How to Change Your Diet to Relieve Back Pain with Dr. Todd Sinett
15 Dec 2025 · 33 min
Podcast episode in which JJ Virgin interviews Dr. Todd Sinett about links between diet, inflammation, and back (and related) pain. Dr. Todd Sinett (author of the "Senett Solution"/Back Pain Relief Diet Book) describes a triad of causes — diet/digestive, structural, and emotional — and explains diagnostic eating approaches (quizzes/diets) to identify and reduce inflammation; many listeners report measurable improvement within about three weeks. The episode includes promotion of a free digestive inflammation quiz (jjvirgin.com/betterback) and discussion of markers such as hs-CRP and nutritional supports (omega-3s, curcumin).

Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. This is going to be a fun show because we are going to talk about the connection between back pain and diet. And I was really excited when I got introduced to Dr. Todd Sinnott because I'd seen this in my own work and I hadn't, I hadn't set up to search for this. I started to notice here from people on the Virgin diet that all of a sudden their arthritis was getting better. And then same thing started to happen with the sugar impact diet. And I just saw all of this as a really good side benefit that we were reducing inflammation. So reducing inflammation everywhere. Well, today's guest is going to dive into that and really show you how this should be changing your diet and exactly which type of diet should you go on based on his assessment to improve your back pain, which is super cool. I've never seen someone tie it all together before. So let me tell you a little bit about our guest today. Dr. Todd Sennett is a pain expert and chiropractor and he has written about the Senate solution, the practice of listening to the whole body and treating all sources of back pain on the structural, digestive and emotional levels. What he calls the triad of health. And he's got three weeks to a better back. He is a recognized authority in applied kinesiology and has been a clinical expert for a lot of different media including the View, Fox MD and Good Day New York. That's what we're going to be digging into today is how there are three things he's identified that can cause back pain. And starting with diet. And how do you know which diet is going to be the best for you? How do you know if diet is an issue for you? He's got a great giveaway for you where you can take this assessment to identify if diet could be one of the things that's impacting your back pain. And you'll be able to get that@jjvirgin.com betterback so this is kind of one of those things I look at and I go, why wouldn't this be the first thing we started with, Right? I mean, this should be the first thing we start with.
All right.
And speaking of the first things we start with, one of the first things I start with during each show is a shout out. Shout, shout, shout out. I'm shocked out to moms max67, who says the best exclamation point, point, point. Five stars. Incredibly informative. I am so thrilled I discovered JJ. Life changing habits for now. Thanks. Alrighty. Dr. Todd Sennett, welcome to the show. Super excited to have you here.
Well, I am super excited to be on your show, so thank you so much, jj.
Well, I love anything that has to do with food and how you can use food to get out of pain. One of the cool things that happened that I didn't, it was kind of a side effect. And I think when you're doing healthy stuff, you get side benefits. Not side effects, actually. But one of the side effects of the Virgin diet is people started their arthritis was going away. You know, I was like, what? You know, I was just using this for weight loss. So be interesting to dig in here with what we're talking about and I'm sure you're going to connect some of these dots. So before we dive in to this whole idea of using diagnostic eating to relieve chronic pain, back and neck pain, before we go there, I want to know how you got here. Not on my show. I know how you got here, but how did you get into all of this stuff?
Well, I got a really great story. Or actually I should say my father had a really great story. So back in 1975, my father was a practicing chiropractor for about 15 years until one day he bent down to pick up a tennis ball and then his back went out.
That's not supposed to happen to chiropractors.
Exactly. So that's why it makes the story interesting that he is a chiropractor. And he was suffering from back pain. So he took a couple days off from work, and a couple days turned into a couple weeks, and a couple weeks turned into nine months. My father was completely bedridden with the most severe back pain you'll ever want to see. Wow. He was just stuck in bed. And I was 5 years old at the time, and I remember very clearly that my father was stuck in bed for nine months. So for nine months, my father did nothing but try and seek out a solution to his back pain. So he went to see chiropractors, physical therapists, orthopedists, and no one could help him. He even went to an orthopedic surgeon who basically suggested they cut him open to see what would happen.
Oh, my gosh.
Never a good term. So he went to a doctor who was asking very different questions. He was asking my father, well, why you have the back pain? What's going on? What's creating these spasms, rather than everyone trying to get rid of the spasms. So he was looking at the pain as the message and not the problem. So the doctor with a fortuitous name of Dr. Goodhart, surmised that my father's diet, which was filled with sugar, which was upsetting his stomach, which was upsetting his digestive system, was then reflexing and throwing his back muscles into spasms. And I will tell you that my father found that completely nutty. As a character.
