Do Toxins Get Stored in Fat?
15 Dec 2025 · 9 min
JJ Virgin talks with environmental health specialist Dr. A. Lee Cohen about whether toxins accumulate in body fat. Lipophilic chemicals from plastics, pesticides, and flame retardants do get stored there and can affect weight. Cohen recommends avoiding plastic containers and nonstick pans, and using exercise to mobilize stored chemicals.

Hey, it's J.J. here.
You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners.
Those brighteners don't actually clean anything.
They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze.
It looks like a dryer sheet, but.
It'S actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing.
I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes.
Out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

So yes, in fact, many chemicals are stored in human fat in our fat cells. And in fact they're called lipophilic or lipid loving chemicals, especially a class that was recently found over the last 15 to 20 years to be called endocrine disrupting chemicals or EDCs. This class of chemicals which includes chemicals from pesticides, from plastic chemicals such as bisphenol A, which was many people remember were taken out of baby bottles in 2012, flame retardant chemicals that are added to our couches, other chemicals that include chemicals in makeup such as fragrance, and different additives for antimicrobial processes like triclosan. So many of these chemicals, which are under the heading of endocrine disruption or endocrine disrupting chemicals, do actually live or remain very quietly in the cells of our bodies that are fat, whether it's fat stores in our abdomen, whether it's our liver, which is quite fatty. So one of the recommendations, and I had a patient recently asked me why she was not losing weight. And among all of her great healthy habits and her excellent diet, she was also storing her foods in plastic containers which do in fact leach some of those plastic chemicals into the food that she's trying to store. Store. And in fact, I said, why don't you try giving up some of these food containers that are plastic and maybe perhaps even give up non stick pans which contain nonstick chemicals that are endocrine disruptors. And let's see how we do for the next three to six months. So in fact you can actually either gain weight or maintain a heavier weight if you're getting a lot of these chemicals from even food packaging or cooking materials, not just from the chemicals in food, water and personal care products. Exercise is a wonderful way to help release those fatty chemicals by shrinking fat cells when you're running, when you're doing any type of aerobic exercise that's sweating and even weight loss can shrink those fat cells. So next time you're running, you're doing exercise, you're chasing after your kids or your animals. Just think of it as detoxing through good old healthy anthropologic aerobic exercise and using your body's natural detox ability to reduce chemical burden from these endocrine disrupting chemicals.
