Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family sheets or skin.
And.
And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating, and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order. Hey, JJ here. And I have the perfect gal on my podcast today. I've met her a couple years ago. I'm buddies with her now husband. She's newlywed like me and fell in love with her the minute I met her. Which you will fall in love with her as well. Her name is Sarah Ann Stewart and she has been into the health realm for over a decade now because when she was younger her dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she and actually her whole family, her dad made a decision to, to not go the traditional route to fight it back with nutrition and alternative medicine. And seven months later he was cancer free and that completely changed her her path and she became super involved with nutrition and I'll let you to her tell the rest of the story. I could go on and on but right. What you need to know now is Sarah Anne is a certified holistic health practitioner. She runs a leading private coaching practice with Fox Focus on permanent weight loss and she has a very different approach to do this without crash dieting. She's the founder of Holistically Slim Movement and the author of the E course Meditate Slim and where I've met her. Gosh, trying to think where I met her first but I've now seen her all over the world. She travels all over the place leading transformative wellness experiences and she just has a very, very cool background that's resulted in her having making some major breakthroughs in health. So I am super excited to be sharing her with you today. She also has a really cool gift she's going to be giving and you'll find out about that during the interview. And also you can grab the cheat sheet. We do awesome cheat sheets. You always make sure you get this, get all the notes, and you can get that@jjvirgin.com forward slash slim. Alrighty. Sarah Ann, welcome to the show. I'm so glad you're here with me today.
Thank you so much for having me. It's such an honor to be here.
Well, I had to have you on especially, you know, we've gotten to spend a bunch of time together, which I've loved. And I especially loved hearing your story and how you got into all of this. That's what to me is always the most fascinating. So I'd love to jump in there and have you. Have you tell what got got you into health and into weight loss. How'd that happen?
Yeah, I'd love to.
Love to share my story. So to backtrack a little bit. I grew up in a really holistic environment. I was gardening as a kid. I was e organic food and juicing. So much so that when my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, which was extremely heartbreaking at the time, we decided to not use western medicine, and we decided to turn to food and the healing power of a food. And within seven months of just changing his diet to vegan and really using alternative methods, the cancer was completely gone. And I became really obsessed with why people don't know about this. Like, why aren't people talking about this? And I really wanted to learn more about the power of nutrition. However, at the same time, I was scouted to model. And so for 10 years, I worked in the fashion industry, suffered from serious eating disorders to the point where there came a day where I was in the hospital and the doctor said, you can't continue like, you're going to die if you don't change careers. So I decided to just leave everything and start studying nutrition again. But the challenge was that all the nutrition information that I was learning wasn't solving my own problems. I was still yo yo dieting. I was gaining weight. I got up to £180. I couldn't get it off. And I was having so much anxiety, like, looking in the mirror, coaching other people about food, and then having this disconnect with myself, like, why am I suffering? And so I ended up hiring a meditation teacher who helped me. And the first thing he said to me, he was like, we're going to help you unlearn the way that you were taught to suffer. And I remember that forever now. And I'm like, I was so scared because I'm like, oh, my gosh, now I have to confront my emotions and my insecurities and my beliefs, and this is getting real. But within a few years, everything. My eating disorders were gone. I had lost all the excess weight. I was down to 135 pounds. I've been able to maintain it. And then I started applying these practices to my own coaching, and the results have just been phenomenal. And what I found is that the number one thing that has helped people break their subconscious patterns and the patterns that have them eat pizza over a salad or make the wrong decisions is really meditation and mindfulness. And so it's been a really powerful, wonderful journey. And it's just exciting that I went through that and now have been able to help other people.
Our mutual pal, Emily Fletcher. He was on me for, like a year. I was the resistant meditator. But it is so interesting how much mindset, mindfulness and meditation. I mean, these things are key if you're. If you are not mindful like, you watch people. I'll never forget this. Sarah and I was coaching a client, and she could not figure out why she couldn't lose weight. And I was over at her house cooking dinner. And this is very simplistic, but it just shows how important just being mindful can be because she would sit down, sit there, and write out her journals. And I'd look at them and go, gosh, this doesn't add up. And then I'd watch her, and she had no idea how much food she was putting into her mouth while she was cooking. She was just completely not present. So, you know, just some of the most basic things of just being able to be present. So I know you talk about meditation as weight loss hack. I think most people don't. They think of meditation to help stress or, you know, to be more present, but they probably don't think of it that way. So, like, let's dig in there.
