You'll see this right before God is trying to speak to you

David Diga Hernandez describes seven signs the Holy Spirit sends before speaking to you: restlessness with worldly things, hunger for God, repeated words in dreams and sermons, gentle conviction, removal of distractions, spiritual opposition, and finally a quiet whisper. He draws on scripture and personal stories of moving to California and extended prayer.

I don't think it's an accident that you're watching this. Lately, you've been asking yourself a question, though maybe not out loud. Was that God or was that just me? You sense that nudge from the Holy Spirit, the gentle sense that He's near, but then you talk yourself out of it because no one ever taught you what it looks like when God is about to speak. So you just keep missing it, not because God is silent, But because you didn't recognize the signs. I'm David Diga Hernandez, and I've devoted my life to friendship with the Holy Spirit and helping other believers come into that friendship with the Holy Spirit. Let me share with you the signs that God is about to speak. Now, because these concepts build one upon the other, I've saved the most important for the very last. It's the reason why you can go years without hearing God, Even though he's been speaking the whole time. Let's begin. Sign number one: a holy restlessness that you just can't explain. There's like this stirring, a sudden disconnect from the cares of this world, a sudden discontent with the pleasures of this world. Psalm 73:25 declares, "Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth." This is just no matter what you do, there's just this dissatisfaction. You still feel joy and love and peace. And you, you know, the Lord loves you, but there's this, this sense that something has to change. There's something more. There's something bigger. There's something right around the corner. And I know I'm not where God wants me to be exactly. I just don't know where He wants me to go. Well, that sudden disconnect, that sudden recognition that there's no satisfaction in this world, that's when God is about to declare something to you. Now, we as Christians, of course, live in that state where we're not completely satisfied in this world, only in him. But, you know, there are levels to that. There are cycles to that because sometimes we do get a little distracted. So God now begins to pull you away from the familiar. God now begins to shake things up. I know this happened for me when All of my friends were deciding on their careers. I remember the stress that I felt when I had an opportunity for college before me, and I didn't want to take it because there was something in me that said, no, there's something more. There's something else. This isn't it. That's really the repeating thought, that this isn't it. This can't be it. There has to be more. And so that holy disruption That holy dissatisfaction, that disconnect with, that discontent with the things of this world, that could be a sign that God is preparing an instruction for you. He's getting you to a quieter place so that he can clearly speak to you. So now here's what begins to happen. You feel that discontent, that disconnect, but it's not just a matter of what you're disconnecting from. But what you're connecting to. Sign number two: there is a sudden hunger for his presence. Psalm 80:18: Quicken us, and we will call unto you. Now he's drawing you to deeper places. Now he's taking you to higher heights. There's this intensification of hunger for things like prayer, the word. Just this overall satisfaction with his presence. Now, we as believers, of course, should be satisfied in his presence. We should be lovers of his presence. But there are intervals where that intensifies. We, of course, shouldn't live as hermits disconnected from everyone else. But then there are seasons, moments where God will recapture your attention, where now there's this, almost this obsession with, I got to get to the prayer room. I gotta open the word. And this goes beyond that normal spiritual hunger that we should all be experiencing. This is, this is something deeper. I remember one summer in particular, all of my friends would invite me to go to the beach or go to the movies or go to someone's house and hang out. And sometimes I would take the opportunity, but for the most part that summer, I remember God just had me locked in. And I would, I remember getting phone calls because we didn't have cell phones to text back then. But I would get phone calls saying, hey, come here, come meet us there. And I remember just sensing this, this like, just no in my spirit. And I would take those moments to instead be with the Lord, be in his presence, not in a legalistic way. And I wouldn't encourage you to be legalistic. Of course, God wants you to enjoy fellowship. All I'm saying is there are those seasons, those moments of invitation where God invites you Into a deeper place, and that is one of the signs that that hunger that develops in you for that secret place, that intensification, that growing fire in your heart—that is one of the signs that God is about to give you an instruction. And then sign number three: you hear the same word repeatedly. This is what happens now. Isaiah 28:10. He tells us everything over and over. One line at a time, one line at a time, a little here and a little there. Now, of course, God can speak one big instruction, a vision, a dream, a prophetic encounter. Absolutely. But generally speaking, God speaks line upon line, precept upon precept. He will confirm his word to you. Now, once you know that God is speaking something to you, you absolutely have to obey. But the key is, once you know. God is patient with us. He understands our frailties. He understands that we have our own doubts and concerns. So he will confirm his voice to you. Yes, there's that drawing away into his presence, but once you're there, what does he speak? Line upon line, precept upon precept. There was a season where my family and I were settled in the state of Texas. And I remember at that point I said to Jess, let's get a plot of land. And we were looking at a plot of land. Let's build a house. We were getting ready to build a house and let's settle here. Even our ministry, we had plans to just base it there and only there and just grow something really big in Texas. And then out of nowhere, I start getting these very vivid dreams of Southern California. That's where I was from originally. And I remember thinking, huh, that was odd that I would have a dream like that, so vivid, so real, and a dream that I would actually remember and not forget. But I just kind of brushed it off. But then I kept having dreams of Southern California. And so I thought, this is odd. And there was that holy disruption, if you will, where I'm kind of tossing and turning, not able to sleep. And I'm saying, okay, Lord, Are you trying to tell me something? And then God would confirm again and again, sign after sign after sign after sign, including my daughter one day waking up and telling me that she had a dream that we lived in Southern California. My brother, Steven Moctezuma, who many of you know, the worship leader, his son just one day out of the blue blurts out, we're moving to California. And they said, what are you saying? Who told you that? He said, nobody told me that. But we're moving to California. Confirmation after confirmation. In fact, I was eating at a restaurant when the manager walks in. The