What Happens When You Surrender to Holy Spirit Daily

A sermon on practicing daily surrender to the Holy Spirit as a path to transformation. The speaker uses Enoch's walk with God as a model and explains how surrender develops Christ-like character, activates spiritual gifts like healing and boldness, and increases sensitivity to God's guidance through prayer and Scripture study.

There's a way that you can live that will change you so profoundly that those closest to you won't even recognize you. In fact, you won't even recognize yourself. I want to talk to you about dying daily. Paul wrote that he died daily. I want to talk to you about daily surrendering to the Holy Spirit. In Genesis chapter 5, Verses 23 and 24, the scripture says this, and all the days of Enoch were 365 years. It's a long time to live. And Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him. Now, when I first read this, I was fascinated by the idea that someone could walk with God in such a way that they simply Were not. And as I read those words that Enoch walked with God and he was not, I said within myself, Lord, I wanna be a was not too. I wanna be an empty space through which heaven can touch and influence earth. I want to be a yielded vessel to God. So I want you to make that your prayer too. Write this in the comment section, make me a was not. Let that be your desire. And this really is about daily surrender. So what is surrender to the Holy Spirit? Well, it's not just an emotion, because sometimes I think that when we talk about surrender, we think that we're talking about feeling like serving God every day. But here's the reality. Your feelings will not always match up with what you know you ought to do. And so surrender is simply daily obedience to God, through submission to his word. And you have to listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit. You have to study to show yourself approved. You have to hear the voice of God through that more sure word of prophecy, which is the word. Now, what begins to happen when you live this way, when daily you surrender? And again, I don't want you to complicate this because I think that we imagine that there's this great task before us. And if we're not careful, we go down our checklist and we note all of the different things that have to change in us and all of the different ways that we're not like Jesus. And it can feel overwhelming. Consistency in prayer, consistency to the word, consistency in church attendance, consistency in evangelism, consistency in the resisting of temptation, consistency in boldness. And all of these things begin to pile on and we can feel so overwhelmed. When really we have to recognize that it is simply daily surrender. Your destiny in God is found in daily obedience. That simple death to self daily. To say yes to God and no to the flesh. To say yes to the Holy Spirit and no to sin. To say yes to Jesus and no to the world. No to Satan. No to what you desire. Being like Christ in the garden. Nevertheless, Not my will, but your will be done. So what begins to happen when you do this? Well, as I said just a few moments ago, there is this profound transformation that begins to take place in you that starts to affect those around you. People will not recognize you. That's not hyperbole. That's not an exaggeration. I'm not saying that to get you to listen. It is a fact. That people will see the difference in you. So what happens, number one, you become more like Jesus. Galatians 5:22-23 say this, but the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Love, That's selflessness. Joy, that's inner joy as a result of peace with God. Peace, that's peace with God, peace within, peace with others. Patience, that's the endurance of a proper attitude, or as one pastor friend of mine comments, faith in slow motion. Patience is not just about how long you wait, but your attitude also while you're waiting. Kindness, this is our demeanor and how we treat others. Goodness, this is moral excellence and uprightness. Faithfulness, this is reliability and consistency. Gentleness or meekness or humility, it's not self-hatred, it is the proper view of oneself in reference to who God is. And then finally, self-control, this is the mastery of self. Don't expect to have dominion over demons and the world if you don't yet have dominion over self. Notice here, the scripture says self-control, not Spirit control. In other words, he gives you the ability to control self, but he will not make that decision. Amen. There is no law against these things. All of these attributes describe the nature and the character of Christlikeness. Who was Jesus? Look at how he behaved. Look at how he communed with the Father. Look at how he treated others. Look at how he handled truth. Jesus is our model, our perfection standard, and we must aspire to be more like him. Now, the Holy Spirit begins to produce these things in our lives as we begin to yield to him. And it's those daily pain points, Those little moments where you want to say yes to the flesh, those little moments where you want to say yes to the world, where instead you say, yes, Holy Spirit, I surrender to you and I desire to allow you to do the good work in me. Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives is what Paul writes in Galatians. And then the Holy Spirit begins to produce this kind of fruit. And so this is Christ-likeness. And by the way, Christ-likeness is the greatest indication that you know Jesus. Amen. Because often we imagine that displays of power are the pinnacle of Christlikeness. In other words, some imagine that if they cast out devils or pray in tongues or heal the sick, that they are therefore assured that they have the Holy Spirit. But remember those in Matthew chapter 7, they were able to perform miracles and mighty works, but they did not know Jesus. This is not to communicate, and this does not mean that if you perform miracles or pray for the sick or cast out devils, that you are therefore a hypocrite and will be rejected. That's what some would want you to believe. But rather, this is saying that those who relied upon those works were not accepted because they actually didn't know Jesus. They relied upon the fact that they were being used. Now, that's not describing you, but still, the point I'm simply making here is that power alone is not demonstration that you know Jesus. What good does it do If you speak in tongues, but you have no kindness, or if you can cast out devils, but you don't have love, or if you pray for the sick, but you lack humility. Christlikeness is the greatest demonstration that the Holy Spirit is working in your life. Now, as I begin to assess the various different fruits of the Holy Spirit, what stands out to me, for me, is patience. This is the area I ask for the most help in, and I know the Lord is working on my patience. Let me know in the comment section where you need the most help. I'll go first, it's patience. Number 2, what begins to happen as you daily surrender to the Holy Spirit? What happens in this transformation? Well, you begin to walk in God's perfect will. As you begin to read the Gospels, you'll notice that Jesus did many things. He ate, he slept, he wept, He fled, but never in any instance do we see that Jesus ran or that Jesus rushed or that Jesus was hasty. Why? Jesus never ran, simply put, because Jesus was never late. He walked in the perfect timing of God's will. Now, as we look at Acts chapter 16, we see that Paul and Silas were guided by the Holy Spirit. He guides as you go. He provides instruction as you make progress. He directs you as you get moving. Acts chapter 6, beginning at verse— excuse me, Acts chapter 16, beginning at verse number 6. Next, Paul and Silas traveled to the area of Phrygia and Galatia because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time. Verse 7, then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the province of Bithynia. But again, the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there. So instead, verse 8, They went on through Mysia to the seaport of Troas. Now what's interesting here is that Paul and Silas identified a need, an open door, if you will. They identified a region that needed to receive the gospel. And so being proactive in their faith, they took it upon themselves to take steps that would take them to that region, but the Holy Spirit prevents them. So many believers are stuck in this fear. They're either frozen in paralysis or they're moving too quickly in presumption. We ought not to walk ahead of the Lord and make this fast pace that walks out of that protection. And we ought not to lag behind out of fear. But I find, at least in my experience in talking to many believers, I find that more often than not, believers are missing the will of God, not because they're moving too quickly, but because they're too afraid to do anything at all. And afraid to do the wrong thing, they settle for doing nothing and therefore experience a lack of fruitfulness in their life. But you can trust the Holy Spirit that as you go, he will guide. And so long as you have your ear to the throne, so long as you are keeping the pace of grace, so long as you are making a practice of daily reading the word, daily committing yourself to prayer, and daily being mindful of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life, then you don't have to worry about moving too quickly, for the Holy Spirit, as he did with Paul and Silas, will bring correction to you as well. But you have to be going to be guided. Now, Paul and Silas recognized the need, they begin to move, and then the Holy Spirit stops them. You can trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you. Remember this, we trust not in our ability to hear from God, We trust in his ability to speak to us. Now, as you walk in this daily obedience, where you are choosing the word over Netflix, where you are choosing prayer over entertainment, where you are choosing a lifestyle of worship over a lifestyle of debauchery and worldly pleasure, what begins to also happen is now you begin to learn his voice. Now I do believe that the most clear way that we can hear the Holy Spirit, I referenced this a few minutes ago, is the Scripture. You wanna hear the voice of the Holy Spirit? Read the Bible. If you're serious about hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit, you'll be serious about committing to the Word daily. But the Holy Spirit also speaks specific instructions to us. Now, you may have heard it said that because the Word of God is sufficient, we therefore don't need to hear Him for ourselves, that is speaking directly to our hearts. But I would actually state it in the opposite way, that because the Word is sufficient, we have been sufficiently connected with God who has not gone mute and who has not stopped interacting with his people. So the Scripture was sufficient in putting me in right relationship with God to where now I'm connected to a living God who still speaks. And besides, the Scripture