How is it working? Yeah. So most.
How do we get to sit on the. Most people don't think that.
Right. So, like, because it basically goes against everything we were taught, that calories, inverse calories out, the pyramid, the triangle pyramid of, like, certain foods and so forth. And so we really have to. I mean, it's amazing that research is being done that's showing us that meditation is improving, you know, our heart health and decreasing inflammation and chronic pain. But specifically for weight loss, neuroscientists are now finding that meditation and mindfulness is rewiring our brain. So, for example, it's improving our ability to be hopeful instead of lonely. And so so many of us, including myself, eat while we're lonely, right? When we're at, at night, when we're at home. And there's other things. So it like helps promote happiness and happiness is linked to taking better care of ourselves. It decreases anxiety. Anxiety is one of those things that when you have anxiety, a lot of people emot eat. And this is, you know, this has been very well researched. It improves our compassion, our ability to love ourselves, our sleep, our ability to be in the present moment again, being mindful while we're eating, even overcoming the addiction of food. And it's been proven to show that. So it's really cool that we're starting to see the research behind it and that there are all these powerful things that it's doing to really improve our relationship with food, our relationship with body, our body. And then that impacts our decisions and what we decide to do every day to take care of ourselves.
I mean, clearly we need some other tools out there. Like they just released the 2017 stats where now obesity has. We've crossed over from the, the majority of people being overweight to the majority of people being obese. It's like now 40% obesity, 30% overweight. And it is now that people who are normal weight and by the way of the normal weight people, half the normal weight people over fat, they're skinny fat. So we now have it to being abnormal to be of the right body comp. Which is just horrifying when you think of it. I was like listening to some stats and said something like the by the year 2040, everyone would be overweight. But I think if you look at the stats, it's happening faster. So do you see this? Like, because if you look at these statistics, I mean it's, it, I mean what is going on? Because we've got more information than ever. Thanks Internet. Right. I mean it's not a shortage of information. And clearly what's going on?
So what's going on? We're spending, yeah, around $150 billion plus on medical costs for obesity. And I think what's happening is that the programs that are being implemented are diet programs. And the problem is diet causes anxiety, it causes irritability. We've seen that putting someone on a diet for a certain number of days actually causes more stress. No one's teaching lifestyle, lifestyle balance and creating a lifestyle around health and wellness. And so when you're putting someone on a diet that causes more stress, which increases cortisol, which then increases your appetite and it's this vicious cycle over and over again. And I think that meditation and mindfulness is the missing link. And when they do surveys and they survey people, 90% of people surveyed across our country don't understand that their emotional issues are actually impacting weight loss. And I think it's a huge disconnect. And I think even if we are mindful and aware, we have to become more mindful and we have to really recognize, moment to moment, the decisions that we're making and looking within and saying, why am I making this decision? Where is it coming from? What childhood pattern, what conditioning, what media outlet? Like, where are those pieces coming together to really impact my behavior? And not only that our subconscious mind overrides our conscious behavior. I mean, it's 30,000 times more powerful. So until we really take the time to quiet our mind and, and recognize the behavior, it's. It becomes a challenge in terms of behavior, what, what we're deciding to do.
And when, you know, it sounds so obvious, like, you listen to it and you go, oh, okay. So. Because anyone who's ever been under stress, I mean, most people don't get under stress and say, I think what I need to do is have some broccoli ever. Like, like, no one ever said that. Right. So we kind of like already get this intuitively. But is there actual research to show that, like, say, meditation, for example?
Yeah, and I get that there's a lot of people who are skeptics, you know, and there are a lot of people that there, there's a lot of research being done more so now, specifically for weight loss. I mean, Vanderbilt University showed how it decreases childhood obesity. San Francisco University showed how obese women who were mindful and meditated lost much more significant weight. Cornell University is, did some research on how, like, the people who are trim and how they remain trim. And a lot of it was their connection with their bodies and intuitively listening to what they specifically needed. So there's all this research being done, right? But I think, I think really just to give an example, like, I had a client who this kind of the same situation where she had spent, she knew a lot of stuff. She had spent thousands of dollars, had a wall, supplements, she had a sauna in her bedroom, an elliptical in her living room. She was set up for success, but yet was carrying all this extra weight and couldn't lose weight. And so when I spoke with her, I said, we're not going to talk about nutrition for just a couple weeks. You're going to be mindful and meditate and just quiet your mind For a few minutes a day. And at the end of the process, we started to recognize that it was a feeling unworth in the relationship with her father. And there was a series of patterning from her childhood of being told certain things as a kid about food. So that was more important than necessarily having all the resources. And we see this with celebrities too, right? Like that celebrities have access to everything, but yet they still talk about the emotional eating and stress eating and anxiety eating. And until you really go and heal the story and the conditioned beliefs, we're going to keep reaching for the feeling, the feeling that's inside of us. Whether that's low self esteem, unworthiness, stress, anxiousness, whatever, whatever it is, we're going to be replacing it with food because we want to avoid that emotion.