I was just gonna ask you, like, did your dad go, yes. Yeah, right.
75. So my father was down to two options. Exploratory surgery or change your diet. So he completely changed his diet. He got rid of all his sugar, and within about 10 days, he was 100% cured. And this was in 1975. So, wow. That completely changed my father's life. It completely changed my family's life, and then it changed my father's approach to health. Very much so. So he went on to become a very renowned chiropractor and doctor because of this very interesting approach, and we call it the Senate solution. Whereas back pain can come from diet, which is the most overlooked cause of back pain. It can come from structural problems, which is where we're spending all of our time, energy, and effort, and also emotions and stress. So if you're not addressing those three areas for back pain, you're misdiagnosing it, mistreating it, because you're not getting all three aspects of the causes of back pain.
And I think for most people, they think when they think of back pain, they think of structural issues, right?
Yes. And I will tell you that that thought process is why we have the epidemic of back pain. Because again, we're only looking at a third of the possible solutions and a third of the possible treatments. So you have these people having back surgery when their back pain is caused by their diet, so it has no.
Shock, which is crazy. I mean, let's talk as back surgery. You know, you go and let's say that you do a fusion that's just, that's not a one time you're fixed. Now you've got destabilized vertebrae, destabilized discs up above and below that. Now you probably have another surgery. And I mean, it's, it just is a setup for long term disability. It's so crazy that this is not out there. So why, I mean, first of all, like this should be first line. Why is this not being talked about? What's going on?
So, I mean, these are great questions. These are questions that I'm asking every day. I mean, to, again, to have the ability to write a book called the Back Pain Relief Diet Book, and to be able to change people's back pains and quality of life by just changing what they're eating and drinking is one of the most rewarding things. It's the simplest thing to change. And you get your answers in three weeks by changing your diet in three weeks, you know, whether you're back pain.
Yep. So I'm right there with you because that's exactly what I saw in both virgin diet and sugar impact diet. And again, I was doing the first one for weight loss because I was using it for other reasons and saw weight loss as a side benefit. And then they started to talk about the inflammation, like, huh. So, yeah, it's crazy. I mean, why wouldn't you try that first before you ever do anything else?
You want to do the least invasive thing first and then keep going to the more invasive. That doesn't mean that a surgeon could be the greatest thing for your back pain, but you have to try the least invasive thing. And the least invasive thing is change what you're putting in your mouth and change what you're drinking. You know, change what you're eating and drinking and see what the response is.
All right, well, let's talk about what you do to change what people are eating and drinking. I want to see how. And I have no idea, like I'm walking into this and you might say, I have people have gluten, dairy and wash it down with juice. And then I'll be like, oh, my.
Gosh well, the first thing I always want to do with a person is we want to get to the main cause. So in my book and part of a freemium is the digestive inflammation test. So we want.
Yes. And this is super cool, by the way, Everybody listening. You are going to get this digestive inflammation quiz. And I think what we'll do as a little link to grab this thing is we will do jjvirgin.com better back. So better back and then go ahead and keep going.
So what we want to do is we want to see if your back pain is coming from your diet. Right. For some it may not be. For some it could be just structural. For some it could be emotional. But the vast majority of people is combination of factors, right?
Well, and also, Todd, I mean, I can't believe that if someone's diet's not great and you dial in a great diet, there's not going to be at least some impact. There's always going to be something. Right?
Agree. So we want to see if we think your back pain is coming from your diet or your digestive system. So in this quiz, we're going to basically see how your bowel movements are, if you're constipated, if you're taking a lot of medication, if you have diarrhea, if you have a lot of bloating, if you're drinking a lot of carbonated beverages. We're going to go through a questionnaire to see if we think your back pain is diet related. And if it is, then we're going to go to our next quiz and we're going to see what diet is really best for you. So in the book, we have a couple different diets. So we have one that's basically low on sugar and caffeines and alcohols to cut down on the straight up cortisol levels or inflammatory factors in your back. We have another diet that's very specific for people who have almost irritable bowel syndrome. So it's called the fodmaps diet. And that is specific for these types of individuals where you're pulling specific foods that may be healthy but are creating inflammation for that particular individual. And then the third diet also is there's something called the digestive rest diet. And that's for people who are having a lot of repetitive foods or too much roughage or too much of something that is inherently good, but too much of that, it could be creating the problem. So once we know that your diet is creating the problem, we have a couple different diets to go through to try and then again within.
