If Nobody's told You how Powerful Your Words Are, then I Will

In this sermon, the speaker explores the nature and power of words from a biblical perspective. He begins by establishing that God's Word is both creative and sustaining, citing Genesis 1:1‑3, Hebrews 11:3, Psalm 33:6, Hebrews 1, and Hebrews 4:12 to show that God’s spoken command brought light, matter, time, and continues to hold the universe together. The speaker then demonstrates how Jesus, identified as the Word (John 1), exercised this divine power through miracles—casting out demons, calming storms, healing the sick, raising the dead, and commanding nature—illustrating that the spoken word of God produces immediate, tangible results. The sermon distinguishes this divine creative power from human speech, emphasizing that humans do not possess the ability to create reality by will alone; our words only have power when they align with God’s Word. The speaker warns against “charismatic superstition” that claims speaking something into existence can cause physical outcomes, and he clarifies that human words can influence thoughts, emotions, reputations, and spiritual condition, but they lack the creative force of God. He encourages believers to speak in faith, echoing Scripture, and to cultivate their words to shape circumstances according to kingdom standards. The message concludes with a prayer for believers to speak in alignment with God and a call for financial partnership with the ministry, directing listeners to the ministry’s website for donations.

I wanna talk to you about the power of your words. Now, there's a lot of misunderstanding around this topic. So let's take a look at what the Word of God has to say. First, let's talk about the power of God's words, because in understanding the power of His words, we then can understand the power of our words. Genesis 1:1-3. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. The Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, let there be light, and there was light. Here we can see that God's word is creative. By that, I mean that when he speaks something, there is an immediate tangible reaction. Hebrews 11:3. By faith, we understand that the entire universe was formed at God's command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen. In other words, God spoke and caused reality as we know it to come into existence. He's outside of time, outside of matter, outside of space. He's higher than time, higher than matter, higher than space. And when he spoke, time began. And when he spoke, matter became. And when he spoke, space came about. Psalm 33:6, the Lord merely spoke and the heavens were created. He breathed the word and all the stars were born. Let me read that again. I wanna just appreciate what's being said here. Really think about what's being said here. Meditate on this. The Lord merely spoke and the heavens were created. He breathed the word and all the stars were born. This is power. Something came from nothing when God spoke. God caused time to begin. Simply by saying a command, reality stood At attention. His will is so powerful that reality bends to it without question. When he speaks, he speaks with creative power. God's word is also sustaining. Go with me now to Hebrews chapter 1. I'm going to read verses 1 through 4. Long ago, God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance. And through the Son, he created the universe. The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God. And he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. I'll read that again. He sustains Everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. He caused all things, and then his word holds everything together. That breath still sustains. The breath at the beginning has not stopped. And God holds reality as we know it together with his word. His word holds you together. His word holds the laws in place, the spiritual laws, the physical laws, the moral laws held together by the foundation of his word. His word holds the universe together. Think about that. Every cell in your body, every molecule in the universe held together by the sustaining power of God's word. God's word is powerful. So God's word is creative. God's word is sustaining. God's word is powerful. Hebrews 4:12 says, For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Isaiah 55:11 declares, it is the same with my word. I send it out and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. My father used to tell me when I was a boy, your word is your bond. In other words, what you speak, you should back. And if you give your word to something, then you are giving yourself to the same. To give someone your word is to give them your commitment, to indeed insist that I will do all that I can to fulfill what I promised. So when you give your word to someone, It's a demonstration of your character on how you follow through. Think about the fact that when God gives us his word, he isn't just giving us an empty promise, for his entire person, all that he is, backs that word. His character backs that word. His power backs that word. His will backs that word. His nature backs that word. God has the power to perform what he promises. God has the power to perform what he promises. His word is potent. His word is powerful. His word is effective. And if God said it, it's as good as done. I know it may not always seem that way. Sometimes life puts us in circumstances where we begin to doubt. But no matter what you see, No matter how you feel, no matter what you think is going to happen, God will accomplish that which he promised. It is for sure. Let's read it again, Isaiah 55:11. Meditate on this, get this in your spirit. It is the same with my word. I send it out