It was a crazy thing when I interviewed, I surveyed my list and I said, if you are not where you want to be with your weight and your health, what is it? And literally, Saran, I'm like thinking they're going to say, oh, it's the sugar or it's the gluten. Right? You know, something like that. And the number one thing across the board, and you could have knocked me over with this one because I'm super left. Like, just put the cookie down. Yeah, just stop it, stop it. It's not. This is not hard. Like, stop it. And the number one thing across the board that these people said was, I don't feel good enough, I don't feel worthy. That was it. It was it. So this woman, when you had her start with that, I mean, did she look at you first and go like, no, honey, just give me a plan?
Yeah, a lot of people do. They're like, no, I just want your plan. And I said, and a lot of times I have have to say, like, my plan is going to be very similar. I mean, the things that we know are good for us are clean food, we know to eat, organic, we know to sleep, we know. These are things, right. That we talk about over and over and over again. Yeah, it's like these are discussions we have every day. And again, you can Google health and get thousands and thousands of articles and do your own research, but you have to be willing to want to do the research and want to view your body as this beautiful experiment and dive into those patterns and really figure it out. Like, and that was her struggle was for so long she was avoiding this pain. And until. And I kind of just said, well, are you willing to make a change? Like, have you gotten to the place and I think people have to get to the place. Like I had to get to where I was suffering so severely that I had to make a change. Otherwise, you know, the only thing left left was mindfulness. Otherwise I would have been left with this anxiety that was like haunting me. It was the only solution. And I think people get to that where they're just, okay, I'm done. Like, this is the last January 1st. I'm going to commit to something. And you know, I think like 8% of people can actually stick to their resolutions if that. And so, so I think people are finally like seeing that the system isn't working.
3%, 3% of dieters. So I mean, clearly it's not. It's like, it's like, you know, you're looking at like every type of resolution. January 1st, let's just look at just diet alone. And I think what you're saying here is, is we've got the strategies. It's not diet alone that's going to do it. It's when you add in the mindfulness and kind of getting back into your why and confronting probably the things that we don't really want to look at. We'd rather. Exactly. So someone like listening to this, they've never meditated before. They have, like, they've got all the, the strategies there. They keep kind of sabotaging themselves. Like, what would you tell them to do first?
Yeah, it is really intim. Because. And I think it's really, I think for most people, most people that I speak to, they don't want to journal, they don't want to meditate. Because then you actually have to confront yourself. Right? You have to conf.
Oh, I will tell you, Sarah Ann, if people won't journal, like literally when I used to work with people, one on one, journaling was non negotiable. Like I would. That was it. I would fire you. You could not do this and not. And I looked at your journal.
That was it. And so that's. That was it. Like that is it. That's like, like if you're not, if you don't have the. I guess the awareness comes from meditation and comes from journaling and comes from mindfulness practices. And that's because you can finally confront what is in front of you. And so let's say you haven't ever meditated. There's a really good app called Stop, Breathe and Think. And it helps you. There's a moving image on it. It helps you just regulate your breath. And so by regulating your breath, you actually have an Increase in energy. And when you have more energy, you're like more excited to go work out and. And so forth. So that's a really easy thing. Like, just starting to regulate your breath is really, really important.
That was stop breathing. Breathe and think we stop breathing. Put this in the show notes too. And I know you've also got a bunch of things that you've put together in your holistically slim empower pack. So tell us what that is because everyone gets that free. I will give you the link. We'll put that@jjvirgin.com but what all have you put together for everybody?
