Do We Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Day Even if It’s Not Sunny Outside?
15 Dec 2025 · 6 min
Rachel Varga explains that UVA rays age skin and UVB rays burn it, and both penetrate clouds. She recommends mineral sunscreens with zinc or titanium dioxide over chemical filters, which last 6 to 7 hours versus 1 to 3 hours.

You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners.
Those brighteners don't actually clean anything.
They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze.
It looks like a dryer sheet, but.
It'S actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

Oh my gosh. This is a question I also seem to get every single day is do we need to wear sunscreen every day even if it's not sunny outside? And that is 100% yes. And let me just give everybody kind of like a little bit of a UV lesson here. Right? So we're going to talk about UV 101. Here's exactly what you need to know about UV rays. So there's, there's a number of different types of radiation out there. And from the sun we get UVA and UVB rays. So UVA rays are those rays that you're getting on the cloudy rainy days. So say, for example, you're driving or you're walking and it's generally between the hours of eight to six and you don't need your car headlights or flashlight to illuminate your path. But it's not really bright and sunny. You're getting a lot of UV A rays. So those are the aging rays. This is primarily what's actually reaching quite deep into the skin and creating most of your collagen loss and also contributing to things like age spots, brown spots, things like that, and accelerated aging. So then we have the UVB rays. So these are the rays that you get when it's really sunny outside. You can think of the UVB rays like the burning rays. Those are the ones like for myself, when I go outside, I'll start to get a little bit rosy, usually within 20 or 30 minutes. However, I do work with some nutraceuticals that give me antioxidant protection from the inside out. And also it's really the combination of the UVA and the UVB rays that are contributing to a lot of my clients aging. And I'll work with clients that are in their 40s to 60s and they meet with me either in the clinic or online and they'll say to me, rachel, I never go in the sun, but why do I have all these brown spots? And it's really, it's that cumulative exposure to the UVA, UVB rays. So going from the house to the shops, 5 minutes, 10 minutes here and there, that's actually what creates the cumulative effect of photo aging on the skin. So here's the kicker, guys. We're at home a little bit more now. We're on our devices. We're on our laptop or cell phone or tablets, our TVs. We have led lights in our home, by the way. I do not have LED lights in my home. I have halogen lights only. And what we've learned over the last few years, and I actually started to hear about this a couple years ago at different events and studies being brought to my attention was the blue light. The blue light from our devices actually reaches deeper than the UVA and the UVB rays. So even if you're kicking it at home, you're working from home and you're on calls all day long or whatever, you are actually getting UV damage inside your house or even next to a window. On my social media, Rachel Varga Fishel I actually have a really great photo of someone who on their right side of their face was constantly next to a window. And they actually had quite a significant change between the left and right side of the face because the right side was getting sun exposure even through the glass. So, yes, you're certainly wanting to wear sunscreen every single day. But there's two kinds of sunscreen. There's chemical UV filters, avobenzone, Oxybenzone. If you check your sunscreen product like your BB cream primer, your moisturizer or foundation with sunscreen, if it has any of those ingredients, I literally want you to throw it out right now. Now, because those are hormone mimicking and hormone disrupting ingredients, they're also killing our coral reefs and negatively impacting our water supply. So stop using those right away. What I want you to use is more of a mineral, medical grade sunscreen. And jj, I have sent you one of my favorite sunscreens. It does actually also act as a primer. It gives a little bit of color and even has some antioxidants added to it. And it's talc free and it uses both zinc and titanium dioxide. So. So the benefit to using a mineral sunscreen is that it's actually going to give you longer protection. So more like that six to seven hours with a mineral sunscreen as opposed to the one to three hours that you're going to get with an over the counter chemical UV filter. It's really important that you understand the differences between sunscreens. If you think, oh, my sunscreen stings my eyes, it's the chemical UV filter ones that are doing just that. So literally using your sunscreen every day is not only going to help to protect the collagen that you have reduce accelerated aging like age spots, broken capillaries, sagging skin, but it's also going to help to protect you from skin cancer. And the clinical data is out. It is definitely important for you to use your sunscreen every single day to prevent skin cancer.
