Jim James returns to the UK after 25 years abroad to launch a new venture and gets a personal branding photo shoot. A photographer explains how lighting and angles shape powerful images, while a stylist discusses clothing choices. Together they work to make sure the photographs communicate the right entrepreneurial message.
Today we've been doing a personal branding photo shoot, and the goal really is to help me to reposition myself as an entrepreneur who's been overseas for 25 years, come back to the UK and starting a new business. So I need to re-establish and refresh my, my look and my brand. So the positioning of the founder, how they are seen, how they present themselves, is really fundamental to the identity of the company.
I've been a photographer for about 20 years, so I can look at people's faces and work out what lighting works best for them, what camera angle works best pretty quickly. But photography, there's still a lot of power in the photograph. Still, image still holds a lot of power. I've always worked with a stylist. A stylist is just in touch with clothes. They know what's fashionable, they know what's going to work. I mean, that's their expertise. My expertise is a photographer, so they take all that responsibility off my shoulders.
So Jim is— for me, it's about understanding what he wants to create, the message that he wants to portray, and who he's looking to attract into his circle, which is the Silver Fox. He has a natural sense of style anyway. It's that I think people warm to outside of just listening to his voice on film or seeing his face.
Working as a crew, it's been great fun. We've had a lot of fun. We've also learned a lot about each other and about each other's disciplines. So we really look at this as an example of what people coming together and doing things on spec can create. And we've also got some potential business opportunities coming out where we could work together again.
