[Bonus Episode] Holistically Young with Dr. Anthony Youn
15 Dec 2025 · 35 min
Bonus podcast episode of Ask the Health Expert (JJ Virgin) featuring Dr. Anthony Youn (holistic plastic surgeon). Covers practical, simplified skincare routines (morning: cleanse → antioxidant serum [vitamin C] → SPF 30+; evening: cleanse → retinoid ± moisturizer), recommendations on exfoliation (normal skin 2–3×/week; sensitive skin ~1×/week), sunscreen guidance (physical sunblocks for children; avoid oxybenzone/octinoxate; avobenzone is safe), clean-beauty ingredient cautions (parabens, phthalates) and tools for checking products (EWG, Think Dirty). Diet recommendations for skin: eat the rainbow/antioxidants, collagen supplements, healthy fats (omega‑3s), and avoid sugar/processed foods (glycation ages collagen). In-office options discussed: microneedling ± PRP (recovery ~1–2 days, repeat every few months), microneedling with radiofrequency (Morpheus) for deeper tightening, lasers, Botox (widely used), hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane/Juvederm preferred for reversibility) and occasional fat grafting. Episode includes multiple sponsor ad-reads and links to Dr. Youn’s store and podcast.

Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. Thank you so much for having me on.
Well, you are my go to skin expert and last time I had you on it was either that or we were doing Instagram live and you were telling us your simple skincare routine which is, I will tell you prior to the pandemic and I want to go over that again. That became my thing and then. And you tell me because you're all over social media so I'm sure you've seen it. Was there like a little issue during the pandemic where people decided that they were going to become their own like dermatologist, esthetician and everything else.
So there's been a. Skincare has been this really hot topic on social media. There's a guy who's a friend of mine, a young guy, a guy named Hiram and He's in his mid-20s and in the span of like nine months he went from being completely from total obscurity, nobody knows who he is, to having something like 6 million followers subscribers on YouTube. And it's all about skincare and it's about the skincare routine. And I think that that has really. And him just putting it out there has caused so many dermatologists and other skincare experts to really focus on this whole idea of skincare routines. And it's anything from like the one we talked about will take like two minutes a day to like 20 to 30 minute skincare routines that people are doing.
Yeah, I think mine was more recovering for my attempted skincare routine. So what I love to do is like, we'll unpack all of it. Start with like, what are the bare minimums, the must haves, and then we can go up to like the nice to haves and then the absolutely do not do these things type of thing, which I think is what I fell into. Like the Retin a glycolic combo, deals that were problematic. Yeah, yeah, you're making the face. So let's start with just the bare minimum. Like what should you absolutely do? Because I've got a husband who doesn't wash his face.
So yeah, the first thing you have to do. So what we really look at is morning and evening and your morning routine should be different than your evening routine. So in the morning you always want to cleanse your skin. Okay. And you want to pick the right cleanser for your skin. So if you've got just very simply, if you've got dry skin, pick a more milky or hydrating cleanser. If you've got oily skin, then you want to go with a foaming cleanser because they will typically help remove the oil a little bit better. So you cleanse your skin. And then the second thing is you want to apply an antioxidant serum antioxidant. As you know, vitamin C is the most common antioxidant that is used. So apply that serum and then a sunscreen. And we usually recommend an SPF of 30 or more that will block 97% of the sun's rays. That is a general morning skincare routine. That's technically all you really have to do. Now in the evening, same thing, you want to cleanse your skin. And instead of applying, let's say an antioxidant serum, I usually recommend using something that's going to more treat your skin, that's going to reverse the aging, like a retinoid. And you mentioned before Retin A. Retin A is prescription strength retinoid. Retinol is over the counter strength. And most people do fine with the over the counter strength. And the vast majority of skincare brands have a retinol. If you want to add a moisturizer on top of that. If you've got kind of drier or more mature skin, feel free to do that. And that's really it. Like, that's kind of the bare bones of what people should do.
Wow. I literally started layering after I listened to you the first time. I was like, okay, this was fantastic. Like, what a revelation. And then some. I don't know what happened, happened during the pandemic. And I started like the morning, I tend to do better, but the evening was just like, what all can we pile on here? Like layers and layers of stuff. And then. And so I'd love to talk about this. Like, what about, you know, scrubs and masks and then these like, you know, peeling treatments and all this other stuff. What stuff are you okay to do at home and what stuff should you leave to the, to the experts?
