A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. This show is about you, not about me. I want to help you find practical, real world ways to dial in your health and mindset so you can finally lose that weight and feel strong and energized. Stop settling for less than your personal best. It's time to find out how to look and feel better than ever. And I'll be right here with you the whole way. We are diving deep today. So I did a podcast with Dr. Marisa Snyder on hormones, women's hormones and essential oils and it was awesome. And you're going to hear it soon. Not today though. And what happened after we hung up is we were somewhere. We were in Las Vegas together. I go, you know, gosh, I just feel like we went all the way from zero to 60 in three seconds, like, and didn't give them any warmup. Like, there's so much there. And we just went straight to the most advanced and I really want to deconstruct this whole thing with essential oils, starting with what the heck are they? How do you know if you're getting good ones? What should you be using? What can they do for you? And then looking at which one should you really have? How do you make over your house in your medicine cabinet and then get into women's hormones? And she's like, okay. And so we decided to do a three part series and we kind of did it backwards because we did the first one last and the last one first. But you know what? It's all good. You're going to hear the first one first and the last one last. So this is a three part series and this is the first part of the three part series. Now here's the deal. Subscribe if you are not subscribed yet so that you know when the second one drops and the third one drops. That is podcast speak for when it goes live. And because you'll want to, you're going to listen this one.
Go.
Okay, now what's next? Right? No one wants to be incomplete, so make sure you subscribe. And this one today is going to be really, what are essential oils? How do they work? Do they work? How do you know which ones to choose? How do you know if you're getting good ones or like what could be bad if you got bad ones? And you know, what are the top things that you can use them for? And this is why you want to listen to Dr. Marisa Snyder. So she's going to share her own personal journey as to how she really got into oils. But since that time, she has become my go to expert on oil. She wrote the Smart Mom's Guide to Essential Oils and now she's got her new book coming out, the Essential Oils Hormone Solution. Wait till you hear. I mean, when you hear the. The third part of this series on what you can do to help with hormone balancing, it is crazy cool. She also wrote the Dash Diet Cookbook. And for the past 10 years, she has been all over the place. She's like lectured for, I don't know, 30,000 people. I saw the picture. I'm like, geez, she's Marisa. That's amazing. So she's lectured all of our wellness centers, conferences, corporations on hormone health, essential oils, nutrition and detoxification. She's been on Dr. Oz, Fox News, Health, Mind, Body Green, and in many other publications. She's the host of her own podcast, essentially you. Her goal is very similar to mine to help empower women to become the CEO of their own health. And she is a functional medicine practitioner. She's written, by the way, those three books, but seven total Crazy Crazy. All right, so that's what we'll be talking about today. Now, before we dive in, I want to give a shout out to Fab Jewel, 55. Fab Jewel 55 says JJ is the best five stars and Apple Podcasts. I'm always excited when JJ has a new podcast. She is such innovative and right on information. I trust JJ and the guest she has on her show and try to implement the information I learned from her podcast. Well, I dig this for a lot of different reasons. So first of all, I love that title, humbly, she says, but the reason being my big goal is to expose you to just the greatest people out there. I think my favorite thing I have in life is just an amazing community of incredibly brilliant friends. And so I invite them all to be on the podcast. And now we're going to be doing series where I can go deeper into different subjects. But one of the things that I always insist with them is that we always have a great freemium, a great gift that we can give you and that we give you tips that you can put into immediate action. So you listen to the show, you get inspired, and you can take action. And that is super key. So I love, love, love that you said that, and I would love to shout you out next time on the podcast. So if you've not written a pretty, please, please leave one, and I will do a big shout out for you as well, and I really, really appreciate that. Dr. Marisa Snyder, welcome back to the show. I'm excited to be talking about all things essential oils with you.
Yes, jj, we are gonna get into it today.
Yes, we are. Now, full disclosure for everybody listening. Here's how this really went down, because I always like to pull back the. The kimono. So Dr. Mariza and I got on and we recorded this awesome podcast, and we were both probably a little bit, like, giddy, been a long day, but we were recorded this amazing podcast on cravings, metabolism, all this stuff. And then we were together in Vegas, and I go, you know, I feel like. I feel like we kind of dove into the deep end, and we need to first even talk about, like, what are essential oils?
How do they work?
Do they really work? You know, and then how can you use them in your everyday life? And then we can go and show them. It's sort of like, okay, I want to buy a car. You go right in the dealership, and you just start worrying about the financing when you haven't even decided on the car yet. So we're going to backpedal. That's why I thought this really needs.
