EMFs, Cell Phones, and Wireless Devices: Hidden Harms & How to Protect Yourself with Dr. Joe Mercola
15 Dec 2025 · 49 min
Dr. Joe Mercola argues that wireless devices damage cells through oxidative stress and calcium channel activation, causing fatigue, tinnitus, and infertility. He recommends airplane mode, Faraday bags, wired internet, and keeping phones away from your body, plus magnesium and molecular hydrogen to counter the effects.

If you notice that you really do not like to be around fluorescent lights. Bing, bing, bing. That is a massive clue. You are EMF hypersensitive. Here's JJ Virgin Triple board certified nutrition and fitness expert and four time New York Times best selling author. It's time to reignite wellness.
I think the best way to start this one off is say fasten your seat belts. Oh my gosh. Like today we are going to dive in to 5G EMFs, cell phones, wireless and really how all of these things are impacting your health. The risks, the dangers, but more importantly what you can do to protect yourself from all of these. Some things you can do to protect yourself and also recover. So the the title of this one, I love it is EMF Cell Phones and Wireless Hidden Harms and How to Protect Yourself. And I have back with me popular guest and my good friend Dr. Joe Mercola. I'm sure you know who he is. He has the number one natural health website in the world educating and empowering millions of subscribers to take control of their health. He is the Mindshare Pinnacle Award winner last year for all that he has done for our industry, for leading, for taking the hits. He's a New York Times bestselling author and he was 25 years as a physician to thousands of patients before he decided he was just going to spend his time and focus on his interest in technology and passion for health where he created Mercola.com and I will be linking by the way to his website, to our past interviews, to his books, Big shout out to Keto Fast and his new book on EMFs. And he is just out there being a crusader and a pioneer, a wellness champion and a visionary who is helping, you know, move the needle and make the changes we need to our current healthcare system. And boy, and just, just a great all around guy. Now before I dive in and we start digging through this and this is a in depth interview, you'll want to listen to it a couple times. But before we do, I want to do a shout out to my new pal Palmer Kippola. And it's so funny. I just did an interview with her and I went over, how do you say your name? She's like, is it Kipola? Is it Kipola? So love this name. Palmer Kip. Now I'm like, I think it's Coppola. Here we go. She gave me a five star review on Apple itunes. Golden Health Nuggets is the title, she says, bite sized morsels that carry a powerful punch. Packaged and presented beautifully by health and wellness pioneer JJ Virgin. Thank you so much, Palmer. And I'd love to give you a shout out. So just quick little reminder to rate and review the show. It helps a ton. And make sure you put your name in there so I can shout you out. All right, I'll be back in a moment with my buddy Dr. Joe Mercola to dive into all things EMFS.

Dr. Joe Mercola, welcome back. So good to have you here.
Well, it's great to be here, jj.
Well, you're always a crowd favorite. Everybody loves Joe. So I am super excited, super excited and a little bit terrified to be digging into the conversation that we're going to be digging in today. And big applause for you doing. First of all, whenever I need to know about anything, it's so great to have you as a resource because you just go dig so far into the research and then not just that this is the key important thing, you also figure out what the heck we should do about it. So today we are going to be tackling and I love the requested title you had with EMF'd cell phones and wireless hidden harms and how to protect yourself. And we're gonna be really digging into cell phones. And I know you've had some yelled at me maybe a little bit about my cell phone.
I encourage you to reconsider your strategy.
Well, thank you for holding me accountable. And let's dig in because you've said cell phones are the cigarettes of oh my gosh. And I would never smoke. So.
Yeah, yeah, of course you're committed to being healthy. So. And, and it's no surprise that you have that position because the wireless industry has been very cleverly copying the tobacco industry and we all know what they did to confuse and deceive and manipulate the public for decades about the truth. And the sad tragedy is that the wireless industry is even more, more effective than this tobacco industry because the tobacco industry never captured the federal regulatory agencies and wireless did. They own the fcc. The former lobbyist, the main lobbyists of the wireless industry, which incidentally, by the way, is every bit as big as pharma. It's a trillion dollar industry. People don't know that. Trillion dollars. So the head lobbyist was appointed the head of the FCC, which is the primary regulatory commission for EMFs. So it is the most egregious example of the fox guarding the henhouse that you could imagine. And this tobacco industry never did that. You had The Surgeon General, CFR, Coop back in the 80s and the CDC and the EPA all warning the public. Every federal agency was warning the public about smoking. That is not happening here.
