Big News for Contractors!

A recorded YouTube conversation announcing a new partnership between Contractor Coach Pro and American Contractor Media (formerly American Contractor Show). Participants (Jim Johnson, John Dye, Nathan Thibodeau, and Graham Dessert) describe why they partnered, planned joint activities (new summits, operational support, coaching), shared mission to better support contractors through education and leadership, and an explicit goal to reduce contractor failure rates from ~70–80% in the first three years toward under 10%.

Of Contractor Radio. And I got some guests here today. Got some guests. And we've got John. Yeah, you're. Get your guest today. Like, this is still Contractor Radio for a little bit. We'll get there. And so I've got John Dye from American Contractor, the brainchild behind American Contractor Show, American Contractor Summit, and, and just all things media. We've got Nathan Thibodeau, the lead coach, and really the head coach here at Contractor Coach Pro. And then we've got Graham Dessert. And we're not going to tell anybody why he's here yet, but we'll, we'll tell him in just a few minutes. So if anybody was paying attention yesterday and they saw kind of some of the American Contractor stuff, they're going, they're going to know what we're talking about. But I, we, we have a, A, a new partnership, right, John?
That's right. We do. We sure do. So partnership. I think it's amazing. Partnership.
Yeah. So we're, we're, we're, we're going to join up. I'm gonna, I'm gonna help. I hope American Contractors show from a strategic and business standpoint so John can continue to pursue what he's all about, which is educating contractors and providing some of the best content and media out there in our industry. And I'm excited to help you, man. I really am. What is it that made you want to do this? Why, why, why are we doing this together?
So for, for me, like, the reason the American Contractor show and American Contractor brand even exists is because I have a huge passion for our industry and for helping contractors become better, more elevated, more educated, and bringing them the best content. And that's the main focus. I tell my team all the time, like, hey, like, our goal is always to bring the best. And it's not about selling more sponsorships. It's not about trying to monetize so much on this, as much as it's about always maintaining that integrity and that level of realness that the industry really needs to hear. I don't want to, you know, I want to keep it real, keep it positive, be about the good and help everyone else achieve the good in their lives. And that's the entire mission of this brand. There's nothing else that we really want to do other than find ways, unique ways to use our talents and abilities and these things that we're gifted with in a way that can help the industry. And this is what God's given us to do it with. This is our tool.
Yeah, it was. I have to admit it kind of caught me off guard. Whenever you call, you call me really early too, by the way. He called me like 7:30 in the morning and I was like, why is John Dyke calling me at 7:30 in the morning? And you threw it out there that there was an opportunity to become a partner with you, to do this. And at first I was a bit hesitant, to be honest. And the reason was, is just timing wise, like, I wasn't something I was planning on. We have all these things that we're after. But as we talked more, I started to realize how aligned we are with that particular concept. This idea that we're focused first on the contractor.
What can we do?
We got them at an event there, so we'll give them a second. What's going on? All kinds of stuff.
There's a lot of going on here.
We're at a conference where we're at. I don't know if we. I don't know if we said that at the start.
Yeah, these guys are at the Wind the Storm conference. So we got that going on in the background, I guess. Is it.
Is it.
Mayweather? Floyd Mayweather.
All right.
Mayweather.
All his time and goofed up all this Floyd money.
Weather used to be pretty. Floyd, Pretty boy.
All right, we're good. We can go now.
All right, cool. So that's our whole thing too. This isn't a financial thing. This was something that I kind of wanted to do whenever I first started to just help contractors grown into something even more than that. But we've never lost that aspect of things. Like, yeah, we're a business and we want to stay in business, but the contractor comes first. And so that alignment with you, John, was really big.
And.
And we want to continue to do that type of thing for contractors. And I think you guys do something for us that we weren't real great at, which is our reach. We want to have more reach and then be able to share what we've learned over these last eight years. And really with all of our coaches, about 120 years worth of combined experience sharing that with contractors and some other new ways that we're talking about doing. I can't really divulge all those just yet, but we're excited to. To bring those together. So, Nathan, before I go to Graham, you got a chance here for the last few days to hang out with the American contractor guys. What's it been like? And just so everybody knows, Nathan's audio is just a little bit off, so he doesn't really speak in this kind of high pitched chipmunk sound. So go ahead.
Or does he.
Thanks for qualifying that. People are going to be like, what is this kid 12?
What's going on?
No, it's, it's been awesome. It's been really awesome spending some time with John and his team and even our guy, we brought out Paul and just watching just the mesh and the, and the merger of ideas and excitement and commonalities and then even watching the way that John and Priscilla interact with the rest of the industry and some of the alignments and the relationships that they have and how similar they are to ours and how just seamless it really, it really has been. And ever since the announcement yesterday, we have just had droves of people coming up and congratulating.
