What Is the Best Brand of Almond Butter to Buy?
15 Dec 2025 · 6 min
Podcast episode featuring JJ Virgin (host), who answers a listener question about the best brand of almond butter. JJ recommends buying organic almond butter with no added sugar or oils (labels ideally list only "almonds" and "sea salt"), suggests rotating nut butters (macadamia, walnut, pecan, cashew) and notes sunflower butter as an alternative for those who cannot have tree nuts; she advises avoiding peanut due to higher aflatoxin risk. The episode also contains interleaved sponsor reads for Earth Breeze (laundry detergent sheets), Wayfair (home goods), Monarch (personal finance app), and Buffalo Trace (bourbon).

Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating, and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. I remember. I remember so well dipping that spoon into that almond butter and cone. Why does this taste so darn good? Oh, they added sugar to it. Darn it. So, yes, you do have to check the labels and it's kind of challenging to give you actual labels because it differs throughout the country and also in different parts of the world. Because this podcast goes everywhere. But a couple things I would look at and then a couple places you can look like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Look there. You ideally would love to have organic. That's the best when you're getting these nuts, obviously. So you want organic nut butter with no sugar added and make sure they don't add in some crappy oils, too. I'm always amazed when that happens. But you know, the Whole Foods organic, Trader Joe's organics ones don't do that. So when I'm buying these, I am going to look for a couple different things I want to ideally have the the labels say almonds and sea salt. I love sea salt in my nut butter and I love it in my shake. And that is it. Now another thing to think about is almond butter is awesome. And there are those stores, I think Sprouts, where I live does it, maybe Whole Foods does it, where you can actually grind it fresh. Oh my gosh. So good. But I'm going to, like push you to think outside the almond box for a bit because almond butter is great, but boy, there are far more nut butters out there. One that deserves some massive recognition is macadamia nut butter. It is as delicious as it sounds. So there's another one. And then walnut butter, pecan butter, there's sunflower butter. I'm not a fan of that, I must say, but for people who cannot do nuts, that's an option. So there's a lot of different nut butters out there, so I would encourage you to give those a shot and to also look for the stores where you can grind it fresh. That's especially awesome when you can do it. The big thing you always want to make sure that you're doing when you're grabbing those nut butters is to flip them on over and make sure that they have not added sugar into it and they have not added in any other oils. I mean, I don't know why you'd need to do that because nuts are high in fat so they they bring their own oil to the table. But again, what I really love to see you do is rotate those nut butters as much as possible. Oh and I oh my gosh, I forgot cashew, which is my hubby's favorite. And I like to throw these in shakes just like it sounds like you do Nancy. That's one of the ways that we do them. But there are also a lot of other things. One great thing to do if you are having some people over for maybe drinks before dinner is celery with almond butter is a great little appetizer or a great thing to pack in your kids lunches too. So there's another one for you. Or a little bit of a green banana with almond butter. Yum. So good. So again, try switching them up. Almond, pecan, walnut, cashew. But the one that you didn't hear me say, of course was peanut and that is because peanut's not a nut, it's a gum. And it is one of the ones that is more at a risk for aflatoxin mold than the other. So I like to stick to the nuts and the better fats from there. So there you go. Read those labels. This is JJ with Ask the Health Expert.
