5 Things You Should NEVER Say to the Holy Spirit

Jeremiah Tipton identifies five things that grieve the Holy Spirit: saying "not yet" to delay obedience, telling the Spirit to "hurry up," refusing certain areas of your heart, demanding proof before you act, and trying to limit the Spirit's work. Each reflects a heart not fully surrendered.
Chapters
From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. This is why it's so important that we watch the words that we speak, because the words that we speak can reveal hidden issues within the heart. I wanna share with you some uncomfortable truths that will challenge you in a way that will ultimately draw you closer to the person of the Holy Spirit. This will enhance your friendship with the Holy Spirit, your walk in divine unity, in greater measures if you simply don't speak these words. I'm sharing with you 5 things you should never say to the Holy Spirit. Now, in Luke 6:45, we read this: A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. So this is about more than just the pronunciation of negative things. This has to do with the fact that certain mindsets and attitudes that we have within, certain sinful dispositions ultimately produce these things that we say, maybe even subtly, that we should not say. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that you pronounce these exact words or you say these exact phrases, but perhaps these attitudes, these mindsets manifest themselves in ways that are difficult to see. This is why you have to pay attention, not necessarily being paranoid, but being vigilant. In Ephesians 4:30, we read a powerful truth. And do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. In other words, the way that we behave can hurt the Holy Spirit. Did you know that the Holy Spirit has feelings? He has a heart. He can be grieved. So those mindsets and attitudes, those hidden areas in our heart that we don't correct, ultimately produce those words that we speak. So again, this is about more than just words. This is about the heart. And so I want you to do some real honest reflection, some real honest self-evaluation. Be open before the Lord and don't be defensive, but instead listen to these various different phrases and ask yourself, am I either saying these things aloud or possibly maybe carrying these types of thoughts in my heart? Do these attitudes have any place in me? And as you begin to expose and eliminate these attitudes, these mindsets, you're going to see that that fellowship that you have with the Holy Spirit, that union that you already have will be unhindered because you're walking in obedience in a way that doesn't grieve him. Now, this first phrase has to do with delay of obedience. This first thing we say to the Holy Spirit is not yet. In other words, we're not exactly okay with stepping into what God is telling us to step into. God says, go, we say, not now. God says, move, we say, in my own time. God says, take advantage of this opportunity, and we say, well, Lord, let me pray about it. Isn't that funny that we often hide behind these spiritually sounding phrases like, let me pray about it, when what we really mean is, God, I don't quite trust what you're saying yet, so let me get to the point until I'm comfortable and I trust in my ability to sustain what you promised. Remember this, delay is disobedience. I understand that sometimes God will speak something to us concerning the future. Sometimes he'll give us a promise or an instruction that should be fulfilled in a certain timeframe. But then there are times when the Holy Spirit speaks and he's telling you, go now, do it now, say it now, act now, correct it now. And we say, wait, I'm not comfortable with this. And we're like children dragging our feet on the floor as our Father tries to pull us along. And as we delay, we are really revealing our lack of trust in him. I hear so many Christians today talking about how they're sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Oh, I'm sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Oh, I hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. Oh, God is always talking to me. Well, it's not really all that impressive when you can hear from God. What really matters is, can you obey God? You see, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit isn't about how often or how clearly you can hear him, but about how quickly you respond when he speaks. To be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit is to be reactive to the voice of the Holy Spirit so that when he speaks, there's movement. When he instructs, you go. In Psalm 119:60, we read, I will hurry without delay to obey your commands. That means you honor the voice of the Holy Spirit in your life so much that when he speaks an instruction, there's movement. When he gives you that guidance for the moment, you say, okay, Holy Spirit, I trust you and I'm going to step into what you're telling me to do. We often miss windows of divine favor, divine opportunities, divine connections because we're dragging our feet, calling it wisdom when really it's fear. James 4:17 says, remember, it is a sin to know what you ought to do And then not do it. So if God says to do something and you delay, if God says