So our skin feels so much better when we exfoliate it because the skin's going to then feel softer, it's going to feel smoother, it's going to feel refreshed. And what I usually recommend is most people who have, quote unquote, normal skin should exfoliate their skin two or three times a week. And that's it. If you've got sensitive skin, sometimes once a week is all you technically really need. But what happens is, is that a lot of these treatments that you've just mentioned are exfoliating treatments. And to do that to your face every day becomes excessive. And what can happen then is you can get skin irritation, you can get redness, you can even get breakouts from it because your skin's not used to that much trauma. So whether you're using a mask, I mean, really, you know, masks have so many different qualities. Anything from masks that will exfoliate because they have those like, acids in them, to masks that are purely moisturizing. I mean, it really depends on exactly what you're using. But that's why you have to really look at the ingredients and know exactly what this product is doing instead of just kind of buying this, buying that, and just using it all at one time.
So then a mask type of thing, is that like a once a weeker?
Typically, yes. Yeah. Now there are masks that are basically applied to your skin that will harden and then you eventually wash them off. But there are also other masks that people use that aren't like the masks that we think about. They're basically, they're Creams that you put on your skin and they call the mask. But it's not like the mask that you think about when you go get a facial. Those you may be able to do more often.
I would think that these peel off masks would probably be a. No, no.
Yeah, you have to be careful when you are peeling things. I mean, there's this weird trend right now on social media about people waxing even their whole face and putting even hard wax on their face as a way to exfoliate their skin. And your skin is not used to getting that type of damage. There's a lot of people who've also been really going away from the more aggressive scrubs. Okay. There are scrubs out there that are so aggressive that you can really abrade your skin and cause a lot of redness. So there is a trend away from that. And in those people who say, look, you know, I'm having adult acne, you know, I'm getting breakouts and whatever I put on my skin, I just keep breaking out. A lot of times the thing to do would be to get to that bare minimum, go back to what we started, you know, this podcast with. I have a friend of mine who's a producer at National Talk show and she was emailing me for months during the pandemic saying that my, I've got all these breakouts and I think I need to add this, I think I need to add that, I think I need to add this. And she was layering so many products on her face, I finally said, look, just stop all of it and just cleanse your skin and apply a sunscreen and that's it. And she emailed me recently, she said, oh my gosh, that was what I needed. I was actually doing too much, you know, because you think that adding more product is going to make your skin look better, but that's not always the case.
Well, you just saved a lot of time and money over here. Like I literally have, as we're doing a house remodel, I'm like, well, I need to build more places for more product. No, you just need to get rid of the product. Yes, I know. I want your line, Tony. I'm like, just wait, waiting for that. The refresh, it's coming in for everybody listening. Hopefully by the time this is out, you can grab Dr. Tony Yoon's line and I'm going to have all the information on that too. And if you subscribe to a show, you'll hear all about that too. And you can do that@subscribetodoctory.com-r y-o u n you mentioned sunscreen, and I know this is a bit of a controversial topic too, because of some of the ingredients in sunscreen. So let's talk about sunscreen and what's most important and what you shouldn't do. And then let's move into more of what you shouldn't do in terms of product ingredients.
Okay? So I think it's real important to realize that, I mean, there are two types of protection from the sun. There's sunscreen and there's sunblock. And dermatologists, plastic surgeons, most doctors do recommend applying sunscreen every day or sunblock. And that's the idea, obviously, that we know that's going to protect your skin against the UV rays. I know that there is that question about vitamin D and how many people have such low, low levels of vitamin D? So I'm not a dermatologist. I'm not somebody who has pasty white skin who never goes in the sun. I'm all about. I know how it feels like when you go out in the sun after living in Michigan in the winter and you get that warm sun on your skin, it makes you feel so good. I understand that. Okay. And I have no problem getting some sun and getting the vitamin D that you need. But I also see people as they're in their 40s, their 50s, and their 60s, where they get skin cancers on their face. And because of that, they have huge chunks of their face taken off. I mean, it is horrifying. So I do believe that there is a good happy medium there somewhere. You know, you don't have to necessarily slather the sunscreen on when you're inside, like some dermatologists recommend. You know, I think that there's a happy medium where you can protect your skin but still get the benefits. So going back to sunscreen, sunblock. Sunscreen are chemical sunscreens where you're actually, you apply. Apply it to your skin. It gets absorbed into your skin, and then it protects your skin chemically. And there's sun blocks which sit on the surface of the skin that block the sun's rays. Now, the problem with, you know, and you think, well, geez, why don't we just all use sunblocks all the time? Wouldn't that make the most sense?
Is that the thing that makes your face look white?
Well, that's. Therein lies the rub.
Very unattractive.
