Dr. Stephanie Estima explains how to adjust your training across your menstrual cycle. Week one: light to moderate lifting. Week two, when estrogen and testosterone peak: go heavy with 5-8 reps, but skip HIIT because ligaments are looser. Weeks three and four: dial back the weight and add more reps as progesterone drops.

Questions this episode answers

8–12 repetitions per set (moderate weights).

Approximately 5–8 repetitions per set (heavy lifting; last 3 reps should be very challenging).

Avoid high-intensity interval training (sprints, explosive movements) because high estrogen increases ligament laxity, raising injury risk.

Return to moderate weights: 8–12 repetitions per set.

Lighten the load and increase repetitions — consider 15–20 reps; schedule recovery days as progesterone drops.
