Short transcript of a conversation (Jim Johnson and another speaker) about the concept of 'grind'—its costs (trade-offs with family/time) and how perception shapes experience. The speakers debate whether intensive effort is inherently a ‘grind’ or part of a meaningful journey, using Kobe Bryant’s workouts as an example.

It's like constantly grinding, constantly pushing, constantly. And I'm like, unless you are single without children, that's at the expense of somebody. Maybe that is your time, you know, to do some of those things. And it's one of the best ways to gain experience. So I think that there is a time and a place for the grind, but you just gotta be careful of it.
Yeah, maybe it's the tone of that word. Just to me individually, the tone of that word kind of sets me on edge, because I'm familiar with Kobe. I'm familiar with his workouts. I don't think he perceived them like we perceive them from the outside as a grind, but I don't think he perceived them as a grind. I think he perceived them as part of the journey, part of the joy, part of what it took for him to achieve what he was after achieving.