to do something and you withhold your obedience, you're in sin. So go when the Holy Spirit tells you to go. Give when the Holy Spirit tells you to give. Change what the Holy Spirit tells you to change when the Holy Spirit tells you to change it. If he tells you to begin a work, begin a work. If he tells you to end a project, end a project. If he tells you to say yes to something, say yes emphatically. If he tells you to say no to something, say no immediately. Be sensitive to his voice, no longer delaying, but trusting him and moving as he instructs. The next thing we should never say to the Holy Spirit has also to do with his timing, and that is hurry up. On one side, we may be dragging our feet saying, not yet, God, or I'm not quite comfortable with that, or I don't quite see exactly what you're doing, so I'm gonna hold off. Yet on the other hand, we're rushing into things that most of the times in our heart we know aren't God, yet because of our stubbornness, because of our greed, because of our desires, we push into that which we know we ought not to push into. Now watch this. I love how the Holy Spirit moves here in Acts 2:1-4. This is a little different than what we've read in other instances. On the day of Pentecost, all the believers are meeting together in one place. Now watch this. Suddenly there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm. I love that word, suddenly. And it filled the house where they were sitting. Then what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them, and everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. Now up to this point, the Holy Spirit had not moved like this. As I said, this was a unique move of the Holy Spirit for that time. But notice here that the believers had been waiting for this day of Pentecost. Jesus had given them Instructions, wait, go and tarry, and the promise of the Father you will receive. And so they didn't try to rush God. They didn't try to get him to move faster. Instead, they went into the place of waiting. Really, waiting is a lost art these days. Why? Because everything we have and everything that we want, we usually get like that, at our convenience, on our time, according to our preferences, delivered to the door, delivered same day. Amen. exactly as we want it. Everything can be customized, everything can be instant, everything can be according to our preferences. And because of that, we somehow expect that God is going to also be the same way. No, sometimes you need to wait. He is the Lord, we are the servants. He gives the instructions, we obey. He speaks the word, we trust. We are not on our time. We're on his. And far too many of us, and especially those in ministry, I don't mean to pick on anyone, but it's true in ministry, especially because we feel our cause is so just, we try to rush the Holy Spirit. But it's they that wait upon the Lord that renew their strength. It's those who wait upon the Lord that ultimately see his hand and his favor. We have to go at the pace of grace. Often we think that we know better than God. We think that if God doesn't hurry this up, that we're gonna miss the opportunity. And often we're rushing because we're comparing. Let me say that again, because I believe that's a word for someone. Often we're rushing because we're comparing. They have the nicer things. They have the bigger ministry. They have the better position. They have the better connections. And we think in our minds that God is somehow missing the opportunities. We're looking at everyone else who seems to be passing us by. We're looking at all these wonderful opportunities that seem to be going way out of our reach. And we're saying to the Lord, Lord, hurry, I'm gonna miss this. Lord, hurry, we're gonna miss that connection. Lord, please, let's pick up the pace because if you don't hurry, I'm going to miss this opportunity. Amen. You know, hurry and worry go hand in hand. Hurry and worry come hand in hand. And by the way, hurry diminishes the fruit of the Spirit. Hurry diminishes the expression of the Holy Spirit's power in your life. Hurry brings tension between you and the Holy Spirit because he may not be moving as quickly as you want and you're trying to move far ahead. Now there's this tension. Tension that begins to build. But oh, but in Acts chapter two, what did they do? They waited, and the power came. Hurry results when we want something more than we want to please the Holy Spirit. Let me say that again. Please catch this as a revelation. Hurry results when we want something more than we want to please the Holy Spirit. When you tell the Holy Spirit, "Hurry up!" Again, you might not say those words exactly, but your attitude. Your mindset is rushed and you're getting frustrated with God because he's not moving fast enough. When you say to the Holy Spirit, hurry up, you're really saying, I know better. Number 3, not that. In Acts 7:51, we read, you stubborn people, you are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That's what your ancestors did, and so do you. This resisting of the Holy Spirit comes from a place of stubbornness. It comes from a place of not being able to yield. And often the Holy Spirit is requesting things in our heart that go deep, issues that are