Fitness Expert Shares Most Powerful Predictors on Healthspan

JJ Virgin argues grip strength and VO2 max are better predictors of longevity than weight. She outlines how to measure them cheaply, then recommends resistance training, protein, and mitochondrial support to preserve muscle and extend the years you stay physically capable.

When people talk about longevity, they usually focus on weight or body fat or what the scale says. But the strongest predictors of how long and how well you live actually have very little to do with any of that. In fact, two of the most powerful indicators of healthspan are grip strength and VO2 max. They reflect muscle function and energy capacity, and they tell us far more about independence and resilience than the number on the scale ever could. Muscle is not a vanity metric. It's not a cosmetic concern as we age. It's a foundational system. Now, in this video, I'm going to explain why muscle sits at the center of longevity, what grip strength and VO2 max really mean and how to test them, and what it actually looks like to take care of muscle if your goal, and I sure hope it is, is to stay strong, capable, and independent for decades. I want my legacy to be that we ditch the scale. The scale is not the metric that matters. Most people think that longevity is about living longer or keeping their weight in check, but neither of those tells you much about how well your body will actually function as you age. I mean, the reality is weight's not a longevity metric. Muscle function is. The scale doesn't tell you how strong or how capable or how resilient your body really is. It doesn't tell you anything about the quality of your muscle. The scale tells you what you weigh, not what that weight is made up of, and definitely not how well you're aging. I mean, you can lose weight and lose even more strength, endurance, and resilience. Because in fact, if anything, the scale's rewarding the wrong behavior because muscle's heavier, right? BMI, scale weight, body fat, they really miss what matters most because they're not measuring muscle quality, balance, mobility, stamina, strength, or independence. What actually predicts healthspan is measurable performance. And that's why metrics like grip strength and VO2 max matter more. So let's break down what those two metrics actually mean and why they matter so much. These are the biomarkers that actually predict healthspan. So grip strength is going to measure how much force your muscles can produce. It reflects overall muscle strength and neuromuscular function. It's not just looking at your hand strength, right? It's a proxy for overall strength. And low grip strength predicts worse health outcomes. It is associated with the higher risk of falls, disability, and loss of independence. In fact, we know people with the lowest grip strength have highest all-cause mortality. Now, VO2 max measures how well your body uses oxygen when you're putting out effort. It reflects your aerobic capacity, your energy production, and your overall cardiovascular fitness. And it is one of, if not the strongest predictor of longevity. Higher VO2 max is linked with lower mortality risk and greater resilience with age. And both of these metrics reflect muscle quality rather than body size. They tell you how well your muscles actually function, not how much you weigh. And together they give you this clear picture of your healthspan. Strength plus energy capacity determines how capable, how functional your body really is. Now, grip strength, super easy to measure. You just get a handgrip dynamometer. They're really inexpensive, but VO2 max is not so much. I still have PTSD from having to do this in grad school, but it's so worth it. And by the way, you can also do an easy one, a predictive VO2 max test like the Rockport 1-Mile Walk Test or the 3-Minute Step Test. I to do that with my clients since the '80s. So there's really no excuses because what you measure and monitor, you can improve. What makes these markers so powerful is that they change based on how well you're taking care of your muscles over time. So you will start to see really great improvements fairly quickly by starting to focus on them. Now, to quote my friend Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, muscle is the organ of longevity. When you look at grip strength and VO2 max together, you're really seeing how well your muscles generate strength and sustain energy And that's why muscle is the foundation of longevity. It's more than strength. It's definitely more than aesthetics. It's one of the main systems that determines how well your body functions as you age. It really runs your metabolic health because muscle plays a major role in blood sugar regulation, energy balance, and insulin sensitivity. So it's helping you support a healthier metabolism as you age. Plus, It protects balance and mobility. It's helping you prevent falls, supporting coordination. It keeps you moving with confidence. And of course, what's that helping you do? Preserve your independence, because this is what's allowing you to lift, to carry, to climb, to get up and down