doesn't say in chapter and verse anything about those daily specific instructions that we need that are tailor-made to our everyday lives, like who you should marry, who you should take on as a business partner, what classes you should take, what school you should go to, what state you should live in. These are things that, generally speaking, aren't going to be found in chapter and verse, and so you need to be able to hear from the Holy Spirit for yourself for the daily instruction. Now, of course, Wisdom has its role, and wisdom comes from knowing the Word. But ultimately, when it comes down to it, there are instances where God will have to speak directly to you. So this is what begins to happen now. You become sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. And now you're walking in sync with the Lord. Jesus said that he doesn't do anything unless he sees his Father doing it. Wow, that's interesting. So in a way, Jesus has become like the mirror image of his Father here upon the earth, or like a reflection. It would be rather odd if, while looking in the mirror and moving, you noticed that your reflections had a delayed movement. And so we ought to become like reflections of our heavenly Father, moving precisely when he moves and acting precisely when he instructs us to move, stopping when he says to stop and slowing when he says to slow. So you begin to walk in the perfect will of God, Jesus being our example. Of course, he didn't just walk in the will of God on a monthly basis or a weekly basis or a daily basis. He walked in the perfect will of God down to the very last millisecond so that it could be said of Him, He was a perfect reflection. Just as Jesus reflected the Father, may we too reflect Jesus. And so the Holy Spirit begins to cause you to walk in God's perfect will. Number 1, you become more like Jesus. Number 2, you begin to walk in God's perfect will. And as an added bonus point, You start to hear his voice with greater levels of clarity. Number 3, we are going to address power now because this is a reality when it comes to walking with the Holy Spirit. Number 3, you will walk in signs. Now I know that there's a small but vocal portion of the church that believes that the gifts have ceased, or maybe they believe in the power of the Holy Spirit in theory, but never practice. They like to theorize about it, but the moment anyone actually starts to operate in it, Then there's all sorts of criticisms. So setting that aside, that that kind of extremism I don't think has any place in the body of Christ, and is, if you ask me, borderline heretical. We look at Mark chapter sixteen verses fifteen through eighteen, and then he told them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone." Verse sixteen: Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved, but anyone who refuses to believe. will be condemned. So here in verses 15 and 16, we see Jesus giving what's called the Great Commission. In other words, he's giving to the church the task of world evangelism that comes about through multiplication or succeeds through multiplication. And so we see that he's telling them to go and preach the gospel and giving instructions for those who believe. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Now watch this. In verse 17, Jesus says, these miraculous signs will accompany those who believe. That's verse 17. What is he talking about? Believe what? Well, believe the gospel. So in other words, those who believe the gospel message, and Jesus doesn't put a limiting factor on this, verse 17, these miraculous signs will accompany those who believe. They will cast out demons in my name. They will speak in new languages. They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed. That was Mark chapter 16, verses 15 through 18. Let's break this down. These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: they will cast out demons in my name— self-explanatory— they will speak in new languages, or as other translations would put it, tongues. Now, if you're looking for a detailed breakdown of the gift of tongues, I have several pieces of content here on my channel that cover that, including covering myths people believe about tongues. You also, as you study the New Testament, will begin to see clearly that there are 3 different expressions of the gift of tongues or the variations in the ways that it's used. That's clearly defined in those teachings you can check out on the channel. They will be able to handle snakes with safety. We cross-reference this with other references to serpents, and you'll see that Jesus is talking about demonic powers. So in one sense, you're casting out devils. In another sense, you're handling or you're having dominion over demonic beings. And this would be more than just exorcism in the case of possession. This is commanding authority over the forces of darkness by use of Christ's vicarious authority. authority, or the vicarious authority of Christ in you. Now, if they drink anything deadly, or if they drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them. We have to cross-reference this with Matthew chapter 4, where Jesus was being tempted by Satan, namely the fact that he was told to throw himself off a high point to prove something. And there Jesus responds by saying that you ought not to test the Lord your God. And so there we see the point being established that we don't necessarily go putting ourselves in harm's way just to prove a point. That would be foolish and not at all what's being