The Power of Influence

A brief coaching monologue by Jim Johnson (head coach at Contractor Coach Pro) explaining that influence is the capacity to affect others' character or behavior (neutral in moral valence). He advises that to have positive influence one must consistently perform actions others aspire to, and suggests sharing wisdom publicly amplifies impact beyond one-on-one interactions.

Hey, guys, Jim Johnson here, head coach at Contractor Coach Pro. And I just got done with a coaching call and something really important came up that I wanted to share with you guys. The client that I was working with wants to become more influential. He sees the benefit of it and what it does for a business and a company. And so I asked him, I said, what do you think influence is? And he kind of paused like he didn't really have an answer. And then I said, well, if we want this influence, how does it come about? And so there's action that goes along with it as well. So influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character development or behavior of someone or something. I want you to notice something about that definition. It's not a positive or negative thing. It is just the capacity to have an effect. That effect could be positive or negative. That is really your choice and probably mostly based on your character. Now, if you're a person of good character, you want to have a positive influence on those around you. And so how do you go about getting that positive influence? And after really kind of thinking about it a little bit and wanted to give him some strong advice, what it really comes down to is consistently performing the actions that others aspire to and others that you want to be the influencer of. And so if you want to influence people in a positive way, then your actions must be those positive type of effects that you have on other people. So when you really think about that, how do you get that influence with people? You can have it one on one. It would be very small, very little impact. Or you can do something like what I'm doing today and share some of that wisdom, share some of that insight with others, and hopefully if you find value in it, it's positive. I've influenced you. I've helped you with your character, your development and your behavior, and you find value in it and it affects other people positively. So if you're looking on a way to get better and stronger at influence, make sure that you are consistent with your actions that others aspire to that you're looking to influence. That's our few seconds of just coaching information from today. I thought it was cool and I wanted to share with you guys. Thanks a lot. We'll talk to you later.