And how do you know which diet to try?
It's all based off the diagnostic nutrition test. So we're going to ask you questions of how many cups of coffee in a week are you drinking? How many sodas are you drinking? Are you, you know, what are you. We're going to try and figure out what you're sensitive to and what you're not sensitive to.
Got it? All right, then what? So they do that, and then they.
Then we do these diets, right? Three weeks later, guess what happens? The vast majority of people is they're feeling a lot better, right? So you know that diet and inflammation are very much correlated. So I always think that back pain is really more of an inflammatory problem than anything else. So the inflammation could be coming from structural inflammation, such as poor posture, poor rest. It could be coming from emotional inflammation, from stress and tension. So we want to lower the inflammatory factor. And it's funny because when I tell people that their back pain is being caused by the diet, they always give me a look of bewilderment. So I always try and give them some reasoning so it makes some sense. So I'll say, do you believe you are what you eat? And they'll say, yes. And I'll say, you know, if you went to a medical doctor and you had severe back pain, what do you think they're going to prescribe to you? And they'll be like, I don't know, anti inflammatories. I'm like, agreed. So if we can give you a diet that's inherently anti inflammatory in nature, don't you think a change in your diet can help your back pain? And they're like, yes. So there's all these correlative studies of, you know, in 1995 and even in the Lancet, people who had passed away who were suffering from back pain showed more blocked arteries to the spine. In the Asian Spine Journal, 30% of people who suffer from back pain also suffer from digestive issues or gastrointestinal issues. Olympic athletes, right? When they're training, what's the most important thing? They pay really good and close attention to their diet and their nutrition. So if they believe that the diet, nutrition is pivotal for their strength training to make them stronger, the converse is also true. So if they're not, if people are not eating healthy or right for their bodies, they're becoming weaker and affecting their muscular system. So, you know, once I'm able to kind of go over those things, patients really get it. You know, they Say, oh, that makes some sense. So it really can have some, you know, some really profound impact. It certainly did on my father.
So listen to this. Someone grabs a book, and we'll have the show links in the show links will have the link to the book, too. Again, jjvirgin.com better back, but you'll be able to take this quiz. But you grab the book and identify which diet to start with and go through it. And it strikes me, Todd, that whether or not you need to then keep going to a doctor, this is really should be.
Step one. Yes, step one. You know, the first thing I always say to patients who are suffering from back pain? Chill out, relax. Right? The likelihood of you needing back surgery or that your life is ruined and you're never gonna be able to lift the grandkids again without pain is extremely low. So essentially, there's two types of back pain. There's the back pain that comes from trauma, right? You slipped and fall on the ice. You were in a motor vehicle accident. You fall off a bicycle. That's a trauma. That's a random event. And you really may need to seek professional help immediately to make sure you didn't break something or damage something. But the second aspect of back pain, which is really way more common, is it's accumulation of small imbalances. And these actions or these imbalances were not the true cause. You know, the actions of bending down to pick up something or tying your shoes or getting out of the car, these actions were not the cause of your back pain, but just the reflection or the effects or the showing of the back pain. So these things have been building little by little by little. And again, it could be just, you're not eating right, you're drinking too many cups of coffee, you're having too much sugar, you're having bagels, soda, chips, pasta, pizza, wine, alcohol, and dessert. And that's raising the inflammatory factor to the point where you grab a suitcase and overhead bin and your back goes out. That's not a surprise. That's a. That's waiting to happen.
But it is a surprise when people aren't connecting the dots between what they're eating and what it's doing. Right?
I mean, there has not been a book written on the linkage between diet and back pain that I know of until my book, like, it's so foreign for some reason.
So let's take to the next step, because you talked about three things, and I want to know how they all connect, because you talked about, like, to me, I totally get the diet One and I. And I'm betting a lot of people listening to the podcast are like, yes. You know, they just never probably thought, oh, I have back pain. This should be my starting point, which is, I think, really our through line in this conversation. The next step is, though, when you talked, you said, okay, it's diet, it's emotion, it's structure. Do they connect? I mean, what's, how do those all go together?
