How AI can be overwhelming

Jim James built an online course using ChatGPT and Simple Minds, but the tools generated so much material he froze with self-doubt. He's cutting back on his podcast, blocking time to work, and canceling meetings to focus on what matters.

Well, it's Sunday the 12th of November and it's 9 o'clock and I haven't got as far down the track as I had hoped. And I'm recording this because I'm about 3 weeks behind on putting the course together, and reflecting on how difficult it is to put a course together, and also that I have managed to confuse myself and complicate things by, you know, I think using AI, and that's created sort of more content than I could manage in the time frame I set aside. It also left me feeling as though what I know isn't as good, and so suffering a moment of self-doubt, really. So a couple of weeks have gone by, and I've done almost everything else except making more content for the course. I've made some rather fancy mind maps using ChatGPT through Simple Minds. Which is cool, but it's not going to help people that take the course. I've also decided to simplify the notes on my wall. I did have lots and lots of big notes, and now I just put very simply the names of 3 people that I know need this course. Had a bit of a fight with my wife this evening. She's, uh, understandably upset that I haven't moved this on. And, uh, you know, that's part of the pressure that we all have, is, uh, we're sustaining our families at the same time as trying to create new things. So for the first time in a long time, feeling just kind of like overwhelmed. But I do know I need to just get on and do things. So I have cancelled my meetings tomorrow and Unfortunately, on Tuesdays I have podcast recordings, and I think, you know, that's part of the problem because the podcast is taking a lot of time, and it's fascinating and exhilarating, but it's not generating any revenue. Even though I'm attracting lots of guests, I'm not attracting the same number of listeners and downloads that I'd like to make it truly profitable yet. So it's a Sunday evening, and I had a great day. Went to the gym, took my daughter to work. But sitting here Sunday evening, planning out the week, putting in my calendar the hours that I'm going to work on the course, and I need to just get it down. So I'm putting this here because if you're watching this and You're struggling to get your own course built, then you should know that you're not alone and that the solution that I'm working on, which may work for you, is just to schedule the time, simplify it, and then just, just do it. And we can always improve it later, but got to take my own medicine anyway. So Sunday evening, um, quick filing. Just so that we've got a record of the fact that this journey is making my feet hurt, but I know that I will get to the other side. Well, that's the problem. I'm not confident that it will be a great course, and that's part of the problem, that I've not made a course before and I'm questioning my own judgment. It feels like everybody else's courses are better than my own, and wondering whether this is the right thing to be doing. But I know that I need to help those people that come on my podcasts and my clients to do better. And if I send them out into the world to look, there are so many videos in so many places giving them so many bits of advice that it's impossible for them to get it in one place. So that's why I'm doing this. And I've also got some ideas and some ways that I know that not many other people know. So That's the mission. Gotta keep to it, but it's not always that easy. Anyway, so hope you are doing great what you're doing, and if you see this, know that, uh, the only way is to carry on. There's no going back. Good night.
