A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

Hey, it's JJ Virgin. And welcome to the JJ Virgin Lifestyle show where we'll connect with some of the coolest people in the world. Plus, I give you tips that you can put into fast action to uplevel your health and your life. Now today's guest. Well, let me back it up. First, I'm going to tell you about what the show's going to be about. It is a subject I've been interested in for a while and I've never heard someone explain it the way Amish Shah explains it. So let me tell you a little bit about what we're going to talk about. We are going to talk about the forgotten ancient secrets to great health and well being. And what's so crazy is this stuff that they talked about 5,000 years ago, 2,000 years ago, a thousand years ago is what we're now going, wow, this is integrative medicine. So we're finally catching up. And the things you're going to hear today about toxicity and other ways to detox. So super cool. So let me tell you a little bit about our guest. So he started out as a massive entrepreneur and started making millions in his 20s. Kind of had a crisis, a health crisis because he started having too much fun. He'll share all of that. But he's built numerous online businesses, all sorts of things from apps to online publishing to software. I mean, over $50 million in sales in 11 years. He's been on Inc. 500 twice as a CEO and founder of one of the fastest growing companies in America. And then he just kind of was like, bam. He actually sold it all and went to India. So now he focuses on Deep Origins, his passion. And it's really about taking the tech and combining it with ancient wisdom. And he spent a lot of time in India. He's done all sorts of interesting health practices. He went through a major journey that he's going to share with us and it's more mesmerizing. So I'm super cool to share. Today's guest, Amish Shah with you. All right, so let's do it. Amish Shah, welcome to the show. It's so good to have you here with me today.
Thanks, jj. It's great to be here.
Well, this is something we haven't talked about. So when we were chatting the other day, I'm like, all right, you gotta come on. I had the chance in graduate school to study a little bit of what we're gonna talk about today, but I mean, like, so superficial. Just enough to get you interested and dangerous, I think. So let's do dive in here because you're kind of the ancient wisdom, Ayurveda meditation guy. And, like, how did you get started in all this?
Yeah, so I'm an entrepreneur, and I had reached success at a very young age. I was running a multi million dollar company at the age of 25. And when you're making a lot of money that young, you tend to blow a lot of it and party a.
Lot of the rails.
Basically. I went a little crazy and, you know, I think I forgot to exercise. I forgot to eat good. I forgot to.
That sounds like a cartoon. Honestly, Amish, like, you always see a little car. Oh, my gosh. I forgot to eat healthy today.
I was intoxicated. I was drinking a lot, smoking, and, you know, a couple years, a good solid four to five years of that will catch up to you. So when I was, like, about 29, I went to the doctor and I was just going for, you know, I had some things coming up, and I. I didn't blame it on my lifestyle at all. It couldn't have been my lifestyle. I was this awesome entrepreneur making tons of money. Screw that, right? And the doctor's like, well, your cholesterol is 360.
Wow.
And for anyone, you know, hard for that. Very hard for that one. And you have neuroadrenal failure. Your kidneys are going to give up on you, basically. And then. Then he said that, you know, you. You're just not in good health. You know, there was other things that were happening to me, too. And so I. It just hit me like, oh, my God. I had surrounded myself with Ferraris and Maseratis and, you know, beachfront homes, and I realized that I had everything except for two things, and that was health and happiness.
Oops. Yeah.
And, you know, I had. I literally had everything. I thought I was, like, the man, you know, and, you know, that that was a big shifting point for me because it was kind of like an awakening, like, oh, my God, what's happening to me? And right around that time, my wife had gotten pregnant when I was like kind of getting better, and I was just like, I'm about to have a child. I can't, I can't. I can't be like this.
You know, It's a great wake up call, isn't it?
