Top 3 Threats to Your Prayer Life and How to Overcome Them

In this teaching, Jeremiah Tipton outlines the three primary obstacles that hinder a believer’s prayer life—doubt, distraction, and disobedience—and offers biblical solutions for each. He begins by explaining how the flesh opposes the Spirit (Galatians 5:17) and how ego‑driven thinking fuels doubt. Using James 1:6 and Hebrews, he urges believers to approach God with bold, Christ‑centered confidence, rejecting performance‑based mindsets. He then describes distraction as the flesh’s pull toward worldly concerns (Romans 8) and prescribes practical discipline: setting a private, distraction‑free environment, cultivating stillness through worship and Scripture, and obeying the Spirit’s desire to pray. Finally, he identifies disobedience as a sin that clutters the heart and blocks prayer (Psalm 66), calling for honest self‑assessment, confession, repentance, and renunciation. Throughout, he intersperses pastoral prayer, encouragement, and a fundraising appeal for his ministry. The overall message is that believers can restore a vibrant prayer life by choosing faith over doubt, eliminating external and internal distractions, and living in obedience to God.

So I wanted to jump on here and share with you the top 3 threats to your prayer life and how to overcome them. Now, disclaimer, I am on the road, so there may be some distracting ambience every once in a while. And no, I'm not driving. Ruben Vargas is driving. Let's get right into the Word. So the scripture says in Galatians chapter 5, verse 17, for the flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh. And these are contrary one to the other, So that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Ultimately, when it comes down to what prevents you from progressing in your prayer life, it's ultimately going to be your flesh. Yes, the enemy will distract you. Yes, the enemy will tempt you. Yes, the enemy will lie to you. But really, even when the enemy attacks you with deception, his goal is for his lies to take root in your mind and become a part of your fleshly thinking, your thought patterns. So ultimately, the number one distraction to prayer are going to come from ego and self and the flesh. And so I want you to consider this. Notice that when you're in a worship service, you can worship for 45 minutes. When you're serving in a ministry, you can serve all day, even to the point of exhaustion in some instances. When you're reading the Word, very often you find that there's, there's intellectual fulfillment. And indeed, in the Word there is intellectual fulfillment, but of course we understand it's a spiritual A book that we're reading, but notice that the moment you go to pray, your flesh begins to squirm. The moment that you go to pray, suddenly now your flesh begins to fight you, and you feel this angst. You feel this craving for distraction, and your mind begins to wander. Maybe your body begins to tense, and it's like trying to subject an enemy. And really, that's what you're doing: you are subjecting the flesh. And so what begins to happen in the flesh is certain dynamic. dynamics begin to develop. Number one, and I'm going over the top 3 threats to your prayer life. Number one is doubt. James chapter 1, verse 6 says, But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. So when you go before the Lord, you need to approach with faith. Think of the Lord's Jesus taught us how to pray, and he modeled for us a certain type of prayer that we ought to pray. And it begins with, Our Father who art in heaven. Notice that it begins in faith, because in order to approach God, you have to first believe that he is. You have to first be confident that he hears you, that he accepts you. Now, many believers approach with hesitation or with shame or with, as I'm talking about now, doubt. And really, Shame and hesitation are manifestations of doubt, doubt rooted in maybe lies that you believe about yourself or that you believe about God. But ultimately, doubt causes you to approach God wondering if he's going to accept you. Doubt causes you to approach God wondering if he's going to hear you, wondering if he's going to fulfill his promises. And when you approach God with that hesitation, there's less room for faith. When we approach the Lord, we should approach him with a confident boldness, knowing that because of the sacrifice made by Christ upon the cross, that we can approach God with boldness. We don't approach God because of any perfection that we have. We're not perfect. We can approach God based on Christ's perfection. Confidence is not in our performance. Our confidence is in Christ's perfection. And so when we approach him, we come with faith. When we approach him, we approach him as children would a parent. Now, The sad reality is that you might be watching this right now and you might be saying to yourself, well, I never had a loving father. I never had a loving mother. And in fact, it's true that if you did not have loving parents, that sometimes it's difficult to imagine what a loving God might be like. And maybe you do equate God with your abusive father or your distant mother. Maybe you do equate God with the parents who weren't really there for you like they should have been. And that is a lie of the enemy that begins to produce doubt, because now you're approaching God with a performance-based mindset, thinking that his acceptance depends upon how well you did that week, or how much you prayed, or how much you read the Bible. Now, you should do those things, of course. We all ought to commit to the basic practices of spiritual devotion. But when you approach the Lord, understand that you're not approaching him because of your record. You're approaching him because of Christ's record. And because of that, you can approach