I can't think of a federal agency that I've heard of this morning about cell phones.
Their consensus is that there's no danger. And that's what I'm attempt to Destroy the myths that they've created essentially in the book and the science behind it, and walk people through. It took me three years of research and writing to do this book. Three years, That's a long time. It's longer than most of my books. So.
Yeah, and then I would assume that a lot of what we're going to learn isn't going to even start showing up for years ahead of us.
Oh yeah, we're a massive guinea pig experiment. There's no question.
Okay, so let's dig into finishing 5G.
That's just like smoking. When you smoke for a day or a month or a year, you're not going to get sick from it. There's no way. It takes decades. In many ways, they're almost identical with respect to the time course of the disease that they.
So we really don't know yet how bad this is going to be.
We have some strong suggestions and we've seen a lot of prominent celebrities come down. I mean, we have two senators, Senator Ted Kennedy, and more recently, oh, his name escapes me. Republican candidate for the President. Last time, McCain. John McCain. Yeah. Okay, that's away from a brain tumor from cell phones.
Oh, well, now how do they know that it was a brain tumor from cell phones?
Well, they're not going to say that, but it was the tumor right over where he held his cell phone. It's interesting. It's this because it's ipsilateral. It's on the same side as where you hold your cell phone. So obviously most people are right handed, so it's going to be in the right hand. But you know, you got lefties getting on the left side. And the same thing. When women put their bone in their bra, you get it exactly where they put their cell phone. And you normally don't get tumors in the medial side of the breast. It's usually on the lateral side.
Yes, And I had a habit of doing that, but I do not do that anymore. I stopped, I don't do it anymore. And I'm detoxing and taking Annatto and all sorts of things.
You could do it as long as you put it in airplane mode.
Yes. I'm trying to undo the damage here and I'd love to talk about that too, but let's talk first. 5G.
Yes.
What is it and why should we be scared about this?
Well, 5G is sort of the advanced version of 4G and it essentially uses shorter wavelengths, some as short as millimeter wavelengths. And as a result of the change in the frequency, they can transmit More data, so greater speed. So normally your phone, your 4G phone is about 10 megabytes per second, but 5G is like 100 times faster looking 5, 7, 800 megabytes per second. It's crazy fast. And there's a lot of confusion on this because some people like, or some companies like AT&T cause the confusion by claiming they have 5G and they even put it on their phones, but it isn't. You can easily check this by just doing going to fast.com, which is the site you can go on your browser, on your phone and just do it and do a test and it'll show you how much, what your speed is. And if it's like 10 or 15, it's not 5G, which is much faster. So that's the main benefit, is that it's faster. And when we were at 3G, which was usually below a meg a minute, is kind of almost useless. And the latency was so high, that improvement from 3G to 4G was pretty dramatic. But the average experience that the user is going to perceive from 4 to 5 is almost minuscule. They're not almost going to even notice it because it's already so good. 10 megs per second is higher than you get in many hotels.
So what's the difference then between 4G and 5G on the impact of your health? And is 5G just going to be everywhere or is it only going to be in certain places? Like what's.
Well, that's a really good question. So we don't really know. More than likely it's going to be worse, but just based on the fact that these shorter wavelengths are unable to penetrate physical structures as easily as 4G. So that means that you need more transmitters. So there's going to be exponentially more transmitters. So that's going to increase the public exposure. And it gets even worse. I'm a big fan of Elon Musk. I've had Teslas for eight years. And you have a Tesla or two. Yes, and your garage. So he also has another company called SpaceX. And SpaceX has spun off a venture called Starlink S T A R L I N K. And they have submitted petitions for approval for 42,000. 42,000 satellites, low earth orbiting satellites that are going to bay the entire globe with 5G frequencies. These satellites are going to be flying about 100, 200 miles up. Normally they're like 2,000 or up to 20,000 miles, these satellites. So it's coming. They've already got 60 up and the projections are they're going to be putting up like 60 every month or so so that it will be.
God, it's like we're just getting bathed in this.
It's getting worse and worse. And it's not just humans that this affects. And we didn't talk about the effect on biology, but it affects birds, plants, bees, trees. You know, it's essentially nearly all biology on the planet is going to be impacted by these exposures.
Now let's look at, I mean we all know that the dangerous issue with things like X rays, how does this compare to that?
