Are You Prepared for Next Year?

Nathan Thibodeau (Contractor Coach Pro) presents a short YouTube talk promoting the Contractor Strategy Conference (registration deadline ~Nov 12; conference starts Nov 18). He outlines end-of-year questions for construction company owners to assess and plan across leadership, culture, processes, HR, financials, accountability, marketing, sales, training, technology, and recruiting so they can enter 2022 with a concrete plan.

Foreign. Hey, everybody. Coach Thibodeau here with Contractor Coach Pro coming to you on this fall Tuesday afternoon. I see leaves covering the ground out there everywhere, and it's a little bit chilly, hence the vest today. But I wanted to talk to you guys a little bit about Contractor Strategy Conference. Now, here's the reason why, number one, it's got limited space and we do have some spots available, and registration for it is going to end soon. I think we're talking about November 12th. And the reason is because the conference is actually going to start November 18th. Okay, so I've got some details for you in a link that I provided that hopefully is showing up on this live. But I also wanted to provide some additional value to you. This the reason why this thing is so important and why the Contractor Strategy Conference is unique. So first things first. You owners, managers, leaders inside the business, okay? Are you on track? In other words, when you started your business and you had these dreams and these aspirations and these visions, are you on track to accomplishing those things? Because one of the things I do know and that we've definitely seen over the years is that as owners begin to see some success in their companies, we begin to hire some people, create some capacity for ourselves, and maybe we find ourselves with a little bit of time. Idle hands are the devil's plaything, right? And on numerous occasions, I've seen owners who've created some success in space for themselves and they begin to get really distracted. Now, all of a sudden, we're going to buy a rolled metal machine for gutters or fabricating metal roofs. We're going to start doing spray foam and insulation, we're going to start doing windows, and we begin all these initiatives to. Because sometimes we lose touch with our original dream and the vision that we had for our company. So strategy Conference, okay, Are we still engaged with that? Is our dream still speaking to us? Are we still inspired by it? Are we still chasing after that thing? And if we're not, how do we do that? How do we re engage with the inspiration that we had as an entrepreneur to begin with? How can we surround ourselves with some people who might be able to encourage us who maybe walked that path before? So engaging with our dream and our vision of our business is something we need to take a look at at the end of the year. And as we start to think about 2022, our leadership. How's our leadership doing? Do we have leaders? Do we need leaders? Are we as leaders, developing leaders? And are the leaders we're developing, developing leaders as well, as we try to take our business to where we want to go, next question that we have. Strategy conference. Once again, is our culture? Are we the people and the company that we want it to be? Do we have the personality and the attributes? Are we benefiting one another, our clients and the community in the way that we want to? We should be asking ourselves these questions. We should be analyzing these things at the end of the year. Processes. How did our processes do this year? Did we find some holes or some gaps? Did our processes do great? Do we need some more processes? Or do we need to improve the ones that we have in some way or another? We need to analyze the processes we have, how they did, and then thinking about next year. What process, what enhancements or additions do we need to make to those things? We need to think about things like our HR structure, our human resource management. I know a lot of people maybe roll their eyes and I might even be one of those folks, but human resource management is the way that your company interacts with your team and your employees. Does your HR structure and strategy coincide with your company's core values and your culture? Do we need to freshen up our employee handbook? Do we have an employee handbook? Do we have standards and practices? Are there things we want to offer our employees going forward that we don't have now? Our financial structure? Do we have numbers that we can analyze? Do we know what they are? Do we know if they're real? What kind of money do we need to spend next year to hit our goals? In light of those dreams and that vision that we were talking about a minute ago, our accountability. How are we doing on accountability? Do our people have a clear understanding of what's expected of them? Are they striving to meet those things? Do we have standards? Do we need to improve those things, grow them? Do we need to communicate them better? And. And then what's the methodology for making people, making sure people are doing what they're supposed to be doing, not just for the success of the organization, but for their own success. Do we need to improve our accountability and communication inside of our business? How did it go last year? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but quite frankly, I want to offer you some value. So even if you don't happen to go to strategy conference, you're learning some things, hopefully, that you can use in your own end of the year meeting coming up, even though it should be a strategy conference. Shameless plug here. How about our marketing strategy? How are we doing in our marketing? Are we Hitting the right targets? Are we getting the kind of leads that coincide with our ideal clients? Do we need to improve and expand our marketing in order to hit the goals that we're setting for ourselves next year? Do we need to adjust some of the ways that we market? Do we need to create a marketing champion? Do we want to bring some of that marketing in house? Or do we want to export that or outsource that to some experts in the industry? How about our sales strategy? Everybody loves talking about sales. We love talking about how we're doing with it. Our closing percentages, do we have that data? First of all? Second of all, is the message that we're portraying through our sales and through our sales process as being well received by the people we're talking to? How did our sales do last year? Where's it at now? What improvements do we need to make for 2022? How about our training strategies? Do we feel like we have people that don't really know what they're doing? Do they need to know more about their jobs? Do we have a good methodology for doing that? Have we given them resources that they can turn back to in order to get questions answered? Or is your phone constantly ringing with people who have questions over things they probably should already know? How about our technology strategy? Are we properly utilizing all the technologies we have? Do we need to add additional technologies? Do we need to put somebody in charge of some of those things? How did our technologies do for us? Are we automating the big buzzword for everybody, right? Are we automating correctly? Have we automated enough production? Is production delivering the things that our people are promising in the field? Are our customers experiencing that awesome feeling and experience that we want them to experience? And if they are great, can we make it better? And if they're not, how can we get there? Recruiting, hiring and onboarding, right? Staffing. We have a lot of people that ask us about those concepts. Do we know how many people we need? Do we know which people in our company is at total capacity and we need to add to those numbers. Do we know which people have some capacity that maybe could take on some more responsibility? So right there, I kind of quickly lined out probably the major areas of almost every single construction company that's out there. And the way that and the fact that we need to analyze those things in light of where we're headed now. Last but not least, a little bit of secret sauce on this component is the idea of the mechanism that we use to weaken and and week out track what we need to track, hold the right people accountable and get the things done that we need to get done so that we can find ourselves successful at the end of 2022. 2022 saying yay, we did it. So just a couple of quick words if you plan on doing this on your own, awesome. More power to you. Please watch this video and keep some of those things in mind.
