Why You’re So Insecure Even Though You’re A Child of God

In this devotional teaching, the speaker (David Hernandez) addresses Christian believers who struggle with insecurity despite their identity as children of God. He first outlines common symptoms of insecurity—doubting salvation, over‑explaining, difficulty setting boundaries, defensiveness, isolation, fear of rejection, indecisiveness, and avoidance of ministry opportunities. He then identifies three primary “lies” that underlie these symptoms: (1) the belief that the future is bleak, which he counters with biblical promises of a glorious future (Philippians 3:20‑21, 2 Cor 4:17, Ephesians 1:13‑14); (2) the belief that the Holy Spirit has abandoned the believer, which he refutes by citing John 14:16‑18 and emphasizing the Spirit’s permanent indwelling and empowerment for both spiritual and everyday tasks; and (3) the belief that one’s past sins are not truly forgiven, which he clarifies by distinguishing conviction from condemnation and referencing Psalm 51, 1 John 1:9, Psalm 103, Hebrews 4:16. Throughout, he stresses that true confidence flows from a correct understanding of one’s identity in Christ—being sealed by the Holy Spirit, a dwelling place of God’s glory, and a recipient of God’s promises for past, present, and future. The teaching concludes with practical exhortations to believe Scripture, reset the “check‑engine light” of conviction, and pursue boldness in ministry, followed by calls to like, subscribe, and financially support the ministry.

Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, you still struggle with doubt and insecurity? Insecurity makes it very difficult to progress in your walk with God. So I want to help you expose, uncover, and eliminate insecurity so that you can walk in divine confidence. Let's begin by identifying some of the symptoms that will help you to recognize that maybe you're not walking in the divine confidence that God has created you to walk in. One of the symptoms, and this is a big one, is that you're constantly doubting your salvation. You think that from one day to the next, maybe God has rejected you. Another would be that you're constantly overexplaining yourself. When you take a stand or when you speak a truth, or when you state your opinion, you're fumbling over yourself to say that. And you feel like setting boundaries around you, maybe with other people, maybe with people who don't treat you so kindly, Maybe with people who take a lot of your time and your energy. You feel like setting that boundary is wrong and you feel uncomfortable doing it, and you're constantly second-guessing those decisions. Conversely, one of the symptoms of a lack of divine confidence could be this defensiveness, because insecurity is very defensive. Maybe when someone tries to bring correction to you, there's this anger that spurts out. Maybe when someone confronts you on an issue, There's this uneasiness. Do people say that they feel like walking on eggshells when they're around you? Like they have to tread carefully as to not upset you or send you into an emotional spiral? That comes from insecurity because many times when people touch on those areas in our heart that are softer or more vulnerable, we have this defensiveness because we've been hurt or because we've been betrayed or because we feel like we can't trust anyone. Maybe you're lonely and isolated, and in that loneliness and isolation, you've found yourself stepping away from fellowship with others. Your relationships are disconnected and scattered, and maybe you find it difficult to reach out and communicate with people for fear of rejection. Maybe you think that everyone around you just thinks negatively of you. You assume that people have bad thoughts toward you. You assume that people don't want you around. You assume that you are unwelcome. If they're laughing in some corner of the room, you You assume that they're laughing at you. You get uncomfortable. You wanna get out of the room. You don't wanna be around crowds of people. You're mentally, emotionally drained just from conversation alone, because you feel like you're having to perform just to receive that acceptance from others. Maybe you take forever to make decisions. And while it's wise to take your time and consider the different options that the Lord has placed before you, you have to remember that there is this decisiveness that comes with divine confidence. I'm not saying that you're foolish or presumptuous. I'm saying that it's very difficult to make those decisions when you lack in divine confidence, because you're second-guessing every possible scenario. You're playing the worst-case scenario in your mind over and over again. Let me know in the comments if I'm describing anything you're going through. You avoid confrontation with other people for fear of rejection. You don't want to confront issues. You don't want to correct issues. You don't want to set boundaries. Or maybe you don't pursue your God-given dreams because you're afraid of failing. You're afraid of starting that Bible study. You're afraid of starting that church. You're afraid of starting that media ministry. You're afraid of starting that channel. You're afraid of stepping out and volunteering in the children's department, on the worship team, in the media team. You're afraid of doing something for God because you're afraid it will fail. Well, the root cause of these symptoms is insecurity. And insecurity, when it comes to the spirit, its ultimate root cause is a lack of identity. So here is how you begin now to walk in that divine confidence. Let's first expose one of the primary lies that has to do with this cultivation of that insecurity. Number 1, you don't believe your future is bright. Now, what do I mean by that? Well, in your mind, you've already settled the thought that nothing good is ever going to happen to you, that there's nothing but calamity and struggle and trial in the future. You think that you're just the kind of person that bad things happen for, and there's nothing that you can do about it. Maybe it's based on something that happened to you in your past, and you can't break from that mindset. Because you're constantly worrying about the future. You're constantly doubting about what God can do. You fear the future because you're afraid you