You Don't Need to Worry About Your Future (This Will Encourage You)

A sermon on Romans 8:23-28 about trusting God with your future. The Holy Spirit intercedes for you in weakness, praying with groans that align with God's will. God works all circumstances together for the good of those who love Him, even through trials, financial worry, and uncertainty.

You don't need to worry about your future, and I wanna tell you why. Go with me to Romans chapter 8. I'm gonna begin reading at verse number 23. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We too wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised. We were given this hope when we were saved. If we already have something, we don't need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don't yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently. Now watch this, verse 26. And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father, who knows all hearts, knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. A few things we want to examine from the writings of Paul here. First, take a look at what he mentions here concerning the foretaste of future glory. In other words, the Holy Spirit within you is an example Of what your future holds. Now we understand that the Holy Spirit dwells in every believer in fullness, and if you don't know it, I'll tell you now. If you believe on the Lord Jesus, then that means that at the very moment that you were saved, you received the Holy Spirit in the fullness of his power. You did not receive a portion of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not a reward for being super spiritual. He is the power unto spirituality. He's the only chance we have at being spiritual or even desiring to be spiritual. And so the Holy Spirit was deposited in you. The same Holy Spirit who raised Christ from the dead dwells in you. The same Holy Spirit who worked in the ministries of the apostles dwells in you. The same Holy Spirit who moved upon the early church dwells in you. That same Holy Spirit. Now think of those encounters you've had with the precious Holy Spirit. Think about those moments of prayer where you could sense the love of God, where you could sense his peace overflowing your heart. Think about those moments of worship when you can sense heaven touching earth, where the plain ordinary settings, where the plain mundane surroundings become heaven on earth as you worship the Lord. Think of those moments of joy that you experience when you praise God. Think of those encounters you've had with the Holy Spirit in church services, at revival meetings, or even during a private time of devotion at home. And now I want you to realize that that sense of his love, that sense of his power— and many of you have sensed his power with great intensity, some even report sensing the power of the Holy Spirit like a weight coming on them or like a fire coming on them or like electricity coming on their body. Whatever your encounter with him, whatever your experience, you need to understand that that encounter with the Holy Spirit is just a little taste of what we will experience when we walk into the other side of eternity. Now I wanna be clear here. Because this may seem like a contradiction. Wait a minute, how can it be that I have the Holy Spirit in fullness, but then it's just a foretaste of what I will experience? Well, the difference is this: the Holy Spirit dwells in you fully, but that doesn't mean that you yet walk in him fully. And that's 2 different dynamics. You have the Holy Spirit, but does the Holy Spirit have you? You see, When you get your new body, when you walk in heavenly realms, when you've crossed over into the eternal kingdom, then you're no longer hindered by the distractions of this world. You're no longer tired in a physical body. You're no longer pushed around by emotions that are like waves crashing on the shore. Your mind is no longer cluttered by the many thoughts and concerns of this world. But when you're with him, when you've crossed over into the heavenly realm, then you are without the flesh. Then you are without the distractions. Then you are without the cares and the concerns. And you can come to know what it is to be in him fully, what it is to be surrendered to him fully, what it is to encounter him. without human limitation. So you don't need to be afraid for your future. You don't need to worry about what lies ahead. Maybe in this season you just feel exhausted with worry. It's one bad report after the other. It's one bad headline after the other. You hear of everything going on politically and you can sense the turmoil around you. You hear of the reports of what's coming our way economically And maybe fear has gripped your heart. Perhaps you fear for the future of your children. Perhaps you're concerned for the future of the ministry that God has entrusted to you. Maybe you're worried about your finances. Maybe you're worried about your health. Maybe you're worried about your marriage. Maybe you're worried about your mind, your emotions. You have concerns. Where will I go? Who will I become? What will I do? Am I going to fulfill God's plan for my life? Am I going to make it? Am I going to live a life that ultimately pleases him, or will I fail somehow? Listen, while we ought to do our part, while we ought to live lives worthy of the calling to which we have been called, you have to remember that ultimately it depends upon him. And so that's number one. You don't have to worry about your future because There's a fore— the foretaste of glory gives you an idea of what to experience in eternity. And no matter what happens on this side of eternity, when you believe on the Lord Jesus, you know that ultimately it ends in victory. Ultimately it ends in union with God. Ultimately it ends with pain and suffering and sickness being no more. You'll never feel lonely again. You'll never feel rejected again. You'll never know pain again. That is what is promised to us. But we also don't have to worry about our future because Paul writes here that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. When we don't know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit prays for us. And I love what the scripture says. For the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will. In other words, you don't have to worry because the Holy Spirit's praying for you. You don't have to worry because the Holy Spirit is inclining your heart to the Word of God. The Holy Spirit is bending you to the will of the Father. The Holy Spirit is guiding you along the path of righteousness. Listen, don't trust in your