This Eye-Opening Sermon Reveals the Nature of God

A sermon on God's "I Am" statements, from Moses in Exodus to Jesus in John's Gospel. Each declaration—Light of the World, Bread of Life, Good Shepherd, among others—reveals God's eternal nature and role as source of truth, sustenance, and protection. The speaker connects these to practical faith and daily reliance on Christ.

Revelation of God's nature is what will ultimately change your nature. When you learn this aspect of God's nature, that He is truly the All in All, that He is the Great I Am, your faith will become unshakable. God revealed Himself to Moses as the I Am. In Exodus chapter 3, beginning at verse number 10, we read: Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh, You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt. But Moses protested to God, who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt? God answered, I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain. But Moses protested, if I go to the people of Israel and tell them the God of your ancestors has sent me to you, they will ask, what is his name? And what should I tell them? God replied to Moses, I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you. God also said to Moses, say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my eternal name. My name to remember for all generations. Moses was concerned about his own inadequacies. He was concerned that perhaps God had picked the wrong person. Who would listen to Moses? The people of Israel, he thought, wouldn't respond to his leadership, wouldn't respond to his instruction. So he asked the Lord, Lord, when I go to your people, who do I say has sent me? And God tells him, tell them that I am. What does this mean? Well, that name I Am has so much to it. It speaks to the fact that God is the all in all. God is self-existent. He needs nothing outside of himself to be God. There is no greater power. There is no missing resource. There is no angle that his wisdom did not see. God is God all by himself. Amen. God is eternal. He has no beginning, no end. He holds time in his hands. Think about that, that God himself is not bound by time. You and I have many limitations because of time. When you make a mistake, you're filled with regret. You wish you could go back and change it, but you can't because you're within time. When you're fearful about your future, you wish that you could just skip ahead to see if you've met all your goals. You don't know what the future holds. 'Cause you're bound by time. You can't escape this moment of the present. But God, he is the I Am. He is not within time. He created time. Therefore, he's not bound by the mistakes of your past. He's not worried about what's in your future. He is the ever-present help in time of need. God sees the beginning all the way to the end as one would see a single image or a picture. God is eternal. God is unchanging. If he was faithful to Moses, he'll be faithful to you. God is a certainty. God is a foundation. God is a refuge and a reference point, meaning that if God promises something, you can bet that he'll keep that promise. When God declares something as true, nothing can make it not so. God is reliable. God is a promise keeper. God is bound to his word. Now, Jesus said something very interesting. Go now to John chapter 8. Actually, everything Jesus said was interesting, but for the purposes of this message, we'll read beginning at verse number 53. Are you greater than our father Abraham? The religious leaders are now questioning Jesus. He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are? Jesus answered, if I want glory for myself, it doesn't count, but it is my Father who will glorify me. You say he is our God, but you don't even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you are. But I do know him and obey him. Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad. The people said, you aren't even 50 years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham? Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, Before Abraham was even born, I am. At that point, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden from them and left the temple. Now, Jesus is not just claiming here to be ancient, he's claiming divinity. He is tying himself with that title by which God revealed himself to Moses, I am. And it was so shocking, by the way, that Jesus here was accused of blasphemy. Now, when you understand that he is the all in all, when you understand that God is the I Am, this makes your faith unshakable in the one true God. Jesus said several other things in regards to the phrase I Am. He said, I am the light of the world. In John chapter 8, verse number 12, we read this. Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness because you will have the light that leads to life. So Jesus is beginning now, as we go through the Scripture, you'll see that he makes various different statements. I am, I am, I am. But I want you to think about the phrasing of that, I am. God never said, I will be, or, I was. If he said, I will be, then we would forever be stuck perpetually waiting for him to do something because whoever he is is eternal. And if he was forever a will be, then we would forever be waiting. God did not say, I was. His power is not limited to just back then. Rather, he says, I am. When is faith? Now faith. God is present. When is he present? He's present now to help you, to empower you. That phrase, I am, speaks to eternity itself where God forever is all that we will ever need. And Jesus says, I am the light of the world. Amen. He doesn't just show truth, he is truth. And not only is he truth, but by him we see all truth. Without Jesus, we live in deception. Without him, we, we, we have no light. Think of how light reveals, and that's Jesus uncovering those things that are lies in our life. Think of how light brings forth color. Think of how light brings forth clarity. With the light of the world in our lives, we see deception for what it is, and we don't just survive, we thrive, living a life filled with clarity and color. He adds detail. He dissolves the darkness of sin and shame and fear and doubt. Darkness cannot overcome him. He is light itself. No amount of evil, no amount of doubt, No amount of confusion can snuff out that light. That light combats the deception. That light combats the doubt. That light combats the confusion. And by him we see all things, for he is the light of the world. When you see him for who he is as the light of the world, you become grounded in truth, secure, confident, and full of discernment. And boy, do we need discernment in this hour. Jesus also said, I am the bread of life. In John 6:35, we read, Jesus replied, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be thirsty again, or never be hungry again, excuse me. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. The bread of life is not just a want, he is a necessity. And bread is daily. We need him on a day-by-day basis. He is our sustenance. He is our strength. He is the key to longevity. He is the sustainer of our spirit. Without the bread of life, your spirit begins to wither. If you're not feeding on the presence of Jesus daily, you'll notice that your Christianity begins to lose its edge, that you begin to change and conform to the world and go back to your old habits. You begin to lose the strength to resist temptation. But oh, as you feed upon that presence, as you eat of the bread of life, you become satisfied in the presence of Jesus. He gives to us that spiritual endurance nothing in this world can satisfy. If you're like me, then you would say to the Lord, Lord, you can take anything, everything, and anyone. Everyone, but don't take from me your presence, for it is the presence of the Holy Spirit that satisfies. Only the presence of the Holy Spirit can satisfy the deepest longing of the human soul. Jesus is that bread. No earthly pleasure can fill that void. There is no replicating what that presence does in our life. There is no duplicate, there is no counterfeit, there is no alternative. Simply put, you need that daily bread, the presence of Jesus, to feast of his presence daily. That is to be strong spiritually. That is what gives you spiritual endurance, by the way. How many times have you seen a brother or sister in Christ begin their race with great enthusiasm only to later watch them fall away? as they go back into the things of the world, back into their habits, back into their own mindsets, and maybe not even fully back into the world. They just seem to lose something in their walk with God. I'll tell you what that is. They're not eating of the Bread of Life. They're not daily spending time in the presence of Jesus. When you know him as the Bread of Life, you experience longevity and strength as a Christian. Now, the next I am phrase I'm going to read involves the Lord's stern side. The Lord can be stern. He can be confrontational. And we're gonna address that in just a moment. And I believe it's going to bring correction to our lives. But first, let me encourage you. So, If you want to know more about the Holy Spirit, that's a resource I know you'll appreciate. Now, onto this I am phrase that highlights the more stern side of the Lord, and I pray it does bring correction to us. Jesus said, I am the Good Shepherd. This was a phrase that the Lord gave to us to reveal a few aspects of his nature. Go with me now to John 10. I'm gonna read beginning at verse number 11. I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don't belong to him and he isn't their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. The hired hand runs away because he's working only for the money and doesn't really care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep and they know me. Just as my Father knows me and I know the Father, so I sacrifice my life for the sheep. Listen here, he says, I know my own sheep. In other words, he knows you. He knows everything about you. He knows your goals. He knows your flaws. He knows your secrets. He knows your nature. He knows your motives. He knows the things you tell yourself when no one else is listening. He's the Good Shepherd. What do shepherds do? They protect. A good shepherd doesn't just watch over the sheep. He lays down his life for them. He doesn't protect them from a distance. This implies that there is a close personal investment that Jesus has in you. He's protective of you. So he's not gonna let things into your life that are ultimately going to bring harm. Now, sure, you're free to make your own decisions, even if those decisions are sometimes foolish or if they're sinful even. The Lord will correct those, but the Lord is also protecting. He's watching. He's looking at the people coming into your life. He's looking at the teachings you're allowing yourself to consume. He's looking at how you're taking care of your physical body. He's looking at how you're taking care of your mind, and he's protecting you, and he's invested in you, and you are a treasure to him. When I think of the Good Shepherd protecting us, I think of how I am with my daughters, Aria and Lillian. They're my treasures, my precious ones. Jessa and I both feel the same way, and we're very protective of our children. They can't go and do everything they want to do. They can't be involved in everything they want to be involved. They can't watch everything they wanna watch. They can't download everything they wanna download. There's protection. They're our treasure. They're our cherished ones. And that's how the Lord feels about you. You might feel sometimes like maybe you're missing out on some things. You'd be frustrated because you're looking at maybe even people of the world And they seem to be enjoying things more than you are, but the Lord is protecting you. He corrects you not to harm you, but to bring you to safety. So the shepherd protects and the shepherd corrects. This is his stern side. Listen, you're getting in some things that'll harm you. The Lord is going to bring correction. Maybe he's doing that in this season of your life right now. You're allowing compromise in an area of your life or even in your heart. The Lord's gonna confront that. And that's not always gonna be comfortable. That's not always going to feel good, but the Lord doesn't just do for us that which feels good. The Lord always does for us that which results in good. So he is going to confront you on your wrongdoing. Maybe you're watching this or listening to this right now and you feel shame for a certain action. Maybe you just made a mistake. The Lord, yes, has confronted that. It's partly why you feel such deep conviction about it. But the Lord corrects you to restore you. The Lord corrects you to bring you back into the sheepfold. The Lord uses his rod not just to bring punishment for punishment's sake, but sometimes that pain is simply to get you back where you need to be, away from the danger. So he does correct you. Yes, he's loving. Yes, he's kind. Yes, he's gracious. Yes, he's patient. But he's also going to correct you. And that may be what the Lord is doing at this point in your life. He guides you through his word and through his Spirit. His voice calls unto you, the voice of the shepherd. And when you understand him as shepherd, you're kept safely in God's will, safe from deception and spiritual destruction. The Lord is protective over you. Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. In John chapter 11, verse 25, we read, Jesus told her, I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live even after dying. He doesn't just give life, he is life. He is life itself. The resurrection is not just an event, it's a person. He brings to life that which was dead. Maybe God gave to you a dream, something you see within your mind and heart that you know you are to accomplish. Maybe it's in regards to a ministry that God gave to you, a business that God gave to you. Maybe in your family there are certain dreams that God has placed in your heart in regards to your marriage, in regards to your children, maybe even in regards to your health, and everything seems to be falling apart. He's gonna resurrect those dreams. He's gonna resurrect those dreams. especially if they're God-given, especially if they're according to his will. He brings life to purpose. He brings life to hope. Where there seemed to be hopelessness, he can bring hope. There is no situation that's too far gone. That's the thing that we learn about the resurrection. You see, after someone died, it was thought, at least before the resurrection of Jesus, that was it. There was no power over it. It was final. But with Christ, not even death is final. There is hope. And when you live in the hope of the resurrection and the life, you live in power, knowing that even death has been overcome. Jesus also said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. In John chapter 14, verse 6, we read, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Jesus is the exclusive way to the Father God. Now, this may sound bigoted, this may sound narrow-minded, and I think we should respond when someone calls us narrow-minded, yes, I am narrow-minded because Jesus said narrow is the way. This doesn't mean we're mean or we're cruel or even that we're rude. This just means that we acknowledge that there is only one way to the Father. Jesus is the way. He's not a way, He's not an option, He's not just a path of spirituality, He's not just one of the means by which we connect to God. Jesus is the only path of true spirituality. Jesus is the only means by which we connect with God. Jesus is the only way to heaven, and Jesus is the truth and the life. All others are liars and thieves. He is the exclusive way. No other path leads to salvation. He is the full truth. No deception can stand against him. He is the giver of life. Without him, There is only spiritual death. When you see Jesus as he truly is, the way, the truth, and the life, you live in confidence knowing that you are on the right path. Jesus said, I am the true vine. In John chapter 15, beginning at verse number 1, we read, I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit. And he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine. You are the branches. Those who remain in me and I in them will produce much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Jesus is that source of growth. By him we flourish and yield fruit. He makes you a productive Christian. Think of all that we do for the Lord. Think of all those times that you've grown tired and weary in ministry. You've grown tired or weary in just being a good Christian, and sometimes maybe You feel like giving up, like you don't have what it takes to become all that God called you to be or do all that God called you to do. Yeah, that's a frustrating place indeed. And many Christians in response to this instead will reach for religion and in their own strength attempt to meet all the requirements that God has for us and meet all the expectations that the Word places on Christians. This can feel like a burden if you're not attached to the vine. This can feel like it's all in your strength, like you're just barely hanging on if you're not attached to the vine. But when you attach to the vine, you have life and life more abundantly. When you attach to the vine, you begin to flourish in all that you do. The Lord gives to us the fruit of the Spirit. The Lord causes us to flourish and to be more like him. The Lord gives to us fruitfulness, fruitfulness in ministry. Causing us to do according to his will, affecting the world and changing lives. There's no lasting impact without Christ, none whatsoever. You and I cannot make a difference for eternity without Christ. Sure, we may be able to make some difference here in the earth on our own. Without Christ, we can't impact eternity. Amen. Only with Christ can we affect someone's eternity. So He causes us to be fruitful, not just in character, but also in ministry. These are not just statements, these are spiritual realities. You need clarity, He is the light. If you're feeling spiritually weak, He is the bread. If you're facing uncertainty, He is the way. If you're struggling with sin, he is the Good Shepherd. If you're facing loss or death, he is the resurrection. If you're seeking fruitfulness, he is the true vine. So Father, I pray that you would help your people to receive this revelation today and be transformed by it. Teach us, Lord, to remember these aspects of your beautiful nature. Teach us to look to you, the Great I Am, as our only source. Help us to see that truly you are the all in all and cause us to have unshakable faith in your nature and your character. We honor and we bless you, Lord. We declare you are the all in all. Amen. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. And I want you to type it in the comment section if you agree. Type a big amen. Now, I want you to be a part of something. I want you to get involved with helping this ministry.
