UnNoticed Mastermind introduction

Jim James introduces the Wealth Builders Mastermind, a 12-month peer group for eight business owners meeting monthly on Zoom. Members follow strict rules, use the Gestalt protocol to avoid direct advice, and work through a structured agenda where each person gets 10 minutes to present a challenge and receive peer feedback.

Hi, my name's Jim, and I wanted to just, uh, share with you the opportunity of participating in the masterminds with my Wealth Builders Mastermind. And I'm going to be just sharing with you just some of the parameters for the mastermind in case you're interested. So first of all, this is a mastermind for business owners. The objective is to support one another with peer group sharing in a non-judgmental and supportive way. To be clear, we don't tell each other what to do. We listen and share our own experiences of what we've done in similar situations. So I will share with you about that. We've already had one forum going for over 12 months now, and it's proven to be really, really successful. I've run a large number of these masterminds over the years, and I know that peer group sharing and peer group support is really the number one way for entrepreneurs to learn and to grow their businesses. First of all, the framework. So here are some guidelines to keep us all together. We have to have these because if we don't agree in advance what the group will agree to, what happens is that people drift in and out. So We have some very simple guidelines, and it's just to make sure that we talk about at the beginning. So first of all, membership. The group is limited to eight because too many and not everyone gets a chance to share. Too few and there's not enough sharing. So membership is limited to eight per mastermind. Attendance: everyone commits to turn up every month, and we agree. when that's going to be, and each session is only 60 minutes long. We agree to turn up on time and to finish on time because there are 8 people with only 60 minutes. If you calculate how much money that really costs in terms of opportunity cost, it's quite an expensive meeting. So being punctual. The 4th element is Gestalt. So I mentioned that we don't tell each other what to do. The Gestalt protocol is really fundamental to the success of all masterminds, because we're not here to tell each other what to do, because we can't know everything about the situation that you're in. We only know what you tell us. And so when we share, we can only tell you what we know from a similar situation. And this stops people giving advice and maybe other person taking that advice and finding that it doesn't work, and then recriminations happen. If there's a disagreement in the group, then we agree within the group to resolve that, um, and as the facilitator, I would be the final arbiter. So far we haven't had that. Each meeting takes place once a month, just 60 minutes on Zoom, and we agree— for example, we have our current Wealth Builder Mastermind On a Wednesday, second Wednesday of every month from 12:30 to 1:30, for example. There's a presentation format which is structured, and actually what we have is one person is a coach and one person presents. The person that presents becomes the coach next time. In the first 8 to 12 months, I actually do the coaching and the facilitation because with my experience I can help with that. So presentation format, it's only a 10-minute presentation. I'll show you in a moment the the agenda. Emergency meetings can be held if anyone has an issue that they need to resolve. Happens sometimes, and then we're there for each other. Moderator role and the forum role— forum chair. So one person actually moderates, which is me, um, at the moment, to make sure that everyone gets their opportunity to speak, to share, to listen, and to learn. We have no phones for that 1 hour, and of course we're all sober, uh, as we should be on a Wednesday at 12:30. But just to be clear, no alcohol. And what we ask for is a 12-month commitment. That stops people dropping in and out. And also because what happens is in the first few months, people share at a certain level, level 1. Over time, people start to share with more vulnerability. They start to put in their own fears. They maybe share some More about the numbers, get closer to the truth. And level 3 is when people really start to show the real bottlenecks, their real emotions, what's really stopping them or what's really getting them going. So we have a 12-month commitment, then we review, and then people can leave if they don't want to stay on afterwards. 60 minutes. We have a confidentiality reminder. Everything that's said inside the group stays in the group. It's absolutely key that we can trust each other. We share highlights from the previous month, and then the coach will introduce the speaker. The speaker, the presenter, has just 10 minutes to share. Then we have 2 minutes silent reflection. Then each person will share on their own experiences of a similar situation for 3 minutes each. The coach will have introduced the speaker by asking Everybody the key question that the presenter would like to have answered. So a key learning in the group is that there has to be one central question, and the role of the coach is to make sure that the person presenting focuses on one key question to answer. We've all got many, many questions and many, many problems to solve, but we get the best results when we focus on one detailed question. Then the speaker, having heard 3 minutes from each of the other 7 people in the group— so they've, you know, got 21 minutes of experiences there— will have got some takeaways, and we ask them to share 2. And then we ask the group to share what the number one issue is so we can determine who's going to speak at the next. And then we agree who's going to coach that person. And then everyone shares a learning that they've had from the session, because we've all listened. We've listened to a presenter, we've listened to 7 other people sharing their own experiences, and then we have a one-sentence close. Very tight, very focused, and the results are really phenomenal, both in terms of the movement we're getting for people in their businesses. People are talking about systematization, they're talking about human resources, about people, they're talking about cash flow. They're talking about marketing, they're talking about outsourcing, they're talking about mergers and acquisitions. All manner of topics are discussed in the mastermind, and it's fantastic. So that's it. We've got the structure and we've got the agenda, which is also structured. This is about me. Uh, I'm an entrepreneur, have been for 30 years. I'm currently a podcast host and author. I've Still have a business. I co-founded the Entrepreneurs Organization, which is a global group of entrepreneurs. I founded that in Beijing.
