Welcome to this week's episode of Contractor Radio. I am your host, Jim Johnson, also the head coach at Contractor Coach Pro, where we help contractors become better leaders so they can grow and scale their businesses and find that personal and financial freedom that they were looking for when they started their business. I'm super excited this week because we're going to bring you a very special episode. Last week I had the opportunity to go and speak at our Top Rep event in Wilmington, North Carolina, home of our marketing coach, Tommy Richardson. And we got to work with a couple hundred sales professionals out there, do an amazing event where people compete to learn what we call the Top Rep flight plan that helps them close more sales at higher percentages. And when we do this event, I normally started off with this conversation about mindset and the importance of personal growth and the effect it has on your mindset and things well prepared, planned. I've done it multiple times and I always pray the night before about this thing I'm going to do the next day. And this particular night I'm praying about, hey Lord, let me speak what's necessary for the folks tomorrow to help them find their own versions of prosperity and success to help set a tone for the event. And I just kept having this feeling like, hey, that's not the talk that you're going to give. And I wrestled with it all night. I didn't go to sleep until about 4 o' clock in the morning. I got about two hours worth of sleep, still felt unsettled. And finally I ended up just giving it, giving it up to God and saying, hey, well, God, I don't know exactly what I'm going to say today, but I'm just going to say what's on my heart and hopefully it's what you want me to say to this crowd of folks about where things might really be centered. So I hope you enjoy today's episode. It's going to be me on stage. So a little bit different than our podcast in the past, but I had our videographer, Paul, who does all the editing and everything for this podcast, really our true producer for this podcast. I said, why don't you click the record button? I don't know what's about to come out, but I think it might be okay. And based on the reaction afterwards, it turned out pretty good. And I give all the glory to God for that because it sure wasn't me. I hope you enjoy the podcast today. Take some time, maybe get in a quiet place and hear what God had to say to everybody. Hope you Enjoy the episode and we will catch you in the next one.
That's the whole thing for me. That's the whole thing for Chuck. That's the. The thing we like more than anything else is the texts we get the next day, the next week, the next month, the next year about the change, the transformation. What change? Something's going to radically change for several of you over these next two days. And my job is normally to come up here and talk about mindset. It's one of those things I get asked about a lot to come and speak about personal growth and mindset because people want to know how to be what successful. And successful is different for everybody. It's not the same. Everybody has a different version of success. And I got really lucky when I was younger. I had a good, positive influence in my life that was not my parents, because they weren't. And I will still tell that to their face today. But I had a neighbor across the street that saw something in me, and he gave me some fantastic advice. And for the first 34 years or so, 32 years of my life, it served me very, very well. That advice was this. Invest in personal growth and you will find success. And on a day, be disciplined about it every single day. Invest in personal growth and you will find whatever version of success you're chasing. It's all about your mindset. That was the last piece of advice. And so from that time forward, I started, like, diving into what was mindset all about? What is this idea of personal growth? What does success look like for me? And I chased it for a very long time. Most of that was driven by one single factor. I kind of alluded earlier that my parents weren't the end all and be all of my world every single day of my life. That as far back as I can remember, I was told I was a moron. I was stupid, I would never amount to anything. I'd be in jail by the time I was 20. I was worthless. I wasn't going to live beyond 25 years old from my parents, from the people that brought me into this world. So that one thing that kind of drove me and may drive some of you in here was to prove them wrong. My mind was set proving them wrong. My conversation today isn't what I normally do. I'm going to talk about personal growth and mindset, but I'm going to talk about something a little bit deeper. I hear most of the time when people talk about mindset, they focus on the mind, your brain, how it works, how synapses Fire, neuroplasticity, discipline, all these other things. I want to talk about the set part. I think that's the part that actually makes the difference, because that's the focus. Your mind is simply a tool. That's all it is. It's nothing more than that. It's like a hammer. It can be used for good or evil. It's this supercomputer inside of your head that you can shove a bunch of information into, and you get to choose how you want to use it or if you want to use it. The key is, what's it set on? And for the longest time in my life, it was set on something to prove somebody wrong and to benefit me. That was my mindset. But something radically changed for me. I hadn't experienced too much failure in my life. Tend to. When I get on something, my mind is set on it. I get very focused about it, almost obsessive compulsive about it, my wife would tell you. And it tends to go pretty well for me. And I think that that can lead to a lot of success stories out there in the world. This idea that I want something bad enough that I'll do whatever it takes. But where does the want come from? That's the thing I want to talk with you about today. Where does the want come from? Because my want came from proving somebody wrong. My want came from the things I wanted to achieve, the things I wanted to win. And because that was the focus of my want, It led me down a path that I didn't know was coming. It led me down a path of having a bookkeeper steal $585,000 from my business. I was egotistical. I thought everybody loved me and wanted to work for me. It was God's gift to this industry. Nobody knew it better than me. Nobody could do what I could do. Come on. I took a business from 3.75 million to 41 million in a year. Then I started my own. Did five the first year, 25 the second year. Nobody does that. Look at me. It was all a math equation because I had personal growth. I had a mindset of winning and competing, and I knew what it took to create what needed to be done to achieve the things I wanted to achieve, to prove everybody wrong and show everybody I was what they never thought I would be. And this bookkeeper stole $585,000 from me. But that was not the bad part of the story. You would think it is, right? You're like, man, what could be worse than that? Now, I didn't tell him. I was going to talk about this and I won't say who it was. He's here. But my best friend decided to go into business with her who stole the 585,000 and not stick with me. Think I was mad and I could show him on