This is not who I am and this is not who I was. You know, I was always generally pretty healthy and conscious of what I ate. And, you know, not saying over the top. I would, I would do yoga, I would meditate, you know, and all of that stuff disappeared for a solid four to five years, you know, and that, that was a huge wake up call. So I started doing the normal things everyone else would do. I started eating healthier, I juiced, I started going to the gym. But I felt like I couldn't really get rid of the underlying cause of A, my addictions to these substances and B, and not just substances, foods and all the things that I was consuming. I couldn't. Sure, I was dropping weight and things like that, but I wasn't actually fixing myself. And so that's when I decided to kind of sell my companies. I had two companies at the time. I sold both of them and decided to just kind of take a breather and a break from everything, travel the world for a little while. And when I got back, I really just wanted to get deep into it. I had to discover what it was about myself that I love the most and that I do the most.
But that was very brave. I got to just jump in and just acknowledge that it is very hard to get off that treadmill. Especially when you've kind of created this identity. Identity about Round being the man, right, with beachfront house and the Ferrari, and then to just kind of step away from all of it, like, that's amazing.
I literally sold all my cars, got rid of the house, got rid of all this expensive stuff that I had. I got rid of all the stuff that we accumulate and accumulate and accumulate. And it sits in garages and boxes and closets and I just purged. I literally purged. And I think through that process, it didn't happen overnight. You know, it took me a good two years. And Ayurveda was the one thing that helped me snap back to reality almost. And within Ayurveda there was other things. So going back a little bit, you know, while I was traveling, kind of rediscovering myself, I realized I loved ancient wisdom. Everything from yoga to meditation to Ayurveda, which is an ancient healing science of India. All of These yoga and meditation, you know, And I. And I loved it. I always loved it before I started my business. And so I was like, you know, I. I still research this stuff a lot, so how can I turn my passion into something I love doing? And so that started the whole entire new business that I've created. It's called Deep Origins. And basically we just create content and we release wisdom around these topics, like yoga, like meditation, like Ayurveda. And so we have a couple YouTube videos that are out there with guided meditations. We created guided meditation courses. I went deep into, like, these ancient, like, I guess you'd call them mandalas from India, they call the yantras and studied them to understand how they affect our body. Why, why when we look at them, it gives us an altered state of mind and understanding.
Wait, so explain that. Explain this one.
So there's these ancient symbols. They're called yantras. They're very similar to mandalas, which many, many people have heard of in the modern term. And they're basically geometric patterns and geometric designs. And so thousands of years ago, they drew these things and they put meanings behind it. They said that they had energetic qualities to it. More recently, they started studying this one particular symbol called the Sri Yantra. And the Sri Yantra, they studied it in the Indian Science Journal, and the University of Moscow did a study together that just by gazing at the symbol gets you into alpha brainwaves, really, by gazing at it.
I got sent a scroll of this when my son was in the hospital. You know, when your son's teetering between life and death, a lot of things you thought were hooey, you really are just like, sure, bring it all on, you know, holy water, scroll, send it. And that was one of the things. I had no idea what it was.
Yeah. And so they have these different things for, like, healing, for example. They have ones for wealth, they have ones for manifesting. They have these things. And I'm like, huh, that's really interesting. And they actually proved that by prolonged usage of gazing at these symbols over weeks, months and years, actually increased the neuroplasticity and also increased the thickness of the dendrites and the way information gets sent.
Gosh, we should make this into wallpaper.
I have it in my background. I have it on my phone. I have it everywhere. If you saw my house, you'd think I'm crazy, man. So that. That's just, you know. And I've always been obsessed with this symbol since I was 16. I saw it. My parents are from India, they're immigrants. They came here in 1976. And some of the things that were in my house growing up in America, I was born in New Jersey. You know, I. You know, I didn't think anything of it. I was just like, what's normal?
Yeah, you just have these things in your house.
Exactly. No, I'm going to go play basketball and I'm going to eat pizza, and I'm going to do everything that, you know, my American life is, like, kind of leading on. And we had these ancient things that my mom used to do, like, even Ayurvedic things. Like, if I had a tummy ache, she wouldn't give me Pepto Bismol. She'd make something and then she'd make me swallow it, and it'd be like herbs and seeds and all this kind of life.
