A short coaching monologue (YouTube) where the speaker—self-described ‘car guy’—uses driving analogies (everyday driving vs. race-car driving) to explain that leadership is a distinct, advanced skill set. As businesses scale and teams grow, improving leadership becomes central because owners/leaders increasingly work through people; without developing leadership skills, leaders can inhibit their business’s progress.

And for those of you who know me, you know, I'm a car guy, and I really, really like car analogies. So I was thinking about the concept of leadership and how it's a subject that's covered. A lot. A lot of people talk about leadership. A lot of people talk about how important it is. A lot of people try to. Try to really proliferate on leadership and teach on. And so in thinking about the concept of leadership and your strategy, one of the things that occurred to me was this. For those of you who have kids, right, and for those of you who have kids who are driving, okay, your kids are learning the fundamentals of driving, and they're driving whatever you guys may be allowing them to drive. Maybe it's the family minivan or suv, maybe it's a sedan of some kind or something like that. Maybe it's a little more fun. But most of us probably wouldn't take our teenager and stick them in a race car. Is driving a race car driving? Yes. Is it the same as learning how to drive on regular streets? No. And the reason is, is that driving race car driving is an enhanced and different skill set. And so the reason why leadership is so important is that as you owners and leaders and directors inside of your business, as. As you guys build your businesses, working on your business starts to look a lot like working on people. So I might not necessarily be building an estimate, or I might not necessarily be running materials or putting out an order. I'm actually working with and trying to help the people who do do those things now. And so the greater your leadership and the greater that skill, the better you're going to get. So as your business becomes faster and more efficient and more complicated and the teams begin to grow, if we don't build our leadership skill, we could be the one to inhibit our business.
