Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating, and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Hey, it's JJ Virgin. And welcome to the JJ Virgin Lifestyle show where I talk nutrition, exercise, mindset and lifestyle with some of the coolest people in the world. Plus, I give you tips that you can put into fast action to uplevel your health so that you can go out there and live that big life you're meant to live. Now, today's show is super cool. I have found the human Wikipedia. You are going to be blown away by this guy. Literally. He's just a walking, a walking, I'd say encyclopedia, but I'm dating myself. But as I was going through this interview with him, I said, oh my gosh, Sayer G. You are seriously the human Wikipedia. And what we are going to talk about today, we actually switched gears as we were getting ready to go on air because we realized to say, I realized that what my audience would probably love, all of us out there, is to talk about health hacks to lower your body fat. Oh, wait, wait, wait. It gets better to lower your belly fat. So body fat, overall belly fat specifically. I know you're going to love some of the cool info that he has to share on this. And I will tell you that the greatest, greatest part of all this is what you're going to hear throughout this interview is all the things that you can add into your diet to drop belly fat. I'm not talking deprivation. Take these things out. I'm talking about what things you can add. And I think a couple will surprise you. And I know that's a tease. And that's all I'm going to tell you about that. Because first I want to tell you a little bit about Sayer. But the biggest thing, again, as I was reading his bio to begin with, I went, oh gosh, this doesn't do this guy justice. And the minute I heard him talk, I went, that's it. I dubbed you the new human Wikipedia. So Sayergy and what you'll want to check out is greenmedinfo.com Sayergy created this website, greenmedinfo, and it is the coolest platform ever. It is evidence based natural health research. And so basically what you get from this is he has become the curator of amazing information and amazing people. Because sometimes, you know, I love the, I love the Internet and I love all the information we get, but sometimes you don't know if you're getting the real stuff or not. And that's where greenmed info comes on. So he founded that. He's on the board of governors for the National Health Federation and Fearless Parent. He's a steering committee member of the Global GMO Free Coalition, a reviewer at the International Journal of Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine, and he wrote the books Cancer Killers and the Dark side of Wheat, which by the way, you can get a free PDF of that@greenmed.com info.com so I am super thrilled and excited to welcome Sarah Gyan. So here you go. I'm going to introduce you to him. Let's do it. So let's do it. So, Sayer, welcome to the show.
Thank you for having me on jj. This is quite an honor.
Oh, I am so excited to share you with the audience. I mean, this first off, like for you to be on the show, you are now one of my heroes. As I dug into your work here, it's just amazing and you just have such an incredible resource for everyone listening. You definitely want to go to greenmedinfo.com this is your place to go so you can cut through all of the stuff out there on the Internet. Know that you are getting the truth. So I just love how you've curated all of these amazing people and amazing information. It's so great. Which means then you have amazing info to share. So talk about being at the forefront and what we are going to talk about today. Gosh, I know every single person who listens to my show and is involved in my community. It's like, this is the hot subject. So we are going to talk about belly fat. But what I really want to start with you on is, you know, I mean, I don't think there's really a woman out there says, gosh, I really love my belly fat. It's awesome. I love having a muffin top. It's fantastic. But you know, we all look at it from a vanity standpoint. But I mean, I know that's really not the issue with belly fat. I mean, we don't like the way it looks, but it is so devastating. So I'd love you just to talk about why belly fat is so much worse than just the muffin top piece of it.
Beautiful. Yeah. You know, it's so fascinating because in 2007, the journal circulation published a review where they looked at what are the primary risk factors for cardiac mortality, you know, the number one killer of women in the western world. And they found that actually abdominal obesity or belly fat was a far higher risk factor than actually actively smoking for heart attacks. So, you know, on the one hand, there's sort of a vanity factor. You know, no one wants to have a, you know, large belly. But on the other hand, it's probably far more relevant than blood lipids. You know, everyone's focused on repressing LDL levels. So this study kind of blew open this notion that, yes, it is important actually to do what we can to reduce belly fat. And the good news is there are things that you can do with your diet that are really easy to accomplish that.
