Jim James explains the difference between agency and in-house PR work. Agencies operate as profit centers where you're a creative service provider; in-house PR is a cost center tied directly to business outcomes. You can move between them, so start where it feels right and stay curious.

Hi, my name is Jim James and you are watching PR FAQ live from our studios here in Beijing at EastWest PR. Today's question comes from a listener who would like to know, is it better to work in-house as a PR person or in an agency? Which one is best for you? Things to think about in an agency. Like East West PR, you're going to be a profit center. Every consultant in an agency is adding value to clients and charging consulting fees. That changes the way that you're seen in the agency and it changes the way that you're seen in the marketplace. If you're in an agency, you're going to be surrounded with other creative people. An agency by definition is a group of people who are all similar offering creative consulting to their clients. That can be stimulating for some people. If you go and work in-house, you will be a cost center. You will be one of the, one of the costs that the company has that they take off of their sales. So it will affect how you are seen if you work in a PR agency or in-house. But if you work in-house, you can have a direct impact on the business. You can make a direct impact to sales, and you'll get to see that. And for some people, that's really very rewarding. Finally, just remember, you can start in one and change. You can go in-house or you can go to an agency and you can change later. The decision you take now isn't the only decision. The important thing is to get started in whichever one you want. Find it, enjoy it, and explore and keep your options open for later. Thank you for that question. If you've got a question for PRFAQ, you can tweet us. @EastWestPR, as you can see, or on our website, eastwestpr.com. I look forward to getting your question.
