World's Toughest Mudder Checklist And Tough Mudder Packing Video

Ben Greenfield (aka "Desert Goggles") walks through his complete packing list and race-day kit for the World’s Toughest Mudder, covering foot and hand care, cold-weather items, compression and joint support, first aid and emergency electronics, lighting, detailed nutrition strategy (calories/hour, specific mixes and supplements), and clothing including wetsuit and layered compression kits. The tone is practical, informal, and promotional (brands and discount codes are promised).
Oh, hey, you're right on time. I was just packing for the world's toughest mudder. My name is Ben Greenfield, but they call me Desert Goggles. Come on in.
This is my crib in Las Vegas. My big sweet. I want to show you some stuff. So racing the world's toughest motor, you're going to get a chance to see all the clothing, the gear, the nutrition, all the goodies that I'm going to be taking to the race in no particular order of importance. So let's dive right in, shall we? Alright, down to the floor. Foot care, as you may know, is super duper important during a long event in which you'll be running 50, 80, 90, perhaps 100 miles. We'll see. Or running 20 miles and going to gamble. You need good foot care either way. So Foot Care 101. You want to put goo all over your feet. I'm using this stuff called Run Goo Run goo. Discovered this when I did Seal Fit Kokoro. They're based out of Encinitas, California. And I completely smear my entire foot, armpits, crotch, back of the knees, anywhere that would tend to get shaped. Including these two big boys right here. Yeah, we don't want the dinner plates getting all bloodied. So chafing cream next. After shaving cream comes polypropylene liners. Okay, that's bulletproof. Round two for your feet. Next come wool socks. I'm just using some basic Nike wool socks. And then come the actual footwear. I've got a couple pairs of Reebok All Terrains. And then for when the going gets really tough, these brook ghosts. Brook ghosts. And these are a little bit more of a cushioned shoe for when the feet get a little bit sore. Not that that's gonna happen. I'm just saying if it did. And then gaiters, just a couple pair of gator wraps called Gator wraps to keep mud and, I don't know, snow out of the shoes if it snows in the desert, which it's bound to. Okay, let's move on to hand care. Couple pairs of lightweight gloves. And then because it's supposed to get to about 33, 35 degrees in the evening, heavier set of gloves. I don't like to use gloves that much. They don't do well on monkey bars, etc. But neither do frigid cold hands that don't move. So in addition to that, speaking of frigid cold hands, hand warmers, which can also be used as foot warmers, and then a few silver Thermal blankets. These aren't for me. This is for my lovely Sherpa wife to stay warm because I'm not gonna get cold. You know, I'm a rock star. But just in case, I've got five of them, so just saying. Okay, nice beanie. Ben Greenfield fitness beanie, or as you Canadians say, a toque. And of course, my awesome epic bar bandana, just for the desert storms. I don't like eating sand. Okay, next up, compression. We've got a couple pairs of compression sleeves here for the calves to keep the muscles from getting torn up from all the bouncing. One pair of mediums. And for when the Las Vegas style swelling from being on your feet all day starts to set in. A large pair because medium tends to get kind of tight if you've ever been on your feet for a long period of time. As well as some knee sleeves just in case the knees get beat up. Especially because I plan on, if the day is warm enough, wearing shorts during the day. So these knee sleeves will protect the shorts. And then also some arm coolers. These are DeSoto arm coolers. And really, I'm more wearing them for protection than for the cooling effect. But just to protect the elbows a little bit. I don't want my biceps getting all scarred up. I need those bad boys.