Oh, well, there was a tease that you just threw out, like, do share especially. I think you had us at there are easy things that you can do on your diet. Yes, I can't wait to hear. Especially, you know, I always tell people the first thing that you can do to start to shift your weight is to change what's at the end of your fork. I mean, there's a whole lot of other things that are important, but boy, diet for making that fast shift is so give us those great hacks that you found for lowering your belly fat with your diet.
Well, one thing I must say is I'm impressed by your product line because there are few products out there that seem to really make an effort to exclude things like fructose, which is now almost in everything. And that's one of the main things that drives fat production in the midsection. In fact, it's so fascinating, jj, because the same pathways that create the, quote, hedonic effect of alcohol inebriation are the same that turn fructose into fat. And that's why fatty liver disease, non alcoholic, is actually almost universal. It's just a matter of degree in our culture. So really just eliminating something as simple as fructose from the diet, at least the isolated industrial forms, I mean, there's nothing wrong with getting fructose in the form of an organic apple. That's probably the number one thing in diet that we can change to pretty dramatically reduce midsection fat. But one of the best weeks, which I think you've had the bulletproof executive on, of course, is coconut oil. And, you know, it's amazing. There's three human clinical studies now, two in women and one in men, that show that just a tablespoon a day can significantly reduce midsection fat in just a matter of a month or so. And it's always amazing to me because you think, well, fat, actually burning fat. Well, if you pick the right kinds, coconut being probably the best, it can actually burn the belly fat. Yeah.
And, you know, it's yummy. As we just told you to add some fat to lose some weight. You know, it's not. I always love things that you can tell people about that are an ad rather than a takeaway because we do look so often taken away. And yes, Dave is one of my very best friends on the planet and we actually travel together. So it's. You know, he really does do this stuff. He really puts the butter on his steak and the coconut oil in his coffee. But we add. We add coconut oil into our shakes. We add. We use it to cook with, and it's just delicious. So it's not like this is a hard thing to do, or you're like, oh, gosh, I have to use some coconut oil. You know, it's like, it's delicious. Okay, so fructose. I am, you know, so down with that one. And I did go on a rant, I will tell you, Sarah, on fruit, because, yes, a piece or two of fruit a day, great. But, gosh, don't you see those people who are like, oh, okay, I can have fruit. Now all of a sudden, they're making these smoothies with, you know, five servings of fruit in them, and they're snacking on fruit and you're like, no, no, no, no, it's not. It's not just free. So what's your advice on that? Because I do. I. I've just learned over doing weight loss for 30 years that any advice you give then gets blown up into the extreme. So you always have to be careful.
Yeah, exactly.
But little is good. It doesn't mean that more is better. I agree.
I think that, you know, if there's anything that's clear about human physiology on the cellular level, is that you really look at it. We're primarily composed of protein and lipids, fats, and, of course, cholesterol. And if you look at the amount of carbohydrate in the body, it's not actually a huge amount. You have glycogen stores, not that can last you very long. Our carbohydrate requirements are much lower than we have been acculturated to believe. So, yes, I'd agree. I don't know that consuming fruit concentrates all day is really the way to go. So when you replace with good fats, you know, again, coconut is so fascinating because it's converted rather rapidly in the liver into energy, as well as ketone bodies, which are an excellent source for the brain as a backup energy supply. You know, unfortunately, the brain, especially when you start getting my age, you know, I'm like 43 now, you start to see that there's some insulin resistance that happens. And so just adding a little coconut oil into your diet can also really boost brain function significantly.
I'm going to forgive you because I'm 52, so I'm just going to forgive you for that because I was waiting for that. I'm so old and it's like 43.
And I'm like, okay, you're a good role model then. I would never have guessed that.
My son just entered Cal Poly Pomona, and he's an engineering, electrical engineering major, and he does a shake every day with coconut oil. And he literally. He runs out of coconut oil.
He's like, mom.
You know, he notices that much for his brain for going to class. So honestly, any age, even if you're an old dude at 43 or a seriously old gal at 52, or, you know, my son at 19, coconut oil is incredible. Okay, so we got fructose and coconut. What? Any other good belly fat hacks?
