Does Hyperthyroidism Affect Estrogen Levels?
15 Dec 2025 · 9 min
Dr. Michael Ruscio addresses whether hyperthyroidism changes estrogen levels. He says there's no definitive evidence either way, but outlines two plausible mechanisms: faster estrogen clearance from a higher metabolic rate, or increased ovarian production. Lab testing can help distinguish thyroid symptoms from hormone-driven ones.

Hey, it's J.J. here.
You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners.
Those brighteners don't actually clean anything.
They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze.
It looks like a dryer sheet, but.
It'S actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing.
I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes.
Out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

Okay. So does hyper thyroidism, meaning too much thyroid hormone, often caused by Graves disease, impact estrogen levels? I actually don't know. I don't know that anything definitive there has been demonstrated. We do know that hormone levels can impact autoimmunity and this may be why there tends to be many autoimmune conditions that have a higher prevalence in women as compared to men. That doesn't happen for every autoimmune condition, but there is a lean in the direction of more autoimmunity in females. So there's the estrogen to hyperthyroidism connection, potentially through the mechanism that most hyperthyroidism is caused by autoimmunity. But what impact does it have in reverse? Meaning what impact does the estrogen have on the hyperthyroidism? I don't think that has really been demonstrated. So not sure exactly what the answer there is. I'll speculate that it is potential that if one has hyperthyroidism that may cause. Well, we could make a speculation here to either direction. Hyperthyroidism, because it increases metabolic rate, may lead to an increased clearance and metabolism and detoxification of estrogen on the one hand, but on the other hand it may actually lead to increased metabolism in the ovaries and therefore increased production of. Again, I don't know that this has been adequately answered. If it has, it has escaped my gaze. There definitely is a connection between hormones and hyperthyroidism. One thing for people to keep in mind, and this is something that you will see in the clinic when working with a hyperthyroid patient, some of the symptoms of female hormone imbalances like anxiety, feeling hot and a racing heart, can also be caused by female hormones. So it is important to try to parse these out and adjudicate if the symptoms that one is looking at are being caused by the hyperthyroidism or as I've seen some cases when the hyperthyroidism is under control A few years later, someone comes in saying, my heart is racing, I'm having hot flashes and I'm having insomnia. And because of their history with hyperthyroidism, they assume it's the hyperthyroidism flaring. You can quantify that with some lab testing. And if the numbers on the thyroid look normal, then consider looking to the female hormones, which fortunately there's some great herbal medicines that can help to balance and correct levels of and then remedy the racing heart, the hot flashing, the depression, the anxiety that can be driven there. So I don't have an awesome answer there to the question technically, but hopefully some of those tidbits help with how to navigate this in your own case.