deeply rooted in the mind and heart. Maybe there are things you've been carrying since you were a child. Maybe there are things that you are carrying because you got hurt And now you have to hang on to it for fear of being hurt again. Maybe there are areas of your heart that are so dark, secrets that you carry that are so burdensome, things of which you are so ashamed that you hide it and you conceal it and you, you keep it safe to yourself and you say, Holy Spirit, you can have everything else. Just don't touch this. We say, not that, Holy Spirit. You have everything and anything else. just don't touch this issue. Holy Spirit, you can have all of my life, just don't touch that secret sin. Holy Spirit, you can take everything and every part of me, just don't challenge me on my unforgiveness. Holy Spirit, I surrender all, just don't ask me to change that mindset. Anything and everything else, precious Holy Spirit, just not that. And it's rebellion, it's stubbornness. We may be able to justify it emotionally, but we can never justify it biblically. In Hebrews chapter three, verses seven and eight, we read this: That is why the Holy Spirit says today, when you hear his voice, don't harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. I remember years ago, the Lord showed me a vision. Really, it was a dream. And in this dream/vision, I was standing at the entrance of a cave, and on my peripheral vision, I could see a bright light standing before me or beside me. I knew it was the Lord. And the Lord asked me before we entered this cave, may I enter? And I said, yes, Lord, we can enter. And I thought that was interesting that he would ask my permission before we entered into these caverns. And so I said, yes, Lord, we can enter. We stepped into the first section of these caverns. And as soon as we step into that first section, his light filled the room. And I could see the cave-like walls and the rocks and the formations in detail because his light had filled the room. And then the Lord asked again, speaking of the next section of the caverns, before we entered the next chamber, may I have this? Can we enter here? And it went like this on and on for several minutes. where we were going through the caves and the caverns and the sections. And each time he would ask my permission, we would step in and light would fill that section. And finally, we came to this certain section that was especially dark. I don't know how else to describe that other than to say it was a deeper darkness than the other darkness. And I hesitated, and I don't know why I did, but I hesitated. And the Lord said, may I have this? And there was this struggle, this tension, this reservation about giving this room to the Lord. And finally I said, Lord, you can have this section too. And then I woke up after he filled it with light. The Lord told me that this represented the chambers of my heart and the different sections that I would surrender. And he showed me that there are some areas of the heart that we just struggle to give him. This could be an attitude, this could be unforgiveness, this can be defensiveness, cynicism because you've been hurt. This can be a position or a title, success or wealth, a location you're in or a preference that you have, comfort, a pet sin, maybe even a relationship that you're trying to hang on to. And the Holy Spirit is saying, give that to me. And we're saying, Lord, you can have everything else, just don't touch this. That is rebellion, that is idolatry. Now, the next phrase that I wanna cover or the next thing you should never say to the Holy Spirit that I wanna talk to you about is a little more subtle because it can seem so wise and it makes people feel so clever and you feel like you're being spiritual in so doing when you're actually not. I'm gonna share that with you, but first, if you're being challenged by this message and you think other believers need to hear this truth, then make sure that you leave a like on this stream right now. By leaving a like, you're helping to spread the content to more people. You never know who's going to receive the word simply because you left a like. It takes a second of your time. Please do your part and leave that like right now. Also, if you wanna continue to receive this ministry of the Holy Spirit, then make sure that you subscribe to my channel and do click that notification bell so that you don't miss any of the content. Number 4, we say, prove it. And again, this may sound spiritual because it can seem like wisdom. It can seem like you're exercising good judgment. Before I step out, Lord, I want you to prove to me that you can do this. Now I understand, and this is where wisdom takes place, I understand that when we ask for the Lord to show us that it's him, we just wanna be sure that it's him. Like Peter, when he said to the Lord, Lord, if it's you, Call out to me and I'll step out. But he wanted to be sure that it was the Lord first because he wasn't about to step out of the boat if it wasn't the Lord himself. So of course it's okay to verify that it is in fact the Holy Spirit speaking to you. But once you know it's the Holy Spirit speaking to you, there's no need to have him prove anything. Once you know that the Holy Spirit