Actually, absolutely. On Green Med Info, we have a whole section on abdominal obesity or midsection fat, and there's about 40 substances listed that have been studied for this property. Now, one thing for women specifically is that as we get towards the end of the ovarian reserve basically being tapped out, say, mid-40s, certain substances can help to address the hormonal component that can lead to midsection fat as well as depression and other associated issues like bone mineral density problems. Pomegranate is actually probably the most powerful thing that I've found so far. It has the ability to support the ovaries by providing actual steroid hormones, including estrogen as well as testosterone. So it's one of those things that you might not think could help with something like hormone insufficiency and midsection fat. But technically, I think it is one of the best things for it because it also is able to reverse arterial plaque buildup, which is one of the only things ever clinically studied to do so just within a matter of a few months of consuming concentrated pomegranate. An Israeli study found up to a 30% regression of the plaque build up in the carotid artery of the study subjects.
You are seriously a walking, talking encyclopedia. You're like, it's like a verbal Wikipedia going on here. It is awesome, amazing. And I love that because one of the things that I always say is your body's not a bank account, it's a chemistry lab. And it's really getting the hormones to fire correctly to tell your body to burn fat, not store it. So how much would you dose of? Like, how is someone doing this pomegranate? Are they eating, finding a fresh one? Are they eating some seeds, are they doing some juice? What are they doing to get that dose in every day?
Great question. The actual seeds, of course, you can get them frozen, you know, organic, and you can throw them into smoothie. They are a little bit, you know, kind of like fibrous, but you sometimes won't notice it in a good blender. The concentrate of the pomegranate is better because it's fructose reduced. So that's another way to do it. A tablespoon a day is usually equivalent to about a whole pomegranate's worth of active compounds. So you can get it through various methods. But the beauty of it is if you start incorporating it, not like neurotically, like I have to take this every day, this amount, like it's a drug, but just start incorporating it into your diet and enjoying it. That secondary component of experiencing your food fully and enjoying it is actually it's self therapeutic. So there's many ways of looking at it.
Wow. All right, that's three. What else you got? Okay.
Interestingly enough, there is research on chocolate having significant.
Yay. Yay. Okay, now I forgive you for the 4,000, 352. Thank you.
I think it's important people who love chocolate, I can't say guilty. I'm happy that I love chocolate. It has this real satisfying effect on appetite. And that's one of the ways that it probably does help with reducing obviously consumption of food in general. But it does seem, because of the polyphenols, which are extremely powerful antioxidants as well as longevity promoting. Because compounds in chocolate like polyphenols are actually information containing molecules and they activate genetic pathways in our body that support longevity, not unlike what happens with caloric restriction. So technically, chocolate has been found to contain some of these same compounds that are also found in green tea, like catechin, curcumin and turmeric. All of these have actually been studied for reducing midsection fat.
So a Dark chocolate, first of all, what percentage and how many bars of it do we need to eat a day?
If I say one bar, everyone's going to love me. But let's just say dark chocolate. Of course, exclude the dairy whenever possible. Although it is delicious, that means 60%, I would say cocoa or higher. Now, raw chocolate is very well known to have much higher levels of these active polyphenols. And so if you can do raw, great. I personally have tried a lot of raw chocolate and it's so potent that I kind of don't like the effect so much. I technically had some today, too, which is Lily's brand because it's stevia sweetened and it has erythritol, which, as you know, you've included excellent alternative to hydrogenated, you know, sugar alcohols, as well as the synthetic ones like Splenda. So it's a good choice. So, yes, there are great forms out there. Try to go with organic fair trade, of course, and then without dairy, and then sugar reduced. And it's perfect.
There is actually one in Canada that I go. When I. When I go to Canada, I grab this one because it's 100% with, you know, no sugar. It's 100%, but it doesn't taste bitter. It's amazing. It's called. I think it's called soba. It's arcana or something. Anyway, it's this amazing Canadian dark chocolate that literally 100% crazy. And I've literally, I've been over time. I started out at 60% and got down 72, then got to 85, then got to 90. Now I do 99. You just creep it up and you get used to it. Yeah.
