Any Suggestions for Curbing Appetite and Cravings?
15 Dec 2025 · 6 min
This is a transcript of a JJ Virgin podcast episode (Ask the Health Expert) focused on a listener question about curbing appetite and late-night cravings. The episode mixes sponsor ad reads (Earth Breeze, Wayfair, Pacifico, Monarch, Dick's) with the host's health advice. JJ recommends removing trigger foods from the home, ensuring 8–9 hours of quality sleep, eating balanced meals (protein, healthy fats, fiber, low-starch carbs), establishing an evening routine (bath, herbal dessert-type teas, no-eating-after-dinner rule), and using accountability to break late-night eating. Episode includes sponsor promotions (Earth Breeze promo up to 40% off; Monarch promo and claim).

Hey, it's J.J. here.
You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one.
A lot of them contain harsh chemicals.
Like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners.
Those brighteners don't actually clean anything.
They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze.
It looks like a dryer sheet, but.
It'S actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating, and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

Legend has it, decades ago, a couple surfers went down to Mexico in search of epic swells, but they found something unexpected instead. It was it was still crisp, lively and smooth, but it had nothing to do with waves. It was Pacifico, a delicious Mexican lager. It's like it was brewed to be discovered. Ooh, this is a good one. And I have an easy answer. Padlocks and an armed guard. That's all you do. You just get a guard standing in the kitchen and you padlock all the doors and you're solved. Okay, obviously that is not going to work, is it? But gosh, sometimes I really wish it could because you're not alone, right? I mean, I think most people wake up in the morning with all the best intentions. They're super virtuous throughout the day, and then late night hits, their evil twin comes out and bam. Things happen. So how do we solve this? Well, there's a couple different things that I can recommend. Number one is get the enemy out of house. So probably at late night you're not sitting munching down on salmon and broccoli. I'm just guessing. Guessing. So the first thing I would tell you is get those trigger foods out of your house. Now. We all have them. I could tell you, you know, one of the seven foods I pull out in, in both the virgin diet and I pull out in sugar impact diet is popcorn. And if I had popcorn in the house, I'd be in deep trouble because salty and crunchy is my jam. So think about the things that are creating the problems that you're, you're having the cravings for and get those out. If it's a sugar thing, go through the Sugar impact diet. I teach you how to retrain your taste bud to appreciate savory and spicy and get rid of your sweet tooth forever. So that's the first thing, because I always want to look at why are you having appetite and cravings? Is it a food intolerance? Is there a hidden food intolerance that's causing cravings? That's a clear sign of one. Is it sugar? That's the first thing, number one. Number two, are you tired? Because as you start to get tired, you start as your. Then your body can start to crave sugar to give you a little serotonin hit. So what I'd love to do is let's reframe your evening and start a new routine. So here's what it's gonna look like. Cause this happens at late night, right? First of all, don't stay up late. So that will solve one thing. We shouldn't be up late, right? One of the Things that starts to happen. There is ghrelin, as it gets later, starts to come back up. It's the hunger hormone that will tell you you're hungry and your resolve's going down cause you're tired. So what I want you to do is make sure you're getting eight to nine hours of quality sleep. So let's dial back your sleep a bit. Then let's add in an evening routine that gets you out of the kitchen and nowhere near it. One of the greatest evening routines that can solve this problem for you is to go get in the bathtub. You can't be in the refrigerator if you're in the bathtub. So get in the bathtub with a great hot Epsom salts bath with a little lavender sniff some peppermint, which can also help you with cutting the cravings and cutting the hunger. Have a little bit of a no caffeine. Yummy tea. I stayed recently at Calabi, which is this amazing resort, and at night they gave us these dessert teas. They didn't have any calories, didn't have any sugar, but they were just absolutely amazing for you. So try one of those. I mean, they had like caramel cream and they were just tea bags. So try that and start a rule with yourself that you do not eat after dinner, that you eat a high quality dinner. You eat from the virgin diet sugar impact diet plate, right? So you're getting in your clean protein, healthy fats and fiber from non starchy veggies and slow low carbs. That's going to give you the satiety that you need, the blood sugar balance that you need. Super duper important. So make sure that you do that and shut that kitchen down. And then make sure you're eating those good meals throughout the day. Because there is that second meal phenomenon. You start out with a, with a bad breakfast, say a high carb breakfast that will start your blood sugar and insulin going and that will set you up for being hungry at your next meal. And then you're like the whole day is shot, right? So I want you to get it back together again. Shut the kitchen after your last meal. If you're hungry, have those, try those desserty types of tea or a glass of water, which shut down evening pangs. Expect it to be a little challenging for a couple of days. Do that other routine and get a friend or accountability partner on speed dial to help you. All right? Hope that helps. If you've got questions, I've got answers. Bounce on over to Instagram. And that is where I pick up my questions on my DMs. So go on over to my DMs and leave me a message and I will be sure to grab those and hopefully you will be next in my Ask the Health Expert questions.
