Jeremiah Tipton argues that discernment is not criticism or skepticism, but a spiritual ability to see beyond the surface and tell what comes from the spirit, soul, or satanic. Many people misuse the term to justify judgment and distrust.

Discernment is not the gift of criticism. Isn't that interesting that that's what we think discernment is? I remember I was watching a friend of mine and I think it was a livestream and somebody posted, you have to use discernment with this guy. And I thought that was interesting because I asked myself, I thought we had to use discernment with everyone. Because when they talked about discernment, what they really meant was criticism. You have to be critical of this guy is what they meant. So it's not being judgmental, suspicious, or negative. That's not the same as being prophetic. Some people say I'm prophetic. And what they mean is they don't trust anyone. Or I'm prophetic, and what they mean is they're very critical. Or I'm prophetic, and what they mean is they're very hard to please. That's not the same thing as discernment. It's not the gift of criticism. It's what you carry in the spirit that helps you to see past the surface, and not just see past the surface, but also the ability to delineate between what is of the spirit, what is of the soul, and what is of the satanic.