That's how lucky you are right now. You're probably going, I'm so lucky. And for those of us out here that don't know what Ayurvedic is, they just think of Deepak Chopra, probably, and that's as far as it goes. Like, so what is it?
So Ayurveda is an ancient healing science from India. It's over 5,000 years old, and it consists of a natural holistic method for a, prevention of disease, and B, even when you have the disease, how we can actually reverse it. So this is the first almost science of longevity. Ayur means life, and Veda means knowledge. So literally, this book that they wrote thousands of years ago means life, knowledge. Yoga is a sister science of Ayurveda. Meditation is a sister science of Ayurveda. One is mind, one is body, one is soul. And, you know, we have these kind of connections that we always say mind, body, soul, Mind, body, soul. But sometimes we don't really understand what it means or how to tap into that.
Now, it just sounds trite. You know, it's like, yeah, right.
So I immersed myself. I literally immersed myself into this world. I meditated every day for like two hours a day. I was exercising every day for like an hour, hour and a half. I was eating Ayurvedically according to my dosha. Now, what dosha means is basically each human is born with three doshas. Every single human. That's vata, pitta, and kapha. And the basis of that is the five elements. So there's what makes up vata is space and air. What makes up pitta is fire and water. What makes up earth or kapha is earth and water. Now, your body is Made up of these three different doshas. Now, you're born with a particular combination of these doshas. And as you get older, these doshas start getting out of imbalance.
How do you know what you're born with?
So practitioners can give you an analysis. You can take online dosha quizzes, which are sometimes you just have to be careful which one you take. Some of them are good, some of them are bad. I'll be completely honest with you. But it's always good to see a practitioner because they can tell by your pulse and your pulse reveals all. So we actually have, when we think of a pulse, we think of the doctor. They put your hand on the wrist, they measure pulse. That's one pulse, according to Ayurveda says there's three pulses that we need to measure, and there's six different types of pulse that you should measure, such as the depth, such as the rhythm, such as, you know, the intensity of it. So they measure these different factors of these different pulses. They ask you lifestyle questions. It's a lot of it is based on lifestyle. And you are basically given foods and herbs to take to balance these three doshas. So if you have too much earth element or you have too much water, that's kapha. That means your kapha imbalance. And that means that you would probably take certain actions to balance that out.
So does everyone, everyone have one that they should have that's higher or should we all be, like, balanced?
You will predominantly, mostly everyone has predominance of one when they're born, and then the other two might be a little lower and more equal. And it really depends on the person, you know, so vata is generally skinnier, taller type of people, more lanky type of body. Pitta is more medium framed and kapha is a little bit heavier, wide body. And so within that are these different characteristics that you fall into. And when those characteristics or like I said, these doshas or these elements get out of balance, then that's what creates, you know, inflammation on our body. That's what creates disorder in our body, that's what creates disease in our body. When these things get out of balance. Now there's a process to that too, which is kind of cool. And they say that basically the basis of it is the root of all disease starts in poor digestion. That is a quote directly from Ayurveda.
Amen.
Right? And just now we're starting to discover, oh, leaky gut. What's that? Oh, sexy, right? And so, you know, it's, it's really, really Cool. To think thousands of years ago they knew that these things, when you're out of balance, causes indigestion, causes your digestion to mess up, which causes toxicity. That toxicity is what they call amma in Ayurveda. That amma is toxic sludge literally in your intestinal tract, in your stomach, in your. All of that, the colon and everything. And when that just sits there for a long time, it escapes out of your gut, goes into your bloodstream, and then it pockets itself. It stores itself in weak areas of your body. So it could be where you might have gotten hurt when you were like 15 years old. It'll start storing all these deposits in there. It could be something else that's going on in your body. If your mind is weak, it'll start pushing some of these toxins into your brain. And so what's happening is that once these toxins over time start developing and they start going to these areas in your body, well, guess what the next step is. Inflammation. After you get inflammation, well, then what happens after inflammation? Well, the next step comprises your immune system, and then you get disease.
