A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything, they just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Hey, it's JJ Virgin and welcome to the JJ Virgin Lifestyle show where I give you the latest cutting edge intel to help you look, feel, feel and think better. Now, today's show is all about EMFs. In fact, the title is Is it menopause or is it emfs? And you could actually put a lot of things after that. Am I tired or is it EMFs? Do I brain fog or is it EMFs? And so this is something that I heard about years ago and to be honest, I, you know, I knew it was an issue and I kind of like put it to the side. And just recently, you'll hear in this podcast, I started doing some major shifts around it and saw what a difference it made and that's why I had to have Nick Pino on the show. He actually just was at our Mindshare summit and he did a five minute talk on EMS that blew people's minds. And so I was like, all right, I need to have you on the podcast, my friend. So let me tell you a little bit about him. He's a health journalist and he's the author of the Non Tinfoil Guide to emfs, an unconventional book which combines common sense and humor to tackle the very serious topic of electromagnetic pollution and its effects on human health. And you can learn more about this@nontinfoil emf.com I also have an amazing checklist you're going to want to grab, and you'll hear more about that as we go@jjvirgin.com EMF so here we go. I'm excited to share Nick Pinault with you. All right, let's do it. Nick Pinault, welcome to the show. I'm so glad you're here with me today.
Hey jj, thanks for having me. It's really an honor.
Well, this is a topic we have never talked about on the show and it may scare the heck out of some people as we talk through it because I know it's getting out there more and more and more and I think you're one of the leading reasons why. So let's dig into EMFs. And for those who don't know what an EMF is, let's just start there. What's an emf? And you know what else I'd love to know, Nick, is like, how the heck did you get into like researching them and, and all of this?
Sure. So just starting with my story, I'm a, I'm a health journalist. I've been researching about health for writing about it. Five years online, but 10 years on my own. And I'm a pretty young guy, but just at a very young age I was very interested in my, my own health and trying to, I don't at the time gain mass. Now it's other priorities now it's more anti aging now that I turned 30, but I've been interest 30.
Oh my gosh, the old dude.
Well, yeah, that didn't sound right, did it? Anyhow, I started looking into EMFs last year and basically. So EMFS stand for electromagnetic fields. These are the invisible fields that are emitted, the signals emitted by your cell phone, Bluetooth, WI fi, everything wireless. And I had heard some people claiming, for example, oh, I heard about one guy having a brain cancer, brain tumor on the side where they talked with their cell ph. This has sparked a lot of controversy in the media, but I kind of not disregarded it. But I was a bit skeptical that there was truth to it, because in my mind, if a device is sold, it probably means that it's safe. Or I had this kind of naive belief about it. But when I dove deeper, reading every book I could get my hands on the topic, I realized that no one in the scientific community, no one agrees on whether they're safe or not. Some people say they're completely safe. And then you get other countries removing WI FI from schools because they've seen studies where it might cause issues in kids, ADHD and developmental issues. And when it comes to even cell phone use, you get a lot of studies showing that maybe it increases our brain cancer risk. So that got me very concerned. And then I ended up spending thousands of hours researching everything and writing a book about it. I wanted to tell my friends, tell my family the truth about these devices and most of all what we should do differently about them, not throw them away. I mean, I have a computer in front of me now. I have my cell Phone that I'm using as a hotspot right now. It's not ideal, but I'm still using technology. I'm not advocating that we go back to the stone age or anything. My message is that we should use these devices in a different way, because right now they haven't been conceived to be right next to your head. That's basically my conclusion after thousands of hours of research.
The big question then, and what I love that I just heard about you from you, is the first time I started to hear about this, you know, kind of was like, okay, we'll go back and live out, you know, in the woods and leave all this alone. And it's like, well, okay, that's not really realistic. And I know you're going to tell us, like, how we can coexist and as healthily as possible, but right now, like, what's. What are the worst things that we're being confronted by?