might fail. You're afraid that if you start the business, it's not going to work. You're afraid that if you step out to do something for God, that it's ultimately not going to have any fruit. You're afraid that if you step out to do something, others might mock you. Maybe you fear catastrophe and you're constantly imagining the worst-case scenarios for every aspect of your life. You're afraid of getting hurt. You're afraid of getting sick. You're afraid of being rejected. You're afraid of your life falling apart. You're afraid of what people might think. You're worried because you think that people are ultimately gonna leave you. Maybe you're afraid of making connections with people because you've already settled in your mind that no matter what happens, that if anybody really truly gets to know you, surely they'll abandon you. That if anybody really saw the real you, surely they would reject you and leave or want nothing to do with you, or be so appalled at who you really are that they just wouldn't wanna be around you anymore. So let's overcome this type of thinking, this thinking concerning the future. Philippians 3:20-21 say this, But we are citizens of heaven where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which we— excuse me, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control. So So here we see a promise in scripture in verse 21, that he will take our weak and mortal bodies, these frail vessels, and change them into glorious bodies like his own. The future is glorious. No matter what happens here on earth, we know what happens there in eternity. No matter what happens here in this body, we know that ultimately God is there and promising us new and glorified bodies. Now, this obviously brings up the question, well, what about here and now? That's great for then and there. What about here and now? Well, see, you can begin to have confidence for here and now because of what you know is in your future. Many of our worries surround some of the material things of this world, and all of them aren't necessarily bad or distracting. For example, you may have worries about your family. Maybe you're afraid that you're going to fail as a spouse. And that your marriage is going to end in divorce. Maybe you're afraid that you're not going to be a great parent and that your kids will ultimately reject you, or that you'll damage your kids in some emotional or psychological way because you didn't perform as well as you thought you could have as a parent. Or you think that your relationship is going to become strained because you make a few mistakes here and there. Maybe you feel like you're never going to advance in the career that God has called you to. Maybe you feel like you're never going to get that promotion. And that's not what it's all about. We understand the gospel is not a promise of what we can gain here and now, nor is the gospel a guarantee that we will have material earthly acquisition, but it is a promise that our future is bright. And it is a promise that God is with you now. So never mind with this doomsday thinking that tells you that everything about your family is going to fail, or that you're never going to be fruitful. in your career or at work, or that you're gonna be always overlooked. Maybe you're afraid for your future in terms of your studying for school. And you think that you'll never be able to pass. You'll never be able to get that degree. You'll never be able to get that diploma. You'll never be able to bring up your GPA, that you're just going to struggle. And no matter what you do, that you're doomed to repeat maybe the mistakes of past generations, or maybe what you perceive to be the failures of past generations. So you worry about the future of your family. You worry about the future of your career. You worry about the future of school. Those of you who feel called to ministry, maybe you feel worried about the future of the ministry that God has given to you. Maybe you feel worried about the future of your salvation. And you wonder if at some point God is just ultimately gonna reject you. And every time a preacher preaches on Matthew 7 or a scripture like it, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? You immediately allow yourself to identify with that and say, well, that has to be me. Well, that's not what the scripture says. 2 Corinthians 4:17, for our present troubles are small and won't last very long, yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. Ephesians 1:13-14, and now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the good news that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own. You belong to Jesus. How does he identify us as his own? It says it right here, by giving you the Holy Spirit whom he promised long ago. The Spirit, watch this now, this is powerful. The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so that we would praise and glorify him. Troubles today, glory tomorrow. No matter how it is today, understand that it always ends in glory. So long as Jesus is in your future, your future is bright because he shines like the sun. So if you don't believe your future is bright, you need to start believing the promises of God concerning your future, no matter what you see around you, no matter what you feel within you, no matter what others say or do or don't do, you need to begin to walk in that faith in the future so that that confidence might return. So many of you are lacking that confidence in your identity in Christ because of what you believe about your future. Number 2, many are lacking in their confidence, and you might be lacking in your confidence because you don't believe you have the Holy Spirit. This right here, I just, you ever get righteous indignation? I get so upset with the devil because this right here is one of the primary lies that he uses against believers. Remember that confidence is directly linked to competence. Confidence is directly linked to competence. The more competent you feel, the more confident you are. And many believers lack that sense of competence Because they believe that the Holy Spirit abandons them for every mistake that they make. They believe that if they have a bad thought, that the Holy Spirit flutters away like a frightened bird. They believe that no matter how hard they try, that they're not going to get