So all the things that we've, like, spent all this time now talking about being integrative and taking a functional medicine approach have been out there in ancient wisdom forever, right? So, you know, and now we're talking like it's a new thing with leaky gut and gut issues and creating inflammation that leads to disease. It's like.
And how stress is the number one cause of disease. Ayurveda actually says stress is the number one cause of disease. And so, you know, man, it's really interesting to know that thousands of years ago that they came up with this. This wasn't some, you know, voodoo science made up in, you know, randomly. It was actually logically put together and tested.
And now it's just gotten a lot worse because we've gotten so far away from the right diet and we've gotten under so much stress that we just amplified the whole thing.
So along this mission, I went to this one thing called panchakarma. Panchakarma means five karmas, five detoxes. And so you detox basically out of your skin, your nose, your mouth, your butt, your ass, your anus, your colon.
I'm so waiting. How are you going to say that one?
And then you have pee, and then you have sweat, and you have different modes of detoxing. And so Ayurveda is the only system that's actually built on cleansing and detoxing from the lymph system versus Looking at it from the organ system. So what they do is they'll give you herbs and foods, and then they give you massages, oiled massages with herbs and things like that. Now what that does is it loosens up those toxins that are stuck in those places, and then they enter these different areas, they enter your digestive tract, they enter your bloodstream, and you pee it out, and maybe you're sweating it out out of your skin. So there's different modes of either massage or sweat. In India, they do things that are even more. They make you vomit. To get things out of your stomach, they do ghee inside. Like, you open your eye in a ghee, and you blink your eye in ghee. So they do all these really amazing things. And I can't even tell you. I was completely set back to normal after my panchakarma. Completely 25 pounds lighter than I was before this. All my levels are normal now, and I. It was. It was almost like I had completely rejuvenated myself through the process of panchakarma, and that inspired me tremendously. So, you know, along with the meditation practice, along with my mantra practice, along with the yoga, asanas, and some of the stuff that I would do. Ayurveda was like, I feel like the core. It was like this. It was like the anchor.
You know, this is the best explanation. Of course. Now I want to go and do that detox. Like, that sounds like the coolest, comprehensive, integrative detox ever. Like, amazing. Yeah. I mean, I've never heard anything like this. This is. It's so cool. I mean, you had me at massage and the. The ghee in the eyes, but, you.
Know, hey, look, I'm not gonna. There's a very particular diet that you have to follow, too, for about two to three weeks. And that is probably the hardest part.
I don't know. I get people to give up gluten, dairy, and sugar. I'm sure it couldn't be that hard.
Yeah, it. You know, again, it's. That's what I hear as the number one complaint from perspective.
Yeah. But that's the way you make the biggest change. And speaking of that, because we're running out of time, like, I just want to throw this zing a curveball at you. So for you, and this just has been crazy, amazing information, what for you is the one thing that you do every day that you feel like makes the biggest difference in your life.
I want to say, I wish there was one thing, but can I say two?
Okay.
So one thing is meditation. We live crazy lives. Let's get realistic. We are constantly on the go. We are constantly barraged with text messages and TV and phone and Facebook and being on camera and you know, whatever it is. We constantly have technology in front of us and that's just attacking our body. The food that we eat, the pollutants in the air, all of that stuff, you know, meditation, really just that that stress that your body brings has helped me tremendously to help relax the body, help reduce the stress, help even literally. It can help you with digestion, it can help you with calmness. It helps your body heal itself and repair itself. And the second thing is this is, this is an interesting one is drinking warm hot water throughout the day.
Hot water, huh?
Yeah, plain, you know, warm to hot water every single day throughout the day. And what that does is in Ayurveda they have something called agni. Agni is your digestive power, how well you're able to digest the food. And that's actually even more important than the digestion itself. You need to have the power to digest. If your stomach is slow and sluggish, it's not going to do anything. So hot water throughout the day not only A, gives you energy, but B, it removes toxins from your body and C, keeps your digestion going strong all day long, processing whatever is in there without using your body's energy to warm up what it needs to do to break down all the foods that you eat.