Ah, yeah, they're completely connecting. Okay, so what, what are we really seeing? We're seeing the person who's stressed out hunched over their desk all day, maybe not exercising, not eating the right foods. They're going to have back pain. And it's all interlinked. So depending on our emotional outlook. So if we're doing physical exercise. Physical exercise produces endorphins, right, which improves your mood and improves your health. Our moods affect our digestive system. So if we're eating a hot fudge sundae when we're celebrating, there's a complete neurochemical digestive process difference than if we're eating that hot fudge sundae when we're depressed. Also, your posture really helps and impacts your digestive system. So if you're slouched over and your breathing is shallow and short, your digestive process isn't functioning optimally. So you need to make sure that you're balanced structurally, emotionally, and dietarily. And that's the solution.
So does this mean sit up straight and be happy and celebrate and have cake?
It's funny because.
I mean, I just have to play it out there because that's, you know, it's like, I know what people are thinking, okay, well then, if I'm gonna have a Sunday, I.
Should only do it.
Yeah. A lot of people have asked me, my, my, if you could name one superfood, right, what would it be? And my answer is birthday cake. And they say, why birthday cake? Well, because ideally you're eating it once a year. Everyone, you get presents, everyone's celebrating, and it's a good reflective time. So everyone's digestive system is a bit different.
And okay, that's the, that is you. You win the prize of the only person. When we've ever asked, you know, what are your top three food? You're the only person, but you're, you're the only person I've ever heard connect it and talk about, you know, how do you feel when you're sitting down to eat? Are you stressed? I mean, just think about. And I'd love you to talk quickly about what happens when you sit down to eat a meal and you're absolutely stressed, yeah.
The digestive process goes haywire. Your muscular system, you know, there's a saying of, oh, don't be so uptight. But that's a physiologic truth. Muscles and organs should contract and relax. And when we're uptight, our muscles and our organs contract, contract, contract and don't relax, resulting in tension, spasm and pain. It's not, it's not a surprise. So we want to make our body less uptight. We want to slow down, we want to slow down our breathing, we want to slow down our actions. We want to get mindful. Another really interesting thing is I always say that the quality of your bowel movements will directly tie to the quality of your back pain. When it comes to our diet, it's not just our input, but it's also the effectiveness of our output. Diarrhea, constipation, bloating are complete factors and triggers for severe back pain. Very often, again, the patients will sit there and say that back pain came from nowhere, but it didn't come from nowhere because their digestive system so irritated. So want to pay attention to how your bowel movements are because that directly correlates to the function of your back.
That is a good one. I've never heard that one before either.
Well, there we go. I'm two for two.
Yes. Birthday cake. And how you poop determines your like is integral to your back pain.
Now, when I say back pain, it could really be just about almost any symptoms. It could be neck pain, shoulder pain, tightness in your mid back, lower back, you know, leg pain, sciatic pain, you know, it just triggers an inflammatory reaction because all the nerves exit the spine. So the amount of symptoms that this can impact is very much profound.
So let's talk through. And again, everyone's going to get this. You're going to get this. @jjvirgin.com, better back. Let's talk through this assessment and what they're going to find by doing it.
We are going to find if your back pain is coming from your diet and your digestive system, we're going to ask you specific questions on the frequency of what foods you're eating. Are you somebody who's just eating tons of roughage, tons of salads, Is it creating a lot of gas? Do you feel bloated? Are your bowel movements easy? Are your bowel movements difficult? Are your bowel movements loose? Are you having a lot of chips and sodas and glass of wine and simple carbohydrates and simple sugars. Are you tending to be sensitive to specific foods? Do you seem to be creating a gluten sensitivity? Are you repeating foods all over and over again? We gotta kind of pull it out, pull it out to find out what we think is the best diet to try. And again, you have nothing to lose. You'll probably lose some weight on these diets. You'll have some more energy and hopefully you'll get rid of your back pain.
And are there a couple things. Last one, a couple foods that you've seen that probably are the worst things that you can do in terms of. Is it very specific to the person or are there a couple ones you could pull out and go. These tend to be ones that I see that are problematic for the majority of people.
It is a little bit. The answer is a little bit of both. So a lot of the simple carbohydrates are simple sugars. So the caffeine, coffee, alcohol, sugars are very, very common. But then I'm also seeing some patterns of people having too many. Too much roughage. So a lot of big salads, green drinks, some protein bars can do it as well. Anything that can create digestive upset or inflammation can trigger the back pain. So those are kind of my. Those are kind of the most common.