Oh, So Nathan's feet like now. We lost his voice a little bit there. Yeah, you guys got a little bit of lag going on. There's a lot going on at the college. So. So let's talk to Graham for.
Jim. We might be able to put them on.
We're gonna, we're gonna turn it down.
I, I got him on mute. We're good, we're good. You guys are on mute. You're. You're great. Let's talk to Graham for a second. So Graham, when, when John brought this up to me, it was right before the sales transformation groups event and I was going to speak there and John, John told me you were going to be there. He's like, hey, he's going to be there. I'd like you to talk to Graham and see what that looks like to possibly get involved with American Contractor Show. And I was aware that you had sold your roofing business or at least your share in that roofing business, and you were looking at new opportunities. And I got to hang out with you. And I got to hang out with you quite a bit more than I've ever gotten a chance to before and find out a little bit more about you, what you're after, your passions, and you really are passionate about the human being, like the human being themselves from a coaching standpoint, a leadership standpoint, a health standpoint, and you saw some opportunity here to possibly help American contractor show take that next step from an operations standpoint, a leadership standpoint, and really just helping us get this thing a little bit more formalized and from a, from a business and operational side. So what do you think? Are you excited about all this?
Oh, dude, I'm definitely excited. And I got to tell you that, you know, back at the end of January, I Just. I got a. Just listening to your gut and, you know, listening to just, you know, just things that get put out there. And I just. I got this word that I, you know, it's just time. Time to exit out of Roofing 101 and, you know, is a business that I've spent, you know, 12 years building. And so that was a very tough decision to make, you know, personally. But I do know that at any time that you close the door or you exit out of something, there's things that open up. And so I didn't have a plan. I knew it was time to exit and that the plan and the strategy and the alignments and all of that thing would. Would happen. And so I made the decision to exit, which. Which will be official here in the next, I would say two weeks. You know, I have a. A flight to Phoenix to meet with my partners the week of the 12th. And so when I do that, you know, then, you know, all of, you know, all of the future will happen. But, you know, John. John called me out of. Out of the blue, you know, on a Wednesday. I think it was just. He just called and was like, hey, this is what's going on, you know, you know, balance claims sold. And in the process, you know, I've. I bought, you know, American Contractor show and I'd like you to be part of the team. And I was just like. But just out of the blue, you know, I was just not, you know, much like you. Jim just came out. I came out of nowhere. And so I had to think about it for a second. You know, first of all, I love John, you know, and I respect him as a man and as a person and, you know, what he stands for and what he does. And so I was like, you know what, John? Like, I'm going to honor your request and I'm going to take some time and really think about this. And so, you know, I talked to my wife and here's the thing. John, John and his wife came out to Carlsbad not too long ago. And, you know, we went to lunch. Like, my family and him and his wife, we went to lunch. This was, you know, back in February. None of this was even on the table. And in fact, I think at that point, I don't even think I told John that I was exiting out of Roofing 101 at that point. He didn't even know. So I got to meet his wife and spend some time with him, you know, at that point. And so I was like, look, man, I'll honor This, you know, and I thought about it and thought about the. The future of, you know, what could be for the industry. And, you know, I was like, yeah, I'm in, man. I'm in. And then. And then, you know, came to thing with you. You know, he mentioned. He called me one day and was like, hey, actually I've been speaking with Jim and Jim's going to be at the sales Transformation group retreat, so that we got to spend some time together there too.
Yeah. And one of the things was I found out how aligned we are with our viewpoints on what it takes to be a leader, what it takes to be a good husband, and just generally a good person. And it was refreshing to hear some of that. The guys realized they're not on mute anymore, so that's good. I wanted to make sure that they were. I think they couldn't hear us talking, so I wanted to make sure they could hear us talking. Guys, I could not. I could not be happier about this partnership. The people that are involved in it, what we're going to do together, how we're going to help contractors in this industry, our whole thing. The reason we're doing all this is 70 to 80% of home services contractors go out of business in the first three years. And a lot of that isn't because of their skill and ability to sell or to install. It comes down to the ability to lead and run a business and understand that fundamentals that go along with that. And I don't think it's fair, to be honest with you. I think they get caught up a lot in chasing shiny objects all the time about what's the next thing and this thing and that thing. Instead of really understanding what the foundation is of running a business and the order that those things happen. And we're all in alignment on that. We've had these talks and conversations about that, and I'm super excited about how we can can spread that word even further and wider and take that from 70 to 80% and hit this goal number of seeing it be less than 10%. Want to see less than 10% of contractors go out of business because they don't have the information they need. And I think with this team can make that happen. And I'm excited.
Dude, you moved over to the next window.