Well, X rays are ionizing radiation. That is they can spin off electrons off of different elements. And these electrons are essentially free radicals and they can cause damage. So in the case of X rays they spin off, they knock an electron off of water in the nucleus and that causes a hydroxyl free radical. And that can, has a lot of. That's an indirect damage. But the frequencies are so short and so powerful that they can directly break DNA in the nucleus. But that more likely they cause it by causing the secondary free radical from hydroxyl free radical in the nucleus. Which is exactly, exactly how the non ionizing frequencies in your cell phone and your wi fi closet, not by directly breaking the DNA bonds, but by spinning off these oxidative stress free radicals. Specifically it's peroxy nitrite that gets catalyzed, we believe, and it causes carbonate free radicals in the nucleus that essentially does the same end result, breaks DNA bonds. And the fact that ionizing radiation like X rays causes cancer is non controversial. This is absolutely accepted by every scientific discipline. And what they don't accept is that non isoning can by this mechanism I just described.
So this is not accepted as.
No, no, no, no, it's not. Not in most conventional scientific circles. They do not. They have bought hook, line and sinker the propaganda of the wireless industry, which has been carefully spinned off to protect their vested interests. I mean these are multiple tens hundreds of billions of dollars in revenues are going to be generated.
But how can you disregard science if the process is. This is what it does.
You could say the same thing with tobacco. I mean, you remember very clearly you had the CEOs of all four or five major tobacco companies testifying before a conference that A, before Congress. Did I say conference Congress, that their product was not addictive and B, it didn't cause cancer. Every one of them did. And then when they got the depositions in the internal memos, when the attorney general sued him, it all came to the front and truth was uncovered. And the same process is going to happen. It's just going to be 20, 30, I guess.
You look at, you go, you look at mercury infection fillings, you look at like artificial sweeteners. You can just start to go down the list of these things. This is just way worse, though. Like it's going to be. We're going to be all bathed in this.
Yeah. Unfortunately there are, you know, I don't want to be Debbie Downer and say this. The sky is falling and, you know, we better just, you know, bite the bullet now and just say goodbye. Because there are things you can do. And that's what I discuss in the book. There are lots of things you can do. And let me give you a benefit because I think we've talked a lot of negative things before we.
Even before we go to. Because I know we're going to talk about things we can do. I personally am just going to move to Iceland. Oh, my gosh, you have to.
That's not going to matter. Well, darling's going to be up there.
Let's talk first about just some of the symptoms if someone was exposed so they're just aware. And then let's talk about what the heck you can do.
Well, probably most common was fatigue, lack of energy. That's a nebulous pervasive symptom. But that clearly can be an issue. But some that are more specific. Actually there's a symptom that you can have if you notice that you really do not like to be around fluorescent lights. Bing, bing, bing. That is a massive clue. You are emf hypersensitive. Now, the, the damage, the biological damage that these frequencies cause is the same to everyone, but the symptoms that they cause are different based on your biology. So if you're sensitive to flesh and lights, then you definitely have a problem. Another common symptom is tinnitus or tinnitus. So ringing in the ears. So it's just amazing how common that symptom is. And it's nearly or very frequently related to EMF exposures and people don't know this. Another common one is pervasive is are these cardiac arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, V tach, well, not V tach, but even ventricular arrhythmias and clearly contributed to by the EMF exposures. Infertility is another one. So Alzheimer's, adhd, these are all pretty well documented to have not just correlation, but causation component.
Wow. So. And then you look at like some of the other things that are coupled into this. And then you've got a whole hodgepodge between the toxicity, the emfs. Right. It's just one piles up on the next. Because I'm thinking about some of these things like you mentioned add, and you go, all right, we've got the emfs, but then we've also got the crappy food and then we've got, you know, so it all, it all adds up. And if one thing isn't the actual cause, it could just push you over the edge, I would imagine.
Yeah. The original title of the book was going to be the Existential Threat to Humanity, because you've got it causing Alzheimer's on the elderly. So you got 50% of the population coming down with Alzheimer's. We're moving towards 50% of the kids being born on the spectrum. So you've got half the kids being born are on the spectrum and half the adults are demented. And then there, then the people in the middle are infertile. That's a prescription for the collapse of social structure. So that's where we're heading. But I'm. I'm thinking that we'll wise up before we get.