first thing he says to me, he points his finger right at me and says, what are you doing outside of California? And so God sent signs to myself, to my wife, to my team. You're going to notice a pattern. You're going to notice a consistency. You're going to notice that something just keeps popping up again and again and again. And don't ignore it because that could be one of the signs that God is speaking to you. Like, it's really interesting. You'll notice he begins to speak to you through sermons, through conversations. Maybe even you're watching TV and something comes on that is so specific it's just too odd to ignore. Now, now, to be clear, God speaks primarily through his word, and we don't go chasing signs, but God will send signs your way when he is often trying to speak to you. Sign number 4, there's this gentle conviction, never condemnation, conviction from the Holy Spirit. John 16:8 says, and when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin and of God's righteousness and of the coming judgment. So not just sin and judgment. Yes, those are often what the Holy Spirit will convict you of, but also of righteousness. Not just what you shouldn't be doing, but what you should aspire to be. and what you should try to do. So the Holy Spirit shows you God's holy standard, righteousness, and he calls you upward toward that. That is the conviction of the Holy Spirit. And he begins to call you upward toward the things that God is calling you. You sense this inner nudging from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, and especially if you're resistant, it's almost like a sorrow. Don't grieve the Holy Spirit, the scripture says. that you begin to feel this holy ache in your heart where he's not just convicting you about the path that you should take. Watch this now, this is important. He's convicting you about certain things that you need to correct in yourself. Because before God can give you the instruction, before God can take you to the next place, he must purify you. Every level of instruction comes with a measure of purification. Think of Isaiah. He sees the Lord, he's about to receive the prophetic word, and he's cleansed. Moses has a holy encounter in the presence of God before he receives an instruction to be a deliverer to the people of Israel. And so there's this season of preparation to begin to deal with things, mindsets, attitudes, and God begins to convict you in regards to the path he wants you to walk. And he begins to convict you, that is, purify you in regards to the things that you need to correct before you can take the next step. That instruction comes with purification. Here's sign number 5, and sometimes this can be painful. He removes the noise. In Psalm chapter 46, verse number 10, we read, be still and know that I am God. Before you can know, Before that revelation can be given, you have to be still. And here's the reality. We're not so good at being still. So God has to remove things from us sometimes to get our attention. Think about Jonah and how he tried to run from the call of God. So God sends a whirlwind from heaven to destroy his means of disobedience. God loves you too much to leave you in mediocrity. Amen. God loves you too much to leave you to yourself. And so God will begin to remove maybe a relationship that's been distracting you. God will remove maybe a certain level of success that's caused you to become self-reliant instead of dependent upon the Holy Spirit, causes you to forget your need for God. God's not against these things. Success or relationships are things that bless us. But when those become distractions, They begin to become strained. And this helps us to refocus on the Lord. And this may actually be why you feel lonely. It's not that God is being cruel and putting you in this place of isolation. It's that who you're becoming isn't meant necessarily for the noise that you're around right now. And so God will bring you to this place of deep spiritual focus. He Cause you to be still, slow down, pay attention, and know that I'm God. Sign number 6 may surprise you because it can seem so out of place. Like, really? That's what happens when God is about to speak to me? I'm about to receive this divine instruction? Yes. Sign number 6 is that there is an increase in spiritual resistance. Think about Acts chapter 2. In Acts chapter 2, the Holy Spirit comes upon the church. And the power of God moves. They're filled with fresh power from heaven to go and spread the message of the gospel. But by Acts chapter 4, the church is already being persecuted. There's already this resistance, and they pray again and have to receive this fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit to continue to do what they need to do. And this may be where you are. This might be why you feel like everything is so chaotic right now. This might be why you feel like you're trying to grasp for something stable, something familiar, something that gives you some sense of direction. And maybe you're being attacked from every different place— financially, in your relationships, there is strain, in your mind, in your heart. Even when you pray and read the Word, there seems to be this resistance, this distraction, and something's keeping you from moving forward. This spiritual warfare, this spiritual activity around you is a sign that God is about to speak to you or take you to this new place that he has for you. Okay, now here is that seventh and final sign, and this is perhaps the most important sign to look for. It is the reason why so many believers will go years without hearing the The voice of the Holy Spirit, even though he's constantly speaking to them. Look at this. 1 Kings chapter 19, verse number 11. Go out and stand before me on the mountain, the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, But the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And the voice said, what are you doing here, Elijah? Not in the earthquake, not in the wind, not in the fire— in the whisper. So many believers Are standing by waiting for that big dramatic sign that God is speaking to them. They're standing by waiting for the heavens to split, the voice to boom. But God doesn't speak always with thunder. Sometimes He speaks in a gentle whisper. Right now, you probably already know. Here's the thing. Here's the thing. You probably already know. That God is speaking to you. You probably already know what he's saying. There's just layers of doubt, layers of shame, layers of confusion, layers of overthinking all over that. But if you cut through that noise, you get right to the heart of the issue, and you, you listen in for what the Holy Spirit is speaking. You know deep within your heart what he's already whispering to you. Sign number 7 is that gentle Whispers. So precious Lord, I pray, who knows that you're speaking to them, who understands now that you've been preparing them for the assignment ahead. And I ask you, precious Holy Spirit, to continue to speak line upon line, precept upon precept. I pray for confirmation of your word and boldness to act upon what you've spoken. Help them to be aware of the signs that you're speaking to them. Help them to be still, to be quiet, to slow their pace, to focus, to pay attention to when you're speaking. Help them do it, Lord. Help them to hear your voice with such clarity that they are confident in your voice. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. I want you to say it out loud if you believe it. Say amen.
