What Is the Best Way to Get to Sleep and Wake up Well-Rested?
15 Dec 2025 · 7 min
A JJ Virgin podcast episode in which host JJ Virgin asks sleep expert Dr. Peter Martoni (Dr. Sleepwright) how to get to sleep and wake up well rested. The episode contains multiple sponsor ad reads (Wayfair, Earth Breeze, Ray-Ban Meta, Monarch, Chrysler) and a listener question from Facebook; Dr. Martoni emphasizes a psychological technique he calls “remember yourself to sleep,” distinguishing calming memory-focused remembering from active thinking about to-do lists, as a way to fall asleep and stay asleep for restorative sleep.

You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on.

Now to wake up well rested, well rested, you have to go to bed with that intention. So sleep is a big mind game. And what I mean by that is how you go to sleep plays a critical role on how you're going to stay asleep and then how you wake up rested and when you wake up. So going to sleep is an art. And you cannot think yourself to sleep, which means we can't think about our to do list. We can't think about the things that we have to, you know, we have to do or what's on our plate the next day. You need to remember yourself to sleep. So your think brain is in the front part of your brain and you remember your brain or your memories are in the back part of your brain where your sleep brain is. So the awake brain, where your think brain is, which is in the front. And then your remember brain or where your memories are is where your sleep thoughts are, are your sleep memories. So you need to focus on a good memory. Let's say it's walking around the lake.
Or.
It'S a good memory of the time that you spent with your kids or it's something, a place that you love to go with your parents and you remember that memory over and over again and focus on remembering and don't focus on thinking. And I know it sounds a little bit counterintuitive like, well, what's the difference between remembering and thinking is very different because when you're remembering and you're feeling a good memory in the past and you think and you're remembering that memory, next thing you know you'll doze off to no man's land. And when you remember yourself to sleep, what happens is you're going to stay asleep and then you're going to wake up well rested when you're thinking about things to do. Like the next day you'll just get really, really tired. You'll have an active brain and then what will end up happening is you'll wake up multiple times a night and you won't get that good deep restorative sleep. So to be able to wake up well rested, you need to make sure that you're remembering yourself to sleep.