without having to rely on others. It also supports resilience. Stronger muscle helps you recover from illness, from injury, and from physical stress more effectively. But when muscle declines, Daily life feels harder, your energy drops, your recovery slows, and simple routine daily tasks start to require more effort. You got to use it and support it, or guess what? You lose it. So if muscle's the foundation of healthspan, the next question is how do we actually protect and support it as we age? So let's talk about how to support muscle for long-term healthspan. And I'm going to throw in here the idea of strengthspan too. So healthspan is how long you live free from disease and disability. It's about not getting sick. Strength span is how long you live physically capable, powerful, and resilient. It's about not being fragile. You can have a long health span and still have a short strength span. You can be disease-free but weak, unstable, and dependent. So we're really talking about strength span too, because that's what makes those extra years worth living. Think about health span's keeping you alive, disease-free. Strength span letting you live and live full out. And muscle is the foundation of both health span and obviously strength span. So the question becomes, how support it as your body changes with age. Muscle needs more than just effort as we age. I mean, here's the thing, resistance training and eating protein first matter, but they're not always enough on their own in midlife and beyond. I know it wasn't enough for me. And so I'm excited to share something that I've been taking now for 4 years. And I actually, since the time I got introduced to it, have never missed a day because it has made such a noticeable difference. It was an easy yes then when Timely asked me to collaborate with them which is great because they support me to get these videos out to you so you know what to do to age powerfully. Because supporting your muscle supports the markers that predict healthspan and strengthspan. When you support strength and cellular energy, you are supporting what grip strength and VO2 max are actually measuring. Cellular energy becomes a limiting factor as mitochondrial function declines. Muscles have less energy available to maintain strength and endurance and recovery, even when you're doing all the right things. If you're supporting your muscle, you're supporting your mitochondrial health, and healthy mitochondria are what help muscles generate energy efficiently, adapt to training, and recover between workouts. This is where Mitopure by Timeline comes in. It's truly a muscle-first strategy, which I love. I live by. Mitopure is the only clinically studied form of urolithinate. This is a postbiotic shown in human clinical trials, including in older adults, to support muscle strength and function by helping renew mitochondrial health. It does this through mitophagy. So mitophagy is the body's natural process of clearing out older, less efficient mitochondria so that you can make room for healthier ones. The goal, better muscle quality, not just more effort. And when you support mitochondrial renewal, muscles can use energy more efficiently over time, which supports strength, endurance, and resilience. I joke a lot that Mitopure feels like exercise in a bottle, but I want to be clear, it does not replace training. You gotta do the training first, right? You gotta do the training, gotta eat the protein. Mitopure works with training, not instead of it. Strength training is the signal, protein provides the building blocks, and Mitopure is the other leg of the three-legged stool here. It supports the cellular energy that allows muscles to actually respond and adapt. Now, consistency matters for your workouts, for your protein, and and for your Mitopure. As I said, I've been taking it every day since I found it 4 years ago. And Mitopure has made it super easy for you with their new amazing delicious Mitopure gummies. Just 2 a day. They're sugar-free, they're vegan, they're non-GMO and independently certified for quality. And it's such a smart, delicious way to support muscle so that your strength, your endurance, and your independence lasts longer, which is what we're all about, right? Now, if there's just one thing I want you to take away from this, it's that muscle is not just about strength or a genetics. It's truly about capability. It's about protecting your energy, your independence, and how well you live as you age. Grip strength and VO2 max are not just numbers. They reflect whether your muscle system is staying strong and energized as you age or it's not. Think of them as predictors, forecasters of the future. And that's why I look at muscle support from multiple angles. Strength training matters, protein matters, recovery matters, and supporting the cellular energy systems inside Muscle, mission critical. That is where Timeline and Mitopure fit into the muscle-first healthspan strategy. I don't see it as a replacement for training or nutrition. I see it as a support for the foundation underneath them, helping muscle stay more resilient and responsive over time.