21 days. It's a very simple program to just start shifting your mindset around food. It's really simple. It's like, don't get on the scale. And there's just really simple things. So for one example is, yes, you can continue to do a food journal, but I recommend writing your emotions next to your food and tracking your emotions while you eat. So that way you can begin to look at the patterns of. Of, you know, I'm angry when I'm eating pizza, I'm sad and lonely when I'm eating ice cream. And then you be able to again, be able to track and be able to work on those emotions and move through them and really shift. Because again, when you have to put it on paper, right, you have to recognize it and say, okay, this needs to be healed. And so it basically breaks it down really easy for you. There's affirmations, a guided meditation, and it really helps you just begin to see dieting and mindfulness in a different approach.
This is so cool because I have people journal what they're eating, and then they track their symptoms and then they see, you know, what they're eating and how it makes them feel and what you're doing, which is super cool for people to start putting in there is look at how you feel and what it's making you want to eat.
And then if you can, the next step is to look at the subconscious pattern. So let's say you're binging every single Sunday night. Well, what happened in your childhood on Sunday night? Maybe your parents got in a fight. Maybe your mom was stressed because she had to go back to work and leave with you. Or the nanny, like, start to track that, start to remember that story. I mean, I see so many people who say to me, well, my mom said there were starving kids in Africa and I had to finish everything on my plate. Like, I hear this all the time. Or my mom used to Shove ice cream. Shove ice cream in front of me. Because her and my father were fighting. And that was, you know, was there a way to make us feel better? And so think about what patterns come from your childhood and how they're playing out now in terms of emotion.
I wonder who was that first person who did this? Starving children in Africa. That person, whoever that was.
Yeah, it's problems out. I hear that one all the time. Or you got really good grades, so we're gonna reward you with pizza and candy or like that.
Crazy. I remember we. I was on Dr. Phil for two years, and one of the seasons, we had this big challenge between all these weight loss challengers and the group that won. I walked outside the hotel we all used to stay at. They were all over at Starbucks with these massive frappuccinos because they'd had their way in and they won. Going to a spa. And I'm looking at them, I'm like, I. Like, I went through. I grabbed all the frappuccinos. I threw them away. It was like, I, you know, burn their cars or something. They're like, I can't believe you did this. I'm like, I can't believe you did this. Like, not learned. Like, we don't celebrate with food, but it is so funny how ingrained these things are. Crazy. All right, so I'm gonna switch gears, and the one thing I'm gonna tell you is you can't say meditation. It'd be too obvious. So that's not the answer you can give. Even though you. To say that. What's. What's one. I'm going to say, what's one other thing that you do every day that you feel makes the biggest difference?
Yeah. So I started about a year ago tracking mindful actions that I do to actually improve my health. So let's say I make a decision to. Let's say I got really stressed out and I walked towards the fridge, but then turned around and walked outside and did some walking meditation, and breathing exercises of, like, let go or something to change that emotion in that moment. I would write that down and be grateful for that moment. And then over the year, I've been able to track all these incredible mindfulness practices that I've done in the moment to basically just reinforce that I'm on the right path. And then every day, I also think of one way I could have been more mindful in my approach to being healthy. So, for example, yesterday we were in between appointments, and I was grabbing sweetgreen and jumping in a taxi and at the end of the day I was like, that probably wasn't that mindful. I probably should have made more time. And it helps you just recognize the really little things that take one minute to change but really do make such a big impact on the long, you know, the long term.
Do you know that like all those things that you've written down over a year would be the coolest thing to publish? Like how awesome would that be for people to see? Because they would just go, oh. Because what you just said is especially this is. How do I replace. When, when I was on Freaky Eaters we would, we had people that did really bizarre eating habits. I mean like crazy bizarre stuff. Like they put tartar sauce on everything or maple syrup on everything or all they would eat are french fries. And what we had to do was find replacement activities for them for when they were doing these things. And that's what you just said. I was walking to the fridge and I went and I did this instead. And it's like, gosh, that's what a cool thing. I would take all those.
Amazing idea. Yeah, I definitely will do that. Thank you for that.
Yeah, but everybody wants that. But if you, if you get this first thing, you're holistically slim and power pack. I bet at some point Sarah Ann's gonna make this available. So go to jjvirgin.com slim and she has a 21 day program. And what I love about this Sarah Ann is it can lay over whatever program you're doing. It's basically going to kind of lock it in and amplify it. So it's great. If you're doing virgin diet or Sugar impact diet, lay this sucker on over it. So that will help you really get your why and get more mindful in how you're living, which is going to make you more successful for the long haul.
Exactly.
Love it. I love it. Thank you so much for joining me today.