So, you know, back when we grew up in the 80s and the 90s, you would see that those lifeguards with the white paste on their nose. And who wants that? Well, now the sun sunblocks are micronized, so they don't leave quite that whitish hue. But if you've got darker skin, even if it's micronized, you may still see that. So what do you do? Okay, here's the answer. Okay. If you've got children, use sunblock, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, because you don't want your kids necessarily absorbing the these chemicals. So I typically with my children, we stick with the physical sunblocks. That way we know that they're covered and they don't care they're running in and out of the water. They don't care if they've got a whitish hue to their skin. It's not as big a deal if you are an adult and let's say you're wearing something on your face during the day, you don't want a whitish hue on your face, especially if you've got darker skin color. Then use a sunscreen, but avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate. Oxybenzone and octinoxate. Two main things wrong with these two chemicals very commonly used in sunscreens. The first thing is that they're potential hormone disruptors, which you've talked about on your podcast many times. And the second thing is that they're bad for the coral reefs. Now, if you live in Iowa, probably not a huge deal, but if you're on vacation, you're in Florida, anything like that, then you do want to avoid that. Avobenzone is very safe. That's deemed safe and effective. If you can go with a chemical sunscreen for your face, then use something with avobenzone instead.
Okay, perfect. This is fantastic. Now, beyond sunscreens and products, we should avoid, what other things should we be watching out for in, say, cleansers and skin care?
So there are, you know, the United States does not regulate the beauty products very, very well. There's only about 11 different ingredients that are banned in the United States, whereas there are hundreds, if not thousands banned in the UK So there are definitely a number of things to watch out for. Parabens are one thing, and the worry about parabens being hormone disruptors as well, phthalates, which are plasticizing agents too, you want to be careful with. And really what I tend to do is I recommend look, if you really want to be careful, you want to look at clean beauty, there's a couple places that you can go. Environmental Working Group online has got a good website where they go over, like all the different ingredients found in skincare, and we'll give you their recommendation of whether it's safe or not. And there's an app called Think Dirty, which has nothing to do with what you may be thinking, but it's Think Dirty, and it's actually. You can take, like, the UPC symbol at the store, and it will actually look up those products for you. Oh, that's fantastic. Yeah. And give you their recommendation of whether it is safe or not.
And then we can just use yours. So you've got a cleanser, a serum sunscreen. I know you're coming out with sunscreen, right?
Yeah. So sunscreen is a pain because you do have to get that approved with the fda. So what I've done is I've vetted one of my favorite skincare lines. It's not mine, called La Roche Posay. And I vetted them for the right. For their right sunscreens. And those are the ones that we are actually affiliate marketing on my. On my online store. Got it.
But we can go to your store and make sure and everything there is going to be clean. And we know we're getting what we.
Yeah, yeah. So you want to look for, you know, the whole tagline is clean beauty. Some doctors are against it, but they're also the same ones that will say, hey, you know what? It's fine to eat fast food as long as you follow the FDA's recommendations of their food pyramid. Stuff like that. You know, we're going to get there eventually, and the skin companies are being better and better, but it's. There's still a ways to go.
I can't believe anyone would be against it. Well, you mentioned food, and I still find it's, like, crazy groundbreaking that this would be considered groundbreaking, that someone who's in plastic surgery wouldn't be talking about food. It seems pretty critical. I do want to talk about things that you can do in the office, but before then, let's just talk about what you think is some of the key things that you should and shouldn't be eating. To have beautiful skin and to stay looking younger.
Yeah. I mean, these are a lot of the great things that you've talked about on your podcast a lot, and a lot of it is eating the rainbow. And we know that the antioxidants that you eat can really impact the quality of your skin. You know, one really interesting thing that's been very popular lately, and I know your followers have really been loving it, is collagen. And taking supplemental collagen. Now, interestingly, in the traditional medicine conventional medicine group, there's a lot of doctors who poo poo it and they say, oh well, that collagen, it gets eaten up and digested in your stomach so it never gets to your skin, which just is not true. And there are studies that do show an improvement of the collagen of the skin when people are on collagen supplements. So that's a big thing that I am recommending for my followers as well.
Awesome. That's great to know. Hey, before we go into the rest of the foods, let's take a quick break. So hang out with us. We'll be right back.

All right, I know that was a cliffhanger, but we've got collagen and we've got eating from the rainbow for the antioxidants. Just like you're putting topical, you're eating them too. Any other foods you want to make sure you eat before we talk about the ones that age you and create wreak havoc.