paper, like, man, this is the deal. It's right here. It's right here. They stole the money. You can see it. And you still would prefer to be with them and not me? God, I was pissed. And I blamed everybody else. The bookkeeper, him, the people that worked for me that left. And I didn't blame myself. It didn't take me long to realize how crappy of a person must I have been to prefer to work for a thief and with a thief instead of me. And that was a massive wake up call for me because it wasn't about mindset. It was about this thing I call Heartset. There's a guy that's written a book about it, and I like the way the word works. But what we prioritize in here is what we think about up here. So what do you prioritize? Do you prioritize making money? That's cool. There's not a problem with that. It can be done the right way, though. You prioritize making sales and have the highest closing percentage, that's cool. But it can be done the right way. You prioritize being on a leaderboard and winning, awesome. It can still be done the right way. And what I didn't understand back then, that I do understand now is that my heart set what I'm about, what I prioritize in here has a byproduct. There's a byproduct of that thing. The byproduct is what I start to think about. So what I'm prioritizing in my heart that I'm not sharing with anybody else, my mindset and all that stuff, I can share with anybody else all day long. What's in here? What's inside of us, man? Do you really share? Are you truly that authentic and genuine? I call bullcrap. I don't think there's a genuine or authentic human being on the face of this planet, to be honest with you. I think we all have something inside of us in our past that's dark, shameful, whatever, that we don't want to share with others. That's the part we need to fix. I got almost an amen right there. That's the part because when that gets fixed, your mindset changes. It's not about you anymore. It's about everybody else. You go from being selfish to selfless. And the byproduct is prosperity, not success. Those are very different things. Most people associate success with what the world tells us we're supposed to have. In my world, prosperity is what God tells me I will receive by putting others first. And it radically changed my life. There's. Do you know how scared I was to talk about this today? This is a tough thing. It's hard to get up in front of you guys and share this. I shared with a few people today. I slept two hours last night. I could not stop this. I prayed about it. I was thinking about it. I knew I was going to do my mindset thing. I'm like, stop lying to these people. That is a piece of it. Don't get me wrong. Personal growth and mindset are important, but it's the next thing. It's not the first thing. Your heart set and your spiritual growth will define your personal growth and your mindset and whatever that may be for you. All of you are on a different place in your journey where all that stuff is. And I'm not telling you that you have to do it or anything like that. You can absolutely operate off of personal growth and mindset. If that's not where you are today, that's fine. But I'll tell you this, if it's something that's poking at you a little bit, investigate into it. Because that was the problem with me. There was this something missing and I couldn't put a finger on it. I didn't know what it was until everything was ripped away from me. I loved that guy to death and never stopped loving him. I'm so thankful that we are friends again. Today. He came to me almost a little bit like, I don't know, like hey man, dude, that's been gone for a long time. I didn't even think about had been gone from a week after that happened because my life changed. We hope to change you guys lives while you're here, both in technique and sales knowledge. You learn understanding, you gather competition. You do that's going to make what you learn stick. But if you don't take anything else away from this whole entire event, take this away, we can be successful with the right mindset that is set on personal growth and success. Absolutely, 100%. There's no doubt about it. You can see it anywhere out there in the world around us. But that thing only lasts this long. That's it. At the end of our time that we all have on this planet, it's over. That thing ends, There's a finish line and nobody is going to remember it a hundred years past the time you go. And maybe I have all this wrong. Maybe I'm completely off base. Thank you. But think about this. If I'm wrong, how did my life impact those around me while I'm here and beyond? They may never remember me, but the impact that I have because I am selfless and I do love you and I do care for you and I want to serve you and serve you well, the impact that that would have beyond me if that was just all there was to it, is that okay? But what if I'm right? What if I'm right? Because there's a very big difference between a long life and an eternal life. A life that continues on past this gift given to us while we're on this planet. If you're going to prioritize making a sale, stop prioritize serving a client. Prioritize solving a problem, prioritize them before you. And you will be shocked at the byproduct of your closing percentage in sales that you make, referrals you get and the lives you impact and change, not just theirs, but all the people you will start to get to lead and be a part of their lives together. It is amazing. I am. It's surreal to me to have people walk up to me and say silly things like, oh my God, it's the legend. Like, are you kidding me? My wife would laugh if she heard you say that. I'm just another human being like any of you. There is nothing different about me, except for none of it is me. It's him. I challenge you all. I challenge you to take this life that you've been given and go further than what the world is telling you you need to do. Listen. Listen to what's going on inside. Because your heart is telling you that's the want. Remember I said, what's the want? This inside of you wants something and you keep trying to fill it with a bunch of things and stuff and money, but it wants something more. You got to dig into that for yourself and here's what you'll find. This is the the end of this. I got a 10 minute thing, but I'm done. Okay. We're going to be moving a little bit quicker. This is what you'll find. This has been the best part of this whole journey for me. Does anybody in here experience any kind of anxiety? Raise your hands. Come on. Fear, worry. I'm not going to lie. And Say I don't, but I have freedom from is not what drives my decisions. It does not make me emotional about what I'm going to do. I'm going to be disciplined each and every day to my spiritual growth and my heart set so that I can experience my personal growth for the right mindset. Because when my mind is set on the right thing to serve others before myself, the reward I get is prosperity and freedom. I don't worry. I have the freedom to come right up here and say what I'm saying today. Whether you like it or not. It is who I am and I'm not scared to share with you who I am. You should not be scared to share with others who you are. Serve them well, never stop. And hopefully if I am right.
We'Ll.
All share eternity together with that. Have a great top rep, guys. It's going to be amazing.