has given you an instruction, there's no need for further discussion. Yet because of our lack of trust, we say, show me, Lord. and I'll believe. Look at Matthew chapter 12, beginning at verse 38. One day, some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority. But Jesus replied, Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for 3 days and 3 nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights. There is a difference between asking for a sign in sincerity and demanding a sign in cynicism. You see, all throughout scripture, we see saints of God asking the Lord to show himself, asking the Lord to prove that it's him speaking, asking the Lord to give them a sign of which direction they should go. There's nothing wrong with that. But here, and in fact, we see that healing and miracles are for today. There's a gift of healing, there's a gift of miracles. So there's nothing wrong in and of itself with asking the Lord for signs. What Jesus in the context here is challenging is this stubborn resistance, this unwillingness to believe God despite the signs that were being shown. So no, it wasn't that they were just asking for a sign, it's that they were demanding one so that they would have God prove to them on their own terms. Again, as I said just a few moments ago, we say, Lord, show me and I'll believe. And he's saying, believe and I'll show you. We're saying, Holy Spirit, prove it and I'll step out. And he says, no, no, no, no, no, that's not how this works. You have to step out and then I'll prove it. And after you know you've heard the Holy Spirit, after you've seen it clearly laid out in the plain teachings of scripture, It's time to act, to step out and walk in faith. Again, it can seem like wisdom. We say, oh, you know, I just need to pray about it. Oh, I wanna exercise wisdom in this area because you can't be too careful. But no, my friend, it is not wisdom to delay or to hesitate or to ask for verification once you know God has spoken. And we do this as if he hasn't proven himself to us before. Time and time again, he's come through. Hasn't he always been there? Hasn't he come through every time? Has he ever failed you? Has he ever failed to keep a promise? No. We want a perfect plan. We want God to show us all of the steps involved before we take that first step. And he's saying, I'm not going to reveal step number 2 and 3 until you take step number 1. Faith is a progressive revelation. If you had the full revelation, It wouldn't require faith. We say, show me and I'll move. He said, move and I'll show you. Sometimes for us, his word just isn't a guarantee enough. Isn't that so sad? Now again, we may never say that outright. We may never blatantly say, Lord, I don't trust what you're doing. But when we hesitate and we disobey because we're waiting for him to prove something, that's when it's revealed that we lack trust in him. That's when it's revealed, the stubbornness of heart, again, disguised as wisdom. This is a life of faith. I'll never forget when our ministry was struggling financially and we were trying to raise funds for a specific project. And I was just getting so frustrated because no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't raise the funds. This was several years ago. So fundraising was very difficult for us then. And I remember I was worried. I was tense. I was all tangled up in emotional knots, and I was just looking for relief. I'm like, Lord, please just bring relief. Lord, please just bring a sign. And the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, "I'm gonna take care of it." And I said, "Okay, Holy Spirit, thank you. I appreciate that. Thank you for taking care of it." And then I just continued to worry. I continued to stress about it. I continued to be all tense. Finally. A gentleman comes along and he writes a check for the exact amount that we needed for that project. He writes a check, he signs his name, he hands me the check. I'm holding the check in my hand and relief just floods over me. I'm like, thank God we have what we need to move forward with this project. Now we can reach more people. And the Holy Spirit spoke to me. Why do you trust in man more than you trust in me? And I realized in that moment, that this man's signature on a paper brought me more relief than the Holy Spirit's promise to my heart. And in that moment, I realized I was lacking in faith and I had to repent. And I said, Lord, forgive me. Forgive me for lacking in faith. Forgive me for requiring that you prove it before I felt relieved. His promise should relieve us. His instructions should move us. He doesn't have to show us steps 1 through 10. He just has to give us simple instructions. Stop demanding that he prove it once you know he has spoken. Finally, number 5, and this one is gonna be challenging for many. Number 5, we say, quiet down. Now you might not say that outright to the Holy Spirit, quiet down. But we say things like, tone it down, with reservation. I've even heard phrases like, well, I'm charismatic with a seatbelt. By that, they mean in some way that the Holy Spirit's power is dangerous, to which we should respond by asking, when is it ever an issue for the Holy Spirit to have full control? When is it ever an