JJ Virgin says health experts waste time listing credentials instead of building personal authority. In a crowded market, standing out means doing something distinct, not copying competitors. Training matters, but differentiation is what actually makes you credible.
All right. What is the biggest mistake health experts make when trying to grow their impact?
I think leaning too far into their training rather than building their authority. Now, here's the thing. You've got to have training. You've got to have experience. But we're assuming you have those things and now you're out in the world and you're in a saturated market. First of all, you want to be in a saturated market because if you're in a market that isn't saturated, there's probably not a lot of demand. But what you want to do in a saturated market is go, what is everybody doing? And do something different, right? It doesn't even have to be contrarian. As much as it must be different. And it's such— it's so tempting to do what everybody else is doing, because if you go out and do something different that's validated, they're going to say things about you, right?
