Appearances of the Holy Spirit You Missed and How They Affect You

In this sermon, the speaker explores a series of biblical appearances and roles of the Holy Spirit, arguing that the Spirit is the initiator of new beginnings and the empowering presence in both supernatural and everyday life. Beginning with the Spirit’s hovering over the waters in Genesis, the talk moves through the dove released by Noah as a symbol of the Spirit searching for a place to land, culminating in the Spirit descending on Jesus at His baptism as the marker of a new creation. The speaker then highlights the Spirit’s work in granting dreams to Joseph, empowering the craftsman Bezalel, and providing everyday strength to families, businesses, and students, emphasizing that the Spirit equips ordinary believers for ordinary tasks. The sermon warns that the Spirit’s influence can be minimized or withdrawn through rebellion, using Samson’s loss of strength and Elijah’s encounter with God’s gentle whisper as illustrations. It stresses the importance of sensitivity to the Spirit’s quiet voice, warns against quenching the Spirit, and calls believers to surrender, allowing the “rivers of living water” to flow from within. The message concludes with a call to partnership and financial support for the ministry.
Chapters
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Holy Spirit was with them also. Check this out, Genesis 1:2. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. So here we see already, you can't even get to the 2nd verse of the Bible, without seeing the power of the Holy Spirit at work. The Holy Spirit was present at the dawn of creation, hovering above the face of the deep. Now, what's interesting is this word right here. So, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. That word hovering in the Hebrew means to brood, to incubate, to cultivate. In other words, the picture that's being painted for us Is like a bird incubating its eggs, a bird hovering over, brooding over its eggs to cause them to hatch. In other words, the Holy Spirit was involved in creation. As God spoke, the Holy Spirit hovered, incubating the Word of God and causing creation to be born. Now watch this. We of course know that after the creation of man, Man eventually rebels against God, falls into sin, loses dominion, loses fellowship with God. And then mankind as a whole becomes more and more wicked until God, looking down at the wickedness says, I have to start over. And so God sends a worldwide flood. Of course, he spares Noah and his family, and Noah and his family are the ones who are to begin civilization again, starting creation over. Now watch this though. Genesis chapter 8, beginning at verse number 6. After another 40 days, Noah opened the window he had made in the boat and released a raven. The bird flew back and forth until the floodwaters on the earth had dried up. He also released a dove to see if the water had receded and it could find dry ground. Now we know that the dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, biblically speaking. But the dove could find no place to land because the water still covered the ground. So Noah from the ark releases that first dove. The dove goes out in search, not just of dry land. He's not just searching for dry land. The dove is searching for the place that creation could begin again. The dove is searching for the place where God would cause mankind to start over. But the dove could find no place to land because the water still covered the ground. So it returned to the boat. And Noah held out his hand and drew the dove back inside. Watch this now. After waiting another 7 days, Noah released the dove again. This time, the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. So now, because dry land is beginning to appear, it was able to pick up a leaf and hold it in its beak, bring it back to Noah. Now a 3rd time, watch this. Then Noah knew that the floodwaters were almost gone. He waited another 7 days and then released the dove again. This time it did not come back. Why? Because the dove had finally found a place to land. The dove had finally uncovered the dry ground where creation would begin anew. Now, prophetically, symbolically, something else is happening here, and it's fascinating. Again, we see the dove hovering at the dawn of creation, the fall of man, the flood, the dove is released to search for a place where God could begin anew, where man could begin anew. And if you look in the Old Testament, you'll see references to doves, but never again will you see that dove landing. Never, there's no reference to it. We don't know where it went exactly. Thus the prophetic picture is painted. Because in the Old Testament, we see that the dove is released, searching for the place where God would begin again. But we never see that dove return. In fact, you can go through all the prophets, Psalms, You can read all the historical books and not once will you find the dove landing. We don't see the dove landing, prophetically speaking, until Matthew chapter 3. Watch this now. