The Best Way To Test How Healthy Your Heart Is: Treadmill EKG

Ben Greenfield undergoes a treadmill EKG stress test following the Bruce Protocol, aiming to reach 85% of his maximum heart rate. The clinicians explain target heart rate calculations and monitor his recovery immediately after the test ends.
Questions this video answers
Bruce Protocol (workload increases every three minutes).
220 minus your age.
85% of maximum.
100% maximum = 182 bpm; 85% target = 154 bpm.
About five minutes (monitoring recovery for ~5 minutes).

All right.
Yeah, we could turn on.
Yeah, we can turn it back on.
You guys like this? What's it. You guys have automated or No? I prefer not automated, but.
Just.
Okay.
Oh, this is your automated thing.
That's why it's so funky. Oh, sorry. You the. Yeah.
Is the.
The real ones the pink one?
Yeah, that should. That's okay.
Think you want to get a cardiac workup, Vanessa?
Yes.
Well, little does she know that she was selected earlier, that whatever you do, she has to do double take them out.
Absolutely.
I do cook on the skillet on low heat. Cook with oil.
I was gonna say, at least use good oil.
Yeah. Avocado.
Well, who knows? Maybe after hearing all this, you'll just become one of those raw foodists.
Bacteria, giardia, parasites, etc are.
Less of a concern once there's oxidizing fat.
All right, arm forward. So we're going to go ahead and start. Okay, Here we go. So just go ahead and begin walking.
Great. So the way that this test works is every three minutes, it goes higher and faster. It's on a predetermined course, if you will. We use something called Bruce Protocol. Bruce Protocol is pretty standard throughout the United States. It's what most cardiology offers. What's over here?
But you said you were a book guy and not a TV guy, so we didn't plan anything for you.
Where's my book holder? Where's my candle stand?
Right.
And typically, you know, we will do this. We have a couple goals we like to achieve. Of course, maximum heart rate is one of them. When we, of course, you know, no secret, you know, 220 minus your age, you know, is your maximum heart rate. So we're looking to get to that. And most of our healthy patients don't have significant amount of orthopedic issues where we're going to cause more harm than good. But we like to get everybody up there that we can to a minimum of 85%, though.
So for you today, because I do believe we're doing online betting on how long you go, we have to take you all the way.
Yesterday was squat day, so we'll see how that goes.
What is our Target heart rate?
182 or 154. 182 or 154. Remember, 100% is going to be that 182. And then we said 85% was good, so that'll be that 154. Yeah, no problem.
You're fine.
What do you need?
Goggles? Where is that I didn't see it. Oh.
I like that guy.
He's dealing with some crap right now.
Uh oh.
So we'll see he gets through the storm. You've done some stress echoes stress test? A few. Right. Yesterday with. Yesterday you did one. Oh, good, good, good, good. We may have one afterwards so we can. If you.
I want to test where I had to be on one of these things for three and a half hours.
Hey, how are you? Hi. Welcome. You landed.
Did you have the device over your mouth like you do now when you did that? Yeah.
Do you want to come over and just come?
That's right.
Yes.
Yeah.
That's a long day.
Yeah. It was just like this.
Hi, Kira.
You're doing great. So obviously we've transitioned up.
I'm good. I just have a patient on the treadmill so I can go back.
Exciting point yet.
But we'll get turn into work organized. If you do want, Dr. Anant knows.
So we can orient his staff also just in case anyone calls. And then Prahar, when you're at the site, I can give you the password for the door so you have all that information and we can, we can. There's desks, so we're at four minutes. There's phones, everything.
So we can just start organizing the signage and everything like that. What. What we need to do.
Okay, no problem. Great, thanks. Okay, Very good. Bye.
Doing good. Doing good.
So four minutes 35 seconds on the belt. Heart rate's still 94.
Great. So in about 30 seconds we'll go ahead and transition to the next stage and it will turn into a little bit more work.
He's not even spritzing yet.
We're at 96.
Yeah.
Young, healthy guys. The endopad is torture on you. Your stress tests are torture on us.
Good. So here we go. We're going to transition to that next stage.
It's.
Good.
Doing good.
Seven minutes. Heart rate's finally up to 125.
Superman is unbreakable. We're in good shape.
Doing good. Heart rate going up.
It.
Great.
Check your heart rate.
I was a professional athlete.
I can get up there and compete with him.
I was a professional basketball player.
Oh, really?
Oh, wow.
Holler in Syracuse in New York.
Then I played Israel, Canada, Ukraine, Poland, Holland coached around the world. And then I got into content creation.
Fantastic.
Great.
Doing good. So next stage is either going to be a very long stride or a low run.
Yeah.
How you guys doing? You guys have a study.
What we can do is I can have the machine because I think we have one treadmill.
Awesome. Doing great. Coming up on 10 minutes.
We can move the machine. Resting echoes.
Heart rate's 152.
Okay, so. Okay, so we may. Once we're done with this machine, you can just take it to the other room and just get started and then we'll try to get our final. Our last treadmill just done.
Okay.
We should be relatively. We should be done soon.
Yeah.
Just to make sure. Thumbs up. Doing okay. Yeah, Perfect. Good job. Don't want you talking, want you just doing what you're doing. Concentrating on that breathing. 160. So we have met our 85% mark again. Trying to get closest to 182 as possible.
Thank you.
All right, so in 15 seconds, do you feel comfortable going into the next stage for the same minute? Okay, give me a minute. Okay, perfect.
We're at 170. We are 67.
Good.
He's gonna recover really quickly.
Yeah.
So we got.
So that's the other part that we see with the stress test. And then remember right back over to the table. If you have to stop, just simply say stop. It takes me a second.
Doing.
Try to give me 40 seconds and we will stop.