and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper Everywhere I send it. Type in the comment section, I trust His Word, because you can indeed trust His Word. God's Word supersedes all laws, as we mentioned before, outside of time. His Word accomplishes its purpose, and there's nothing that anyone can do to stop it. If God has promised you something, though people might come against you, they can't stop what God promised. Though you might develop a sickness, that sickness cannot stop what God promised. Or you might meet an obstacle, that obstacle cannot prevent or even slow what God has promised. If God promised it, it will happen as God declared it, and when he said it would come to pass. Looking in the life of Jesus, we see that this same creative power worked through him. Jesus, as we know, is the Word, and God's will and his Word are inseparable. God's will and his Word are inseparable. That's why Jesus fulfilled the will of God unto perfection. John 1:1 says, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus was the will and the Word of God in action. This is why He said, if you've seen Me, you've seen the Father. Jesus walked in the will of God. Jesus demonstrated the Word of God to such perfection that He was obedient down to the last millisecond. of his life. He was a mirror image reflecting the will of God from heaven and here upon the earth. Jesus is the Word. And with his word, he delivered the captives. Matthew 8:16. That evening, many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. Notice here, The deliverance ministry of Jesus was demonstrated with a word. In other words, He spoke it and it was so. He cast out demonic powers with a simple command. He didn't beg the demons to leave. He didn't have a back and forth conversation with them. He didn't ask them about their background, how they got in, what their favorite color was. He simply gave a simple command and the spirits had to obey. With His word, He influenced the physical world. Matthew 21, beginning at verse number 18. In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, may you never bear fruit again. And immediately the fig tree withered up. Here we see, that creative power, in the words of Jesus, as he speaks, there is this instant notable material result. He speaks and it happens in the time that he desires it to happen. Mark 4:39 and onwards say this. When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, silence, be still. Suddenly the wind stopped and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? The disciples were absolutely terrified. Who is this man? They asked each other. Even the wind and waves obey him. So nature even knew the authority of Christ responding to his word. With his word, he had authority over angelic hosts. Matthew 26:53, don't you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? With his word, he healed the sick. Luke 7:6 and onward. So Jesus went with them, but just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, Lord, don't trouble yourself by coming to my home. For I am not worthy of such an honor. I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. In other words, he's saying, I understand how the chain of authority works. I only need to say, go, and they go, or, come, and they come. And if I say to my slaves, do this, they do it. When Jesus heard this, He was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following Him, He said, I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel. And when the officer's friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. In other words, He spoke from a distance the healing virtue to flow through that slave's body, and it did. So with His word, He healed the sick. With His word, He raised the dead. Mark 5:38-42. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. He went inside and asked, why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn't dead, she's only asleep. The crowd laughed at him, but he made them all leave. And he took the girl's father and mother and his 3 disciples into the room where the girl was lying. Holding her hand, he said to her, little girl, Get up. And the girl who was 12 years old immediately stood up and walked around. They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. So looking at the life of Jesus, we see that Jesus is the Word, that Jesus delivered the captives with his word, caused miracles in the physical realm with his word, possessed authority over angelic hosts with his word, healed the sick with his word, raised the dead with his word. Jesus had power in His words. He was a direct reflection of the Father. Now, I want you to notice the difference between the way the Father and the Son used their words. And I wanna be very careful with the way I describe this dynamic here. So let me say this first, Jesus was, is, and will always be God. There was never a time, whether here upon the earth or in the heavenly realm, that Jesus was not God. From birth to crucifixion, to burial, to resurrection, to ascension, to now, Jesus was, is, and will always be God. Jesus did know He was God. Jesus now knows He is God. Jesus is God through and through, no limitations. But Jesus chose to operate in a certain position while here upon the earth. You would notice Matthew, or excuse me, John 5:19. So Jesus explained, I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by Himself. He does only what He sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. So again, Jesus most certainly was God, but He chose in humility to take on this position here upon the earth. At any point, He could have picked up the same, not that He ever lost it, but at any point, He could have exercised that same authority or demonstrated that power, but He chose to live a life in submission to the