boldly. The scripture tells us in Hebrews to come boldly before the throne of grace. Why? Because we have a high priest, because Christ has made the sacrifice once for all time. You ought to approach the Lord with boldness. You ought to approach the throne with boldness. To approach the Lord in any other posture Is an insult to grace. Please hear me now. To approach the Lord in any other posture than boldness is an insult to grace because any other posture indicates that you believe that it depends upon you. So when you approach the Lord, yes, there may be some doubt there, but you got— you ought to be like the man who took his son to Jesus. Remember the man whose son was demon possessed and the disciples could not cast the demon out? What did he say? He said, Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief. Imagine how much heartache you could save yourself if instead of begging God to hear you, you simply believe that he already did. When you go before the Lord, don't beg, don't plead, don't negotiate with God. It's not necessary. You already have his attention. You already have his love. You already have his acceptance. So when you approach God, approach him in faith. The, the first threat to your prayer life that we're covering here is doubt. And the way you overcome that is bold, confident faith. Choose to believe the truth rather than your feelings. Number 2 is distraction. In Romans chapter 8, verses 5 through 8, we read, for they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh. But they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. So the fleshly mind Minds the things of the world, minds the things that are carnal, minds things that are sinful. The spiritual mind is looking for spiritual things. So when you go to pray, you'll notice this tug of war. You'll notice this ebb and flow. You'll notice this, this abounding of distraction to where when you go to seek the Lord and put your mind on him, suddenly now things of the world begin to pull for you. Suddenly now you're worried about the bills. You're worried about the relationship. You're worried about ministry's effectiveness. You're worried about even maybe whether or not you're accepted by God, which has a lot to do with doubt and faith, or the dynamic anyway. And so when you approach the Lord, you're going to notice that there are things that are trying to pull you into the world, and there are things that are trying to pull you to the things of God. That's the Holy Spirit. He's given to you a royal invitation. This— you would not desire to pray the Holy Spirit within you. Therefore, the desire to pray is itself an invitation to prayer. And so that means the Holy Spirit has summoned you already. Psalm 80:18, quicken us and we'll call unto thee. Well, he has to quicken you first. How does he quicken you? It's by the Holy Spirit. So then every time you go before the Lord, it's because the Holy Spirit drew you there. I'm not saying that you can't go to the Lord whenever you want. Of course you can go to the Lord whenever you want. I'm saying that every time you do want, it's because the Holy Spirit put that want there. He gave you the desire to pray. And so now you have to implement discipline. The Holy Spirit will give you the desire. You must implement discipline. Discipline continues where feelings fail. You're not always going to feel in your emotions like praying. You're not always going to have the physical energy to pray. You're not always going to have the mental capacity to pray, but the Holy Spirit deep within your spirit has given you a spiritual desire to pray. And therefore, you have to choose to act upon the desire that the Holy Spirit gave you. When the flesh says no, say yes. Remember what Jesus told the disciples when they fell asleep, fell asleep in the garden when he wanted them to stay up and pray with him? He said, "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." That means that even though the spirit has desires, it's difficult sometimes to carry out those desires because this this carnal nature is weak. This carnal nature doesn't mind the things of the spirit. This carnal nature doesn't always want what God wants. And so you have to learn to say yes to the Holy Spirit and no to the flesh. How do you do that? Well. It begins with silence and stillness. It begins with removing distraction. Remember in Matthew chapter 6, I believe verse 6, where Jesus told them, when you pray, go away privately, lock yourself away, remove the distractions. Well, you're going to have to set aside times in the day. You're going to have to choose moments where you say no to the things of the world, where you say, I'm going to turn off the phone. I'm going to set aside all responsibilities. I'm going to tell my loved ones I can't be reached, even if just for a 15, 20 minutes, even if just for an hour, you say, this is the time I'm devoting to prayer. That's the removal of distraction, and that is an act of discipline. And then there's the stillness of the soul. You remove outer distraction by removing distraction. That's very easy. But how do you remove that inner distraction? Well, you remove the inner distraction through the stillness of the soul. How do you still the soul? You focus on the Word. And you worship. You do those two things: read the word, focus on the word, and worship. And you're going to find that the soul begins to become still. Why? Because the Lord declares, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee." So that's what the Lord tells us through his word, through the scripture. So we know that that we we we focus on Jesus, and that produces in us this stillness. That produces in us this inner calm where suddenly now the things of the world begin. To fade into the background, and now we're totally centered upon Jesus. So that's the