Well, the number one source, a lot of people talk about exterior source, that we hear about smart meters and cell phone towers being like citizens fighting over cell phone towers being installed and all this. But don't forget that the biggest source is the one that's closest to your body. And it means your own cell phone or tablet or even your laptop computer that you might use on your lap. So my number one advice that I give in is put 1ft of this, 1 foot of distance between you and the device at all times. So it means, of course, you. You cannot put a cell phone next to your head if you want to create distance. So it means, for example, I use Apple earbuds or any kind of headphones wired to talk on my cell phone. And then I simply hold it in my hand. And when you carry it on your body, for example, as a man or even as a woman, we. We have something very sensitive, our reproductive organs. Men put cell phones in their pockets. Study after study show that their sperm count is greatly affected. And I can only think what is happening on a testosterone level, testosterone production, or even women when it comes to their hormonal disruption. That can happen if you carry your cell phone all the time close to your body. So instead of keeping it in your pocket at all times, every time you're carrying it around, you can use a back pocket. But when you're done with your. You're traveling. Maybe now you're sitting in your car, just put it away. Just having this, this reflex, this new habit of putting it away. And what most people don't know is that at. At one, right next to your here, let's say you have one unit of radiation. Well, you have 90% less at two feet. So it drops off very, very quickly. So, yeah, it's exponentially with distance. So it's just something. Even at 2 inches, it would be way better than right next to your ear. It's way less radiation. So create distance is really the number one thing to do how to handle these devices. And when it comes to this laptop, for example, four hours in one study of laptop use has shown a reduction of 25% in sperm count and motility in men. So it's kind of attacking your most vulnerable parts. And it might also do something to your gut because all this radiation is going towards your. Your stomach and your reproductive organs. So what I advise is just don't use a laptop like it sounds. It's not a laptop. It should be just a tabletop. You should use it like a normal computer. Or you could use some sort of shield that a lot of good companies have come up with some products where you can put your laptop on top of them and then it shields your body against these EMFs.
Yeah, they really shouldn't call it a laptop, should they? That is so key. And I just think about all the times that I will shove my cell phone, like between in my Lululemons, which is super not good. You know, if I'm going to the gym, I'm like, ah. So we need a really cool laptop holder or a cell phone holder that is. Can protect you. Because I catch my kids putting it in their pants pocket.
I'm like, don't do that.
It's not ideal. So if you do that and you're just on the move, you could put airplane mode. This is not something I forgot to tell you about, but airplane mode is really. It should not just be used. It should be called, like, everyday mode. You should be on airplane mode by default. And then something I share quite a lot is this idea that instead of having your devices always on and sometimes off, like we do right now, like we close our computer, maybe a computer or our cell phone when we want to have a quiet conversation in a restaurant. This is a kind of technological hygiene that we expect from each other. Now, I think in society. Well, it should be the opposite. It should be always off and sometimes on. So that way we're exposed to way less radiation. And of course, I understand you have kids, J.J. and I'm gonna have a kid soon, actually. I'm gonna be a new dad. So when your kids are away and you want to receive a Call at night. You keep your cell phone open. It's. A lot of people don't have landlines these days. So in that case, just create as much distance as possible. Because your cell phone, even right next to your bed, it's constantly emitting these EMFs and has been shown to reduce melatonin at night. So melatonin is both a sleep hormone, but it's also an immune system booster that you need to combat and prevent cancer. So it is very important. Important. It's very serious, what I'm talking about. And a simple step of putting it on airplane mode instead of right next to your head as you use it as your alarm clock, could mean the difference between you feeling amazing in the morning and having a lot of deep sleep.
Or.
Or none, basically. Some people are very sensitive to these signals, and I'm actually one of them. I realized lately that if I keep my cell phone, if I keep wi fi at night in the same area where I live, I just don't sleep well. And when I close it, I sleep like a baby. So you gotta discover that for yourself.
Yeah, we actually just did that recently. I'm kind of ashamed to admit this because I knew it, but I didn't do it. And we got a new bed, this Samina bed. That's amazing. And part of what he came and talked to us about was, you know, all of the. He was. He was helping us put this in our bedroom. So he saw like, you know, the clock. He saw where my cell phone was plugged in. He's like, okay. So he just made us clear it all out. And I would literally, like, have my laptop thrown down under. In. In the nightstand table. So all of that now is cleared out. We have our phones in the other room. At night when we go to bed, it is. It makes a massive difference. The challenge I have now is in hotel rooms, but I've just taken to putting my cell phone in the bathroom so I can block it. And unplugging all those darn clocks that they have surrounding your bed. Because the hotel rooms seem to me to be one worst culprits now.
Oh, my God. Yes. In a hotel room in Vegas. I have a story. We're in the in area hotel and the 56th floor. We had this fancy room. Everything was super comfy. We were ecstatic about it. And then I looked at my EMF meter. I have a meter that detects these signals and that shows you levels, and they were off the charts. And I was like, what's happening here? It turns out the phone that they put right next to my head at night was emitting the equivalent of about five cell phones. I kid you not. It was just crazy. So you, you cannot sleep in this kind of environment. And it turns out it was plugged into the wall and I couldn't remove it. So I, I tried to create distance and I ended up looking a bit crazy. I think when the, the maid came, came in to, to to wash our stuff because I wrapped it in aluminum foil and because actually aluminum foil, aluminum paper is one way to shield against ems, believe it or not. So it something to it. But so I wrapped this whole thing as if it was a hot potato ready to go to barbecue. And it actually worked. The levels were way, way down. So maybe bring aluminum foil in the travels. I don't know. I do actually now, so.