Guys, you there? We can hear you guys. No worries.
Can't hear anything now.
Oh, you guys can't hear anything.
My laptop. So I don't know what's. What's being said.
Yeah, we can't hear anything.
So you Guys can't hear us at all. Okay, I'll. I'll speak for them. I'm not scared to talk. We've had lots of conversations. This has gone really fast, but really well. We're super excited about it. And we're going to be bringing some new summits to folks that they don't know about yet that I'm uber excited about. Just there. There's going to be one conference that's never been done before, and that's going to be super powerful. We've got some other ones that they haven't really been done quite the way we're going to do them. We want to make sure that whatever we do is practical. You come, you get something that's valuable, you take it away, apply it to your business, and it goes well. So there's. There's just a ton of stuff we're going to do. Can't wait to share it with you guys over the next few weeks. And we look forward to this partnership with American Contractor, who is trying to do all this from a show. And I want to thank them for hopping on and doing it there. This was a thing that I just gave out today, and I wanted to make sure it got to our crowd just as much as the American Contractor crowd. I hope everybody's excited about it. I can't wait to serve you guys even more. And if you haven't checked it out yet, check out contractorcoachpro.com check out American contractor show and actually American Contractor Media. That's the new name of the company. And it's because we're going to be doing a lot more for you guys than just a show podcast. You can hear us now. All right, good, good.
Yeah.
John went over there and handled the technical difficulties, it looks like. John, I was just saying, hey, man, we are super pumped. We're excited about the things that we're going to be doing together and, and, and welcome aboard, man. I can't wait to get you, like, involved with the rest of the team. And now we can. And now we can't hear them.
And I think.
I think from my end, one of the things that I'm really looking forward to is just serving in a. In a different way.
We're thrilled, dude. We're so excited. The whole.
I don't know what's going on.
So it's cut out. It's cut out again. So I'm looking forward to serving in a different way. I know John. John has this. He put together the media company. There's a lot of Summits that we've, we've been talking about putting together from a contracting standpoint, from a business standpoint. One of the things I'm looking forward to and one of the roles that I could play in this is more on a personal level, you know, helping people on a personal level, which, you know, all the, all the things that I've gone through in my life I won't dive into now, but I can take the experiences that I've had personally and bring them.
Sorry. There's a lot of announcements going on.
To help other contractors in both their, you know, if I can help people in their personal life, it actually helps them in their business life. So I think that's one of the things that I bring to the table as well as I think Jim, we can talk about my role and just helping direct some operations within the American contractor media. So that's pretty much what my role is going to be. So people understand.
Yeah, we're gonna work on processes and systems just the same stuff. We coach with our own contractors and getting things organized, getting things into a very easy to follow format so that anybody that steps in can, can perform those roles and grow leaders. Grow leaders with John and his team, new folks in. Because with where we're headed with this, it's going to take more people to achieve what we want to do because we got to create capacity. And I'm excited to just empower you to lead that. I know you know what to do there and that's super cool.
Yeah. One of the examples, one of the things I bring to the table is within, within roofing 101, we've hired well over 150 people within the last year. We opened up multiple locations. We've promoted, I believe well over a dozen people. We've had over 36 people within the last five years leave and start their own companies. So that type of a culture, it's a high growth, high development and high leaders developing leaders culture is what I'll be bringing to the table with American Contractor Media and Contractor Coach Pro.
Yeah, I'm super pumped about that part with American Contractor show, but especially with Contractor Coach Pro. I think you bring a different component to this from that personal perspective and growing as a human being and really achieving this high impact, high performance type of lifestyle. You've done some amazing things there. I've been super impressed with like just watching you. One of the things I'm like just like noodling around in my head like how do we create like this American contractor, like get in shape thing. How do we take care of ourselves? Because we tend to not live the greatest lifestyles all the time. Because we're running a thousand miles an hour all the time.
Yeah.
And I'm excited to see what that might look like and share.
Yes. So I will interject one quick thing for you guys listening. You know the word or O. R? It's not like that's one of the bad words because, like, we're conditioned to think you have this or this. You can have this or this. Well, one of the words you can replace or with is and how can I have a great marriage and run an awesome business? How can I have great relationships with my kids and run a great business? How can I be physically fit and run a great business? So that's a lot of what I will bring to the table and what we'll talk about.
That's awesome. Cannot wait to share that with our contractors and get you on some of our shows and some of what we do as outlets to contractors to help them not only just run a great business, but be great people. And that's what we're all about here. So, guys, I know that you're having some technical issues there with all the background noise and all that other good stuff. I am super pumped to have you on the team. Cannot wait to get you involved with everybody else. And we look forward to serving you as both American contractor and contractor coach pro. Thanks, guys.
