What Do You Recommend for Energy-Boosting Foods and Suggest Avoiding That Are Energy-Depleting Foods?
15 Dec 2025 · 10 min
Dr. Steven Gundry explains which foods drain your energy and which boost it. He recommends prebiotic fibers like inulin from chicory and endive to increase postbiotics that signal your mitochondria to make ATP. Pistachios, red wine, and olive oil are melatonin-rich foods that support mitochondrial energy.

Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating, and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Well, maybe we'll do it backwards. First of all, processed foods, simple sugars, simple energy drinks, protein energy drinks that you see advertised on tv and saturated fats are the best ways to deplete your energy. These number one, do not contain any prebiotic fibers that feed your gut buddies exactly what they need to produce energy. And we'll get into that in a second. But they also absolutely wham the energy producing factories, your mitochondria with rush hour traffic 16 hours a day. And you actually are overfed but underpowered now in terms of energy boosting food. Exciting new research about postbiotics shows that postbiotics are how gut buddies when you give them what they like to eat, which are called prebiotics, postbiotics actually tell your mitochondria to make energy, to make ATP. And they're a communication system that's recently been discovered that's one of the most exciting discoveries of all time. That gases that our gut bacteria make diffuse through our gut wall and travel to our brain, to all of our cells, to all of our mitochondria that tell mitochondria to make more energy and also do a very good job of protecting themselves from harm. Additionally, we now know that brain fog and the feed feeling of fatigue is also driven by neuroinflammation caused by a leaky brain. And that these postbiotic compounds are actually essential for allowing neurons and the mitochondria within neurons to also boost their energy and to stop literally killing themselves. So I have a whole chapter in the energy paradox about postbiotics, how to get your bacteria to produce postbiotics. And some of the best ways to do that is prebiotic fiber in for instance, leafy greens. Inulin is one of the best prebiotic fibers. It's present in chicory vegetables like chicory, like Belgian endive, like radicchio, which some people think is an Italian red lettuce and you can even get inulin powder that you can cook with and use as a sweetener. So that's a great way. The second thing I point out is that melatonin, which many people think of as a sleep hormone, is actually the most important antioxidant and energy producing compound that you can give to mitochondria. And I have a whole list of foods that are rich in melatonin. And it may surprise you that pistachios have by far the most melatonin of any food that exists. And interestingly enough, red wine and olive oil may have their health promoting properties. Not so much from polyphenols like resveratrol, but from the melek melatonin content in these two beverages and oils. So melatonin containing foods are one of the new in superfoods in the Energy Paradox.