To be a series.
So it's kind of crazy that we recorded number three, and we're going to start with number one. But we are going to. You're going to have three parts to this series, which is super cool. So today is number one. We're going to talk about essential oils, how they work, that they really do work. And then we'll talk next about what you want to keep in your medicine cabinet and how to use them. And then the Third one is all about cravings and metabolism. So super excited about all of this. And this is all in celebration of your new book, the Essential Oils Hormone solution. Yay.
Yes.
Yes. Very cool. I mean, you're a prolific, prolific author. But this, to me is your, like, crown jewel of your book. And for everybody listening, we've got a really cool cravings energy cheat sheet that you'll be able to grab along with all the show notes@jjvirgin.com hormone so, Marisa, let's dive in on this one. And again, I kind of went back to. I never really paid any attention to essential oils before. Someone brought them to me when my son was in a coma in the hospital and I saw like firsthand the power. This was the first thing he responded to. But prior to that, I thought it was something that you sprayed on your pillow or put into your bath and.
You can do those things. But what we are finding is that oils can be used in replacement for a lot of the over counter stuff that we're using today. And I think that's a lot. Why essential oils have become so popular is moms and families and women like yourself, warrior moms like yourself. We are looking for something more natural to use with our families. I just spent the last two days recovering from food poisoning, and if it wasn't for the oils, that would have been a much more crappy experience. So oils were the first thing we grabbed when it came to you. Well, bummer.
I'm so sorry about that. That's like, that's one of those very, very bad diet moves, right? So it's always one of those things whenever you get food poisoning. You're like, why didn't I have the, you know, tiramisu and the ice cream and the cookies? You know, why did I get the food poisoning? After? I was really good having the brussels sprouts.
It was. Well, it was a salad. It was a salad. And I ate. Of all the family, I ate a, like the most amount of salad.
And because you're being a good girl.
I was, I was, I was avoiding the sugar traps. I was doing all the good things and bam, I got poo.
All right, well, let's, let's start with the most basic 101. What the heck are essential oils? And I say this because someone brought me really great essential oils in the hospital. And then I like went out, you know, was running out of one. So I just went over to the store. Yeah, yeah, exactly. So, so what are they? And, and how do you know? You know how to get is, you know, what are they? And since, you know, part two of that is how do you know to get really good ones? Yeah.
So what are they? So they are really what I consider to be like the most ancient medicine. Well before the advent of modern medicine, we were even understanding what herbs and tinctures are. We had essential oils. And you can see research dating back to ancient China, ancient India, ancient Egypt, all over the world, where we harnessing the power of plants to really help create powerful changes in the body. And what they're defined as is they are volatile chemical constituents. So these beautiful secondary metabolites that we find on plants from the bark, stems, leaves, flowers, seeds of these plants all over the world, jj and we're utilizing those powerful chemical constituents to help support our biology, to help to support our bodies. So if you have a common cold, you can use oils for that. If you've got shoulder pain, you can use oils for that. If you have some digestive discomfort because you ate too much gluten or ate too much sugar, you can actually use oils for that. And those are. So what we're doing is we're harnessing those chemical constituents to work with our bodies. And what's so cool about plants, as you and I both know, is our bodies have always responded well to plants, particularly essential oils.
So how do you know? Because now that I knew going to the store that this isn't just something you're like, okay, I'll just grab this. How do you know when you have a really good oil versus. My friend was scoffing at me with what I bought. I was embarrassed. I got oil shame.
You got oil shamed? Oh, my goodness. I try so hard to not oil shame people, but it can be challenging. Well, the thing of it is, if you do want to use them for digestive issues, or you want to use them for neck pain, or you want to use them to boost your immune system, you want a high quality oil or you're not going to get the results you're looking for. And for me, when I'm educating about oils, I really want you. Jj, if you have a headache or you're dealing with sugar cravings, which I know you don't, let's just say, or you want to reduce stress levels because you're traveling or on the go, I want to make sure that what you're using is actually going to work. Now, if you're in a grocery store or you're in a Whole Foods, what you're looking for is a couple things. One that the scientific terminology of that oil is actually on the bottle. You're looking for the oils to be an amber or dark glass, like a dark brown glass with an orifice reducer, which means that the oils aren't going to be tainted by the environment. And the number one thing you're looking for is price. If you see that all of the oils are priced the exact same. So for instance, if a frankincense oil, which is very difficult to harvest and produce and test, so much goes into that oil, if it's the same price as a lemon or an orange oil, then you know that you're working with a company that is utilizing poor quality oils or it may not even be that oil altogether. So those are some things you want to look at on the shelf.