It's so awesome.
Yay. I appreciate you. So after the break, I'm going to be answering listeners questions, so stay with me.

Welcome back. This is the time where I answer a listener's question. And today's question came from my seven day challenge group. So I have a challenge that I do. You can actually learn more@jjvirgin.com challenge and it's free. It's a seven day stop, drop and swap challenge where I have you pull out the seven high food intolerance foods for just seven days. And magic results. So in our private Facebook group, we had a gal, Sarah, not to be confused with Sarah Ann, who was talking about the fact that every afternoon she has terrible cravings and she always gives in. And as I was listening to the Sarah Ann interview, I'm like, oh my gosh, this is, this would be great for Sarah. And her big question was, so what do I do? So here's an interesting thing. And Sarah Ann and I were talking about our mutual friend Emily Fletcher, who runs Ziva Meditation. So Emily teaches you to meditate twice a day, first thing when you wake up and then in the afternoon. And when you do it in the afternoon, it really gives you kind of that if you're anxious, if things are like the day's getting out of control, it's like that break that gives you back your, your morning brain and kind of gets you back into, you know, it's like, calm down, lower your cortisol. And I think about what Sarah Ann just taught us and Sarah's question in the Facebook group. And I have a couple different approaches and the first thing I would say is check out Ziva Meditation. We'll put it into the show notes. But you could be throwing in that meditation or even doing what Sarah Ann talked about with that app and just breathing during that time, just as a pattern interrupt and to kind of get your cortisol back down. Tapping works well here too. I've talked about my buddy Nick Ortner and, and the tapping solution. But you need something in there that just says, hey, it's like, it's that moonstruck moment of slapping you and going, snap out of it. It's time. Just go, okay, let's get mindful. Let's look at what's going on. Is this anxiety hitting me in the afternoon? So I'm going for these self soothing techniques of the dairy, the gluten and the sugar that all have this opie like effect on the brain pain. That's my suspicion because I look at this and what I would tell you is if every afternoon you have this habit, what is going on? And what other habit can we put in place that will be a beneficial one instead of a detrimental one? And if it is that you've got this going on because you're stressed out, you're anxious, and then what can we do to lower that anxiety, to lower that stress during. During this time? Because it's going to benefit you overall. So again, now you got a bunch of resources, Sarah, to help you go after this so that you can put the cookie down. There you go. All right. The other part, of course, is don't bring the enemy into the house. And if you're at work, like, just there's like, vending machines down the hallway. Don't go down there. Don't go there. Okay. Now, if you'd like to submit a question, if you're in any of my private groups, we always monitor those. We're looking for those great questions. Same with on Facebook and Instagram, so feel free. We. We not only monitor them, we're answering them all the time. And I say we because I have my coaches in there helping me too, but I also look for the ones that just fit so well with whatever podcast I'm doing so that we can throw them on in and share it with everybody. So thank you so much for asking those questions. Super appreciate it. And by the way, the other thing we appreciate a ton are these awesome reviews on itunes. And I can't tell you how much I appreciate when I get to read these reviews. And every week I go over the reviews as I'm getting ready to record a podcast. We look at all of them, the team looks at them, and it's makes all of all of our days so big appreciation for that. And I just want to read out this one by Vaughn Marvelous and Von Marvelous, five stars, says love it as the big subject line. And it says, JJ Virgin is wise, knowledgeable, fun, and has a wonderful podcast. I listen to this podcast all the time, have read her books, drink her delicious shakes, and basically try to soak up everything she says. I think anyone who wants to be healthy and live a great life should learn listened to this podcast. Von Marvelous, thank you so much. I super appreciate that. Wise, knowledgeable, and fun. I'll take it. I'll take that. So thank you so much for that. And again, you can leave a review on itunes too, and we appreciate it. Just head on over there, and when you're there, be sure to subscribe. And if you have other friends who you would love to help be healthier and happier. Hey, share it on over to them. Them too. All right, thank you so much. See you next week.

Guests have said our conversations are like therapy, troubleshooting issues that have plagued their reading lives for years, and possibly the rest of their lives as well. And of course, recommending books that meet the moment. Whether they are looking for deep introspection to spur or encourage a life change or a frothy page turner to help them escape the stresses of work, school, school, everything. You'll learn something about yourself as a reader and you'll definitely walk away confident to choose your next read, with a whole list of new books and authors to try.