All right, so I definitely, those were definitely worth having too. That was a. I've never heard that one. I'm always waiting for the new one. And the warm water throughout the day is just a great little pearl. And I bet you they're a bunch of Ayurvedic principles that we can bring into every, you know, this ancient wisdom that like we should be bringing into everyday life. So I would love to have a place to. What's, what's the thing that you have? Because I always have every one I bring on, give something cool to our listeners. So what cool thing do you have that we can, I'm putting you on the spot Amish. What cool thing can I, can I give our listeners?
Yeah, so we have some really cool things on, on our ancient healthcare website. Ayurveda is really like I, it was the anchor. It was something that helped me become self realized to some extent. You know, to understand what I'm doing and how I'm doing it wrong and how to get myself into a better place. And meditation and yoga, all that stuff kind of follow. So that website would be ancienthealthcare.com on ancienthealthcare.com we have this really cool quiz that I developed with our chief medical officer. She's a neurologist and ayurvedic practitioner based out of Chicago. And we put together a toxicity quiz. It took us about a year to actually put this into paper and get it out.
I know, I'm so taking it. I'm looking at it right here. I'm actually what I'll do is put this all in the show notes because I was hoping you'd say you were going to give away the quiz. I'll, I'll put it over at jjvirgin.com forward/amish so that people can come take this quiz. Because I've never heard someone address toxicity and I, I've been like studying detox because of the weight loss resistance issues for years. And this is fascinating. I mean I would love to go do this type of a cleanse. Hopefully this is going to be something that you're going to be offering. Hint, hint.
We are offering it. Excellent. Cool.
So they'll be able to find out. So I'll put that all in the jjvirgin.com amish because the biggest thing taking us down now as a country and a world is just being hammered with toxins every single day. So you don't detox once you're not done with this one. So. So wouldn't you agree?
Agree.
I always feel like people want to go, I'm going to go do this three day detox. I'm like that's a nice start. You know.
Exactly.
That's what it is. It's a nice start. So again, this has been awesome. I could talk to you all day. I know you've got more stuff on your website so I'll put that in the show. Notes and more things coming out which I'm excited about because I think the more we can take ancient wisdom and put it into our modern day, the more we can get rid of these modern day ailments that shouldn't be here in the first place. So hugely appreciate. Yep.
We've interviewed over 32 doctors over the last four years that are gonna that are on the website. So you can watch a ton of stuff, get a bunch of content.
That is awesome. Thank you. Thank you so much for joining me. Now after the break I'm going to be answering a listener's question. So stay with me.

Welcome back. This is the time where I answer a listener's question. And today's question fits perfectly. It's amazing how this always works so well with the subject. Since we really started to hit detox hard, I'm going to pick today the question that came from Debbie in San Rafael. J.J. i hear so much about these juice cleanses. Should I be doing this? And if so, how often should I do one? The answer is no. Here's the thing. Should you be detoxing? Yes. Should you be doing it every day? Absolutely yes. Should you also be doing some focused detoxification periodically where you really get essential and focus in and do more things, especially if you've gone been working with the functional medicine practitioner practitioner and maybe found that you have heavy metals or some detox issues going on? Absolutely. So I kind of mentioned this when we were on the interview that you trying to detox for three days and think you're done with it. You're never done that. We are constantly being barraged by toxins. Even if you were in the most pure area in the world, the air is flowing, the water's, you know, water's flowing and there's, there's toxins everywhere now. And we're getting them the most from the foods we eat. Even if we're eating organic, trying to eat healthy, it's still getting in there. The water we drink, the air we breathe, the outgassing of things, what we're touching, your skin's a sieve. So basically the first thing that you want to do is make sure that you aren't taking in any unnecessarily. So, I mean, manage your environment as much as you possibly can. But then you want to be doing things on a daily basis that help you detoxify. One of the key things here, and the reason I don't like juice cleanses, is juice cleanses and can free the toxins up that are stored in your fat because we store toxins in our fat. And when we do that, we actually lower our metabolism, cause hormone disruptions called endoscrin disruption, and we can hold on to more fat, become weight loss resistant, also can impair your thyroid function, make