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were open and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, this is my dearly loved Son who brings me great joy. What does this mean for us today? Well, the Holy Spirit was the one who in the Old Testament, at the beginning of time, hovered over the word of God, causing all of creation to come into existence. He is the announcer of new beginnings. He is the announcer of the new creation. He is the marker of new beginnings. And so wherever the Holy Spirit lands, newness and life overflow. Wherever the Holy Spirit lands, there is a new beginning, a fresh start. So the dove that left the ark went in search where God would begin again. And in the New Testament, we see that the Holy Spirit lands on Jesus, announcing to the world, The dawning of a new creation, announcing to us today, this is where God begins again, not of necessarily a material beginning, but a spiritual one. Wherever the Holy Spirit goes, there is newness in life. Wherever the Holy Spirit goes, the past is no more and the future is yours. Wherever the Holy Spirit goes, there is hope. Wherever the Holy Spirit goes, there is refreshing. He just needs a place to land. My prayer is, Holy Spirit, may I be a place that you can land. May I be a place that you can create. May I be a place where you can cause the Word to be made manifest. The Word became flesh, that flesh, you and I, might become the Word. And he does so by the Holy Spirit. He's just looking for somewhere to land. Amen. He's looking for a yielded vessel who says, mark me, make the new creation in me. Adam 2.0, the second chance. Create the image of Jesus in me. He is the dove of new beginnings. We also see him in Genesis 41. So Pharaoh asked his officials, can we find anyone else like this man, so obviously fit with the Spirit of God. Here, this is a reference to Joseph the dreamer. God had revealed the future to him. And because God revealed the future to Joseph, Joseph was put in a position of power and people around him recognized the spirit of the dreamer. It's by the Holy Spirit that we are given divine dreams. Maybe there's something that God has placed in your heart concerning your future. Maybe there's something God has shown you, a vision, concerning your dreams, concerning the ministry that he's entrusted to you, concerning your marriage, your family, your business, your health, your finances, your emotional wellbeing. You can see it, you're dreaming about it, you're hoping for it, you're praying for it, you're persisting to get it, you have the faith to receive it. And you're saying, God, I see what you've shown me. You've placed your dream in me. You see, sometimes we dream dreams that are of the flesh. Sometimes we have hopes that are just completely selfish, if I'm being honest with you. But God places within you by His precious Holy Spirit, dreams that are of Him, dreams that are according to His will, dreams that He wants you to see. And the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of the dreamer, causes you to capture glimpses of your future in Christ. He causes you to capture glimpses of your divine destiny. And when you're going through trials, when you're feeling hopeless, when you feel like quitting, when you feel like your past is too much to overcome, when you're very aware of your shortcomings and your flaws and your character issues, the Holy Spirit keeps that dream alive. The Holy Spirit keeps it ever before your mind, because if God placed a dream within your heart, by the Holy Spirit, then by the Holy Spirit, he's going to fulfill that dream. So the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the dreamer. Exodus 31, watch this now. Then the Lord said to Moses, look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. He is a master craftsman, expert in working with gold, silver, and bronze. He is skilled in engraving and mounting gemstones and in carving wood. He is a master at every craft. So here we see that the Holy Spirit is empowering this man to create crafts. Now, what were these specific crafts? These were various different items that were to be used in the tabernacle. Remember, the tabernacle was, a copy of what was in heaven. So Moses is to build the tabernacle. And of course he sees this vision. So God gives this man excellence. God gives this man the ability to be a good craftsman. Now this struck me because as I read it, I thought, well, that's interesting because when I think of the power of the Holy Spirit, I'm thinking of the power of the Holy Spirit in terms of the prophetic. I'm thinking of the power of the Holy Spirit in terms of healing and deliverance and miracles. And very rarely do we as Christians think of the power of the Holy Spirit in terms of what we might call mundane, boring, and everyday. But this right here reveals another facet of the Holy Spirit's nature. And that is that the Holy Spirit doesn't just empower you for what we would refer to as the supernatural. The Holy Spirit also empowers you for what we would call the natural. The Holy Spirit doesn't just empower pastors and evangelists and teachers and prophets and apostles. The Holy Spirit doesn't just empower us for healing and deliverance and prophecy and tongues. The Holy Spirit empowers moms and dads, husbands and wives, parents, friends, business people, students, teachers. In terms of the natural means. The Holy Spirit doesn't just empower you for the grand, the spectacular, the divine, as we would see it. The Holy Spirit empowers you for everyday things. So if you're a mom and you're doing your best to raise those kids, and sometimes maybe you feel you lose your patience, and sometimes maybe you feel like you're being stretched so thin that you're just going to break at some point, the Holy Spirit gives you strength. If you're a dad who's working hard to provide, doing your best to set an example, wondering if you're saying or doing something that is gonna scar your kid for the rest of their lives, and you don't even know it, the Holy Spirit gives you wisdom. The Holy Spirit gives you the ability to be a good dad. If you just got married, or maybe you've been married for decades, and you're saying, I wanna be a good husband to my wife, or you're a wife, who wants to be a good wife to her husband, and you're struggling through your own selfishness, and you're struggling through your quirks, and your hangups, and your flaws, and you're just saying, I don't, I