It's time to now bring up some positive things.
Yeah.
All right, so what the heck do we do? And, you know, best thing is to know that this is here so we can actually do something about it. What do we do?
Just be aware of becoming. And that's why I wrote the book, because there's a lot of background you need to know and I go into it in great depth and detail. It's highly referenced so that you'll have ammunition to use in case you need to convince your friends, family or relatives. Because the science has to be there, it can't be fluffy stuff. And I think this is, I believe this is the best book written on the topic to date. Not only for concisely and succinctly covering the science, but also providing really valuable recommendations because I, because of my position, I'm able to reach out to the key people in the country, in the world, and collaborate with them and they help write the book. I mean, I'm not the expert on this, they are. And they agreed to work with me and come up with some solid recommendations, which is in the book. And by the way, because the recommendations are. The best part of the book is chapter seven. I'm giving them away.
I know, I'm so excited.
I'm giving them away for free.
We're going to put all of this I'm going to link to the book, I'm going to link to your, your notes on that on chapter seven. So we'll do that, all that and also over to your website, of course, because I know that you've written this book. But there's going to be new information that you'll be updating all the time as well. So all of that, I'm going to put that all@jjvirgin.com 5G and so you will get that chapter 7 I will link over so you can get that. But what are. Let's give people some of the things they should start to think about right now that they can take action on.
Well, let me tell you why you want to do that, because we've painted a pretty bleak picture that looks like it's the end of life almost. I just want to explain a process called hormesis, which I suspect many of your viewers and listeners have heard of before, and that is Nietzsche kind of described it a few centuries ago, is that whatever doesn't make you, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. And there's another version called adaptive homeostasis, which is somewhat similar but a little bit different. But anyway, the importance of this concept here is to understand that not all EMFs are bad because within the spectrum of EMFs, we have sunlight, natural sunlight is an EMF. And we know that exposure to sunlight, at least if you're rational and intelligent and understand this and not a dermatologist who are highly irrational and confused about their the need for skin exposure to sunlight. Now excessive exposure to sunlight can be harmful, but within sunlight we have actually there's an ionizing radiation called ultraviolet radiation. And that can actually cause health though, because we know that it increases vitamin D in your skin. It also increases nitric oxide in your skin, which is actually another free radical. But it can be very beneficial, especially for cardiovascular health. So I believe pretty strongly, I think there's a very compelling evidence to support it, that regular exposure to sunlight is healthy, but too much can be dangerous and somewhat similar. Now, the frequencies for these EMFs, especially the wireless radiation, is lower than Sunlight. The new 5G is getting closer to visible light, but they're still lower. So it's pretty, they're somewhat close though. So it's not too far of a reach to understand that there could be a biological hormetic component. It's very similar to there is the exposure to sunlight. So that if you can have limited exposure, it actually causes changes within your biology to spin, spin off a Beneficial reaction. It's. And that's called hormesis. So I think that's possible. There's no. I want to make it clear. There's no studies that show this. It's just. It's just my speculation. And I. And I'd like to have hopeful speculation. So I think this is one of them. So this. This provides us some bad. Some rationale to be hopeful and to be motivated and catalyzed to engage in behaviors that can create the rest period. We need to recover from this pervasive exposure, because we know if you were exposed to ultraviolet light 24. Seven, you're looking at cancer down the road. I mean, there's no question it's dangerous, continuous. But just to pulse it, it's fine. So we need to limit our exposure. And the primary exposure that most people have is really their cell phone. And there's an interesting spin off on this, so I'll explain what you can do. But just yesterday, I'm not a big fan of the New York Times, but they did a really excellent investigative article on privacy abuse issues with the cell phone industry. You may not be aware of it, but there are data warehouses that compile all the information on your location. And they either purchase it or gather from the apps on your phone. And it's supposed to be anonymous, but there's no way in the world it is, because it's so easy to identify. If you have this dot that's going from your home to your work every day, they know who this person is. So they are recording every single place that you go, because more than likely you are carrying your cell phone and it's not an airplane, and they know exactly where you are every minute of the day. This is not hearsay. This is fact. The New York Times discovered. I mean, they have tens of thousands of people. They document, they can show where they're going and everything. It's crazy. So I'll throw you the link for that too, because it's really an important thing. And they also give you information how you can change the privacy settings on your phone so they don't do this to you and you don't disclose. But anyway, if you engage in the behavior of protecting yourself from the radiation by putting your phone simply in airplane mode, that pretty much aborts all the dangerous side effects. So that would be number one. And so you can say, well, I've got. I mean, now listen, we know it's convenient to have your cell phone. I mean, that is probably one of the. Aside from the Internet, one of the best innovations that we've come up with, but primarily because it uses the Internet. If the Internet didn't exist and you had your phone, it'd be relatively useless. I think it'd be a fancy calculator that you could a phone because most of the benefit is from being connected to the cloud. So. But you can get most of those benefits too by being online with a wired connection on your computer, either your notebook or your desktop. So most people's notebooks or desktops are connected by wireless. So that doesn't have to be. You can hook up through an ethernet cable. And if you do that, kudos to you. But you got to remember to put your desktop computer or notebook into airplane mode. Otherwise it's still emitting the radiation. So just because it's hooked up to a wire and getting the signal from there doesn't mean it stopped emitting. You have to physically turn it. And that's pretty straightforward. It's not rocket science to put your device into airplane mode. So that would be the major component. And you know, it's important to understand too. Like everyone watching this can remember that when they were on the Internet in last century, in the, in the 1900s, they did not go on the Internet wirelessly.
