Jim James outlines how to break into PR: start with your school's career counselor, then reach out to agency professionals offering to buy them coffee, and contact journalists directly to understand what agencies look for. Ask specific questions and be respectful of their time.

Hi, my name is Jim James and you are tuned into the PR FAQ being filmed here live at our EastWest PR Beijing studios. Today's FAQ comes in from someone who wants to know who should they talk to about a career in PR. Well, depending on where you are at life, the first people you could ask is the careers counselor. Every good school or university's got a careers counselor. So start there. Ask them what they know and who they can introduce you to in PR. If you're lucky, you might know someone who works in an agency already. If you don't, just call up and say, hi, I'm interested in a job in PR. Can I talk to somebody? Offer to buy them a coffee or lunch. Respect their time. But ask someone who's already in the industry to give you some guidance. Finally, the people that we all work with, journalists. So if you can, most journalists now have a byline and an email address on their articles on the web. Reach out to a journalist. Ask them to talk with you about what they might expect if they worked in an agency. So if you think about a PR career, find out who's already doing it. Talk to them and ask them sensible questions, and you'll probably get sensible results. So thank you for that question. If you've got a question for the PR FAQ, you can tweet us at @EastWestPR, or you can send us an email at eastwestpr.com. Thank you.
