Townsend contrasts teaching a technique with helping someone discover their own process, and issues a challenge to individuals and leaders to create or grant ownership to unlock confidence, competence, and creativity.

Hey everyone, John Townsend here, newest coach at Contractor Coach Pro. So excited to join the team at CCP and really excited to bring you today's coaching moment. I thought, what better thing to start out with than the single greatest coaching I've received in my life. It was really early on in my professional baseball career, my first week, in fact. I met with our hitting coach and he stopped us and stopped me in the middle of our session and said, I want you to know I don't really care what you do, but I know I can help you, but it's your career, alright? And so on the surface level, you might be thinking, that sounds a little bit abrasive. Does this guy not really care about what I'm doing now? The fact is, and he went on to prove this over the years, the fact is that he cares so much that he was willing to invest the time to allow me to figure it out on my own. See, there's a big difference between knowing and teaching how to do something and then having an understanding of how you do something. This involves ownership, right? This involves taking ownership of really taking a deep dive into what am I good at, what am I not so good at, what do I believe to be true, okay? What's so special and unique about me, right? And then once I'm able to apply that to teaching and coaching and how to do something, that's when something really special happens. That's when we get to get the confidence and competence and that's when we start to become really creative. So I want to challenge you, right, whether you're a team member or you're a leader, to start finding different ways to either give yourself ownership of your process so that you can break through that ceiling and you can reach all that you're capable of doing. And as leaders, how can we give our people more ownership? Hope this impacted you today. Look forward to talking to you more. Peace Sa.