the full measure of God's power. They imagine that the Holy Spirit is a reward for being spiritual, as opposed to the empowering presence of God to help you be like Jesus. God didn't save you so that you can live in doubt about your salvation. God didn't save you so that you could walk in fear and paranoia, constantly wondering if you're accepted. God didn't save you so that you could lack confidence and identity in him. God didn't save you so that you could wonder if the Holy Spirit abandoned you. When the Holy Spirit comes to abide in the believer, and you have to come to know this, I rebuke every lie of the enemy that would tell you otherwise. Yes, your emotions may tell you otherwise. Yes, your circumstances may seem to indicate otherwise. Yes, your mistakes might tell a different story, but there's a truth that's greater than all of those speakers of falsehoods combined. There's a truth that is more powerful than any deception that the enemy has tried to veil over your eyes. And that truth is that you as a born-again believer have the Holy Spirit of God within you. The Holy Spirit doesn't come and go. That is a lie of the enemy. John 14:16-18, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, Because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans. I will come to you. Pay attention to the language being used by the Lord Jesus in this portion of scripture. He is the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth. This is verse 17. The world cannot receive him. because it isn't looking for Him and doesn't recognize Him. Notice here in verse 16 that Jesus says, and I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate who will never leave you. The Holy Spirit doesn't leave you. Jesus Himself said this. Jesus Himself promised that the Holy Spirit won't abandon you. Jesus Himself promised that the Holy Spirit won't reject you. I know sometimes you may feel like you're distant from God. I know sometimes you might feel like the Holy Spirit has abandoned you, but that's the problem, isn't it? Many of us lack a sense of identity because we're basing our identity on how we feel rather than on God's word. You find your identity not in feelings, but in faith in what God has said about you. There is no lack for the child of God when it comes to the possibilities of the spiritual realm. The Holy Spirit dwells in you in the fullness of his potential and power. The same Holy Spirit who hovered above the face of the deep in Genesis and who fluttered as God spoke the word of creation, causing all of the dark corners of this universe to be filled with light, that same Holy Spirit dwells in you. The same Holy Spirit who gave to the crafters of the items in the tabernacle excellence in their craft empowers you in your craft. He is the Spirit of excellence, not just empowering you for what seems to be supernatural, but he also empowers you for the things that we label as mundane, material, earthly, and natural. He doesn't just empower preachers and prophets and teachers and apostles and evangelists. The Holy Spirit also empowers parents and students and workers and children. The Holy Spirit empowers you for everyday practical living. Never mind with this idea that we live in this gradient. What do I mean by gradient? Well, if you've ever seen one of those images where on one side there's a distinct color, on the other side there's another color, and there's this faded blend of the 2 colors in between, And you can move in between those 2 colors and get a little bit of both at any certain time. That's how many of us imagine our salvation. We see saved and unsaved, and then we imagine this faded gradient, this blended gradient in between. And then we see ourselves moving back and forth on that gradient. And on some days we say, well, I'm a little saved, I'm a little unsaved. On other days we say, well, I'm a little more saved than I was yesterday. And then on other days we may say, well, we slid all the way over Into the unsaved category. On most days, we can't even tell. Am I born again or am I not? Is Jesus with me? Have I been abandoned? Is the Holy Spirit in me or has he left me? No, Jesus said he'll never leave you. It's not a gradient. That's not how salvation looks. It's a bold, distinct line. And because of the Holy Spirit within you, that is God's guarantee that you've moved to the other side and that you have received the righteousness of God. in Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit being the sign, the symbol, the seal, God's mark on you, guaranteeing that that is what you have indeed received. And that is who indeed you are in Christ. You are his dwelling place. You are a carrier of the glory. When you truly believe that he's in you, insecurity vanishes. Why? Because greater is he who is in me than he that is in the world. Do you wanna stop feeling insecure? You wanna stop second-guessing your salvation? Then believe the word of God. You wanna stop backing down? You wanna stop doubting your future in Christ? You wanna stop doubting your identity and who you are in him? Do you want to stop living in the powerlessness of doubt and insecurity and uncertainty and confusion? Then decide now to believe the truth of the word of God. which tells you that the Holy Spirit dwells in you. The Scripture makes it clear that the same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead dwells in you. The same Spirit who moved the prophets to speak, the same Spirit who caused David to write poetic stanzas of worship in what we call the Psalms, the same Holy Spirit who gave wisdom to Solomon, the same Holy Spirit who descended on Jesus like a dove, The same Holy Spirit who empowered the disciples to preach with boldness, the same Holy Spirit who poured out power on the early church and causing a great revival to spread in the earth, that same Holy Spirit dwells in you. Not a baby Holy Spirit, not a new convert Holy Spirit, not a portion of the Holy Spirit. The fullness of God the Holy Spirit dwells in you. I rebuke every lie of the enemy that says otherwise. Now, the next source of insecurity that I wanna help expose and eliminate is probably the most common that believers battle with. Yes, even more common than that fear about the future, even more common than that doubt that the Holy Spirit is with you now. Now I know that