you insulin resistant. There's a whole lot of bad stuff that happens and you know, it's been linked to cancers. So we definitely want these things out. But the problem is if you just free them up in your body and don't export excrete them, you've got even bigger problems. And remember what Amish said about excreting them out through the various pathways, sweat and urine and feces, snot, you know, you're getting them out, right? Your skin exfoliating. So one of the key things is you want to make sure that not only are you freeing them up from the fat in your body, but that you're escorting them out. And you actually, to escort them out, need amino acids. And so this is where these juice cleanses that have no, no real amino acids in them or super low in amino acids can create problems because speed up the first phase of detox, which frees up the toxins in your body, and you basically shut down the second phase which where they grab onto the amino acids and escort them out. You don't want to do that. You actually want to be better at the second phase, right? Not the first. You want to keep getting these things out. So that's protein dependent, that's amino acid dependent. So you want to make sure you're digesting your protein. That's where really important for a lot of us here. If you're over the age of 30 or under any kind of stress, which I think I've pretty much covered everyone there, you probably lower in your hydrochloric acid, not digesting your protein as well. So Amish said it digestion is key. That's why he did the warm water throughout the day. So work on your digestion. That's where I use protein digestive enzymes. So that is in my, my protein digestive enzyme called the metabolic trifecta or safety net, either of those two. So I'm going to use that. Then the next thing that you need to do is make sure that you're doing a variety of things that also aid detox. Lots of green vegetables, deep green leafies have great capacity to detoxify you. Some of the different things in those can do something called heavy metal chelation, where they're going to yank onto the heavy metals and pull them out, they grab a hold of them. Fiber is really cool for pulling the toxins out and keeping your increasing your transit time. So you're escorting them out of the body. That's super important. Of course, Lots of water and I love the idea of the warm water there aiding digestion. That's important too. Dry brushing can help stimulate your lymphatic system and also exfoliate. A hot Epsom salts bath can help with detoxification. Green plants around the house can help with your air, of course, water purifiers, air purifiers. So what I'm getting to is there's a lot of things here that aid with detoxification. The thing I don't want to see you do is one of those novel juice cleanses because they can actually make you worse, not better. If you're feeling worse as you're doing this, this is your body trying to tell you, hey, knock it off, stop it. Right? You should be feeling better as you do it. More energetic, clear, better focus, losing the bloat. And so the big takeaway is that you want to start putting things into your life on an everyday basis. Number one, you want to get as many, you know, get toxins out of your life. The GMOs, the artificial sweeteners, the pesticides, the outgassing from things like dry cleaning. Get those out and then put in things on a daily basis that help detoxify you. One that I do all the time is my sunlight and sauna I've got in my garage. That's a far medium and near infrared sauna that really helps you detoxify and exercise because you sweat is another great one. And then good elimination. If you've got chronic constipation, you know, you can end up with a lower thyroid function due to toxicity. That makes you more constipated, so you get more toxic. So that's where Epsom salts baths and more magnesium can help. Now, I threw. No, I threw a lot at you over on my website. Hello, listeners, this is Anne Boeckle, author, blogger, and creator of the podcast what Should I Read next? Since 2016, I've been helping readers bring more joy and delight into their reading lives. Every week, I tag all things books and reading with a guest and guide them in discovering their next read. They share three books they love one book they don't, and what they've been reading lately, and I recommend three titles they may enjoy reading Next. Guests have said our conversations are like therapy, troubleshooting issues that have plagued their reading lives for years, and possibly the rest of their lives as well. And, of course, recommending books that meet the moment. Whether they are looking for deep introspection to spur or encourage a life change, or a frothy page turner to help them escape the stresses of work, school, everything, you'll learn something about yourself as a reader, and you'll definitely walk away confident to choose your next read, with a whole list of new books and authors to try. So join us each Tuesday for what Should I Read Next? Subscribe now, wherever you're listening to this podcast, and Visit our website whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com to find out more.