Right.
That's a relatively new innovation, pretty much sparked by the introduction of the iPhone One in 2007. There was certainly WI fi transmitters before then, but became popular around that time. So it's really 10, 15 years where it's become pervasive. So almost everyone's connecting to the Internet through a wire and there's nothing wrong with that. And interestingly, that is a far better alternative than 5G, but they don't make as much money on that. If you could use fiber optic cable, you will get Even faster speeds in 5G and a lower latency and just a better signal overall than you will through a wireless signal. But they don't want to do that because they're not going to generate as much revenues, which is sad. But there are other alternatives. Now there are some applications of course, where you absolutely need a wireless signal, like for self driving cars and things. But for many other innovations, especially in a home, all you need is a wire signal. It's a little more hassle factor. So the next so take care of your phone. That's the number one thing to realize is your phone is really the primary device that's radiating you. It's not all these cell phone towers out there, although they can be problematic.
It'S more along the phone. So let's say that you can't have it on airplane mode all the time. When you do have it turned on, how close, like how far away should you try to keep it from your body? And is there, are there things you can do to protect yourself when it is, you know, on WI fi mean.
When it's not in airplane mode?
When it's not in airplane mode.
Yeah.
Yeah. So because see there's, there's three things you've got when you put an airplane mode that doesn't necessarily. You still have other signals potentially could be available like Bluetooth. It depends on the phone, but there's Bluetooth, WI fi, personal hotspot and data. And in many phones you have to turn them off independently. Interestingly, I just purchased an iPhone because I'm not a fan of Google in any way, shape or form and am not using an Android operating system anymore. And notice that even though Google still has the best mapping system, all Google Maps, you can have your phone in airplane mode. No data, no location. Well, I probably have location on, but you can, it still works. Google Maps still works when your phone is in airplane mode, which is crazy. Yeah. I don't know if you knew that, but it does. I've done it every a number of times now. So the point being is that your phone, even though it's in airplane mode, is still probably is connecting and causing radiation. So the next step above that, if you really want to be secure, well, the ultimate is to turn it off. But if you still want to keep it on with the convenience because it takes a while to boot up, is you put it in a little bag that is called a Faraday bag, just like Michael Faraday who they named the term after. And it's essentially a little bag that has folds over and can create this cage that essentially captures all the signals so nothing comes out. And it's nice to have that. I do that routinely because sometimes you know your, your intention is to keep your phone in airplane mode, but you forget because you just had to get a text or something and you forgot to turn it off. So if you put it in the, in the bag, you're not going to get blasted. So it's, it's a backup safety. It's. I wouldn't use as a primary, it's a backup and plus it will stop those extraneous radiations and, and any company from tracking you. So because if your phone even in airplane mode, they, it's possible they still control, still contract, can track you. Although if you implement the privacy settings that Recommended that they advised in the New York Times article. I think you could abort most of that. So that's the phone. Any questions? Any more questions on that?
I think that's good. Got it.