Wow. Well, isn't there any kind of like monitoring to know? You know, like how do you know when you're getting an oil how potent it is? What the. Like how do you know?
How do you even know? So the best way to know, just kind of like we do with everything else, when you're searching for that car or you're searching for the supplements, like we know that your supplements JJ are some of are the best supplements on the market because you've done your research, same kind of thing here. When it comes to oils, you've got to really go and do your research. So what you're looking for when you go to that website, that essential oil company website, do, because like organic, think about organic. If someone is doing organic produce, best believe they are going to tell you that they are spending the money to test for organic or they're doing everything to be organic. Same kind of concept with the oils too. The company that you're buying those oils from will tell you where their oils come from.
Right?
Because if all of your oils come from the United States, it's impossible because there are certain oils that can't even be grown in the United States. They have to be grown in Africa, they have to be grown in Guatemala, they have to be grown in France and India, wherever these oils are coming from. So one, are they disclosing where their oils come from? And two, do they third party test? Do they even test with someone else? Do they even talk about testing their oils? Because if they don't mention any of those things in the website like on that first page, then most likely they're not doing their due diligence.
And you're pretty much, this is so similar to supplements.
Yes, it is.
And, and it's one of my things, gets Me on a rant with supplements because people will go and look at price and I'm like, do you understand like that, you know, you do not want to buy cheap supplements ever. Like you do not want to buy. And it sounds like the exact same thing here. Now, what about. Because you were talking about getting them from different countries and I just think back to some of the issues we've had with some supplements coming out of China, just similar. Are there concerns like that with oils?
There potentially could be. You know, with the oils that I work with, the company knows their growers. They work with very specific growers. They have relationships with those growers. So it's a direct connection with them. Not only does that create sustainability practices, you're ensuring that you have better quality oils, but you really have really powerful quality control. And the thing of it is, if the company is testing those oils with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Spectrometry and chirality, all the tests that they do, you're going to be able to weed out and throw away whatever doesn't meet those standards anyway. But so as long as they've got the purification testing in place, even if it's a great harvest, even if it's a great grower, if something's wrong with that batch, it's got to go.
Yeah, that makes a ton of sense because these are, I mean, my gosh, you're sniffing it. It's going straight to your brain. You personally, you now are my go to expert on essential oils. How did this all happen for you?
Yeah, so a big reason why I'm writing this new book, the essential oils hormone solution is that I, like many women, I was dealing with a lot of chronic stress. I was very type A. And what was happening because of all that stress is I was chronically sick. I had colds and flus and strep throat, the whole nine. No matter what I did, no matter how many nasty tasting tinctures I drank, no matter how much yoga and green smoothies or whatever I was doing, I still got sick. I think it was seven times, seven to ten times a year. And a good friend of ours, the green smoothie girl, Robin Openshaw, was visiting me and she was tired that every time she talked to me on the phone or she visited me, I was sick. I had a cold, I had a flu, I had something. So she brought me this immune system blend that not only boosts the immune system but also takes out the germs too. And I started using that oil. Jj, I mean, every way you could use the oil. I was using it, I was drinking it, I was applying it, I was diffusing it, I was overusing it, but. And I learned how to use them a little bit better down the line. But what happened to me is that I did not get sick not one time in three and a half years because of that blend. It changed my entire life. And that's when I began to do the research. I was like, what is this stuff? What is these? What are these oils that are literally keeping me from not getting sick anymore? And that changed everything. It shifted everything I thought I knew about herbs, everything I thought I knew about staying healthy. And we began using oils pretty much for everything in our house.
So since you just basically said you ate them, you know, drank them, did all of it, what are the best ways to use these?
So the best ways to use them is actually, there's technically only three ways to use oil. So even if you own 100 oils or if you only own three, there's only three ways to use oils. And the first one is the most profound. You're going to get the most benefit, and it's the easiest to use. And I'm all about easy. I know you are as well. So that way, it's aromatic. So just simply breathing them in. By breathing them in, they go into the brain, as you mentioned before, straight into the limbic brain. That's the cool thing about our sense of smell, is it's connected directly to our sense of survival. So you are allowed to breathe in oils, and they go directly into the brain and go to work for you, especially for stress, emotional support and cognitive support, those big, big key areas that we want to focus for mental health. But also by breathing them in, it goes through the lungs, through the alveoli, into the bloodstream in less than 30 seconds, upon breathing them in, and they start doing the work for you in a matter of minutes. So aromatic is going to be the fastest and easiest way to use them. It's definitely.