don't know quite how to do this. I don't think I have what it takes to die to myself enough to be a good spouse. The Holy Spirit comes alongside and he says, you don't have to do that by yourself. I'll be in the still small voice. I'll be in the whisper. I'll be in the daily reminders. I'll speak to your heart. I'll soften your heart. I'll focus your mind. I'll give you instructions. I'm gonna walk with you hand in hand, day by day, moment by moment. You're not doing this on your own. Maybe you feel that because of the way that your parents were with each other, maybe they had an unhealthy toxic marriage, you fear that you're gonna repeat those same flaws. But the Holy Spirit says, no, I've given you a new bloodline. I've given you a new start. You are now of a new generation, a divine offspring, a child of God. And because of that, I'm gonna empower you. No, you are not gonna make the same mistakes your parents made. You're not gonna make the same mistakes that your family made. You will be a successful spouse. You will be a successful parent. And if you're someone who, Maybe it's in business. The Holy Spirit can empower you there. Maybe you're a student, you're studying, you wanna get a passing grade. And you're saying within yourself, I'm the first one to go to college, or I'm the first one to try this kind of endeavor, or I'm the first one to try to be successful in certain avenue, in a certain avenue of life. And you're wondering how you're even gonna go about that. Maybe you've already dismissed yourself. Maybe you've already said in your heart, this just isn't for me, but the Holy Spirit is gonna give you— Come on. what you need to learn. You know how I know that? 'Cause of this right here. The Holy Spirit empowers this man for something as seemingly simplistic as being a craftsman. He was a craftsman, yet God's hand was in his craftsmanship. God's hand was in his work. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of excellence. The expert spirit. You may not think you have what it takes to do the task at hand, but the Holy Spirit has everything you need, and he's walking with you every day. In Judges 16, we see the Holy Spirit's power being removed from Samson. Samson was given supernatural strength, supernatural physical strength, Yet Samson rebelled. And not only did Samson rebel, but he hardened his heart. You can see it through his actions. He hardens his heart, and eventually he allows for an ungodly woman to pull from him the secrets of his supernatural strength. She had tried before to destroy him, and he was so focused on what he wanted. He was so rebellious, so, hard-hearted that he couldn't even see that this woman was trying to destroy him. Eventually, he gives up his secret, his hair. And so his hair was cut off. Now watch this. Samson, who had fought many times before with supernatural strength, was now surprised to find that he no longer had this supernatural strength after several rebellious actions. After persisting in disobedience, this is what some people do, sadly. They persist in disobedience, and eventually the consequences catch up to them. Watch this, Judges 16:20. Then she cried out, Samson, the Philistines have come to capture you. When he woke up, he thought, I will do as before and shake myself free. But he didn't realize the Lord had left him. Now in the New Testament and the new covenant, of course, we understand that the Holy Spirit doesn't leave the believer, but that doesn't mean that the Holy Spirit's influence can't be minimized. No, you can't lose the Holy Spirit as a true born-again believer, but you can ignore his influence. You can block his power. Yeah, he'll still be with you. Yeah, you'll still have that connection, but that doesn't mean you're making use of that connection. Many people don't even realize that they've minimized the influence of the Holy Spirit And then they try to go out and do the work as before. How many times have we seen it where preachers will do this? I'll go out and preach as before, not realizing the anointing has weakened on them. Someone, I'll go out and prophesy, not realizing the way they've been living has caught up and now that gift has been diminished. I'm not saying you can't get it back. What I am saying is that when the Holy Spirit's influence is minimized, we often miss it. This is why we have to be sensitive to the person of the Holy Spirit. Sadly, much of what we do in this life doesn't require any reliance upon the Holy Spirit. And some Christians are living lives that are so self-reliant, please hear this. Some Christians are living lives that are so self-reliant that were the Holy Spirit to remove his influence from them, they wouldn't even know it. Were the Holy Spirit to completely withdraw his presence and power, nothing would change. What's even scarier is that some in ministry, ministry, preaching, teaching, prophesying, praying for the sick, worshiping, all of that, people in ministry, many of them are self-reliant on their gifts and they wouldn't even notice if the Holy Spirit removed his approval. I heard one preacher remark and I thought it was brilliant. He said, God is the only one who will fire you and not tell you. Now I'm not preaching a message of condemnation. Of course, people can be restored. But if you're persisting in rebellion, that gentle Spirit, the Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He'll allow you to make your decisions. The Holy Spirit comes upon you like a mighty rushing wind, but his influence is decreased in the form of a whisper. His influence comes upon us loudly, The decrease of his influence is quiet. You may not even know what's happening. And this is why we have to live lives aware. I'm not saying you need to live in fear and paranoia, constantly wondering if you're diminishing the influence of the Holy Spirit. I'm specifically talking about those who are in outright rebellion and they know it. And they become so arrogant as to think that the Holy Spirit's just gonna let that continue. In 1 Kings 19:11, we begin to read, go out and stand before me on the mountain. This is Elijah now, the Lord speaking to Elijah. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, what are you doing here, Elijah? He's the still small voice. Now you look at this and you see that God wasn't in the wind. You see, if the Lord was in the wind and that wind blew, Divine wind, Elijah would have had no choice but to have been blown away. You can't stop that from happening. If God had been in the fire, Elijah would have had no choice but to have been burned or at least warmed. He couldn't have controlled that. If God was in the earthquake, Elijah would have no— he would have had no choice but to be shaken. He couldn't have stopped that either. The wind would have blown, nothing he could have done. The earth would have quaked, nothing he could have done. The fire would have burned, nothing he could have done. But the Lord came to him in the form of a still, small voice, giving him a choice of whether or not to respond to that voice. He's gentle. He comes as a whisper. Jesus said, anyone who believes in me may come and drink, for the scriptures declare rivers of living water will flow from his heart. When he said living water, he was speaking of the Spirit who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory. Now here we see something that helps us to adjust our thinking. Because many Christians, when they think about the Holy Spirit, they think about him as like a force or a mist or a power hovering somewhere out there, maybe on the ceiling during a worship service. And very rarely do people imagine the Holy Spirit as he actually is, and that is living in them. We think about the Holy Spirit as over there or up there or in that person over there or flowing through that prayer back there. But really the Holy Spirit dwells in you. And this is what causes people to understand, this revelation is what causes people to understand the power of the inner life. And this, I pray, is a revelation that we would capture again in the church today, the inner life. Out of the innermost being will flow rivers of living water. Knowing that I already have the Holy Spirit, and that as I yield to the work of the Spirit in me, I see the manifestation of his influence. There's joy within me. I just have to surrender to the Holy Spirit to tap into that joy. There's love and peace and holiness and clarity of mind already dwelling within me. I just have to yield to his work so that that might flow out of me. There's power in me. There are gifts in me and in you, if you're a born-again believer. It's not a matter of you getting more of the Holy Spirit. It's a matter of the Holy Spirit getting more of you. And he gets more of you through surrender. And you allow those rivers to flow, the inner life. And when life becomes difficult, when you face trials, when you feel like you just can't handle what's happening around you, or you wanna quit, you're saying, I'm done. I don't wanna do this anymore. I just wanna give up. Well, that's when you begin to, instead of focusing on the exterior, you begin to retreat to the inner place. The secret place, hear me now, the secret place isn't a prayer room. The secret place isn't a physical space. The secret place is a mindset. The secret place is awareness of and being sensitive to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I'm aware that he's with me. I'm sensitive and responsive to the work of the Spirit within me. That's what it means. And so we recognize that we don't have to ascend to some heavenly place, but we recognize that rather heaven is within us. The kingdom is within us, that ascension takes place inwardly. And so, And as we look inwardly through the eyes of faith, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we experience the fullness of that inner life, the divine life flowing through us. That's what it means to be in fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Out of your innermost being will flow rivers of living water. He's also the power of greater works. John 14:12. I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me, this is Jesus speaking. Really think about what he's saying here. I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me— do you believe in him? Yes. Okay. Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done and even greater works because I'm going to be with the Father. Now, I've heard some individuals try to explain this away or water it down or to pretend like it's not as significant as what Jesus meant it to be. They'll say things like, Well, we don't really know what greater works are. And we couldn't possibly do greater works than Jesus in the sense that some believe. And I get that to some degree what they're trying to say, but all the while, when they criticize that, they're forgetting that Jesus also said, you'll do the same works. So while there can be debate or questions or discussion about what these greater works are, We can at least agree, biblically speaking, on what these works are that Jesus already did. Healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out devils, prophesying, teaching, preaching, expanding the kingdom of God here in the earth. Those same works, you're gonna do them. He says it right here. You can't explain that away or water it down. You have to twist yourself into a pretzel in order to do that. And some people try to do that with the scripture. They twist the scripture like it's a pretzel, trying to make it say what they