issue for the Holy Spirit's power to be fully displayed? When should we ever hesitate with the person of the Holy Spirit? Is the Holy Spirit dangerous? Is he a liability? Does he lead into chaos and harm? No way. So why then should we have any reservations when it comes to the Holy Spirit? Really, what phrases like that are implying is that the Holy Spirit needs to be babysat. The Holy Spirit needs to be monitored, that we need to maintain some control over what the Holy Spirit is doing, lest he do too much of what he wants, And again, we never say that outright, but the things we do say, the way we do behave, the hesitations and the reservations that we do allow around the ministry of the Holy Spirit reveal our hearts. And we're saying to him, tone it down, calm down, quiet down. And we're stifling the voice of the Holy Spirit. If in 1 Samuel 19:18-23, I won't read the full text here, But you have it there for your reference. We see that the Holy Spirit comes upon Saul and his men repeatedly, causing them to prophesy. What he was doing was a bit disruptive from their perspective. I'm not saying the Holy Spirit is disorderly objectively. I'm saying that sometimes what the Holy Spirit does disrupts our order or what we think is order or disrupts our preferences, or moves beyond our level of comfort. You are not always going to be comfortable with what the Holy Spirit does. That doesn't mean he's wrong for doing it. You are not always going to like what the Holy Spirit does. That doesn't mean he should stop. You are not always going to completely understand every manifestation of his power. That does not mean that it is wise to say to the Holy Spirit, tone it down. In John 3:8, we read, the wind blows, wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit. Here we see the wind-like nature of the Holy Spirit, his enigmatic, mysterious nature that sometimes eludes our explanations. And that's okay because you can't put God in a box. We say things about the power of the Holy Spirit like, well, I just don't see the fruit, or this is disorderly, or this isn't self-control. And I could go on as to why each one of those excuses really fail right up at the front. But for now, I'll simply say that many of the things that we think are clever are actually expressions of the flesh coming from the place of distrust and ego and the need to be accepted by the world. We are strange by nature. Accept it. We are not of this world. We are of a different world. We're of a heavenly kingdom. Amen. Our citizenship is elsewhere. In 1 Corinthians 2:14-15, we read this. People who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. One last portion of scripture here, Mark 5:15-16. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. This is a deliverance that Jesus performed. And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away And leave them alone. Now, there is a lot of speculation around why they were telling him to go away. Some would suggest, I would actually believe this, that it had to do with the economic effects that this had on that region. I mean, to send a whole herd of pigs off a cliff, that's not very good for business. Others would just maybe suggest that this had to do with the fact that the people were just weirded out by the whole thing. It didn't make sense. didn't seem right. Or maybe some of them were personally invested in the fact that this man was possessed by demons. We just don't know for sure. But we do understand that whatever it was, they were so uncomfortable with the power of the Holy Spirit being demonstrated. They were so uncomfortable with this marvelous work, this marvelous miracle, that they said to Jesus, go away from us. And we do this time and time and time again in our churches. Well, they're a new convert. They just got saved. Let's wait to tell them about the Holy Spirit. Wait a minute! Shouldn't they be empowered from the very get-go? Or or we have some visitors today, so let's tone it down. Not everything is for everyone. Wait a minute! Didn't we read in Acts chapter two how there was this noise that spread abroad and it Drew a crowd and 3,000 were added to that number despite the fact that they thought that the believers were drunk? Why do we do this to him? Why do we try to push the Holy Spirit into back rooms and special services? Why do we say to the Holy Spirit, quiet down, and then call that wisdom? Why do we desire to control what he does? Why are we sipping from the river when we should be jumping into the river? Why are we apologizing for the manifestation of his power? Why are we making excuses for the way that he moves? The Holy Spirit is not just for charismatics and Pentecostals. He's for the church at large. He's for you. He is not a liability. He's the only chance we have to win this world. May we embrace him in our churches, in our ministries, in our lives. May the way we live and think say, welcome, Holy Spirit. So precious Lord, I lift your people to you now, and as these areas in their hearts have been revealed I pray you would grant them repentance. Forgive us, Lord, for the way we've treated your precious Holy Spirit. Forgive us for these hidden areas in our hearts that we need to get right. Clean us up, I pray. Clean us up.