Father. Study the New Testament and you'll see this plainly. Jesus chose to submit to the Father. That's true humility, though He was God. Now, I believe that He was laying for us an example of how we ought to live. John 14:12, I tell you the truth, and this is Jesus speaking, Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I'm going to be with the Father. So Adam, through his sin, lost authority. Christ, through his sinless perfection, regained that authority. And now he has authority in heaven and on earth. He has authority over all. He has been given a name, which is above every name. And so we see that the Heavenly Father, His words are creative, they are sustaining, and they are powerful. Jesus is the Word, and Jesus delivered the captives, did miracles, had authority over angelic hosts, healed the sick, raised the dead with His Word. And He says to us, if we believe, that we can perform the same works He has. Now, 2 things I wanna explain. The first, I will explain as a repeat, and the second, I'll explain as a new dynamic introduced in this teaching. And I don't mean new as in new to the body of Christ, I mean new to this outline here. So that first point I wanna reiterate, because it's so important that we get this right. Jesus's deity should not be questioned. And no, you and I are not little gods. Amen. We are servants of God. We are children of God who can walk in obedience to God and allow him to work through our lives. Now, can God do it without us? Absolutely. Can God work in this world apart from us? Of course, he's sovereign, but in his sovereignty, he has chosen to partner with you and I. And that is a great privilege that we know as believers in Christ. Now, this second dynamic, which I think is very important, There is this misconception about the power of our words. And often the mistake goes something like this. Well, God has creative power. God the Son has creative power. And he said we can do the same works that he did. So surely we have the same creative power that he does. Not exactly. And I wanna qualify this because when we look at the life of Jesus, when we see The Heavenly Father speaking. Again, we see that immediate material result happening when and where God desires. Now, you and I don't have that ability. I'll prove it to you. I want you to speak an extra zero right now into your bank account, and then go check that bank account. You can't, by your own will, cause something to immediately materialize as you desire. Nor can, during traffic hour, You speak an extra highway lane into existence so that you can take that route instead. If you and I had that same creative power, there would be a lot of people who would be injured because in moments of rage, we would speak things out of emotion and harm one another with the power of our words physically and immediately. Now, don't hear what I'm not saying, because we have to balance this. I am not saying that your words don't have power. I'm saying the only time that your words have creative power is when they align with God's Word. 1 John 5:14, I'll prove it to you. And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, according to His will, I'll say it again, according to His will. According to His will. His will, He heareth us. So the power of our words comes from the power of His Word. Only when we repeat what God says do our words have power. We can't by our own will, we can't by our own power, we can't wholly separate from God speak things into existence with that same creative force. Now, our words still have influence that we do have will over, But we'll get into that in just a moment. For now, I wanna bring balance to this so that we avoid superstition. How many times have you maybe felt a little sick and you say out loud, oh, you know, I think I'm coming down with a cold, or I think I'm catching that bug that's going around. And you may have encountered somebody say, don't speak that into existence. Don't speak that over yourself. Don't receive that by your words. Well, that is a form of what we would call charismatic superstition. Now, to be clear, this is coming from someone who believes in the power of prayer. I believe there is power when we repeat the Word of God. I believe that we can demonstrate miracle-working power as we submit our lives to God. But this is not the same as saying that we have the same creative power as God. I remember one time I was praying over people in a prayer line. And as I was going down this prayer line, I was asking the various individuals what they were dealing with and what they needed God to do for them. And I came upon one woman who told me that she needed healing in her eye. And I asked her, well, what's wrong with your eye? She said, nothing is wrong with my eye. And so I thought maybe I misheard her. So I asked again, okay, well, what do you wanna pray for? She says, I need healing. I said, okay, what do you need healing for? She says, I need healing in my eye. I said, what's wrong with your eye? She said, nothing. is wrong with my eye. And it went on like this for several minutes until finally I had to explain to her, ma'am, the very fact that you're up here believing for healing is an admission that you're sick. You see, she was under this idea, she was under this misconception that to speak what she was feeling or to describe the reality that she was in was somehow giving power to it. Now, I know in the New Age, That's what they believe. I know in paganism, that's what they believe, but we have to be careful about what we allow into our doctrines, especially when those beliefs aren't founded upon Scripture. So you never heard, for example, Paul tell Timothy about his stomach issue, don't speak that, Timothy, you mustn't discuss your stomach issue. No, what