I will share. That was one of the things we did with Grant. First thing was did that under. That's when I started to see his nose twitch. He started to, like, twitch. His eyes was. And this is, you know, kid in.
A coma because it was Frank. Was it frankincense? Jj I was. What oils?
I know Frankincense was one of them. We got these blends and, you know, there were so many things I wrote about them in the book. I wrote about all the things we did with Grant, and I know Frankincense was definitely one of them. Yeah, I know we use lavender on his cuts because he had so many of them.
So then topical. So I always say, just like that food poison incident that I'm recovering from, again, an area of concern. So if you've got a sore neck or a sore elbow, then you're going to apply them there. If you've got a tummy ache, digestive issues, apply it over the area of concern. If you've got a headache, again, you want to apply it over that area as well. And for me, I probably use topical more than anything. I love a great rollerball that I can just roll wherever problem is. So that was what I was doing. I had this roller blend, this immune system roller blend that I was rolling over my chest, I was rolling over my feet, basically anywhere that I could really help support my immune system. And I find that's what a lot of moms and a lot of families like to use. They love to use those little roller bottles where they can just roll them over their kids to help them go to sleep at night, to help their immune system, to help them with their tummy aches, whatever it is that you're treating your kid with. The last one is internal. So that is going to be taking them in a capsule, that's going to be putting them under the tongue, that's going to be adding them to a green smoothie or adding them to a shake, like a JJ shake. Those would be all the reasons. Now, the reasons why you would use them internal is if you're trying to deal with sugar cravings, or you're trying to stabilize blood sugar levels, or you're trying to fight an infection or a cold, or you're trying to deal with some more bigger systemic issue. So I always tell people when it comes to internal, you want to be really mindful about targeting a problem, and you may even want to involve your health coach or your health practitioner just because they tend to be pretty powerful when you use them internally.
Why is there. I've heard some controversy, but, you know, I've heard differing opinions on, you know, you shouldn't ever do them internally. And then I think of when I hear that, I think, but wait a minute. If you could use it topically, it doesn't make any sense at all to me that you couldn't use it internally. Absolutely.
So the concern around internal usage is that again, these oils are very potent, they are very powerful, and they're going through the digestive system. So the concern is that they're Going to irritate the mucous membranes. That's really the biggest concern. But a lot of research is demonstrating that we're really not seeing that happening. It's kind of an old school model without the real research to demonstrate it. If you're still concerned, I always tell people, caution is always great. And if you can still get the benefit from breathing them and applying them topically and you don't feel comfortable using them internally, then don't do it. Right. But if you're not concerned and you're seeing some really great benefits. You know, my grandfather has got pancreatic cancer and we have had him on an internal protocol for years now and we've had really great success with it. So, you know, it really depends on the circumstance. I believe I take them when I'm trying to do, you know, really reduce sugar cravings or any type of cravings, adding a drop of lemon and peppermint to a big, big glass or a big pitcher of water, I really don't see the problem in it. So I think it really depends on your philosophy. For me, I say just be cautious if you're concerned and have a very specific reason for using them.
And it's not like you're not sitting there and chugging down a bottle of essential oils.
No, I'm talking about when we make like a detox water infusion, we may do one drop of lemon oil in a gallon or two gallons worth of water. We're talking about a lot of a very small amount of oil that goes.
A long way before we leave today. And again, I want to remind everyone you can get the cravings and energy cheat sheet@jjbirgen.com Hormoneo but before we leave today, what are like top three, your top three benefits to using essential oils?
Absolutely. Number one, instantly reduce stress levels instantly. Instantly. Instantly. I mean that every sense of the word instantly. Again, when you're talking about breathing an oil in. And those very specific chemical constituents are designed to shut down the stress center of the brain instantly. And it's just two oils. It's lavender and bergamot. Those have both been scientifically researched in many, in multiple articles to reduce not only cortisol levels, your blood pressure and your pulse point in less than 30 seconds upon breathing them in. So just take a drop of each, rub your palms together, do three to five deep belly breaths, and there you go. That is instantly reducing stress levels. You know, I have flight anxiety. That is my go to combination for lowering anxiousness on a plane. Number two, boost your immune system. I know that you and I and everybody else in this world does not want to be sick. So if you just diffuse essential oils, I would even say an hour a day, you are significantly increasing your chance of not getting sick for the entire year. And my go to is just five drops of eucalyptus, two drops of melaleuca, a couple drops of clove oil in your diffuser. Diffuse it an hour or two a day. You can also turn that into a little roller blend. Take it wherever you go. We travel with that boosting blend everywhere we go. So that's number two is boosting your immune system. And then number three is using it as a powerful sleep aid. So often we have a difficult time falling asleep at night, all that mental chatter, working throughout the night. And if you just want to shut the brain off, my go to blend is just, I would say if I was doing a diffuser blend, it is a, it's four drops of lavender and four drops of vetiver. That power combo, we call it the liquid Ambien and it will just knock you out.

