15 Dec 2025 · 10 min
JJ Virgin explains why fiber matters for satiety, blood sugar, and gut health, then argues you need diverse fiber types rather than psyllium husk alone. She covers how fiber helps with weight, cholesterol, constipation, and your microbiome.

You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

Again, if fiber were a prescription drug, it would be prescribed all the time. Why? Because it can help with satiety so you're not as hungry. It can help with weight loss.

Hey, it's jj and if you've got questions, guess what? I'll get the answers. So here's what we do. When I'm doing Facebook lives and Instagram lives, hopefully you're checking me out over there. Jump on in and leave a question. We grab them, we put them into this long Google Doc that I have that says Facebook and Instagram Live questions and then I go in and record them and Friday we put them on out there as Friday Q and A. And I would love to do a shout out and answer your question. Also you can leave a review on itunes and throw the question in there as well. And of course, if it's a big topic, I'll do a solo episode on it. Now when I'm answering questions, you can always go to jjvirgin.com forward/questions and get any of the resources I talk about. Okay, so this one came from a Facebook live from Margot and she asks thoughts on Psyllium Husk. First of all, if you've been listening to me at all, you know I am a huge fan of fiber. It's like again, if fiber were a prescription drug, it would be prescribed all the time. Why? Because it can help with satiety so you're not as hungry. It can help with weight loss. It can help with balancing blood sugar. It can help with constipation and diarrhea. Woohoo. Because it's balancing, right? It can help with detoxification. It can help boost the good fluffy HDLs while reducing the bad little dense LDLs. And what else? Oh, it can feed the good microbiome in the gut. So I mean, it is just a winner. So we want to be using it every day and the average American's getting something like I think you know, I've been looking at all the stats, they're all over the place. But let's say 10 to 15 grams a day. This stinks. You want to be getting 50 grams or more a day? I think the American dietetics association says 35. Let's not settle for that. Okay, let's go for 50 grams or more a day. But here's the deal. If you are a wimpy fiber intaker, do not fix this overnight. Fix it over time. And as you up your fiber, you also want to increase your water so you keep things moving along. Okay, so psyllium husk, here's the deal. Psyllium husk is fabulous. There's loads of research on it and it's easy to find. It's a bulk forming laxative. It's actually from the husks. It's made from the husks of the plantago ovata plant seeds. It also goes by the name ispagula and it's commonly known as a laxative. However, it's one fiber. Now the cool thing with it is it's a prebiotic. And as we know, prebiotics feed the good bacteria in the gut. So they're like fertilizer for the good bacteria. So. And also by doing all of that, of course we also help with immune health. And since it's soluble, it's good for cholesterol, it can suit the gut as well. But it's just one type of fiber. Here's my recommendation. Don't just settle for one. I especially want to make sure that you've got fibers, a blend of soluble and insoluble and resistant starch and prebiotics. You want the big kahuna of all of those things. So I'm recommending that you get a blend of fiber. Most of the time you're going to see things in the drugstore. It's like a solo game, right? It's psyllium. No, no, no, don't settle for that. Let's get a bunch. Let me name off some ones that I like. So apple pectin, super good gut soothing along with flax is also gut soothing. Of course we've inulin because it's a prebiotic and again, fertilizer for the bacteria in your gut. Glucomannan is another one that's really good for balancing blood sugar. So some other ones I like acacia gum, guar gum, cranberry seed powder, carrot fiber, citrus fiber fiber gum, acacia gum. So there's a bunch of different ones out there. So that's my recommendation is don't settle for one. Get a blend. Get a blend. So you get a blend of prebiotics, antioxidants, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber and resistant starch. That is what we want to do. And then again, focus. Also, we'll put this in JJvirgin.com questions? Let's focus on getting fiber for some food and then supplementing with additional fiber. I have a product called Extra fiber that's got 12 different types of fiber. Because the whole point is it's extra fiber after you've had your legumes, your nuts and seeds, your avocado, your berries, your non starchy vegetables, your wild rice, your squashes. Getting the point. Then get some extra from extra fiber. Easy to throw into your smoothie or sauces, etc. Alrighty again, if you've got questions, I will get the answers. So go ahead and just leave them on my Facebook or Instagram pages or shoot us a little review. We love it when you do at my iTunes reignite wellness show. And you can leave the question there too. Alrighty, I will see you next time.