Okay. All right. The next one that really is a big deal is your WI FI router, which is the way most people connect to the Internet. Almost all of us have it. And it's important to know that you don't have to have it in WI fi. You don't have to have WI fi permitting your entire house. It's like putting a cell phone tower in your home. It really is. It's very similar. And you're going to get similar levels of intensity of the exposure to the radiation. So the minimum you should do is turn it off at night. And there's some devices you can use to implement that, like simple mechanical timer. You plug it in and it turns, you set the times and it keeps it on during the day and off at night. Now that's the minimum. Because why would you want to radiate you and your family at night when you're sleeping, when you're not using the Internet? That doesn't make any sense. But even better, we take the next step and just stop the wireless completely and switch over to wired. Now if you are renting, it's a bit more problematic because you wouldn't want to go through the expense of running cables through the, through the home and such. But if you have your own home, it's probably not a bad investment. If you are renting, you could still run the wires, the external wires. If you have a small home, just run them to a switch and from the switch you can run these other wires. And switches are pretty cheap. They're like an ethernet switch. Could be five ports, 10 ports, they're well under $50. And you can get 50 port switches and you could just run a wire to every device you need. In my home I have actually 248 port switches. I have 100 Internets places where I can plug in because I have a big house and I go around all and I just plug in. So I carry my notebook with me and I just plug in. Now it's a bit of a hassle if you have a notebook. Almost all the new notebooks are thin, so they're not wide enough to accommodate an ethernet adapter. So you have to have an, an ethernet port. So you have to have an adapter that goes in the USB port. And those are easy to get. There's, you know, USB A's USB C's and you just use them. And I've got, like about a dozen in case people come over and they want the Internet, they can just tug into one of my wires. So there's no exposure in my home. And it's not that terribly expensive considering the benefit that you get, especially for your family. Especially if you've got kids. I mean, because kids are getting blasted.
Yeah. I worry about my boys. Like, you know, they'll spend their whole lifetime with this, basically. And now, age 10, some kids are.
Even worse because there's a large percentage of the population that are putting their phone not in airplane mode under their pillow. It's just crazy. Why would they do that?
Who would put their phone under their pillow?
Because they're not aware. This is danger. This is like someone who's smoking who just never heard that it could cause any problems. It is not foolish. It is not irresponsible because they are not being told.
I just worry about my kids putting their phones in their pocket. I was like, do not put your phone in your pocket.
Yeah, yeah, That's a good prescription to reduce weight. It limits your likelihood of being grandma. I know.
I was like, I want kids. Don't do that.
Stop it.
So, all right, well, that gives. You know, those are some very basic, tangible things that people can do. They're not. And as you said, this might be a bit of a pain, but I think back to.
It's certainly inconvenience, no question.
But. But the reality is, I mean, let's go back 30 years when we got our first computers, and they were those humongous things on your desk, and you had to have a little phone cord. I mean, this is like, we're getting to be. We're spoiled. This is not that big of a deal to do.
Yeah. I first went online, I think, in the 70s, well before the web. We had the DOS prompts and monochrome monitors and the acoustic couplers with your phone, and it was a whole different world back then.
Yeah. I just remember having to go get into my grad school's, like, computer and, like, some kind of hookup, and it just was. I never could figure out what the heck I was doing.
Oh, yeah, it was a mess. Yeah. The mid-90s, those things changed. They started to switch over to integrate the couplers, at least acoustic couplers, into the circuits on the computer. So you didn't have to. You actually could plug it in.
So here's one last question about all of this for people now listening, that go, all right, these are all things that I can do to start reducing my exposure. But is there anything that you can do? You've been exposed. Are there things that you can do to help you recover from that exposure, Repair from that exposure?