Oh, if I could just add. Lastly is, they did some research on the cardioprotective properties of chocolate, and they looked at even just mainstream consumption. People were eating Hershey's bars. They found that just a few ounces a day were superior to any of the outcomes found for statin drugs. So technically, billions of dollars are spent on this. Yeah, I know.
Well, you can't patent Hershey's bar. I don't think so. There you go. Wow. Isn't that crazy? I mean, of course, then we can get into the whole thing of, really, should you be lowering ldl? And are they even looking at the right thing? So there's that.
Exactly. It's not actually. You're right. LDL in and of itself is not so important. It's whether it oxidizes, and that's dependent entirely on all the other things. In your diet. So you get very high, very low ldl. It doesn't really matter because qualitatively it's whether it's susceptible to oxidation.
So, so, so far you've just told us one thing that we need to take down, but you've given us all these things. Green tea, curcumin, dark chocolate, pomegranate, coconut oil to add in, which is so fantastic because I love adding before I take away. Is there anything else, like a glaring, I mean, fructose. To me just, you know, I get insane over fructose. Just insane. It's why I wrote the Sugar Impact diet, because like, we've, we like create this whole model that makes fructose and agave come out like they're great foods, you know, I know, it's just every time I go to speak at a consumer conference, I'm amazed because people still are shocked when you tell them agave is bad.
Yes. Isn't that amazing? It is 90% fructose by its constant. It's comprised of 90% fructose. And obviously fructose doesn't actually feed the cell, that's actually glucose. So you don't really get the satiety that you would with glucose. And I've indexed on my site alone about 120 diseases that have linked to isolated fructose. I did this for Joe Mercola, who's a good friend and colleague, and it was remarkable because people were saying, oh, you know, you're crazy. Fructose isn't harmful. Well, the actual research shows that it's extremely harmful. So other than fructose, MSG technically is one of the things that can induce midsection fat and then bisphenol A or bpa, which as you know, is rather prevalent. So whenever possible, use glass instead of plastic for your water and your cooking.
So let's talk. Let's. You just scooted right over the little MSG thing. So what's the mechanism there, msg? Where are the places that people could get in the most trouble that it's just sneaking in? You don't think about it. And why does it help make belly fat?
Yes, well, it's remarkable because it's actually known to be obesogenic and can induce metabolic syndrome, which includes insulin resistance, midsection adiposity, as well as hypertension. So. And where does it sneak in? It's almost everywhere when you go out to eat in places maybe excluding, you know, sort of LA and New York, you know, where they're actually very sensitive to the issue. But if you Go to a restaurant, anywhere else, you really have to ask. And then oftentimes they're not being told the truth. If it tastes like, you know, you could spray MSG on roadkill, and if someone couldn't keep themselves from eating it, it's that powerful a drug. So it technically shouldn't be considered a food additive in my opinion. It's really just a highly toxic drug like compound that is unfortunately, in a huge amount of consumer foods. And some of the obvious synonyms are things like yeast extract. And there's all these different ways of talking about it, but I would really go out of my way to exclude it whenever possible.
And do you have on greenmedinfo.com like a. Where how MSG hides, what it's named, all of that?
Yes. Yeah, we have an article written on the topic. Absolutely.
Awesome. Because this is one that I think is not talked about enough that really it was hard. When I was writing the Virgin Diet, I wanted to put MSG in as like this separate, you know, thing. And I was like, you know what? You just. At some point, all of a sudden, the Virgin Diet would have been like a thousand pages of. And people would have just laid down in the corner and sucked their thumb and said, I can't do it. So I just figured, you know, if we're getting rid of a lot of these processed foods and we're getting rid of gluten and corn, and so I will actually get rid of it. Sort of like, let's just get out of processed food so I don't have to address this.
Okay.