Yeah, you really want to go after the healthy fats. And so the way I describe it is these healthy fats, monounsaturated fats, you know, omega 3 fatty acids, these are anti inflammatory. And so much of the aging process has to do with inflammation. And so the way I describe it to my patients and my followers is that these types of fats, like cold water, fish, nuts and seeds, these can really help to soothe the skin from the inside out and provide even moisture from the inside out. So really going after those healthy fats can be great for your skin as well.
It always feels so crazy to me that people are putting so much moisture on their skin and then they're trying to eat this low fat diet. Like this is not going to work. And the other one that makes me nuts is the sugar. So let's talk about what you shouldn't eat. That will age you faster and you'll see it on people's skin.
So the number one thing, just like you said, is sugar. Sugar equals wrinkles. And you know, the sugar has impacts on other obviously health issues. But A lot of people don't realize that the more sugar you eat, the more inflammation that you get in your skin and the faster that you will actually age. And it's a process of glycation where the sugar actually will bond to the collagen fibers of your skin and cause it to kind of kink and not be as in tight bundles combined with that kind of chronic inflammation that you can get from the chronic sugar spikes and the insulin spikes. So if you do one thing to improve your skin, it would be, and I recommend this to everybody, stop drinking soda pop. Or at least reduce the amount that you drink, because that's.
Oh, forget it. Don't reduce it. Knock it off. Like, how are people still drinking soda at this point?
Really, your followers are probably much healthier than mine. For me, I try to get them started. Like, just stop drinking six soda pots a day and just drink one to start out with.
Well, you know what you can have them do as a transfer is have them transfer from regular soda to Zevia soda.
Yes.
Have you tried that Zevia?
I have, yeah. I think it's good. I myself would just get rid of all of that.
Yeah, but you're not normal. You're not normal. This is like trying to take soda away from people. Always go, it's a step down. We'll take it from regular soda to a Zevia soda to sparkling water. Like, let's just take it down to sparkling water, fruit flavors, to plain sparkling water, to actually drink water. I mean, you know, any other big avoids besides the sugar, Sugar, sugar and more sugar?
Well, I think the other thing, and this probably isn't. I mean, your. Your audience is very healthy, but there's so much of this kind of fast and processed foods out there. And we're talking about these foods will cause free radicals to develop in your body. They're harder to digest. It really trying to stay away from these types of processed foods. And really I have a saying that I do on my YouTube channel. It's eat real food, use clean skin care, and only consider actual plastic surgery as a last resort. And so my feeling is if you stick with that as just a basic, then you're gonna be way ahead of everybody else.
So let's talk. Cause here you are, plastic surgeon saying plastic surgery is a last resort. So refreshing. But I know before you actually go in and go under and get cut, there's a whole lot of things that are. That can happen before then in office. So what are some of the. I always rely on you as to what are the things we could be doing, what are the things that are kind of don't deliver the results they're saying they do? So what are the ones to look for right now?
So right now, some of the really cool things going on are the PRP type of microneedling treatments. So this is called regenerative cosmetic medicine. So microneedling, very common treatment, and it's very inexpensive, where you have an automated device that makes tiny little punctures in your skin to create basically a controlled trauma that will cause the collagen of your skin to tighten up as it heals. Well, you take that to the next level and you actually then put prp, platelet rich plasma, your own blood that's spun down and the platelets and growth factors removed. You put that over the skin, and when those little puncture holes are still open, if you apply it right after the treatment, that PRP will seep into those little puncture holes and will help to rejuvenate the skin from the inside out. So that's a really cool way of really utilizing your body's own growth factors and its own inherent kind of healing abilities to make you look younger.
The other thing. So with that one, how often would you. Is that a one shot deal? Do you do that repeatedly? And what's the recovery time?
Recovery usually is a day or two, if that. And that's something that you can do every couple of months if you'd like. And it really depends on how aggressive they are or how deep they go with the needles.
Okay, and does it hurt?
It does a little bit. Usually they'll use topical numbing medicine, but it's nothing that necessitates anything more than that.
Okay, cool, next one.
So the other thing now is that you take, let's say that microneedling, so you're making those little punctures, and instead of just applying the PRP over it, you now supercharge those punctures with radio frequency. Radio frequency is heat. And so you do these needles, and when these, and technically they're gold plated needles go into the skin, then it releases this radio frequency energy to create heat in the deeper skin. And this is a way to not only get the results from the microneedling, but you heat up the deep skin, you get even more tightening of an effect. So there's a treatment called Morpheus, which is one of the most popular ones we literally just got in our office. It's a really hot treatment. A lot of people across the country are really getting on board with this and this is the first one in 17 years that I brought into my office that actually will also tighten up skin of the body. Because, you know, we have options for tightening the skin of the face and of the neck, but it's those other areas that bother people that we just have not had good options for, like loose skin around the knees of the tummy of the arms. So I'm real excited to see whether this really lives up to the hype as being a non invasive option to tighten up skin of the entire body, like from head to toe.