And this one came from Marcy, who said, jj, what did you do with your son? Which with essential oils and when he was getting better. So here's the thing. When my son was in the hospital, so my son was hit by a car and left for dead in the street. This is all detailed in my book Warrior mom, which we'll put a link to in the show notes. And what happened was I went to the hospital. You know, the whole story is in there. But basically went to the. Went to the first hospital, airlifted him to the second hospital, and he was in the middle of the pediatric ICU do surrounded by doctors and nurses. I knew that they were doing all of the things that were critically essential for saving his life. You know, the first doctor was there 24 hours monitoring his kidneys, and he was on a ventilator and just everything. But, you know, one of the things you want to do is never feel helpless in any situation, right? I'm sitting there going, all right, you know, now what? What can we do? I did an SOS out to my entire community. And one of the people who showed up the hospital was a D.O. Dr. Ann Meyers from Cedar Sinai, and she showed up with essential oils. Now, I will tell you, I knew nothing about them. Like, I literally only heard of oh yeah, I'll put lavender in your bath. It will help calm you down. And it never really paid any attention to it. She brought a variety of different oils, and I actually talk about them in a little guidebook@grant virgin.com. we'll put that in the show notes, too. Remember, Those are@jjvirgin.com hormone E L for essential oils. Anyway, she brought these blends for me, and she showed me how to rub them onto trigger points. I was putting lavender into all of his cuts. He had so many. I mean, he had 13 fractures. He had bone sticking through his skin. He had glass and road, you know, gravel all over the place. I was pulling out. He had all sorts of stitches and all sorts of things. So I was rubbing lavender in that to help with healing. But she had a blend. Frankincense was part of it. And what I did was I would. I would put that under his nose for him to smell, and then I would rub it on his toes. And what was crazy is, you know, it's the first time I started to see him really start to consistently react to a stimuli. So I'd put in her nose, he'd wiggle his nose, he'd flutter his eyelashes. I'd put on his toes, he would get his toes to wiggle. And, you know, I mean, when your son's in a coma and they're going, I don't know if he's ever going to wake up. You know, all this doom and gloom, you're looking for any sign that someone is in there. And if anything, if nothing else, those essential oils gave me so much hope. But I kept a diffuser going. When we moved him to a private room, we had a diffuser going all the time. But I continued to use those with him from that point forward. And now I have. I'm looking, I have a diffuser sitting on my desk. Marisa makes me all these little rollers bottles that I carry around. I like traveling with her because then I always, you know, if something goes down, I always have stuff around. But she's kind of stocked me up with the things that I need. And that's why I would say, make sure that you get her book, the hormones, essential oils, hormone solution. But you'll also want to get the mom's book, too. And we'll put the links in the show notes for both the books, because you just want to know which blends you should have on hand. And in the next episode, we're going to be talking about what to stock your medicine cabinet with, how you can basically replace all the stuff in your medicine cabinet with essential oils, which is crazy cool. I will tell you I have not done that yet, but after, after doing this episode with her, I was like, huh, I need to get get into that. All right, cool. There you go again. You can grab all of what I did with Grant, but you know, those were the basics and it was showed me the power pretty darn quickly of what you can do with all of this. I will see you next week. Hello listeners, this is Ann Bogle, author, blogger and creator of the podcast what Should I Read next? Since 2016, I've been helping readers bring more joy and delight into their reading lives. Every week, I take all things books and reading with a guest and guide them in discovering their next read. They share three books they love, one book they don't, and what they've been reading lately, and I recommend three titles they may enjoy reading next. Guests have said our conversations are like therapy, troubleshooting issues that have plagued their reading lives for years, and possibly the rest of their lives as well. And of course, recommending books that meet the moment. Whether they are looking for deep introspection to spur or encourage a life change, or a frothy page turner to help them escape the stresses of work, school, everything, you'll learn something about yourself as a reader and you'll definitely walk away confident to choose your next read, with a whole list of new books and authors to try.