And then. And you know, I used to go around the country and teach this course to doctors called Overcoming Weight Loss Resistance. And it was all these things that could get in the way of you losing weight or cause you to gain weight. And of course, toxins and toxicity was huge. So let's talk a little bit about specifically.
Thank you.
How toxins contribute to belly fat and which ones are the big culprits and what you should do. Because I think the glass bottle thing, people just don't pay enough attention to it. Especially they get the water bottles in the summer, and then they're in their car and then they heat up and then they. Or they do worse. They throw them in the freezer, you know, to keep them cold. And I'm like, oh, you know, no.
This is such a great, intelligent point you're bringing up is that, you know, a lot of times people are being shamed because they're overweight or obese. And, you know, it's really poisoning that is occurring on a metabolic level. There are a lot of explanations for why this happens, jj, but one of them is that our is lipophilic. I mean, well, actually takes in fat soluble toxicants, many of which are pesticides and endocrine disrupting petrochemicals. So the body in a way to protect cells that are dividing rapidly, which would be susceptible to the carcinogenicity of these compounds, instead kind of cordure them off in the fat tissue. So in many ways being overweight or having excess fat could be looked at a symptom of self protection and even healing in the body versus what's actually happen, which is we're all being poisoned dramatically. So excluding anything that has, you know, if you're applying it as a cosmetic, for example, it's worse than eating it. You know, put something in your mouth that has to go to the liver before it gets into the blood and the fat. If you put it right on your skin, it can go right in that tissue. So that's a big part of it. And then of course, what you're saying is eliminate whatever possible exposure through, you know, things like microwaving. I don't microwave at all, but those who do, plastic containers, a lot of that transfers directly into the food. And then even BPA free products. Now, unfortunately, there's an Alphabet soup of bisphenols, all of which are as toxic as bisphenol A, if not more like bisphenol S. So that's really become sort of a marketing ploy by corporations. Is, oh, BPA free, It's safe. Well, technically it's not. It's still plastic and they still have these compounds in them. So we kind of have to move more stainless steel, porcelain, glass. That's really the ideal back back to.
100 plus years ago. Isn't it funny how we will distract as someone brought in a product to me because they said, is this okay? It says no artificial sweeteners, but it had all these artificial chemicals in it. It was like they're just distracting you. Or I think this one was no artificial colorings. And they'd used artificial sweeteners. So, you know, you can do a distraction technique as a manufacturer and people go, oh right. Or all natural. I'm like, all natural means nothing.
I know.
Oh my gosh.
Run the other way. When you hear that.
You are. I've now dubbed you, you are the human Wikipedia. That's it. That's your new name, Human Wikipedia. You are incredible. Like I could just go on with you. Forever. I love these simple tips that you've given people. And especially what's so awesome is just, just, you know, if you're listening, just here are a couple things that you could add that taste delicious anyway that can help you start to have enormous shifts in not just your belly fat, but just your overall health. Of course, because now we know that the major predictor for you of your overall health, especially as a woman, you know, we all as women worry about breast cancer and it's heart disease. That's the big, the big killer that we never seem to talk about. It's so crazy. Like all this stuff with little pink ribbons. I'm like, guys, you really like, you really need to worry about your hearts.
Amen.
I love what you're bringing up.
You're just awesome. And I just want to share with.

It's scary, but true. Sugar is hiding everywhere in diet foods, packaged foods, dressings, and even sugar substitutes. It's not about cutting out all sugar. It's knowing which sugars to choose and which to lose. What if you could drop seven hidden sugars, lose up to ten pounds in just two weeks? JJ Virgin will show you how With a simple four step plan to cut cravings and rev up your metabolism to lose fat fast and forever. Visit jjvirgin.com books and order the Sugar impact diet. You can shed up to ten pounds in two weeks. Visit jjvirgin.combooks all right, welcome back.
So today's question comes from Barb.