ability to hang on to him. Trust in his ability to hold on to you. Amen. He's not going to fail. He's not going to lose you. He's not going to make a mistake. Yes, there will be trials. Yes, you will make mistakes, but ultimately you trust in his ability to keep you. He is praying for you. He is behind you. He is giving you grace. He is giving you power. He is guiding and correcting, and if ever you get off the Holy Spirit can chastise you and bring you back on the path of righteousness. The Holy Spirit is praying for you with groanings that cannot be uttered. In other words, there's this great passion, this great zeal behind the prayers of the Holy Spirit, and he's pleading for you in harmony with God's will. That means he is aligning you. You may not have all the answers, But he does. You may not know what the future holds, but he does. You might be concerned about what's coming, but he isn't. You might not know how to handle the trouble ahead, but he does. And you can bet that he has the power to perform what he promised. He has the power to perform what he promised. Just abide. Just trust. You know, we complicate things and we add so much to our relationship with Christ that I think sometimes we fail to remember that it's as simple as trusting him and obeying him. Trust and obey. Trust and obey. Trust and obey. It's that simple. And as you trust and obey, the Holy Spirit who is guiding you The Holy Spirit who is speaking to you, the Holy Spirit who is praying for you in harmony with God's will, will cause you to fulfill the destiny he has for you. I know you've made mistakes. I know it doesn't seem like right now everything is going to work out. I know you may be looking at your situation and saying, "I don't see how this ends well. I don't see how this works out." Or maybe the devil's lying to you and saying, "It's over." You've made too many mistakes, or if God was going to fulfill his promise for you, it would have happened by now. Hang in there. Trust God. I know that's not what we want to hear sometimes. Sometimes we want to have the solution presented right away. Sometimes we just want the situation resolved. Sometimes we want everything to just have already worked out, but sometimes also God is saying, just trust me. You don't need to worry about your future. You know, God's already in your future. Think about that. He's not just knowledgeable and present in the past. He's not just knowledgeable and present here in this moment, but he's already in your tomorrow. God's already there and he is waiting for you. I don't know what is in your tomorrow, but I know who is in your tomorrow. And because I know who is in your tomorrow, I know that you can rest knowing that you can trust him. He's gonna take care of it. No, it's not gonna work out exactly like you want it to. No, you're not gonna be able to avoid trials. Jesus said, in this world you'll have tribulation. No, that doesn't mean you'll never know a day of heartache, never know a day of loss, never know a day of disappointment. God didn't promise us perfect lives, but he promised to be present. He promised to walk through it with us. He promised to love us. He promised to never leave us nor forsake us. He promised to give us peace and to give us joy and to give us power, even as we endure that which is difficult. And through it all, we can remember that we have a faithful friend, the precious Holy Spirit, guiding us. Finally, I also want to look at this very popular verse, verse 28. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Well, how can we know that? Well, that's because the Holy Spirit is praying for you. That's because the Holy Spirit dwells within you. He's that foretaste of glory. He's praying for you in harmony with God's own will, and he is causing everything to work together for the good. This doesn't mean that you're going to like everything that comes your way. This doesn't mean that you're going to enjoy every season that you're in, though you can have joy in every season. Not every season is going to be without challenges. You can know in every season that he's walking through it with you. You can know in every season that he's taking all of the details. He's taking all of the disappointment. He's taking all of the heartache. And he's working it together for your good. Again, you may be saying, well, you know, I don't like what I'm facing right now, or I don't like this trial, or I don't like the heartache I'm feeling. God's going to use it, and he is going to give you a testimony that will help others, and he is going to strengthen your character He's going to strengthen your faith. He's going to strengthen your spiritual resolve. Well, how can you ever grow in strength if you never carry weight? How can you ever grow in the Spirit if you never face trials? But he takes all of those things, and some of those things hurt, and some of those things are inconvenient, and some of those things may even feel like they're a delay. But he takes it all, and in his sovereignty, in his wisdom, he creates for us the perfect path ahead. You don't need to worry about your future because your future is in God's hands. So stop listening to the propaganda. Stop listening to the doomsday sayers. Stop listening to the prophylies. Stop listening to the hype. and start listening to the voice of the precious Holy Spirit. Stop listening to fear and start listening to faith. Stop listening to the lies and start listening to truth. You are a child of God and God is in your future, in your present. He's with you, he's for you, he's in you, and he's working everything out for your good. So Father, I pray you help them to remember this. Keep them steadfast in their faith, even as everything around them seems to be shaken. May we rest upon you, the only solid ground that we will ever know. Our faith is in you, Lord Jesus. I know that sometimes in tumultuous times, it can become human nature to hold on to resources, and that's what many people are doing in this season. They're, they're waiting to see how the dust settles politically, economically, socially. And so they're holding on, looking at the conditions, saying, let me wait it— let me hold on to what I have and let me wait and see what's going to happen. I challenge you by faith to step out, say no to fear, and say no, the gospel has to go forward, not even in uncertain times, but the gospel has to go forward especially in uncertain times. The devil's not taking a day off, neither should we. Don't hold it in fear, release it in faith. Trust God and help the work. Don't discount yourself, don't say your giving doesn't matter.