Yeah. So what is the dam? We're pretty confident the precise mechanism is only guessed at this point, but there seems to be a pretty consistent consensus that the damage is done through increased oxidative stress and secondary inflammation and all those pathways that get disrupted. So what you want to do is lead a healthy lifestyle. So that involves making sure that you're abusing your body like the vast majority of the population does. So I firmly believe that eating, time restricted eating, and cyclical ketosis will help your body metabolize fat as a primary fuel and generate far less reactive oxygen species than secondary oxidative damage. So that is one and ketones. And your body will generate ketones, which is a water soluble fat made in your liver. And those by themselves are very powerful. In fact, one of the primary researchers in the country is Richard Veach out of the NIH, and he's an elderly guy in his 80s or 90s and still active and writes papers, but his team is actually doing studies right now with NASA giving them exogenous ketones to mitigate against the ionizing radiation damage in space. Wow. Yeah. So again, the result, the impacts, the mechanism is pretty similar. So if it works for ionizing radiation, which is what you're going to be exposed to when you're flying too, at 35,000ft, that can be useful. So that's one of the reasons why you don't really want to eat, at least be in nutritional ketosis, be metabolically flexible when you're flying. But you could take exogenous ketones too. That's a little trick too, for those who whatever shape, whatever way, they are recommended to get a CAT scan. That is a massive, massive form of ionizing radiation exposure, literally at least 100 times more than a chest X ray. And you really only want to get those if your life depends on it, but for whatever reason it does depend on it and it's elective, then at least you want to treat it like you're getting chemotherapy. And we know that fast for a day or so, and then maybe you fast a day after the exposure, you're really going to decrease the damage. So fasting and taking exogenous ketones is one of the strategies you can use if you're going to have an elective CT scan. Now, if it's an emergency or an auto accident or Something if you've got appendicitis, they want to rule out that might be a little more complex. But if you. A lot of times they're elective. And if they are, then you want to do that. But you could do this. So that's a bit impractical to do every day. But just being a nutritional ketosis on a regular basis is going to help lower the oxidative damage stress.
We're going to link to the interview we did on Keto Fast and also to that book that. I love that book so much. Such a good book. Oh, my gosh, everybody needs that book. Okay, perfect. That makes a ton of sense. Any other recommendations?
Yeah, there's a lot of things you can do.
So I'm sure a lot of this is in the book, right?
Oh, yeah.
I mean, there's like, you'll want to grab the book, obviously, and we'll link to that.
Yeah. But magnesium. Most of the population is deficient in magnesium. And you know, one of the speculative mechanisms that it is that it activates for EMFs, they activate calcium voltage gated calcium channels in your cell membranes. So what you want, and there's strong evidence, a suggestion that calcium channel blockers can limit the damage. Well, a natural calcium channel blocker is magnesium. And since most of us are deficient, it would seem wise to at least augment your intake to the point where you're at least getting the rda. So that's a good strategy. And I love molecular hydran. It's one of my favorite supplements. It's just, it's a selective antioxidant. And what does that mean? It doesn't indiscriminately suppress free radicals, because some free radicals, like nitric oxide, are actually beneficial. And if you just suppress them indiscriminately, you can actually impair important biological functions. So molecular hydrogen doesn't work that way. It has its own feedback sensor. So if it senses excessive oxidative stress, then it actually sends signals to the nucleus to make endogenous antioxidants like catalase and superoxide dismutase and glutathione. Rather than taking it and saying, oh, I'm smarter than my body, I'm going to take all this sublingual glutathione. And that may actually cause problems. And then the other thing too to recognize is that there's NAD is really, really important. And a cousin of NAD is nadph, and that is a donor of electrons. And it actually was what recharges your internal endogenous Antioxidants. So. So when vitamin C or vitamin D get oxidized, they stop working and they donate their electron. But NADPH can donate it back and it kind of recycles it. But I go into this in great detail. One of the dangers of the EMF exposures is it lowers your NAD levels. And it does this because when you damage DNA, your body has these repair mechanisms and it uses an enzyme called parp, which is short for this complex name called poly ADP ribose polymerase, which they decided to change to ART. Earlier this year. But anyways, it's an enzyme. And when enzymes get activated, it sucks up 150nad molecules and it lowers your NAD levels. And David Sinclair, who's a professor of genetics at Harvard, has done a lot of research on the importance of and maintaining healthy NAD levels, which tend to decline as you age, but certainly get rapidly decelerated and lowered when you're exposed to emf. So maintaining healthy NAD levels, especially if you're older than 50 or 60, you're 20 or 30, becomes less of an issue because you have the intrinsic ability to replenish them. But that ability declines pretty significantly with age, especially if you're not exercising. So what are the things that you can do without taking NAD precursors or supplements? Two things that will radically increase by 30 to 40% your NAD levels. Do you know what those two things are?
I'm hoping it's exercise because you said exercise.
Exercise. Yes.
And sleep.
Fasting.
Awesome.
Yeah. So those are the two things. And I like time restricted eating better than fasting because that's a daily thing. So you can restrict your eating window to four to eight hours. And if you want to bump it up even more, not the window, but the benefits of time restricted eating is that right before you eat, you do intense exercise. And that just makes it like you're fasting for two or three days. You get the same similar benefits. You increase autophagy and you increase NAD production because it's. It improves the rate. There's a rate limited enzyme that makes NAD. It's called NAMPT, and it goes up by 30% when you exercise or you have this time restricted eating.
