night, I'm walking down the street to go get dinner, and I'm like, I, I, I'm supposed to eat mushrooms. Like, like, I don't know exactly why couldn't.