want it to say. Why? Because they're trying to explain that away Because their natural mind is offended by the supernatural grandness of what Jesus is saying here. So why, well, it might sound smart or intellectual to try to explain this away or water it down. The truth of the matter is Jesus meant what He said. And He tells us very clearly, you're gonna do the same works, period. Now, either you have the faith to believe that or you don't. But if you don't have the faith to believe that, don't try to water down the words of Jesus. Just to suit your level of comfort. But go on here now and look at John 16. Jesus says here, but in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate, that is the Holy Spirit, won't come. If I do go away, then I will send Him to you. Because I go to my Father, you can do greater works. Well, what happened when Jesus went to His Father? The Holy Spirit was poured out. Therefore, the Holy Spirit himself is the power unto greater works. The Holy Spirit is the one who loves Jesus. Romans 5:5 says, and this hope will lead not to disappointment, for we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. As the KJV words it, the love of God, is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Powerful truth. The Holy Spirit fans into flame your love for God. He fans into flame your love for Jesus. I'll put it this way. Nobody on earth loves Jesus more than the Holy Spirit loves Jesus. And if you'll surrender to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will give you that same love for Him. Amen. The Holy Spirit is that fire of first love. And as you become consumed by that fire of first love, self disintegrates in the goodness of God. So now when they look at you, they no longer see you, they see Jesus. Now when you talk, you're talking under the influence of the Holy Spirit. I want that. I want it to be like Jesus said. Jesus said, if you see me, you've seen the Father. Well, I want it to be that if they see me, they see Jesus. I wanna be a reflection of that light. I want to be completely lost. I want, as I said, self to be disintegrated in the fire of first love, losing my life in Him, losing my life in His life so that His glory could shine through me. That's what I want more than anything. Am I there? No way. But the Holy Spirit helps me day to day, moment to moment. Help me, Holy Spirit, become that. Amen. The Holy Spirit is the delicate fire. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 simply puts, do not stifle the Holy Spirit. Now that word stifle is the same Greek word that we see used in Ephesians chapter 6, where Paul writes that we ought to use the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the enemy. In other words, it's speaking of extinguishing a flame. That's what the word implies. And many of us extinguish the fire of the Holy Spirit in our lives. How do we do that? Through disobedience, through delay, through doubt, through downplaying, trying to explain away the supernatural. Listen, either you're all in or you're all out. Don't try to explain away the supernatural. It is an important part of your Christianity, the supernatural life. Doctrine is important. The word is the foundation for living. Of course, we understand the primary way that God speaks, but don't forget the supernatural elements, the manifestations of his power and presence, the things that make you scratch your head and go, hmm, I wonder about that. Miracles, signs, and wonders. Not everything is going to fit into a neat box. Not everything is gonna make you comfortable. Not everything will be accepted by others. Not everything will be understood by you completely, but that doesn't mean we reject it. Just because you don't understand what he's doing doesn't mean you should reject what he's doing. Be very careful about criticizing what you don't understand. Don't quench the fire of the Holy Spirit. He's the Spirit of revelation. Revelation 1:10-11 say this, it was the Lord's Day and I was worshiping in the Spirit. Suddenly I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast. It said, write in a book everything you see and send it to the 7 churches. So here we see that when John was worshiping in the Spirit, suddenly heaven opens before his eyes. Oh, that we would be so raptured in the presence of the Holy Spirit that we would be given powerful revelation. Lord, open our spiritual eyes. Let us walk with the Holy Spirit daily. Let us surrender to him even when it's difficult. Let us disappear in your nature. Let us become more like Jesus. Let us have friendship with the Holy Spirit as we understand him, appreciate him, love him, and obey him. Lord, in the name of Jesus, I lift that one to you now who is crying out For the depths of the Spirit. Take them deeper, I pray. Reveal yourself to them, your nature, your power, your presence, your glory. Cause them to become reflections of you. We want to know you. Help us to do it. And precious Holy Spirit, remind us of your presence with us daily. Amen. And Father, I pray also now for those who need healing. If you need a healing in your body, I want you to begin to believe right now for your miracle. In the name of Jesus, I speak God's healing power over you. And I pray that sickness and disease would lose their grip on your body right now in Jesus' name. Lord, give your people divine faith. Give them bold faith right now in Jesus' name. Amen. Receive that miracle. I rebuke that sickness, that disease in Jesus' name. And Lord, break every bondage, all addiction, all demonic torment. It has to go now. Let them sense your presence and power upon them even in this moment. Let your glory fill that room. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. I want you to say it because you believe it.