I just did that. That's what I did today. I went and did my burst training before I had my smoothie.
That is the best.
There you go.
That is the absolute best in that.
Gym that you came in. And I did not get to work out with you guys, but you and Brie and Joy worked out in, so.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
There.
Yes. Very cool. All right, so I think that is a wrap. You just downloaded a ton of information and you will definitely want to get the show notes to this one. Again, I'm going to link through that. We're going to link over to Dr. Joe's website to that chapter seven also to this book.
It's not even in the book because I just learned about it since the draft of the book was finished. It's a dipeptide, a molecule that's only in meat and that molecule is carnosine. Unbelievable. It's amazing stuff. So for those who are vegetarians, you may want to consider getting on some carnosine and that should significantly decrease the damage for me and maps and I did not know about it when I wrote the book.
So if someone eats grass fed grass. Finished.
Yeah. That's a couple times a week.
Are they getting enough or do they need a supplement?
That is a good question. I'm in a deep in the middle of research on this. You'll come back and in about two or three months after I finish my investigations.
All right.
But it's not an easy answer, unfortunately. But you know that if you're plant based or a vegan, you're going to be deficient.
Just yet another thing that you'll have to add into your plan if you're.
Plant based or vegan, carnosine, carnitine, choline and creatine.
You know, I always, I know some people do it for religious reasons and I always leave that alone. So yes. Just got a lot of extra stuff to take if you are doing that to make sure you stay healthy. So just want to throw that out there. Okay. So again, I'll put everything at jjvirgin.com forward/5G. Lots of stuff from this interview. My gosh. And I know you're going to get me that link to the New York Times too. So we'll follow up.
Oh yeah, that was, that just came out yesterday was very cool.
And, and thank you so much again for your time and the download. It's always awesome. And I'm going to immediately schedule another one with you so that we just keep them coming because you are a crowd favorite.
All right.
Like you are. We surveyed our community and you're like one of the top all time people for everybody.
Good. Well, thank you for allowing us to share this information because it's useless if people don't get it.
Right. Well, thank you for leading the charge on this one. Super appreciate it. And after the break, stay with me everyone. I'm going to come back and give you some action steps from today's interview. So I'll see you in a minute.
On ebay, every find has a story. Like if you're looking for a vintage band tee. Not just a tee, the band tee. You wore it everywhere until your ex stole it. Now you're on ebay and there it is. Same tee from the same tour. The things you love have a way of finding their way back to you. You especially on ebay. Shop ebay for millions of finds, each with a story. Ebay, things people love.
Alrighty. Welcome back. Okay, I will admit that I've had Dr. Joe over hanging out at the house and as you know, working out in the gym. But some of the things he's told me before I was writing down in the action items because this is when we talk about those as we still need to do so about let's talk all do them together, let's commit because it's super important. Okay so first of all, whenever you're, whenever you can phone is in airplane mode and don't put it into things like bras and pockets and all of that. Next up, switching over to wired Internet in your house. And also one of the things we've done is put, put the Internet on a timer so that your WI fi goes off if you do have it at night and comes back up in the morning. Super important. One of the cool things about the house we just moved into is the bedroom area is kind of like a bunker. Like it's even hard to get WI fi in there once we do have it turned on. So I was like, well that's kind of a benefit. Okay, so that's another one. And then getting one of those Faraday bags. And we will find that and link to that in the show notes. We're also going to link to the New York Times article. We're also going to link to chapter seven of the book so it talks about what you can do to remediate EMFs. Again, big shout out to time restricted eating. We've been talking a lot about that on the show. Exercise, exercise, exercise, always important. So shout outs to those as well. And we'll also link to the last past interviews and keto fast. And then one more thing, of course we'll link to some exogenous ketones because that was super cool and something I think I'm going to be taking with me now on the planes because I travel a lot and that's been something I've been worried about. So hope that served. You can grab all of this again@jjvirgin.com 5G and a quick reminder if you haven't done it yet, my gosh, subscribe. You do not want to miss any of the goodness. And while you're there, make sure you rate and review the show. Put your name in there so I can give you a shout out. Okey dokey. See you next time.