Interesting. Yeah, my esthetician's. Well, she's a nurse practitioner. She has one in her office. And I was like, I'm not doing anything until I talk to you. So it's interesting you brought that one up. And it sounds like I just did a CO2 laser and then did PRP on top of it. So that sounds kind of similar.
There is this idea of layering treatments, which I think overall is a good idea. It's not such a good idea sometimes when you're talking about layering fillers, but when you're layering skin treatments like that, because there are certain treatments that are really. They leave, let's say, the surface of the skin intact, but they heat up the deep skin. And if you combine, let's say a treatment like that with a surface treatment, like a fractional laser, that type of thing, then you can ideally get your skin rejuvenated from the inside out, like literally taking care of multiple layers at a time.
So what about fillers and Botox at this point? Has anything changed there? What are you recommending?
Nothing huge has changed at this point. Botox is still king. Really. It's, I think Last year over 5 to 6 million people have it done. It's very, very popular.
There is, I wonder if when the quarantine ended, if there was a mass rush to that.
Oh, it was insane. I think in my office we had something like five or six hundred people signed up, like waiting to get in. It was insane. But the interesting thing right now is that there is a Botox alternative from a company called Revance that is in the FDA approval process and it is billed as a longer lasting Botox. So Botox lasts about two to three, I'm sorry, about three to four months right now on average. And this one's supposed to be more like five to six months. It is not FDA approved yet. It's on its way and it can get approved any day now. And that I think could really change the game.
Nice. And what about the fillers, what are the fillers that you're recommending? And what about fillers versus fat?
So the most important thing with filler is you want to use a filler that is a hyaluronic acid. So hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin. Restylane and Juvederm products are the two big brands that use hyaluronic acid. And the reason why you want to stick with that is because, worst case scenario, if you get filler and that filler is accidentally injected into a blood vessel, you could develop scarring, you could develop dead tissue, you could lose parts of your face, and you can even become blind. And all of these things have happened. Thank God. Not to any of my patients. But if you have a hyaluronic acid filler, you have an antidote to it that you can inject to melt it away and potentially reverse if something crazy like that happens. If you have some of the other types of fillers that are not hyaluronic acid, then basically you just wait and see what dies it, literally. And so if you're going to have fillers, stick with Restylane or Juvederm products, because, you know, they're reversible and they're by far safest. Now, I used to. I've been in practice 17 years, and when I first started practice, I injected fat, and I swear to God, half my patients, and now it's a very small percentage because fat is surgical. Fat's a little unpredictable. So for me, I use fat when somebody comes in with a very, very drawn and gaunt face, where you're going to be injecting a lot of syringes of filler to get them where they want to be. For some of them, fat can be a really good option. But fat does take a couple of weeks of downtime. It's real surgery. So that's usually what I save it for.
That makes sense. I had 2 ounces of fat taken out to do some stem cell therapy.
That's the only fat in your body. Probably. It was.
One ounce on either side of my flank. I will tell you, Tony, I was bruised for three weeks. I was like, it's an ounce on either side. It's like, how do people do this liposuction? Oh, my.
Probably because it was so hard for them to get just one ounce out of you that, you know, for me, certain people, you can do. I can get it out in like, a minute and a half. For you, that probably took them like, 20 minutes on each side because they're taking such little amount of time because there's nothing there. Well, and that would cause that type of bruising.
So that makes me feel good. So exciting stuff. Then it sounds like from all of this kind of the top takeaways is simplify your skin care because doing more is not better here and can actually make your skin worse. So that three step in the morning, four step in the evening and then maybe a scrub depending on your skin one to three times a week in a mask. All right. Make sure you're getting everything clean so you can go to what's your website?
My website is yoonbeauty.com easy peasy.
And then before you start even looking at anything else, get your diet dialed in. I mean it seems ridiculous that you start looking at all these anti aging things if you're aging yourself by eating a bunch of junk.
Yeah. It's like you're building a house and you're wondering what should I put up in the attic? But you don't have the actual foundation laid first. What you eat is the foundation of your house.
Plus it would help you recover from any of these treatments, I'm assuming too. And then looking at these in office procedures first before you go to the next step. So that is the last resort.
Definitely.
That's just a great message.
Yeah. And there's so much that you can do short of surgery that the vast majority of people, you don't have to go to the operating room.
