The Holy Spirit convicts believers by revealing God's standard and nudging them toward righteousness. Before God promotes someone to a new role, He first purifies them: Isaiah was cleansed before receiving prophetic vision, and Moses encountered God's holiness before being commissioned to deliver Israel.

So the Holy Spirit shows you God's holy standard, righteousness, and he calls you upward toward that. That is the conviction of the Holy Spirit. You sense this inner nudging from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, especially if you're resistant, it's almost like a sorrow. Don't grieve the Holy Spirit, the scripture says, that you begin to feel this holy ache in your heart where he's not just convicting you about the path that you should take. Watch this now. This is important. He's convicting you about certain things that you need to correct in yourself. Because before God can give you the instruction, before God can take you to the next place, he must purify you. Every level of instruction comes with a measure of purification. Think of Isaiah. He sees the Lord. He's about to receive the prophetic word. He's cleansed. Moses has a holy encounter in the presence of God before he receives an instruction to be a deliverer to the people of Israel. And so there's this season of preparation. That instruction comes with purification.