Okay, little bit of kinesio tape. This should have been over in first aid, so what the heck, let's move over to first aid. Kinesio tape is just to support any body parts that may get messed up. Bunch of band aids. I carry a ton of these. Action wipes. They're like baby wipes on steroids. They're called Action wipes with eucalyptus. Anyways, and by the way, below this video, I'm going to post a crap pola of discount codes for you guys if you're packing for your own toughest mudder. And I've got badger. Just regular natural sunscreen, a little bit of lip balm, a little bit of silvisorb, just a silver antimicrobial. And then for me, sore muscles after the race, a topical gel infused with cannabidiol, not to be confused with thc. I would never get high or drunk or anything like that after a race. This is just cbd. Okay? In addition to that, right next to my first aid, this is kind of important. This is for my dear Sherpa. This is a solar charger that will charge a laptop, phone, whatever. I use these when I hunt. Comes in handy when you're out in the desert, too. So this will allow my Wife to play candy games on her phone while I'm out running. Okay, next up, we've got lights, two pairs of headlamps, one backup, one big bad boy. Princeton Tech waterproof. Runs on four AA batteries. This puts out a ton of lumens. This is just a Petzl backup. And of course, backup batteries as well. Very important. Two strobes. Use these. Nathan sport strobe lights. This will allow me to be found. Should I go 10 miles off course and I send out the helicopters, I will be rescued. Okay, let's move over into nutrition, since it's right here. First of all, my mainstay of my nutrition is this stuff called ischiate endurance. This is what the famous Tamil Mahari Indian tamamohari. Tamamohara Tamamoharo. I don't know. It's that random Indian tribe in Mexico. They use chia seeds and honey and stuff when they run. This is all that in a powder. I'm gonna have about 100 or so calories of this per hour, along with the second part of this natty stack. It's made by this company, Natural Force. I'll put a big discount code for you guys in the. In the notes underneath the video. This is recovery nectar, but I'm going to be using it during. Going to be using it in Dorit. Goes great in margaritas, but it's like coconut aminos, spirulina, macaroot powder, just all sorts of stuff that will grow hair on my chest and make rocket fuel come out my bum. So I go fast. And of course, raw tea. This is like beet juice, nitric oxide precursors, yerba mate, a ton of wakefulness inducing compounds. So even that once I mix all of that into a thermal water bottle, I just use these. I love these ones from Hammer because they have the wide mouth on them. I'll mix all that into a water bottle for the equivalent of about 200 calories an hour. But I know that for going for a long period of time, I need closer to 300ish calories per hour. So I'll also throw down one of these Onit oatmega bars. I've got this one's vanilla almond crisp, but this is my favorite. Chocolate mint. And speaking of which, mint. This is my old standby for if anything goes sour in the tummy during the race. Humms Peppermint. You just chomp on a couple and if you're vomiting, it will either make the vomit come out the other side or just block up both sides altogether. Either way, you'll be a happy camper kind of oral iv. This is to stay hydrated. This stuff is awesome. I had them on my podcast. Some people think it's woo woo water. Some people think it tastes like liquid semen. I don't know what liquid semen tastes like so I can't tell you about that. But it's called ultra concentrate hydration fluid. It's. It helps your body to be able to absorb any water that you do drink with it. Okay. So I will have one of these about every two hours. Okay. And I'll be going through a water bottle full of the natty stack every hour. And my lovely Sherpa will be mixing me new water bottles full so that I roll in. Just grab my water bottle. I'm ready to rumble. I'm also caring to keep muscles from cannibalizing and because central nervous system fatigue happens when muscles break down and the tryptophan created from the amino acids of those muscles breaking down crosses your blood brain barrier makes you go to sleep just like after turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. I'm taking 10 grams of nature aminos per hour. These are essential amino acids, not to be confused with branch chain amino acids. Big difference. This stuff is liquid gold. It is expensive. I will admit and I will also admit that I sell it on my website. But I swear by this stuff for long efforts. Ten an hour if you're small, five an hour. I will definitely be doing that as well. And then I've got just in case one falls off from the cliff dive, the 30, 40 according to some people, the hundred foot cliff dive. I've got a couple of these fuel belts. These are just basic fuel belt crush. I like minimalist on fuel belt, little zipper there for things that I might need out there like I don't know, beef jerky sticks, cigarettes, you name it. But more importantly, a belt for my water bottle. Okay, let's go ahead and move on to a few other items of clothing that I want to point out to you. So I am of course going to be wearing the ever important wetsuit. Wearing the Blu 70 Helix thin panels and custom thin legs. The nice chest. This is the Timex version. This is designed to enhance both swimming and. Who are we kidding? Not running. But I'm gonna run in it anyways. All night long. Helps in those frigid temperatures. And of course I'll have the Blu 70 cap as well. Underneath my Blu 70 wetsuit I'll be wearing some moisture wicking clothing. I'm not super brand specific. I've got A pair of slicks compression gear. Here I have a pair of Hylek compression gear. I brought two extra sets of compression gear, but this is an Under Armour top. And then just basic compression gear. This will go underneath the wetsuit. This is like the nighttime kit for daytime. I've got a couple of shirts. One for Saturday, one for Sunday. Check out who I'm representing on Sunday. That's right. This is the Ben Greenfield fitness shirt, limited edition, worn by me. My stank is all over this thing marked by yours truly. One for Saturday, one for Sunday for the short sleeves. And I do have, like I mentioned, shorts to run in, but should I decide that the ground is just too hard, gravelly, Whatever. I've also got longer compression tights. I can run in during the day as well. So I have compression tights for both the day and the night. These ones are like my favorite. They're the Skins A400 compression tights. They've got like holes in the crotch and the knees from racing Spartans, but there you have it. Okay, that is it for that clothing. And then over here, just a few other warm weather or cool weather items. I've got a Castelli thermal vest. Castelli makes awesome gear. This is all my Team Timex stuff. A waterproof or windproof that I'll wear over the wetsuit if it's windy, which it's supposed to be. Well, storm supposed to blow in a nor', easter, as they say. I don't know. I've never worked on a crabbing ship, so I don't know if that's what you call it, but that's what I'd call it as a nor'. Easter. And then another top that's more of like a thermal top. So that covers about all the gear. We got our feet, we got our hands, we got our compression, we got our stuff over.
Sam.