described in Mark chapter 16. But here the scripture is simply describing divine protection over the life of the one who walks in God's power or believes in the gospel. And then they will be able to place their hands on the sick and they will be healed. Again, another self-explanatory sign. Now, you begin to daily surrender to the Holy Spirit and the potency of his power moving through you begins to increase. Notice here that I'm not saying that if you live a spiritual life, that you will receive more of the Holy Spirit's power. That couldn't be so since Romans 8:9 and Ephesians 1 make it clear that the believer, the one who puts his faith in Christ, is already filled with the Holy Spirit. So you receive the Holy Spirit the very moment you're born again. And with the Holy Spirit comes the fullness of his power. All that the Holy Spirit is comes to dwell in you. God does not deposit a new convert Holy Spirit, a baby Holy Spirit, a portion of the Holy Spirit. It's not as though the more spiritual you become, the more rewarded you become with greater measures of the Holy Spirit. In fact, without the Holy Spirit, you could not be spiritual. Furthermore, without the Holy Spirit, you wouldn't even desire to be spiritual. So he gives you the desire, He gives you the discipline. He gives you the power and the grace. And this all, of course, is deposited the very moment you are saved. I'm not saying you get more of the Holy Spirit when you surrender. I would rather put it that the Holy Spirit gets more of you. God is not looking for golden vessels or silver vessels. God is looking for yielded vessels. It's not a matter of how charismatic you are, how intelligent you are, how gifted you are. It's a matter of how surrendered you are to the Holy Spirit. And there is no limit to what God can do with a life surrendered to the Holy Spirit. Power begins to flow. The scripture makes this absolutely clear. The teachings of scripture are not fundamentally, how shall I put this, material or natural. They are fundamentally supernatural and only superficially natural. In other words, the very essence of our relationship with God, the very essence of the teachings of Jesus, the very essence of the teachings of Scripture is supernatural. There is power in your faith in God. God has not lost his power. The Holy Spirit has not lost his power. Jesus has not lost his power. That power has not waned in potency, and it is in your life, deposited in you, waiting to be tapped. Amen. Depending upon your level of surrender. When you surrender to the Holy Spirit, you walk in that daily obedience, you die 1,000 deaths a day, and I'm not talking about literal death, I'm talking about choosing God over self. You say yes to the Holy Spirit and no to the cravings of the sinful nature. Then something begins to happen in you and that power becomes potent. The power of God upon your life is directly proportionate to the purity within your life. When you follow the Holy Spirit in this way, you don't have to go chasing after signs, signs chase after you. You don't have to go and find atmospheres, you become an atmosphere, a carrier of God's glory. Number 4, you become more bold. Acts 4:13 says, the members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John. For they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. That's Acts chapter four, verse thirteen. This boldness that they received came about as a result of their relationship with Christ, that connection they had with him, and others recognized on their life that boldness. Now take, for example, Peter, who. denies the Lord Jesus 3 times and is afraid to express his allegiance to the Master. But then later we see that this same individual who denied Jesus is now standing before thousands, boldly declaring a gospel message that was offensive to its hearers. And he didn't have any misgivings about sharing it in that forum because now he was empowered in Acts chapter 2, where the Holy Spirit came upon him for the work of ministry. So the Holy Spirit begins to bring about boldness in you. And this is not just a personality contest. I'm not saying that the extroverts are more Spirit-filled because even introverts can be bold. It's not a matter of having no fear or no self-consciousness. It's a matter of obeying God even when you have that fear. And the Holy Spirit begins to produce that in you. So don't look at others and say, I'm not like them. Don't look at someone you know and say, well, they have an outgoing personality. I'm a little more shy. I'm a little more reserved. Again, I'm not describing a personality type. I'm describing a character trait. I'm not saying you have to be loud and brash and outgoing. I'm saying that you have to be obedient, even in the face of fear. And that's the boldness that the Holy Spirit produces in you as you begin to walk in that daily obedience. The righteous, the scripture declares, are as bold as lions. Sin makes cowards out of Christians. Sin makes you cowardly. Sin makes you shrink back. Sin makes you second-guess your identity in Christ and therefore your authority in Christ. Sin causes you to walk with reservation and hesitation and shame. Whereas if you allow that obedience to produce that boldness in you, You become like a lion. So, so far we see, you become more like Jesus, you walk in God's perfect will, you walk in signs, you become more bold. Number 5, you overcome sinful living. In Galatians 5:16-17, Paul writes, so I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. There we see that allowance of the Holy Spirit to work. Now I've heard it said by snarky commenters that this concept of submission or surrender to the Holy Spirit isn't biblical, that the Holy Spirit is just gonna do what he wants. And while it is true that the Holy Spirit can do whatever he desires, generally speaking, he works with our submission and surrender. And here in verse 16, we see that clearly spelled out. So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Continuing now to read the scripture. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These 2 forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. You're likely familiar with this battle that you face because you face it every single day. This tension between who you want to be in Christ and what your sinful nature craves today. And perhaps you've grown frustrated with this back and forth battle, believing God to give you breakthrough in a certain area in your life. Maybe you've become frustrated because the things you want to do, you just can't seem to do them. And the things that you want to stop doing, it seems there's this this impulse, this other force at work, and you just can't bring yourself to stop those things. Let me tell you something. No matter how many times you've attempted to be free, no matter how many different methods you've tried, no matter how frustrated you've grown, you have to know this. You can be free. Don't allow hope deferred to rob you of your faith. I know you've tried. I know you've made mistakes. I know you feel like you've failed. fallen again and again, only to get up and then fall again and again. But remember, the mercies of God are new every morning, and the Holy Spirit is with you in every moment. It is simply through surrender, submission to God. If you do what the Holy Spirit is leading you to do, that will weaken the desires of the sin nature. And I'm not even saying that part of you is truly That's not really you. Don't even identify with that person. Yes, you're responsible for how you exercise your free will, but don't identify with your mistakes. Don't allow your sin to become your name because God does not call you by your sin. He calls you by the righteousness of Christ because you've placed your faith in the finished work of the cross. Still, there's this tension. What do you do when you read free, but in your everyday life, you experience spiritual bondage? You surrender to the Holy Spirit. You say, how do I do that? Little by little, a step at a time, moment by moment, day by day. And as you begin to see those even seemingly insignificant victories, You'll notice the sin nature begins to lose its power. Yes, you should work on accountability. Yes, you should work on discipline. Yes, you should exercise your free will against the cravings of the sin nature. Don't hear what I'm not saying. You ought to do all of those things. Do the practical, but don't forget about the supernatural. You do the difficult, God will do the impossible. Yes, use what you have in your toolkit against sin. But ultimately, remember that it's in surrendering to the Holy Spirit that we find freedom. Not just about what we shouldn't do, but it's also about what we should become, who we are in Christ. And so daily, You surrender daily, you yield. And on some days you'll do better than others, but he's not gonna forsake you. Please hear me now. He will not abandon you to the bondage of sin. And little by little, you'll notice the strength of the Spirit rising just in that daily surrender. For we overcome Not through toiling and fighting and tension and striving, but through yielding to the precious Holy Spirit. Father, I pray you help them to do it, that they might experience that freedom from the flesh. Thank you, precious Holy Spirit, that you are strengthening your people. That's what I hear right now. He's strengthening you. He's encouraging you. If you feel like you failed, he's standing with you, not to approve the wrongdoing, but to help you get it right. Thank you, Lord, that you are strengthening that one watching now, that one listening now. You're giving them the strength to try again, to keep going, to daily surrender. I give you the praise, Jesus, for touching their lives even now. Amen. I want you to receive it, and if you do, I want you to type in the comment section a big amen. Now listen, if you believe that other Christians absolutely have to hear this encouraging word, make sure you leave a like. That helps to spread the teaching further. The Great Commission will succeed. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Get involved. Don't shrink back in fear and say, oh, the economy, or oh, what's going on in this political realm, or oh, what's going on in this nation, or what's going on in that economic sector. Listen, people have been saying the sky is falling for hundreds of years now, and it's yet to reach the ground. God is in control. And because God is in control, you can be released from fear. Get in the spiritual fight. Darkness is not taking a break. Darkness is not relenting, neither should we. And so I'm asking you to join these efforts. There's a lot of other things going on in our world, but the gospel is the most important message and souls. Well, that's the most important cause. So don't be distracted. Stay focused. We can do this. Let's overcome the powers of darkness through the spreading of the word of God. I love you, I pray for you, and I'm thankful for you. Until next time, remember, nothing is impossible with God.