Hi jj. My name's Barb Sullivan. I am an avid fan of yours. I did your virgin diet about a year and a half ago and it changed my world. I slept better, felt better. The muscles that I worked so hard to cultivate showed. The bloating was gone, the brain fog was gone. Sadly, little by little, I managed to keep the weight off. But little by little, I let sugar back into my diet. I had started snacking when my boys were home from college. Seemed we were on the go a lot. And while I haven't gained much of the weight back, I feel like I have lost the good habits. The fogginess is creeping back in. And sleeping, not sleeping great. My joints, main thing is my joints, my feet, my shoulder, my hips. Joints just feel achy again. And all that was so much better when I was following your guidelines. I just need a shot in the arm. I need a pep talk and not sound like a commercial. But I know if I get back on track, you really changed my life and I really want to get back there.
Thanks.
So Barb, I love this question because it is probably the single most important thing going on. When you think about it, going through the virgin diet or the sugar impact diet is really about going through your own personal discovery process so that you can uncover your hidden food intolerances, you can break through your sugar addiction, you can customize a diet. Once you've done that reset, that will work for you for the long haul. That means then that you need to stay on track. And what I advise people to do is whichever way program you start with, once you've gotten through that and gotten solid, then do the other one. So if you started with the virgin diet, next up, I'd say go into the sugar impact diet. Then once you've done that because they each refine and build on the other. Okay, once a year, do something annually. And what's so critical about this is that it can be so easy to lose ground, to have things sneak back in. So here's some things that can help you stay the course and get back on track. Because one of the things I see with people is weight regains a major issue. Here's the biggest way that you don't regain the weight, you step on the scale daily. Yes, daily. And I never used to say that advice. I used to say that you do it once a week. But you know, the studies show that people who weigh themselves every single day are much better at maintaining their weight. And it's obvious when you think about it. So first thing I want you to do is commit back to weighing in daily and commit back to journaling daily. That is one of the biggest success strategies when you are on a program and you are right now getting back into the program and it's so important to have a good community supporting you. So jump onto my Facebook fan page, JJ Virgin fan club and find also an accountability partner to do this with you. And again, whether you're starting in the Sugar Impact diet or the Virgin diet, and both of them, by the way, have online programs that can allow you to dive deep into it, which is awesome too great to do that with a partner. Get the program, go deep into it and then you guys just touch base daily. Share your journal pages, share your weigh ins and celebrate your success. But it is so key to both make sure that you're weighing in every day, make sure you're journaling, make sure you're doing the program, reevaluate the program at least once a year. Ideally, in my perfect world, you'd start with one program and once you got through that one little breathing space, the same month go into the other program and then every six months alternate it. It just keeps you refined because you know health is not, you're not done, you're never done. It's a journey and we're always getting better. I always have something that I'm working on in my health. Right now. I have committed to doing yoga and I have a partner going with me to do it because I will fight that. I'll blow it off. I know it. So I go with my boyfriend, I go do yoga because he's the same way. So there you go. So again, this is such a common one and it can be so easily solved. You're going to weigh in daily, you're going to use that journal, you're going to get a community around you. Especially find fitter friends, right? Find people who are where you want to be and get that accountability partner. Now if you'd like to submit a question for me, here's what you do. You just go to jjvirgin.com ask and you can leave a voicemail for me. And I, I love hearing from you. And one more way, I'd love to hear from you. I would hugely appreciate it if you could jump on Stitcher or itunes and leave a review for me. It helps a bunch and be sure to subscribe and share the show with your friends. This is JJ Virgin signing off and reminding you that you are worthy. Dare to live a life that matters.

This is Anne Bogle, author, blogger and creator of the podcast what Should I Read next? Since 2016, I've been helping readers bring more joy and delight into their reading lives. Every week I tag all things books and reading with a guest and guide them in discovering their next reading. They share three books they love, one book they don't, and what they've been reading lately, and I recommend three titles they may enjoy reading next. Guests have said our conversations are like therapy, troubleshooting issues that have plagued their reading lives for years and possibly the rest of their lives as well. And of course, recommending books that meet the moment. Whether they are looking for deep introspection to spur or encourage a life change, or a frothy page turner to help them escape the stresses of work, school, everything. You'll learn something about yourself as a reader and you'll definitely walk away confident to choose your next read, with a whole list of new books and authors to try.