did he tell him? He said, a little wine for the stomach's sake, that'll do you some good. So we have to balance this, and again, I am not saying that our words don't have power. I wanna repeat that again, because there will always be those who hear what I'm not saying. I am not saying our words don't have power. I'm saying our words on their own do not have creative power. Only God has creative power. Only God's Word has creative power. So when we repeat what God has said, then and only then is there that creative power which has that immediate tangible result or that divinely timed tangible result, because sometimes God may speak something, but have a different timing in mind than do we. So our words do not create, they cultivate. Our words do not start, they shape. God has given to us the raw materials of creation. God has given to us influence. God has given to us intellect. And we are to shape this world according to kingdom standards. We are to cultivate the earth. and bring forth the dominion of God within the earth. So the power comes not when we speak whatever we will on our own, but when we speak as God has spoken. Now we read, go with me please, Proverbs 18:21. You'll hear this. The tongue can bring life or death. Those who love to talk will reap the consequences. Well, here, The book of Proverbs is describing the general influence of words. And if you look at the New Living Translation, it says it this way, those who love to talk will reap the consequences. In other words, people with big mouths are gonna reap consequences for constantly spreading gossip and slander or saying foolish things. But I think even under that, we can see a very basic principle that words have power. I mean, you read the book of James, And the book of James very clearly describes the power of the tongue. But this destruction comes about as a result of the things that we're communicating, not necessarily because we're communicating with what we would call creative power. For example, if you constantly insult someone, the destructive power that is brought about is the lowering of their self-esteem or the rise in their insecurity. If you're constantly lying to someone, then the power there is going to cause people to not trust you. You're going to damage your reputation with the negative power of those words. If you're constantly speaking negatively, it can affect your life, of course, because what you're doing is you're speaking aloud those things that contradict the Word of God. And as you speak aloud those things that contradict the Word of God, you begin to hear what you're saying. And you program like a computer, your own mind to think and operate under the power and the pattern of those words. And now you're thinking according to human reasoning, according to negativity, according to deception, rather than according to the Word of God. So if you're constantly speaking things to yourself like, oh, nothing ever works out for me, or God has abandoned me, or I have nothing to offer, or, on and on and on with the way we insult ourselves, the way we complain about our lives, the way we complain about God, the way we contradict the Word, those words begin to shape the way you think. And the way you think changes the way you feel and act. And the way you feel and act becomes a lifestyle. And that is what we describe as a spiritual bondage. So it's not that if you speak that you're getting a cold, that suddenly by those words, you're going to bring a cold on yourself. It's that when you're constantly being negative, it changes the way you think and therefore the way you live. Matthew 21:21 says, I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don't doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, may you be lifted up and thrown into the sea, and it will happen. Well, what is Jesus describing here? Faith. He's not saying exercised by your own will. What is that faith in? That faith is in God, that faith is in his power, that faith is in his word. Mark 11:24, therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours. Again, we see this dependence upon God, not on self, not on my own will, not on my own desires. Rather, instead, I'm depending upon God's desires, I'm depending upon God's word, I'm depending upon him and what he has spoken. So yes, your words have power. It can change the way you think, it can change the way you feel, it can affect your reputation, it can help heal or hurt someone. There are many different things that our words can bring about in our lives, but we have to make sure that we're not going all the way to the unbiblical extreme to where we think that when something is spoken, that we are therefore bringing it into the physical realm by our own will. So on your own, there is power in your words, but not creative power. With God, when you speak God's Word according to God's will, with faith in God's power, then and only then do we speak with creative power. When we echo the voice of God, that's when there's creative power. When we speak on our own, We merely have cultivating power. So remember, words can change your thinking, words can change the way you feel, and therefore by that power, words can change your circumstance. So make sure you are speaking words in alignment with God's. Father, I pray you would help your people to live in this reality of your word. Let us speak words that are reflective of yours. Father, help us speak according to your nature, according to your desires. May we be aligned to you that we might speak with your power. And Lord, help us to be humble and remember that apart from you we can do nothing. We thank you for your word, Father. Help us to live it. Help us to speak it. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray.
