120: Transform Your To-Do List into a Results List — Leanne’s Favorite Time-Saving System
8 Dec 2025 · 6 min
Leanne Hughes reframes to-do lists by replacing tasks with desired results. Instead of 'clean the pool,' aim for 'create a welcoming environment for a Fourth of July gathering.' Instead of 'wash sheets,' aim for 'fresh bed for an excellent Monday night's sleep.' This shift, learned from Alan Weiss, connects daily work to what actually matters.

Ooh, do I have a favorite time saving system for you. This one is so juicy. My friend Leanne Hughes, who she's been on the podcast, she's featured in the book, she's an all around incredible person whom I adore and I mention constantly on this podcast. We trade boxers back and forth over a long arc of time, but it's how we stay caught up across from New York to Australia, across time and space and many years of friendship. And she shared one of these gems that she's learned from participating in Mastermind groups with Alan Weiss. That was so good. I asked her, leanne, could you please record a submission for the My favorite Time Saving System segment of this show? Because I know free timers need to hear this. I know that we could all benefit so much. I'm not going to give away the surprise, although basically the title of this podcast already does. Without further ado, here's Leanne to share one of many gems of wisdom that she has learned from Alan Weiss.
Hello Jenny and free timers. This is leanne hughes from leannehughewes.com I'm just hopping on the microphone to share something that I heard last week that has already had a dramatic impact in the way that I try to free up my time but also plan my day and my week as well. Just occurred through a mentoring session I had with Alan Weiss, the million dollar consultant, and he dropped it so nonchalantly and I was like, this is a game change. And that is instead of having a to do list, have a results list instead. So if you think about it every day, we'll get up and we'll write our tasks for the day. They're not very inspiring. The example that Alan gave when he mentioned this was he had clean the pool on his to do list, but he shifted that task to a result. And the result was, how can I create a welcoming environment for my family for our fourth of July gathering? And when you start shifting it to results, it actually creates its own energy, its own buzz, and you actually feel excited. Do it today. For example, a task would have been write a proposal for a client. I look at that, that's not very exciting. But instead I've shifted the result to how can I get the client excited for us to work together? And so instead of writing a proposal, now what I'm actually doing is creating a video proposal where I get to share my enthusiasm and excitement and some cool ideas for this potential client. But the reason I'm doing that is because I shifted the question to a result of creating excitement versus the input of writing a proposal. Even something as simple as wash the bed sheets today has shifted to have a fresh bed for an excellent Monday night's sleep. Even when approaching the workshops, I deliver instead of deliver this workshop, it is how do I create buzz and enthusiasm for this topic, for the people that show up today? So that's it. It's just a little reframe, but I think it's extremely powerful. And when you start doing this, you realize that some of the tasks, if they don't have a result or aren't linked to anything quite meaningful for you, for your life, for your business, it might be a good approach then to reconsider. Do you actually need to do it? What is the result you need? And work back from there. So that's the idea. What can you do to turn your task list, your to do list into a results list? I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed even this week, just creating my results list.
So good. I love this. Leanne, thank you for submitting and sharing these wise words via Ellen Weiss. I have benefited from his books so much over the years on value based pricing and I say kudos to you for going directly to the source, working with him in all these different ways. I just love Alan's examples. I love your examples and I love the idea of auditing our to do list and saying, of course, do I need to be doing any of this at all? But for the things that do feel important, reframing it, transforming them from a to do to a result. So the one that I'll share to get specific is I often talk about trying to land a podcast sponsor for this show and it's on my to do list, like finish the media kit for the podcasts or create the legal agreement for the podcast it's stuff that does not necessarily get my juices flowing in of themselves. But if instead of saying things like create the media kit, if I said land a resonant sponsor for the free time podcast, that I can authentically rave about their software, their product or their service and it's a mutual fit for both of us. It's almost like that's the vision. Landing the partnership or having a smashingly successful pilot partnership and then creating abundance all the way around. For me, for the sponsoring partner, and for all of you who are here listening.