Excellent. Very cool, very cool information. Love that you've tied this all together. And I'm super appreciative that you are gifting everyone that assessment. So if you've been struggling with your back, it just seems to be not getting better. I hear that from a lot. I'm a. I'm a big pro chiropractor. It's. I have an amazing one here in San Diego, where I live, shout out to Dr. Chad Larson. Another amazing one in Palm Springs, where I also live, shout out to Dr. Karina Morrison. And just on the hunt for one in Tampa, where I'm in the process of moving to. It's like one of the first things that I go and can find as a. Find a chiropractor and a naturopathic doc. But I super appreciate that you're putting this all together. And. And I see with a lot of people, they're trying one thing and going, it's not getting better. It's like, well, because we have to put it all together and if you're eating inflammatory foods, you're going to have pain. And I mean, that's just the bottom line. Like. And again, I saw that so clearly with the response to the books. People who I Had one guy, this is a crazy story, who was going to go have his knee replaced and he had stopped working. He was a professor at a university. He was in his 70s and he was going to have his knee replaced. And after going on the diet and pulling out gluten and sugar and dairy, boom, no more pain, no more knee replacement. So these things happen all the time. And this is one of those kinds of things that you owe it to yourself as doing this as your first line of therapy and seeing how far this takes you and then see what else you need to do. But this is like, this should be step one in everything. So I love that you've made this resource available to everybody. Thank you so much. I super appreciate you, Todd.
I super appreciate you and your listeners for giving me the time to share this information. So I really do appreciate it.
All right, thank you. Grab this one off my latest Instagram Live. Like, this is kind of a pretty interesting question, and it is how do I know if I have inflammation? And almost I had to think about that. I'm like, how do you know if you have inflammation? I mean, you kind of know because you hurt and. But there are lab tests for it. The most obvious lab test to look at general inflammation is something called a highly sensitive C reactive protein. But here's the thing. I look at this and I think back to the virgin diet. When I started the virgin diet, I first was doing food sensitivity testing called 9GG4. And we would have you come in to the doctor's office, run the test, and then I'd wait three weeks, then I'd end up putting you on the same diet that I was going to put you on anyway. And then after that, I kind of went, huh, maybe I should just do the test and put them on the diet. And I started getting the same results. And then I thought, maybe I'll just do the diet. And I look at this and go, how do you know if you have inflammation? Well, if you've got any kind of pain, if you've got any kind of insulin resistance, chances are you've got some inflammation. When you look at inflammation, it's kind of at the core of any of the different diseases going on. So best thing to do is to really monitor your symptoms. And that's where I've used all of my programs. And that's why I'm so in line with what Dr. Todd Sennett was saying is let's connect the dots between what you're eating and how you feel. Let's start with really Evaluating, like take a real hard look at where am I? You know, what's going on with my energy, what's going on with my focus and clarity of thought and my mood, what's going on with gas and bloating, what's going on with joint pain, what's going on with appetite. Right, so let's check in there, clean up the diet. Notice we're both in line for this. Needs to be for at least three weeks. Check back in on those symptoms if you've seen a big improvement, A, you've reduced inflammation and B, diet was the thing helping you do it. Now, could you do a highly sensitive C reactive protein at the beginning and then do another one at the end? Yes, you could. But one of the things we do know is that if you've got more body fat, chances are you've got a higher, highly higher HSCRP because body fat is going to release inflammatory cytokines. So that would be, you know, one of the things that you need to make sure you're losing body fat too. Also, antioxidants are super important here too for reducing inflammation. So while I look at diet as really one of the keys here, I'd also look at using omega 3s, especially omega 3s from fish oil and then also some of the different antioxidants and especially some of the anti inflammatories that are strong antioxidants, like curcumin is a great one there. Okay, hope that helps. I will see you all on the next show if you haven't subscribed yet. Oh, make sure you do so you don't miss any goodness. And while you're over there, I'd love it if you left a review and I will do a shout out for you. So put your name in there too. Okay, See ya.

Hello listeners, this is Anne Bogle, author, blogger and creator of the podcast what Should I Read next? Since 2016, I've been helping readers bring more joy and delight into their reading lives. Every week, I take all things books and reading with a guest and guide them in discovering their next read. They share three books they love, one book they don't, and what they've been reading lately. And I recommend three titles they may enjoy reading next. Guests have said our conversations are like therapy, troubleshooting issues that have plagued their reading lives for years, and possibly the rest of their lives as well. And, of course, recommending books that meet the moment. Whether they are looking for deep introspection to spur or encourage a life change or a frothy page turner to help them escape the stresses of work, school, everything, you'll learn something about yourself as a reader, and you'll definitely walk away confident to choose your next read, with a whole list of new books and authors to try.