All right, well, there's a, I mean that's a good, that's a good little hack is airplane mode and then aluminum foil on your travels. Those are a couple of ones that are important because honestly, the sleep one blows my mind. What a big difference it is. You talked about like you started talking about the hormonal issues, but can you go into that a little bit deeper or there's a research on it. Like, you know, one of the things that you talked about was what this can do with PMS and libido. So what, what all you heard there?
Well, I heard, for example, there's a Dr. Elizabeth Plored, and if I remember correctly, this was in California. But she was seeing a lot of pain patients, women in I think early 40s, reporting symptoms of what she thought was early menopause. So low libido, fatigue, insomnia, and everything was all over the place for these women. Just feeling a lot of mood issues, depression, anxiety, and it turns out that their hormones were actually normal. So she wondered what, what the heck was wrong with them. And it turns out that smart meters were in, installed next to these women bedrooms each and every time. So they, they were basically, they started getting sick and getting these, these menopause symptoms, so to speak, when they got this smart meter installed. So they kind of had to move their bedroom or in, in a lot of states you can actually opt out now. And there's, there's a good website for that. The, the in power movement is actually working with citizens now to remove these meters because it's, it's really silly that you get this. So the utility meter, usually you have the analog meter that just. You see five quadrants that spin. This is just, this is sent to the utility meter via a wire. But now they figured, okay, we're going to use something smarter, right? Wireless. But it sends a bunch of signals even in your bedroom that's completely useless. It's supposed to send your, your electricity used to the utility via the exterior, but it blasts everywhere. So you can actually out and contact your utility company. So this is what these women did. But I think the same can happen if you use your cell phone all the time, for example, or even if you do the mistake. I've seen one friend doing that. She had her WI fi router right underneath her desk at about 1ft from. From her body at all times. And she works 40 hours a week from home. So when she stopped doing that and put the WI fi router in the other side of the, of the entire house, I think in the garage, she felt better, she felt less fatigued. At the end of the day, it's pretty much like another source of stress in your life. This is even though you do not see the signals, you cannot hear them, you cannot feel them. For most people, how you'll end up feeling is just that something is taking a toll on your health on all levels. So this is really why you gotta reduce your exposure. Exposure to as much as you can while staying sane.
You don't have to tell. You totally scares me as to what's going to happen with all of our kids being raised around this is normal, you know. And I know that you have a checklist because as I'm listening to all this, I'm kind of going, all right, now, I've done a lot in my house, but I know I can do more. And I know that you have a checklist that you are going to be giving everybody. So if you're watching it or listening right now going, ah, don't worry, there's a checklist that you're going to be able to download for free. You already got some things like, you know, the tinfoil to travel with the tinfoil, which I'm so doing. That's a great idea. And you can get this checklist@jjvirgin.com forward/emf. Can you tell them a little bit about it?
Sure. So the checklist, basically, I put everything that should be your top priorities at home. When you look at what are the sources of the MFS, the worst sources, because I mean, there are EMFs everywhere. Even, even standard electricity is an EMF. So you cannot freak out about it. But what are your top priorities like the WI fi router and your devices and what to do about it. So it's a checklist. You're going to be able to go around your home and check things off. And just like, when it comes to diet, you gotta take one thing at a time. Baby steps. Like you, I. I don't expect you to apply everything that you learn at once, but the more you can do, the better you'll feel. And J.J. yourself, you've realized that now you sleep better. It's precious. It's just sleeping 10% better can make your life so much brighter in all levels. So this is really like taking baby steps, removing these sources and creating an environment at home that's low EMF will really do a lot, especially if you spend the rest of the time like most of us guys. I spend time in cafes, I spend time in. And the office. And these environments are going to stay high EMF. So you get to spend at least 8, 10 hours at home in a very low environment, and you're going to feel better as a whole person.
This is just another thing that you need to do for detox. And what's cool about this is this is a lot easier than, say, dropping the gluten or the sugar. Right? I mean, and that's what you'll see when you see this checklist. Now, I want to throw a little curveball at you, Nick. What's the one thing you do every day that you feel makes the biggest difference in your life?
The one thing right now is reducing carbs. I've been postponing getting on the ketogenic diet and recommendations that I've been hearing for years and years and years and actually tracking how many grams of carbs am I having. And since the last two weeks, I've started having very, very low carb. Just like guys like DAV and the Bulletproof Diet advocate and a lot of people just like you advocate in reducing sugar and whatnot.
I would tell you to read the Sugar Impact diet because it's going to really teach you the quality of those carbs, too.