Anything sooner. Just need to hear from you. Doing good. Keep it up. 30 seconds. Doing great. 171. Going for 182. Less than 30, Charlotte.
Just doing great.
Keep it up, keep it up. 20 seconds. You're gonna go back over to the table. Left arm, left side. In 15 seconds. Doing good. 174. Keep it up. 10 seconds. Home stretch. Best you got right here. Everything, everything. Five seconds. Three, two. Get ready for it to slow down. It's not going to stop.
Okay, there we go.
All right. Good. Left arm, left side.
All right, we'll get the lights if we pop up. Perfect.
Good.
Come on over toward me a little bit.
Good.
Blow it out. Good on the outs. Try to slow it down for me a little bit.
Good.
Breathe out. Hold breathe.
Good.
Keep it going.
Out.
Good job. Good job.
Good job.
Yep, we love those outs. Out.
Perfect. Your rate is coming down. Everything is normalizing. Doing good.
On a side note, you probably have a very good discussion on mask and full on.
Feelings. An unbiased opinion on. Listen, you did it, but you're here. You know, you're not green, you're not blue.
You know, it's not easy.
I consider it to be more labored. It's harder. It's almost like, you know, a little bit of a weight on your lung, but essentially you're still moving oxygen. You're still moving everything.
This whole. This whole mask wearing mandate is great for everybody's cardiovascular function.
Still getting a little bit of hypoxic.
That's right.
But you've already turned back to normal. Yes. Huh. Good. Heart rate's already back down to 78.
Phenomenal.
And we were just not even two minutes in post.
Incredible.
Good.
So we monitor reef about five minutes afterwards just to make sure that everything is good and returns back to normal.
Titanic position.
If you want to go ahead and lay on your back.
Kind of like a little gulag if people throw. Don't eat no coffee, come in, put a bunch of wires on, get on treadmill.
Don't say anything for 15 minutes. No move.
You can advertise this as kind of sort of like a little Navy SEAL training thing.
And. And I expect five star yelp review. So I don't think it's a tall request.
That's right.
You.
You had me at hello.
Give me a glass of. Of wine on my way out the door.
All right, so we're three minutes 20 in post. You're doing good. Heart rate's 81. Everything's back to normal. So we're looking at all the segments and how everything looks.
Okay, we should be done. I think it was 12:30, so we'll get ready for some blood work.
Yeah.
We'Ll just draw. Give me a quick second. Michael.
Yeah.
I need a solid favorite. We have one patient for a treadmill. Yeah, Just. Could I have. Could I get your help on that? Just a plain treadmill. She's going to do resting for souf.
Okay.
So we'll move the machine over to the other room. Okay. And I'm gonna get his blood drawn. Oh, good. So we have time. Yep, Definitely.
Yeah.
Yes, we do. Med office.
And it should be one cedars one. Okay.
Med office. Yeah. And then it's numeral one, cedars, c, e, d, a, r, s. No. And then one again. That should work.
How are you feeling, Ben? Good, good, good.
When do we do the bench press test?
That's next.
All right, you can go ahead and sit up.
Okay.
And. Come on.
Right here.
Perfect.
I promise I have no pleasure from.
That, by the way. No, that's okay. I'm not a hairy guy, so it's not too bad.
I do have some people that ask me to do two at a time. Yes.
All right. And perfect. Oh, thank you for the assistance. No, no, no.
Just watch this. Yeah. Here we go.
Pressure on camera.
Hold on.
I know. I tried to rush through this.
All right, you found the Good one.
I know other patient I was waiting that I didn't that that had a. Was on the schedule but this.
What do you think?
Now I don't have to trash talk because I know you can get that one.
Well if you're coming on Tuesdays. If you're on Tuesdays for sure. No that's okay.
I mean.
I mean listen. Monday I. I did. I did one study yesterday so I definitely keep it.
I know Tuesdays. Tuesdays will be a problem unless we have two son like two machines. Two.
You and I both are going to.
Come to a volume five days. We will, right?
You're watching or listening.
The thing is there's going to be space upstairs with the nuclear sweep we'll be looking at because I will send.
Patients size particle count to do that. A lot more factors that are more appropriate.
It will be.
I need to figure out what to.
Do.
Long term because I'm only here two days a week and it's expensive for two days a week and I need something five days a week.
So I don't know. I don't know how it's gonna.
I think the thing is I'll probably.
Have to go to Sun Micro.
We need a system where crystal. Oh, my blood really more efficient. Efficient.
Also I need the treadmill. Sorry.
Yeah, give me one second. Yeah, let me bring. Let me talk to Amy here.
Easy peasy.
Oh, Amy, is the treadmill patient ready? He's okay. Michael, will we just need to take. Yeah, he'll do it now. Charlotte was going out here. Yeah, we're doing. She's drawing him. Okay.
I'm gonna go with Bianna.
All right.
Sculpting.
Oh, good.
Oh, perfect.
All right.
Off we go.
So I think that was our last procedure here. Yeah.
All right. Ben. Ben, this is Amy.
Hi Amy. Good to meet you.
This is Ben Greenfield, the biohacking.
Oh, cool. Amazing.
Yeah, we got your blood so I think so.
So what we'll do is. Is the video on? No, no, you can keep it on. Chat with the doctor real quick.
I need her right now though.
All right. So that was a whole battery. Whole battery of tests. Now what you guys are going to see next is you're going to go to to one other facility for one more test. You know the name of the test that we're.
The corner calcium scan.
They're going to be the coronary calcium scan. And then after that, once you've seen the core on your calcium scan, you will be subjected to an executive summary with me and the doc about the results. Of everything that you've just seen me go through. And again, show notes for all this are going to be@BenGreenfieldFitness.com HortPodcast so I hope you're having fun with this one.