removal of distraction. So number 1, remove doubt. How do you remove doubt? You choose to believe what the word says. You choose to believe the truth. Number 2, you remove distraction. How do you remove distraction? You remove outer distraction by setting the atmosphere, locking yourself away, going away Privately. And you remove inner distraction through the stillness of the soul, that is through worship and the word. So the number 3, the 3 threats to your prayer life: doubt, distraction. And before I give you number 3, if you're enjoying this teaching and you think others need to hear it, make sure to leave a like on the stream right now. And also, I want you to stay connected with me so that you can continue to receive these teachings. Number 3, and this I pray the Holy Spirit really ministers to you here, not that he wasn't doing so with his other points, but I think we need to be a little more— I think we need to be a little bit more honest in terms of our self-assessment when it comes to number 3. Number 3 is disobedience. Here's what it says in Psalm 66. I'll read verses 17 through 19. For I cried to help— excuse me, for I cried out to him for help. Praising him as I spoke. If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen. He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love for me. So here we see that the psalmist writes that had I not, had I, had I not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. Now we have to filter this through the New Testament realities. We We understand that the Lord hears his children. We understand that the Lord responds to our needs. We understand that we're saved by grace through faith, not by our own works. So, but filtering this truth, this biblical truth that sin hinders prayer through the New Testament lens, we come to this basic conclusion: disobedience disrupts your prayer life. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that God stops speaking. But it does mean that you stop obeying. This doesn't mean that God stops loving you. This does mean that when you walk in sin, it's more difficult for you to believe that God does love you. And so it's not that God removes from us his love or his acceptance. It's that it's harder for us to receive of that love and acceptance because of the sin in our lives. And it begins to affect the mind negatively, begins to affect the emotions negatively. It begins to cause us to think according to the patterns of the world, according to the patterns of the flesh, and we forget who we are in him so that it comes to the point where we don't even think that we can approach him. We don't even think that we can pray. We don't even think that he wants to hear from us. Well, all that comes from disobedience. And so sin clutters the soul. Sin clutters the mind. Sin makes it difficult to believe in your connection with your loving Heavenly Father. And so disobedience destroys your prayer life. So if you're struggling in your prayer life, ask yourself, is there any compromise in your life? Now I want you to consider this. Do you know that some Christians avoid prayer because they know what God has already spoken to them and they just don't want to keep hearing it? You know that some Christians avoid prayer Because deep within their hearts, they understand what God is requiring of them. They understand where they're compromised. They understand where they're not obeying. But they don't want to go to the place of prayer. They don't want to meet God in the secret place because they know there in the secret place, they're going to be confronted on their compromise. Is that you? Am I talking to you? Am I talking about your situation? Where, where you're not yielding to the Lord. And so you avoid prayer because you know what he's going to confront in you, and you're not ready to give that up, or you don't think you're ready to give that up. You need to be honest, and you need to ask the Holy Spirit to give you a true assessment. And you have to be honest. You have to be honest with yourself, and you have to admit those areas of compromise and allow for the Lord to bring correction. So The three threats to your prayer life, the top three threats to your prayer life and how to overcome them. Number one, doubt, and you overcome doubt through choosing to believe the truth and approaching the throne with boldness. Number two, distraction. The flesh wars against the spirit, and their desires are contrary to one another. How do you remove distraction? Well, you go to a secret place. That is, you set the atmosphere and. You bring stillness to the soul through worship and the Word. So you get rid of outer distraction through atmosphere, that is, lock yourself away, have a private moment, and then you get rid of that inner distraction through the stillness of the soul, through worship and the Word. And number 3, disobedience. That's gonna hinder your prayer life because that's gonna hinder your faith. That's gonna hinder your confidence. That's gonna hinder your ability to hear God because it develops a stubbornness in your heart. And that's really simple. You have to confess. You have to get it right. You have to repent and then you have to renounce. That is, change your mind about your wrongdoing and then turn from it. May the Lord help us do it. Father, I pray you would reveal areas to your people where they are allowing these destructive habits to destroy their prayer life. And I pray, precious Holy Spirit, that you would help them to be honest with themselves before you. Give them the grace Give them the discernment and empower them to become people of prayer. Light the fire of their prayer life again. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. And Lord, bring healing and deliverance and breakthrough to those who need it by your power, as only you can.