That's. That's right. Exactly. Well, in my case, it just made a difference in my energy in a major way. And of course, the second thing would be not using my cell phone all the time. Of course, I'm the MF guy, so.
Had to say that. All right, I want to remind everybody that you can get this checklist. And this is not as daunting as it sounds, but it makes a big difference quickly, which is super cool. And you can get that@jjvirgin.com EMF and Nick, I want to thank you so much for joining me today.
Thank you, jj.
Appreciate it. Now, after the break, I'll be answering a listener's question, so stay with me.
If you're over 35 or under stress, you might not be digesting protein well and you may decide to take an enzyme product. But if you think all enzyme products are basically the same, here's the truth. Most digestive enzymes help your body digest everything better. Sounds great, except for one thing. When you speed up carbohydrate digestion, you're actually raising your blood sugar, which is not good. JJ has included a special ingredient in her digestive enzymes that slows and even blocks some carbohydrate digestion while supporting protein digestion. Visit jjvirgin.comproducts and give JJ's digestive enzymes a try today.
Welcome back. This is the time where I answer a listener's question. And today's question comes from Tricia in Salt Lake City. Now, you know, I go searching through our Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest to find the best questions for each podcast, ones that fit in really well. And this one from Tricia is fantastic. She says, jj, I recently cut sugar out of my diet. Now I'm just, just tired all the time. You know, do I go back and eat the sugar? Do I need B vitamins? What gives? All right, so couple things to think about here, Tricia, and when I wrote the sugar impact diet, and I'm hoping that when you cut sugar that you actually use the sugar impact diet because Nick talked about here, you know, I'm cutting my carbs. Well, remember, all carbs except for fiber, which is not digestible. Everything else turns to sugar. So you can either eat sugar which.
You mainlining it then, or you can.
Eat the other carbs and they turn to sugar and you make it slowly from the foods you eat. So you really want to know because all, all carbs again, are carbs. All sugar are actually carbs. You really want to know the quality of those carbs and what kind of sugar impact they have on your body. That's why I was kind of ribbon, Nick, because it's like cut carbs lower, but really look at the quality there of what you're eating. It's very different to eat say some whole wheat pasta versus some lentil pasta versus some spaghetti squash pasta. It's very different to eat white rice versus wild rice. So that is why I really focus on the quality of the carbs. And one of the things I teach in the sugar impact diet is that you want to slowly lower your sugar impact. If you've been eating a higher carbohydrate diet with some sugar, first you go from high sugar impact foods down to medium sugar impact foods, while increasing your protein so it's at optimal levels and adding more fat. And then you lower it down from there, making sure you've got the trifecta on your plate of healthy, healthy fats, clean protein and non starchy vegetables and slow, low carbs. So you get the fiber, fat, protein trifecta that gets your blood sugar controlled. And so my sense is you might have just done this too aggressively. And you got to give your time, your body time to convert from being a sugar burner over to a fat burner. And that is what the sugar impact diet's all about. It's really about figuring out how many carbs you should have. It's really about carbohydrate intolerance. Now, another thing, of course, and that's why I wanted to put this with Nick's conversation, is you got to look at all the other things. How's your sleep? What's going on with nutrients? So do you have any kind of nutrient deficiencies? Yes, B vitamins, especially B12, can play a role here, but so can, you know, being nutrient deficient overall. But the biggest reasons I see people are fatigued is either a sudden shift in their carbohydrates, too fast for their body to to adjust to, or they are not sleeping well. And so I'm going to say what I did myself. Pull those EMFs out of that bedroom and see what it does. Because for me, it was honestly mind blowing, the change that it made. So I'm excited to hear what it does for you too. All right, now, this is the gratitude portion of the show. My favorite. And I gotta tell you, we look at our reviews on itunes all the time. The whole team does. It's kind of how we get our grades. So we super appreciate these reviews that you guys are leaving. They are awesome and I just feel super grateful for all of that. So I'm gonna read this one that says awesome information From Erin Darnell, five stars. I've been listening to JJ's podcast for a long time. I love her tips for living a healthy life. I found her after she was on Chalene Johnson's podcast. I love how they are very much in alignment with the information that they both put out there. I would highly recommend this podcast if you want to live a healthier life and you want the best tips to get there. All right, thank you. So much Aaron. I super appreciate that and I want to remind you all listening that I do strive to get the coolest, most actionable information out there and then the next step is up to you because this information is only valuable if you use it. So big, big ones to take action on today. Make sure you download that checklist@jjvirgin.com forward/emf and take something out of your bedroom or take your cell phone out of your pocket. Do something about those EMFs. Now start that digital detox. All right, make it a great week.
See you.