intellectually we understand that, and you probably have heard this 1,000 times. Oh, there's no sin so great that God can't forgive, or there's no darkness so dark that the light of God can't brighten it. And I understand that we hear these things, and maybe you have, Maybe you've heard preaching like this before, but you just can't seem to get rid of that stain of shame. You just can't seem to shake off the past. You just can't seem to let it completely go. Maybe before, your past was like a bag that you held over your shoulder and it weighed heavily upon you. And then you were able to remove the bag, you put it down on the ground, but you still have a rope attached to your leg that's still connected to the bag. So you may not be carrying it directly. You may not have it ever on your mind constantly, but there's this subtle cloud, this subtle darkening of the mind, this subtle shame, this subtle sense of guilt for the past, this subtle sense of fear about the past coming back to get you. And you just can't shake that off your shoulders. And you're having trouble actually truly believing that you've received a new life in Christ. Shame steals confidence. Shame steals confidence. If you're filled with shame and guilt for sins for which you've been forgiven, then you're gonna live in the lack of identity. You're going to live in the lack of confidence. Why? Because you're so tied up in your past that you can't even enjoy the present or the future. Amen. And by the way, when you are tied up in the past, you begin to identify with your past mistakes. And this is where we need to point out the difference between conviction and condemnation. Have you ever been confronted on a sin and you sense that you did wrong? You sense the heaviness of the hand of God. You sense the chastisement of the Father coming against you, and he corrects you for the sake of restoration. Well, that's a good thing. In fact, the scripture declares that godly sorrow worketh repentance, and that's important to have that. But do you realize that there's also a guilt and a shame that the devil can use that lingers well beyond a point that is helpful? It lingers well beyond the point where you've already been forgiven, well beyond the point where you've already repented. Years ago, I took my car into the mechanic, had them repair several things, and as I was driving away from the mechanic, I looked on the dashboard and recognized that my check engine light was on. Well, I was upset because I had just paid the mechanic to fix everything. So I turned my car back around, pull into the shop, and I tell the mechanic, listen, you just did all these repairs. I already paid you for all these repairs. Yet there goes my check engine light again. He explained to me, all of the repairs have been made. I just need to reset the check engine light. So he reset the light, off I went, not a problem since. And that check engine light is like the conviction of the Holy Spirit. You see, the check engine light goes on when something is wrong. But after you've made repairs, after you've repented, after you've given it to God, after you've turned from that sin, it's time to reset the check engine light. It's time to reset that indicator. And then it's time to move on in your new life in Christ. Yes, you can move on. Yes, you can experience joy. Yes, you can experience peace. You may say, but David, I don't deserve that, or I shouldn't be given that, or you don't realize what I've done or how bad it was. And listen to me now. Whatever it was, how bad you feel, how dark the darkness, does not matter. There is no sinful stain so strong that the blood of Jesus cannot wash it away. You have to learn the difference between conviction and condemnation. The conviction of the Holy Spirit says, you made a mistake. Condemnation says, you are a mistake. Conviction is for restoration. Condemnation is purely for punishment. Conviction pushes you toward God in repentance. Condemnation pushes you away from God in shame. In Psalm 51:1-10, we read, Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion. It haunts me day and night. Against you and you alone have I sinned. I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. For I was born a sinner. Yes. From the moment my mother conceived me. But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there. Purify me from my sins and I will be clean. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again. You have broken me. Now let me rejoice. Don't keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. 1 John 1:9 says, but if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness or unrighteousness. Psalm 103:8-12, the Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to anger and filled with unfailing love. Listen to this now. He will not constantly accuse us, Nor remain angry forever. He does not punish us for all our sins. He does not deal harshly with us as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Hebrews 4:16 says, so let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God, There we will receive his mercy and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. You want your confidence back? Start believing what God says about your future, your present, and your past. You want to get rid of insecurity? Then follow after the Great I Am. You know, when Moses was confronted by God and commissioned to do ministry, Moses gave to God several excuses. And to those excuses, God said, Tell them I am has sent you. In other words, God is not bound by time. He's in the past, he's in the present, and he's already in your future. And what he says about your past, present, and future—that is what the truth is. Start to believe that, and you will gain back your divine confidence. Precious Lord, I pray you help them to do it. Holy Spirit, I pray you remind them even now. Of who they are in you. Give them boldness. Give them the faith to believe what the word declares concerning them and their identity. Give them faith for the future. Give them faith for the present and give them faith for the past. Help them to be rooted in you. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. And I want you to write it in the comment section. If you believe it, type a Amen. Listen, I want to invite you to be a part of what God is doing through his ministry, through this work.
